The Mosaic is a medical humanities journal written by students, faculty, and staff at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Just as a mosaic is formed from a unique composition of glass, stone, or tile, so is our diverse community of patients, students, staff, and professionals at UMMC. Many components are required to create one unified form, and while they are all different in appearance or function, they serve a single greater purpose. This journal is comprised of written and illustrated art from students, residents, faculty, staff, and patients.

John Caleb Grenn Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, PGY-3 While I wish I had something fancy to say about my inspiration for writing, honestly, it mostly comes from sitting on the porch or walking through woods. Every season has different sights and smells and critters, and there’s enough poetry in that for me.

Porchsteps

Worries and Walls

Have you sat on cracked summer porchsteps And seen the broadest sky beyond Darkening branches, the kind that sag Heavy in heat from the day?

What a show-off.

Bring neck splaying out— A pink penny, a cent among azalea leaves Blending with emerald dollar-bill skin.

Have you seen the candyfloss salmon skies Peeking through thicket, not yet violet but No longer pearly peach tanning brown Your ancient surrounding air?

Before I was this old and job-ridden I would have seen you as a Carpe Diem Opportunity, A golden moment only now has to offer— Perhaps the last lizard I’d ever see We would struggle over your tail.

Sometimes you’d leave it, sometimes I’d get to the rest of you fast enough.

Reluctantly supine, I’d rub your soft white belly As your eyes close, hoping you again would Show me your money.

Have you sat right there and faded with the world, Let night ease in like morphine on the day amidst the Toad-croaking cricket-chirp of a late August southern day After the mid morning flood has receded and left the earth Dry and fresh and green?

Have you sipped tea or wine as the Depths of the deep dark sky let loose a Thousand faraway fireflies, Blistering and bright on a thickwarm night, then, And lived?

Sara Grace (Gracie) Hubacek School of Medicine, Class of 2022 Everyone experiences “Imposter Syndrome” at some point in their lives, regardless of training and experience. We reach landmarks and challenges that make us say, “What on earth am I doing here? I can’t do this.” For me, that moment was Gross Anatomy, and “white iron” is a poem I wrote to express the difficulties I had with the weight of the confidence and belief from my family and friends. white iron The cadaver lab is hot, but there’s a cold sweat down my back.

My dad’s old lab coat (saving pennies where I can) nearly drags the floor, slippery with adipose and slick with formaldehyde.

I roll up the sleeves, but I still need pins to make it fit right.

I, a doctor-in-training with scalpel in hand, am suddenly a toddler wobbling in my mother’s heels, slathered in lipstick, trying to shove a fork in an outlet.

My parents save me, but they tell me they won’t always.

The lesson is lost on me, as I have found myself with a dead body in a tank, protected only by a coat, iron-heavy with expectation.

I get more practice, but kissing comes easier than dissection.

I call the traps - trapezius, the lats latissimus dorsi, and it’s clumsy and jumbled out of my mouth, stumbling in my new language.

My family says I’m doing well, but they didn’t see the first Act. The coat and blade are a costume, makeup and moustache, and I am on stage, blinded by lime lights, rehearsing my lines, “Where is the pain? Tell me more.”

I don’t belong here, but I don’t belong anywhere else, either.

I’m a child, chubby and curious, a schoolkid learning how to love, a performer reciting dialogue, and a fool dressed up in white.

My first cut is too soft, but my second pierces deep into muscle.

I’m a teenager after homecoming, and my date kisses me so lightly, I don’t know if it’s real or the product of sleep deprivation.

Mary E. McNair, PhD, RN Assistant Professor, UMMC School of Nursing I worked in gynecology-oncology for several years before leaving bedside nursing to teach. The inspiration for this poem was two patients I cared for over the course of 5 years. Both of these women had similar diagnoses and disease trajectories. It was almost like the second patient was a carbon copy of the first. After I left her room the first time I met her, the memories of my other patient (who slept backwards in the bed) came rushing back. I was so overwhelmed by the realization that this young woman would ultimately face the same disease path as my other patient. Often, as health care providers, we forget that even though the knowledge we have about cancer and the stage of a disease helps us in our care and planning, it also means that on some level we know what will ultimately happen. Maybe not today, but eventually, advanced cancer will result in the loss of life.

Hello, I’m your RN, Mary Hello, how are you? My name is Mary, I’m your RN today.

Don’t I know you? Have you been my patient before?

No? Well, you look so familiar.

I leave your room and the memories come. Stage 4-B, Cervical Cancer, newly diagnosed.

Hydronephrosis, side wall extensions for sure. Bilateral nephrostomy tubes, 42 yrs old No husband, just an ex; and one child, Jamie, 6 years old.

She’s gone now; but you, you could be her twin; with your big blue eyes in a pale face; but wait.

Her eyes were brown. But her face, yes, was pale and she wore huge black glasses.

Laughter to beat the band. And at first, questioning all we do. Involved in everything.

Later, quiet acceptance. But still questioning. When can I go home?

Then almost weekly here in the hospital. Home after treatment, and back again When treatment was too strong for her frail body. Her Spirit remained. The laughter was there.

She would ask about my family and my child. She even knew my mom’s name and my cat’s name.

I remember her vividly because she slept backwards! Feet at the head; head at the foot.

Of course, it was hard to elevate her head!

More laughter still even with the port that quit working. With all the sticks and blood draws and IV’s.

Even with the nausea, the NG tube, the suction. The TPN, the lipids, and the hydration.

The antibiotics, the anti-fungals, and through the pain. Fentanyl patches can work wonders.

More laughter! Her sister, her mom by her side. Pictures of Jamie.

But missing Jamie’s birthday. Now, some tears come.

Soon she’s weaker; all too soon she’s too quiet. And soon, too soon, she’s too accepting.

No more questions. She went home. She went home for Thanksgiving.

She didn’t get to see Christmas.

I miss her. She slept backwards in the bed.

But you, with big blue eyes, in an all too pale face.

Stage 4-B, Cervical cancer. You have the NG Tube, the suction.

The TPN, the lipids, the antibiotics. There’s the bilateral nephrostomy tubes.

There’s the pain. There’s your sister. There’s your mom.

How long will I know you?

What habit of yours will I remember you by?

Oh, I can’t go back. I can’t fix it all. I must go on. To the next room.

Elizabeth Eustice Wicks School of Medicine, Class of 2021 Growing up, I always had a fascination with observing nature-watching the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico, hiking in the mountains of North Carolina, and admiring wildlife in the forests of southern Mississippi. Nature provides a unique link between art and science-a link that I attempt to display in my creative expression. The colors and sounds of nature are varied and exotic, allowing an ever-expansive palette of inspiration to draw upon. Furthermore, traveling has significantly impacted my work and has given me the chance to reflect upon my place in the world.

Heaven’s Mountains

The pristine blankets of altocumulus

The sea laps against the shore

Gently sloping into troughs and burgeoning up into peaks

Moving methodically in and out as the ticking of a pendulum.

Temptingly tangible, invoking you to take a chance and try to feel them

Low on the horizon, the sun is ablaze

Yet, in this sphere they are only air and water-

Carrying the days’ glares and memories away as it sinks like the helm of a ship, silently, but

Unable to carry the weight of the world.

steadily, submerging itself in the water until it vanishes from sight.

The weight of sins on this earth cannot be carried by air and water.

The moon rekindles some of its solar soul mate’s luminescence,

But beyond this world, they serve a different purpose.

But the light of the day has disappeared from the heavens.

In the other realm, the troubles and heaviness will disappear Clouds will be mountains, capable of supporting our souls.

Terri Yeager, RNC-MSN UMMC-Neonatal Intensive Care Unit I was inspired to write this poem after taking care of an extremely premature infant in the NICU. His parents were so worried about their baby and we were doing all we could to help him survive. This poem came to me after I left my 12 hour shift of caring for him. It speaks of the nurses’ day-to-day struggle to help these tiny babies and the babies’ day-to-day struggle to survive.

One Shift in Time As I “badge in” at the nursery doors I wonder what will be my “baby chores” Will I be lucky and get a break Or all my energy will my workload take?

Keep up the good work And don’t falter at the sight Because you know in your heart That you are responsible for this infant’s start.

I think about the assignment on my last tour And wonder if the resident thought of a cure For the tiny little life that hung in the balance Or have all the monitors now been silenced?

A start in life that many would not get If you had not had your heart and mind set And not considered your vocation a curse The day that you decided to become a nursery nurse.

Lord, give me the strength to make it through And do all the things that I’m supposed to do Help me to provide the best of care And for one more shift a smile to wear.

My feet and legs may be aching My heart may be breaking But I’ll use my knowledge and skill To provide compassion I can’t help but feel.

For the tiny little lives that are placed in my hands And for the parents who don’t always understand The high-tech environment of the NICU And the dedication of nurses like me and you.

Pradeep Alur, MD Associate Professor, Division of Neonatology The practice of medicine is stressful at times. Hence, it needs some humor to relieve that. We frequently find that the younger generation tends to rely on technology more than on clinical science. Therefore, it is a gentle reminder in a humorous way.

The Humor in Medicine I think most of us know how much we admired the medical technology we had during medical school and housemanship (compulsory rotating internship after medical school) in the late ‘70s. We did not trust our professors, but we trusted the technology! Ramana, my friend, came to visit me in the cardiology ICU one evening when we were house surgeons. I was showing him a patient who had an amoebic liver abscess that burst into his pericardium. He had a pericardiocentesis and was placed on a cardio-respiratory monitor. I was told to watch this person closely as he may have a sudden cardiac arrest. However, they never told me what to do in such an event. Hence, I was well prepared!! :-( I was showing Ramana around the unit and told him about this particular patient, and that he may have a cardiac arrest. As I was finishing this sentence, the EKG on the monitor went flat. I panicked! I called for help from a cardiac nurse who was supposedly watching all these people through a cubbyhole in another room. “She was one uncompassionate, uncaring nurse;” I thought, as she did not budge an inch. I rushed and started the cardiac massage. I told Ramana to get the cardiologist immediately. I was cursing the nurse in my mind, who was sitting with her chin on the table unconcerned about the life and death situation.

Nevertheless, the patient’s life was essential to me. I yelled at her, “Nurse get me epinephrine now.” I saw some movement, and she slowly got up as I was continuing the cardiac massage and moved at a snail’s pace to reach the bed. She did not bring the epinephrine!

“Heartless and inconsiderate,” I thought. Instead, she tapped on the patient’s shoulder and asked him to sit and lean back in the cardiac bed. The dead patient (for all practical purposes) obliged her promptly. I was ecstatic that my first CPR was successful!

She then adjusted the fallen cardiac leads, and lone behold, the EKG tracing was back to normal. I was shocked and felt so sheepish and was about to faint from my foolish actions. The weird thing was that the patient never objected to what I was doing. Meantime, Dr. Sai Gopal, the cardiologist, arrived and inquired about the situation and asked me if I checked the patient’s pulse. I replied negatively. He then advised me to never depend on technology but rely on the clinical exam first. Sensing that I was half-dead from shame already, he flattered me that I was better than the previous house surgeon was. Apparently, the previous one wanted to defibrillate a patient based on a flat EKG rhythm on the monitor. When the patient was vehemently protesting, “No, no, no, don’t give that doc,” the house surgeon tried to convince the patient, “Please listen, you don’t understand, your heart has stopped, and it needs an electric shock!!”

Phuong Le and Sallie Lin School of Medicine, Class of 2021 We were inspired by our love for our puppies and our appreciation for the opportunity to learn and grow by taking care of our patients as third year medical students at UMMC. Before meeting my very first patient as a third-year medical student, I was excited and nervous. I had reviewed my patient’s medical chart thoroughly the night before and reviewed it again several times the next morning. I memorized her long list of medical diagnoses, medications and lab values. I anxiously knocked on the door to meet her for the first time before her big surgery that day. I had felt that I know everything about her, Ms. G, a 65-year-old woman with late stage cancer. However, as soon as I entered the room, I quickly realized that there is so much more to learn about my patient, beyond the medical record and test results. I was greeted warmly by Ms. G with her kind smile, and instantly, we had a laughful conversation about life, home, and puppies.

Ms. G shared with me about her husband, who is waiting for her in the visitor area, and that they have been married for over 30 years. She then told me about her 3 puppies, who are waiting for her at home. She joyfully told me about each of her puppies’ names and their adorable personalities. As she shared these stories with me, I saw a glimpse of gentleness in her eyes. Ms. G had been fighting cancer for over two years; but her ailment did not change who she is, a compassionate and loving person. Ms. G told me about her work as a life-long animal rights advocate. She shared stories about adopting puppies that were traumatized by their previous owners. Moved by her dedication, I shared with her about the puppy I recently adopted, Oreo, and how I am struggling to train him due to my rotation schedule. As soon as Ms. G heard my story, she told me: “Let me read you a poem I found not too long ago, which is written from a pet’s voice. It went like this: ‘What did I do?

Was it when I peed on the floor?

I’m sorry I just didn’t know yet…

Or when I chewed your favorite shoes?’”

As if Ms. G had read my thoughts and worries, she encouraged me to continue loving Oreo and communicate with him She explained to me that the language of love is universal and reassured me to remain patient in training Oreo. As I listened to her, my worries became air, and I felt embraced by her caring wisdom. I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet Ms. G and the privilege to take care of her while she was in the hospital. From Ms. G, I learned not only about her medical conditions, but also wonderful life lessons, which I will take with me as I continue my journey in medicine.

As a medical student, I have the unique opportunity to learn about each of my patients as a person and develop a close relationship with them - an invaluable experience in my personal development and my medical endeavors.

Kristen V. Adams, MD Assistant Professor of Pathology Abstract art has always been a passion of mine. I love color and texture, the way that light can highlight and transform ordinary objects and shapes. Abstract art, to me, has a way of sparking the imagination of the person viewing the piece and so it becomes very personal to the individual. I believe that art should be for the enjoyment of others. I always take the creative process very loosely and let the colors decide where they go and build in with lighter and darker colors until there is structure to the piece, similar to a landscape.

Owen Beverly Evans, Jr., MD Professor Emeritus, Pediatrics, retired The attached image is of Lake Santo in Parma, Italy, where Giuseppe Verdi frequently vacationed and was said to be where he composed some of his operas. My wife, Lynn, and I were on a tour in Italy in 2005 when I took a photo of this boat on the lake.

When we returned I used the photo to paint this oil on paper painting. The scene was idyllic and the painting has been in our home ever since.

Jordan Cothern Gargiulo School of Medicine, Class of 2020 This is a charcoal sketch of my sister, Reagan, with a slice of her MRI overlaid in oil paints. I’ve been revisiting neuroanatomy lately and drawing it all out on a whiteboard helps me better understand spatial relationships. I try to draw or paint something for enjoyment at least once a month, and this time my studies inspired my art!

Bobby May School of Medicine, Class of 2021 The spine is one of the parts of the body that is universally known, though seldom appreciated due to its intrinsic location within the body. It plays an irreplaceable role, providing support, offering protection, and allowing flexibility. If asked, most people would have a general idea of what the spine looks like, regardless of ties to the medical field. However, not many would consider the spine as something that contributes to the overall beauty of the body. Sparkling teeth, powerful muscles, compassionate eyes, alluring curves, confident stature, silky skin - these are all physical characteristics that some might say can make a person more beautiful. However, the goal of this piece was to highlight a part of the body that, while not something that influences a person’s physical attractiveness, is nonetheless just as beautiful.

O’Mara, MD, MBA, FACS Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs Professor of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery The piece (Med Center in Autumn) was inspired by a beautiful crisp fall afternoon last year in a setting that highlighted the beauty of a red maple tree at the back of the Learning Center and the Medical Education Building, which happens to be on my path to and from work every day.

Adrian Sims, MD Internal Medicine, PGY-2 I am constantly inspired by those around me; everything from my faith, my family, my colleagues, and especially my patients. To paraphrase Tolkien’s Gandalf, “I have found that it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folks that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love”

Jessie Marye Smith School of Medicine, Class of 2022 This piece was inspired by different tissues of the human body and the level of detail that gives the tissues their unique functions and properties. From left to right is bone, muscle, and nervous tissue. I found these structures within us quite interesting and beautiful with the patterns and intricacies they contain, seen upon close inspection. This piece is painted in gouache, an opaque watercolor medium, and requires multiple coats and careful application to achieve an even coat and the desired shades in your piece. I found that as I worked with this medium, it allowed time to sit and think about what I was depicting on this level of detail and in the grand scheme of things--coming to thoughts of the importance of each intricate detail as a part of the whole.

Savanna Lee Smith School of Physical Therapy, Class of 2021 On June 20, 2019, I lost my grandmother, the beloved matriarch of my maternal family and my last living grandparent. In 1986, she lost the love of her life, my grandfather, and never remarried. Although I did not have the chance to meet him, I knew him through the love and memories she and my family shared. Her passing was heartbreaking, but I know she has been reunited with my grandfather. This drawing is how I like to picture my two angels reuniting on June 20, 2019.

Kathleen Shannon Strong Pharmacy Tech III C I Pharmacy I am a pharmacy technician at the Cancer Institute and have been at UMMC for 15 years. I have survived two heart attacks; the first June 9th, 2015 and the second February 20, 2017. I have a tattoo on my left arm to commemorate and remind me of surviving my first heart attack. I did this painting of a beautiful, colorful heart after my second heart attack, and now have it as a tattoo on my left arm to remind me of surviving again. Painting is a stress reliever for me and helps me calm down when I need to relax, it’s like my therapy.

Katherine Adele Thiel School of Medicine, Class of 2021 While medicine is primarily about taking a large amount of information and condensing it, art seems to me to be about taking what initially appears straightforward and expanding it. With my art, I try to accomplish that by taking the time to look carefully then exaggerating what I find surprising (such as movement in buildings that have been standing still for years). For me, it’s all about letting go of expectations and allowing yourself to see what is in front of you instead of what you think is in front of you. It’s a skill that takes a lot of practice, but I believe it’s an exercise helpful for all areas of life.

The natural beauty of eastern Maine continues to touch me with its invitations to serenity. When I showed this photo to my 95-year-old mother, she recalled her pet name for this island: ‘cupcake’.

Dax Garner Bushway School of Medicine, Class of 2023 This picture was taken on Kodak TX 400 black and white film in St. Louis, Missouri on July 4, 2019. I was inspired to take this shot by the contrast between the arches and the trees behind the arches. The arches evoke a romantic, European past to the park and city. It’s modern, yet timeless. I knew that the contrast between the arches, trees, and the light shining through the arches would be represented gorgeously on the black and white film.

Frank Han, MD Adult Congenital Cardiology Fellow Inspiration for the Eclipse - this photo was a composite shot with a DSLR and a telescope. For me, it emphasized the wonder one feels when being able to witness the actual machinations of the solar system, and experience a small piece of the actual cosmic perspective. The only thing better than recording a picture of the event is going there, and I had never had quite as many cups of coffee as I did that night. I drove from Florida to the Carolinas overnight, and had planned to take a picture on the beach. Unfortunately, the area was overcast, so I scrambled to the west side to find a small city with a view. I finally found a small public library to set up my camera equipment, and the sky turned completely black just like in the movies, for a few minutes. It was nighttime, in the middle of the day. I highly recommend this experience for anyone who hasn’t tried it.

Mark Reed, MD, FAAP, FACS Chief, Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology My primary motivation in creating art is rooted in the creative process itself--from capturing an image to creating a scene from the imagination. I just enjoy trying to be creative and to learn something new in every piece I make. The process itself is important to me. If I like the final product and I learned something in the process, I am well pleased. If someone else likes it--it’s a humbling honor.

Susan Currie Roberts Executive Assistant, Cancer Center and Research Institute I work on the 7th floor of the Guyton building and it was fairly early in the day when I walked out of my office and noticed this little yellow bird outside.

He had obviously flown into the glass and gotten stunned. He was so beautiful, I had to get my phone and take pictures. Although the glass is thick you could still see the detail in his feathers and everything about him. The new Children’s construction was just getting underway in the background. My boss, Dr. John Ruckdeschel, was out that day, unfortunately. He is an avid Ornithologist and member of the Audubon society. When he returned he identified our visitor as a young yellow breasted chat. Thankfully our little bird recovered and flew off not long after I took the photos.

Susan Currie Roberts Executive Assistant, Cancer Center and Research Institute I work in the new Guyton building. For those that have not been in this building - you don’t know what you have missed. The architecture is stunning and there is a wonderful tribute to Dr. Guyton on the first floor. When I first came here I was struck by the atrium and the wonderful lines of the building. The view of UMC’s campus from the 7th floor is amazing. It’s a beautiful place to work every day.

Richard Wardrop, MD, PhD, FAAP, FACP Professor of Medicine Vice Chair of Education and Faculty Development The “Diversity of Hot” is meant to reflect visually the principle of Diversity and Inclusion - as any great hot sauce will include all kinds of pepper types to get the right blend. I have been growing peppers and making hot sauce these past years, and I find the process very rewarding and delicious!

Benjamin Stronach, MD Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Hip Stem in Bronze Base: This work was inspired by the medieval legend of the sword buried in the stone. This is a femoral component from a total hip replacement that has been embedded as an inclusion into a base of bronze that was fashioned to have the appearance of stone.

Benjamin Stronach, MD Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Sacred: This work utilizes a sacrum as the basic shape. The sacrum rolls and rotates and melts away as the design progresses around the circular structure. This piece was inspired by the beauty of the natural lines found within our bodies. The sacrum has a complex geometry that provides so many different contours based on the viewer’s perspective. This work was made to represent the fleeting nature of the body as it spins and fades away.

Vig, PhD Chief, Neuroscience Research Division Professor, Department of Neurology I always wondered what those two Us in our UMMC logo stood for, and how would they look if they were in 3D? So I experimented making the U logo using my very limited pottery experience. After two or three unsuccessful attempts I was able to dry my clay pieces without cracking them. It took some time to smooth out the surfaces, followed by firing in a kiln and glazing. I gave this piece to Dr. LouAnn Woodward, and she really liked it. It has been placed in the reception area of Dr. Woodward’s office and is viewed by all the visitors to the area.
