POLITICAL SCIENCE

ANNUAL NEWSLETTER

Chair's Message
Greetings from Ann Arbor! I’m delighted to have this opportunity to connect with our friends and alumni, and I hope that this newsletter gives you a sense of all the exciting things that are happening here in Haven Hall. It has been an eventful year, to say the least, and members of our department have played a vital role in analyzing and explaining current developments to audiences on campus and beyond.
I’m happy to share that, at its May meeting, the U-M Board of Regents approved Ragnhild Nordås’s promotion to Associate Professor of Political Science, with tenure! This official action merely confirms what we all already knew: that Ragnhild is a stellar and accomplished colleague, producing pathbreaking scholarship on conflict-related sexual violence and teaching our students how to understand the world around them. Congratulations, Ragnhild!
I frequently find myself repeating the words “Political science is more important now than ever.” It may be a truism, but nonetheless it’s true: In these uncertain and polarized times, our faculty continue to produce cutting-edge and timely scholarship and to teach compelling courses that prepare students for lives of informed, engaged citizenship. In the past year alone, our student enrollments topped 4500 (in 107 different courses). The number of students declaring a political science major has steadily increased since 2022, and we currently have more than 600 majors and minors. At the graduate level, Michigan Political Science continues to place its Ph.D.s in positions at leading
colleges and universities as well as in prestigious postdoctoral fellowships, liberal arts colleges, think tanks, and industry.
Even as we face generational transformation in our faculty ranks and a challenging research and teaching landscape, we remain a top 5 political science program. This fall, we welcome 5 new faculty members! Please join me in welcoming Roberto Carlos, Alex Gazmararian, Licheng Liu, and Tyler Simko as Assistant Professors in the department. In addition, Elena Barham will be joining us as an LSA Collegiate Fellow.
I hope that you’ll stay in touch with us and let us know of your accomplishments, so that we can celebrate them in future newsletters! And if you are attending this year’s APSA Annual Meeting in Vancouver, please join us at the U-M reception, which will take place on Thursday, September 11 from 7:30-9:00 pm, in Crystal Pavilion C of the Pan Pacific Vancouver hotel.
Go Blue!
With all best wishes,

Andrew Murphy Department Chair

When we flew to Ann Arbor for my recruitment visit, my kids insisted on bringing their full hockey gear. I grumbled about the extra bags, and they cheerfully reassured me that theirs wouldn’t be the only hockey bags at baggage claim. They were absolutely right.
They turned the visit into a full scouting mission--skating at every rink in town, checking out neighborhoods, and getting a feel for the community. The department gave us tickets to a U-M hockey game, and
period, my kids were chanting along with the crowd like they’d been born Wolverines. That was the moment we knew we were home.
Before Michigan, I taught at UBC in Vancouver (where those very Canadian kids were born) and at UCLA, where I served as Vice Chair for Graduate Studies. My research explores how social networks and identity shape political behavior, especially in places where institutions are fragile or unequal. I use field experiments, surveys, and large-scale data to study misinformation , polarization, and inclusive development.

Since arriving, I’ve been teaching a class on development and political economy, and it's been a pleasure to work with students who bring both rigor and heart to the classroom. Ann Arbor has already delivered: the kids found their hockey and soccer teams, Scout (our oversized but surprisingly stealthy Dalmatian) found his favorite trails--and our family found the kind of place we were all searching for when we first packed up the hockey bags and came to town.

Navida Chun-han Wang joined the Department of Political Science as a Lecturer in August 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to her current position, she taught at the University of South Carolina for two years. Her research focuses on examining the channels through which international organizations influence state behavior.
Navida has lived in Belgium, Switzerland, and Taiwan.
Prior to academia, she worked as a Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan). She speaks English, French, and Mandarin. Outside of work, she enjoys playing the piano, especially pieces by Chopin, and hopes to visit all US national parks someday.
Navida is excited to be part of the Department of Political Science.

2025 Giving Blueday go blue!
This year's Giving Blueday, you continued to show your Michigan spirit by increasing your support for our Academic Experience Fund. This program helps our undergraduate students pursue academic experiences beyond the traditional classroom.
Your donations go to students like Wencong Yu, "Your generosity has allowed me to conduct intensive academic research without being worried about financial issues[...] more importantly, your donation has made it possible for a first-generation and international student like myself to see the bigger world;" and Alexandra Odunuga, "Studying abroad has been an incredible experience [...] Your support allows Michigan students to take part in programs like this!"
Most of our donations came from Alumni, so from everyone in the U-M Political Science Department, we want to say THANK YOU! And...

Seniors' Celebration
CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2025!
On May 3, 2025, we celebrated the graduation of 279 undergraduates in Rackham Auditorium. Each student had a unique journey that brought them to the stage. Some students completed internships with organizations such as law firms, cour t systems, and government offices at the local, state, and federal level. Some conducted or assisted with research on topics that spanned across all our subfields. Some students studied around the world at institutions including Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany, the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and through the School for Field Studies in Paro, Bhutan. Though the journeys were different, every student has the ability to change the world thanks to the building blocks they established in this department.
Congratulations to all of these students and best wishes for their next journey!
