Miller School Student Wins Grant for Social Media Study on COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy and Infertility


Morgan Levy, a second-year M.D./M.P.H. candidate at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been awarded a $500 grant by the Association for Healthcare Social Media and Cochrane. Levy will develop an educational, social media campaign to tackle misinformation in vaccines and infertility on social media during COVID-19 in collaboration with her mentor, Torie Comeaux Plowden, M.D., M.P.H.

Miller School Students Launch Mobile Clinic to Aid Medically Underserved in Dade County Students in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have launched Miami Street Medicine (MSM), a mobile clinic offering wound care, health screenings, medications, and case management to homeless populations in Miami-Dade County. Dan Bergholz, who is the founder of MSM and a third-year student at the Miller School, is working closely with the Dade County Street Response to build the clinic infrastructure.

M.D./M.P.H. Joint Degree Program

Students help address challenges created by the pandemic University of Miami Miller School of Medicine students have helped address challenges created by the coronavirus pandemic through a myriad of ways. Among the efforts include conducting research, engaging in public policy advocacy in Washington, D.C., printing 3D face shields, a non-profit vaccination initiative, and delivering smart devices to the elderly to enable face-to-face communication with their families.

Course Evaluations The mid-semester course evaluations are scheduled on October 4-8, 2021. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the evaluations.

Graduation and Fall Commencement Ceremony The application for Graduation is now open. The deadline to apply for Fall 2021 Graduation is October 14, 2021. Students must apply for graduation to participate in the commencement ceremony. The Fall Commencement Ceremony is scheduled to be held on Friday December 17, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Watsco Center on the Coral Gables campus. MD/MPH Program Update Medical school students have begun interviewing for the upcoming residency Match. Let’s wish our 4th year MD/MPH students luck with their interviews! Danny Gomez, a third-year M.D./M.P.H. candidate, is a semi-finalist in the American Medical Associations (AMA) Research Challenge. Danny submitted an abstract on the topic of “Chronic pain and High-Impact Chronic Pain and its role in Emergency Room Utilization." Morgan Levy, a second-year M.D./M.P.H. candidate, wrote an article on the unprecedented human experience of attending a Zoom funeral titled, "Do You Still Wear a Black Dress to a Zoom Funeral?" The article has been published in the July edition of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The Canes Student Ambassador Program is for current students who are interested in becoming leaders, not only in the Canes community, but specifically for the Department of Public Health Sciences. DPHS Canes Student Ambassadors will interact with prospective and incoming students through campus tours, recruitment events, student engagement events, and mentoring international students.
