POLITICAL SCIENCE

ANNUAL NEWSLETTER

"We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien
philosophies,
and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people."
— JOHN F. KENNEDY, FEBRUARY 26, 1962.
Chair's Farewell
Nancy Burns
Warren E. Miller Collegiate Professor Chair, Department of Political Science, 2014-2024 Research Professor, CPS, ISR
I’m honored to have chaired this amazing department over these 10 years. We have done so many great things to build the future. I want to add up some of these accomplishments. In these ten years…
We have graduated 2,928 Majors and 410 minors. We have taught and you have taken 182,692.5 undergraduate student credit hours. 226 of you have completed senior honors theses. 6,423 of you have taken intensive writing courses in political science. 2499 of you have taken undergraduate political science courses in cutting-edge social science methodologies.
You and your fellow undergraduates have received the Wallenberg Fellowship, the Truman Scholarship, the Rhodes Scholarship, the MLK Spirit Award (6 times), the Marshall Sahlins Award for the Best Senior Thesis in the Social Sciences (twice), the Sweetland Prize for Excellence in Upper-Level Writing (8 times), the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Fellowship (4 times), among many, many other awards.
91 of you have completed your dissertations and received your PhDs. For this astonishing work, you have received 20 American Political Science Association Best Dissertation Awards.

The department has promoted 20 fabulous faculty members and hired 26 amazing new faculty members.
Our faculty have received just about every teaching and mentoring award there is.
Members of our community – PhDs and faculty –have received 35 American Political Science Association Best Book Awards, including 3 awards for the very best book in the entire discipline of political science.
Wow.
I’m honored to have partnered with you in this work.
I’m thrilled to introduce our new chair, Professor Andrew Murphy. We will be lucky in his leadership.
Take care, and Go Blue!

Chair's Welcome
Andrew Murphy Chair & Professor of Political Science
It’s my great pleasure to greet you as the department’s new chair. I am keenly aware that I have big shoes to fill in following Nancy Burns, who has chaired the department for the past decade and whose dedication and record of accomplishment are nothing short of astonishing (as the data that she lays out in her message make abundantly clear).
Michigan Political Science is a community of distinguished scholars and teachers supported by a superb and dedicated staff, serving an amazing group of graduate and undergraduate students. The main role of the chair, as I see it, is to facilitate the excellent work being done every day by members of the department, and to make sure that our many constituencies – the College, the University, the world beyond our classrooms, our alumni – are aware of that work and the value that it brings to our understanding of the complex and contentious world that we live in.
Our world needs what political scientists offer, now more than ever, especially as we move into a presidential election season. Members of our community provide a valuable public service in their research, teaching, and service: they contribute thoughtful analysis and data-driven evaluation of political institutions and behavior, critically explore

Whatever your connection to the department, I hope that this newsletter will provide you with a sense of just how vibrant and productive the members of our community have been over the past year, the value that they have added to the quality of public discourse on campus and beyond. And this year was no exception.
In closing, let me thank each of you for your support of the department, and encourage you to keep in touch with us. We are immensely proud of our alumni, and cherish the role we’ve played in your successes. And for the first time as department chair (but surely not the last), let me say: Go Blue!

Barry Ryan
Associate Professor
John Barry Ryan started as an Associate Professor John

"The first time I was in Ann Arbor was in 2006 when I attended the ICSPR summer program in quantitative methods. I was part of a group of six PhD students from the University of California, Davis sharing a house near South University. Before we headed back to the West Coast, we stopped to buy t-shirts that said on them, “Michigan Political Science” to commemorate the four weeks that we were in close proximity to that historic department.
After stops on the faculty at Florida State University and Stony Brook University, I am thrilled to be on the faculty at Michigan with a joint appointment in Political Science as well as Communication and Media. Given my appointment, it is no surprise that my teaching and research focus on political communication. I taught one course on the influence of social networks on political decision making and another on campaign communication strategies. In that latter course, the students got really excited about their final projects: creating a website and social media campaign for a 20th century presidential candidate. It was great for the students to show what they’ve learned while also showcasing their personalities – something I don’t get to see on multiple choice exams.
I have a new book out this summer called Partisan Hostility and American Democracy that looks at recent political events to explain when and how partisanship shapes behavior and when other factors are more important.
A basic theme of the book and a lot of my recent research is that average Americans are not as politically divided as it would seem from watching the news. There is, however, a minority that is deeply divided and there are politicians eager to exploit those divisions.
Recently, I went to the MDen and bought a new t-shirt that said, “Michigan Political Science.” In many ways, it was the realization of a dream that seemed impossible 18 years ago."
Nathan Carrillo
Executive Assistant to the Chair
Nathan Carrillo is excited to join the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan as the new Executive Assistant to the Chair. While still early in his career, Nathan brings with him a rich history at the U-M community where he has been working and studying for over a decade.
His time on campus began with the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra. He continued his academic pursuit at U-M in Germanic Studies, during which he also started working as a docent at the Museum of Natural History. Following his graduation, Nathan remained on campus and began working as the Office Manager for the Museum of Natural History. Taking on a new role as a Sr. Administrative Assistant for University Productions in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, he provided administrative support for the major performing halls such as Hill Auditorium, Rackham Auditorium, and the Power Center.
In his free time, Nathan thoroughly enjoys the outdoors and indulging in nature. With so much natural beauty in the state of Michigan, Nathan can be found all over but usually isn’t too far from water. He loves to kayak and ride his (electric) bike, usually taking his dog Rex along for the ride. He once biked the Huron River from Ann Arbor to Lake Erie. Nathan is always looking forward to new adventures.
Nathan is excited to bring his talents and passion to the Department of Political Science, and greatly looks forward to working with all of the faculty and staff here in the department.

Tanner
Ellis Office Coordinator

Tanner Ellis started as the Office Coordinator in Fall 2023.
"I'm Tanner Ellis, and I'm honored to serve as the Office Coordinator for the esteemed Political Science department at the University of Michigan. After completing my degree in History here at U of M, I knew I wanted to contribute to the community that had shaped me. Joining the Political Science department felt like a natural fit, combining my organizational skills with an interest in the dynamics of governance and policy.
As the Office Coordinator, I supervise our Student Office Assistants, work closely with our Chief Administrator Joe Johnson, on faculty office placements and support, oversee department and building access, and liaise with the LSA Facilities team to track and coordinate maintenance and renovations. Additionally, I serve on the Building Incident Response Team, which establishes and communicates emergency procedures and response for Haven Hall.
While I grew up in and around Ann Arbor, I now call Ypsilanti home. Outside of work, you can find me enjoying Ypsi's unique character, listening to local music in one of many venues in town, reading in Frog Island Park, or relishing the fantastic local food and coffee culture.

If you find yourself on the 5th floor of Haven Hall, and are looking for directions, support, or just to chat, please drop by my desk in the main suite of the Political Science Department. I look forward to working with you!"
Sonimar Maldonado-Alvarado
Events & Communications Coordinator
Sonimar Maldonado-Alvarado started as the Events and Communications Coordinator in Fall 2023.
“I am excited to be here! And to continue developing Political Science’s communications. Nurturing artistic creativity was a vital part of my upbringing, which led me to pursue an education in the arts.
I earned an AAS in Painting and Drawing and a BFA in Painting at Pratt Institute in NYC. After culminating my studies there, I did an MFA in Studio Arts at American University in Washington, DC. While finishing this degree, I discovered a passion for serving others by offering support. Since then, I have shifted my focus from arts to administration and expanded my knowledge and experience in this field.
This decision brought me to Michigan, where I pursued an MA in Art Administration at Eastern Michigan University. During this time, I participated in extracurricular activities, including presenting my research at international conferences, serving as a grant panelist, and contributing as a Curator, Lecturer, and Volunteer. I also continued creating and exhibiting my paintings, primarily in galleries located in the Midwest.

Following my studies, I worked as a Development and Communications Associate at the Ann Arbor Art Center. While enjoyable, the constant exposure to art also hindered my ability to engage with artwork at home. Therefore, I was thrilled when the opportunity to join the LSA’s Political Science Department presented itself.
This role allows me to continue applying my skills while preserving enough creative energy to make paintings.
Currently, I am working on various projects to further the department's internal and external communications. Look forward to many new things to come!”

Seniors' Celebration
CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2024!
On May 4, 2024, we celebrated the graduation of 315 undergraduates in Rackham Auditorium. Each student had a unique journey that brought them to the stage. Some students completed internships with organizations such as law firms, court systems, and government offices at the local, state, and federal level. Some conducted or assisted with research on topics that spanned across all our subfields. Some students studied around the world at institutions including Sciences Po in Paris, France, Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan, and the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Though the journeys were different, every student has the ability to change the world thanks to the building blocks they established in this department.
Congratulations to all of these students and best wishes for their next journey!
