Freshmen numbers push fall enrollment to record high Recruiting efforts result in largest frosh class in the history of UMHB Not only did UMHB experience the largest enrollment in history this fall, but the incoming freshman class was also at a record high. After the eighth class day, the official enrollment for fall 2009 stood at 2,768 compared to 2,701 in fall 2008. The freshman class count was 598, which was the largest number of incoming freshman since the university started Crusader football in 1998 with a freshman class of 512 students. The increase in enrollment is due in large part to specific measures the university has taken to assist students early in the enrollment process. One such measure was “Cru Camp,” a one-day opportunity in April for

prospective students who had been accepted to start in the fall to come on campus and meet faculty and pre-register for classes. In June, new students could attend Crusader Connection, an orientation program in which the students have the opportunity to meet with an academic advisor, register for classes, and explore opportunities that will assist them in succeeding in college months before they arrive for fall classes. “We’ve really worked closely with the incoming students this year, and we began doing it as early as possible,” said Dr. Tammi Cooper, assistant dean for learning and student success. Crusader Connection and Cru Camps have been so successful that

more of them have been added to the schedule for next spring and summer. According to Ron Brown, associate vice president for enrollment management, another reason for the increase in the 2009 enrollment has been a greater number of students seeking graduate degrees. “In recent years we have added new master’s degree programs such as the MSN, and we are also seeing increased numbers of students seeking a degree at the doctoral level,” said Brown. Of the 2,768 students, 157 enrolled in master’s degree programs, and 54 enrolled in the doctor of education degree program. —Carol Woodward UMHB LIFE | 3

UMHB honored by U.S. News again as one of best in the West The University of Mary HardinBaylor once again earned a top-tier ranking among universities in the Master’s West category in the 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges by U.S.News & World Report, one of the nation’s leading sources of service journalism and news. The rankings were published in the magazine’s September issue and are available online at www.usnews.com/colleges today. UMHB moved up in their overall ranking to 32 compared to 45 last year. The university has remained in the tierone ranking since 2005. “U.S. News & World Report’s rankings measure many factors, such as retention rates, student-to-faculty ratios, and percentage of full timefaculty with terminal degrees, which are important to us and which we monitor closely,” said Dr. Randy O’Rear, president of the university. “While this report is only one way in which students and parents may evaluate our success in serving our students and in achieving our goals, we nonetheless are pleased to see that UMHB continues to garner this national recognition,” said O’Rear.

Seniors Tommy Wilson and Audrey Chumchal were honored during Convocation ceremonies this fall for their commitment to community service.

Heavin Servant Leadership Awards recognize outstanding volunteers At the 164th observance of fall convocation ceremonies on August 28, the Gary and Diane Heavin Servant Leadership Award was presented to two students in recognition of their volunteerism and community service. Audrey Chumchal and Tommy Wilson received the Gary and Diane Heavin Servant Leadership Award, which recognizes UMHB students who have committed an extraordinary amount of time and energy to ministry and community service during their years of study at UMHB. A native of Fulshear, Texas, Audrey Chumchal was recognized for her work with the Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor pageant, the Easter Pageant, University Ambassadors, and as a resident

assistant in Burt Hall. She served in a leadership role for Missions Emphasis Week and was a summer missionary in Central Asia for FOCUS International. She is a senior Christian Studies major and has been an active member of the university Honors Program throughout her college career. Tommy Wilson is a senior international business major from Charlotte, Texas. As a sophomore he interrupted his college career for a year to serve as a youth minister in Hong Kong, and in 2008 he led a group of 23 students to Vidor, Texas, to clean mud out of homes in the wake of Hurricane Ike. During his years at UMHB, he has also made two trips to Kenya as a missions volunteer and has served as

an intern at First Baptist Church of Belton. Wilson is Student Body President this year and has taken leadership roles in FOCUS, Reaching Out, and the Revival Committee. The awards included a $1,000 cash award for each student, a portion of which they donated to an organization of their choice. Gary and Diane Heavin of Waco established a permanent endowment to fund the award, to remind UMHB students the importance of philanthropy, ministry and community service.

Professor makes directing debut at Carnegie Hall George Hogan, assistant professor of music in voice, director of opera/musical theatre activities, and resident vocal artist at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, made his Carnegie Hall debut this fall in New York City. Hogan served as a director for “Opera Shorts,” a showcase of ten newly commissioned operas which ranged in length from 3 to 12 minutes each. Hogan directed four of the ten operas. Since coming to UMHB nine years ago, Hogan has produced 13 productions. He has sent over a dozen undergraduates to apprentice programs in the United States and Italy. Many of his students have earned full scholarships to pursue graduate studies. Three of his former students are already enjoying professional careers, and one is currently being sponsored by Metropolitan great, Placido Domingo.

Yellow bikes offer cooperative solution for campus travel This fall when students need to make a quick trip across the campus, they are likely to take a cab—a Cru Cab, that is. The UMHB Student Government Association launched a bicycle sharing program for students this semester. The bright yellow bikes, dubbed “Cru Cabs,” are to be used by any student who needs a ride within the confines of the campus. Students park the bikes when they reach their destinations, knowing

that the bike will probably be picked up and used by another student soon thereafter. The bike sharing program is designed to provide an environmentally friendly solution to traffic f low on campus, said student organizations director Kristy Brischke. SGA representatives also hope that the bike sharing will contribute to a greater sense of community on campus as students take part in an alternative form of ride sharing.

UMHB beats Hardin Simmons twice: Crusader pride ran high on October 3 when the results of a canned food drive were announced at the UMHB vs Hardin Simmons football game in Abilene. UMHB students challenged their counterparts at HSU to see who could collect the most canned goods for food banks in their respective cities; the UMHB students trounced their rivals by collecting 2,000 pounds of food to Hardin Simmons’ 880 pounds. Here HSU president Dr. Lanny Hall joins with President Randy O’Rear and student leaders from both schools at halftime to announce the results. The UMHB group was still smiling at the end of the game when the Crusader football team went on to beat the Cowboys 23 to 7. UMHB LIFE | 5

Alumni renew friendships and see what’s new at Homecoming 2009 “Up with the Purple” was the theme for Homecoming 2009, and there was no shortage of the royal hue as alumni gathered on campus October 23 and 24. Alumni of all ages returned to Belton for a weekend filled with nostalgia and school spirit as old friends were reunited and new friends were made. Classes with graduation years ending in 4 or 9 met Friday evening for a reunion dinner; special guests for the evening were members of the Class of 1959, who received “Golden Diplomas” to mark the 50-year anniversary of their graduation. Alumni and students braved the chilly weather to attend a lively pep rally, complete with fireworks, and a dessert party around a

glittering pond in Millenium Park. On Saturday morning, 197 runners turned out for the Cru 5K race and Kid Run around the campus. Then students and alumni alike headed for the stadium for a tailgate party and a much-anticipated football faceoff between the Cru and the Southern Oregon University Raiders. Halftime activities included the crowning of seniors Maggie Curry and Quincy Daniels as Homecoming Queen and King. Buoyed by a victory of 21 to 0 over Southern Oregon, happy fans finished up the evening at “Crusaders Got Talent,” a Saturday evening variety show featuring current students and alumni.

Cru athletic teams shine in fall and postseason competitions Fall of 2009 has been another banner semester for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor athletic department, with another series of firsts for the department. The Cru also continues to receive national recognition on and off the field of play. The UMHB men’s soccer team enjoyed the best season in the history of the Cru soccer program. The Cru was ranked as high as #16 in the country during the regular season to achieve the highest national ranking in school history. The UMHB men won the American Southwest Conference regular season championship for the first time in school history; they also claimed their first NCAA Division III National Championship berth and hosted a first round game. UMHB fell to ASC rival Hardin-Simmons University 2-0 in front of a school-record crowd of 629 to cap the most successful season in the history of the program. The Cru women’s soccer team also posted the best season in the program’s history. The UMHB women set new school records with 11 regular season

victories and 10 conference wins. The Cru women clinched a third straight berth in the ASC Championship Tournament and entered that tournament as the #4 seed to set another school record for highest postseason seeding. The UMHB women opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over East Texas Baptist to post their first ASC Tournament victory. The Cru women then fell to eventual ASC champion Hardin-Simmons in the semifinals of the tournament to cap the most successful season in the history of that program. The Cru football team saw one streak come to an end, but UMHB was still in a good position to keep another streak alive in the 2009 season. The Cru had its ASC winning streak snapped at 33 in a 17-14 loss at Mississippi College. UMHB’s 33-game streak is the second longest in ASC history and fell just one win short of tying Hardin-Simmons’ league record of 34 consecutive ASC victories. Despite the loss, UMHB tied with Mississippi College for the ASC title and moved on to postseason playoffs with a first round match against Central College in Pella, Iowa. At press time the team was gearing up for its sixth straight NCAA Division III National Championships appearance—its eighth in the last nine years—and was excited to be meeting a new set of opponents in the Western postseason brackets. The Cru volleyball team went into the final weekend of the season with a shot at a postseason berth of its own. However, the UMHB volleyball team

Soccer standout Daniel Green (20)

fell to U.T.-Tyler in the final match of the season and missed an ASC Championship Tournament berth by one game. The Cru has advanced to the ASC Tournament twice in the last four years and the future looks bright without a senior on this year’s roster. Off the field, the Cru athletic department also continues to receive national recognition. As of press time, four UMHB student athletes had been honored with selections to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI College Division First Team. Men’s soccer players Daniel Green and Mark Miller joined football players Quincy Daniels and Lee Munn on that academic honor squad. The four players will now move on to the Academic All-American ballot. —Jon Wallin

PHILANTHROPY

Philanthropist brings organ music to Manning Chapel Sometimes the best gifts are those which are totally unexpected. Such was the case this fall when, without fanfare or fuss, a gentleman called UMHB’s dean of Christian Studies, Dr. Tim Crawford, and asked if he could give the university an organ for Manning Chapel. The chapel, completed in 2008 as part of the Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center, had never been fitted with an organ. Dean Crawford asked the caller, whom he had never met, if he could check with senior administrators about the offer; ten minutes later, he called the gentleman back and told him the university would be delighted to accept his gift. The caller, Dr. Burton H. Patterson, had no previous ties with UMHB, but true to his word, he purchased a beautiful electronic organ from the Johannus Organ company and came to the campus in October to oversee its installation. With four tiers of keyboards and 393 voices, the organ is definitely a complex instrument, but when the donor sat down to put the organ through its paces, the instrument was clearly responding to the touch of one who knows and loves organ music. A visit with Patterson shed some light on his unexpected but deeply appreciated gift. He recalled that, as a boy growing up in El Paso, he would help out the organist at his church by opening up the organ each Sunday morning, starting the motors of the instrument and putting out the music for that morning. “I hung around all the time listening to that organ,” he said, “and when I was 11 or 12, she gave me the key to the organ. With some

instruction from her, I learned how to play. Then in 1948, when I was 13, she was called to become the organist at First Baptist Church, and I became the organist at our church. It was a huge salary—$5 a month! But minimum wage was 40 cents an hour, and the pay for playing came out to 35 cents an hour, so I figured it wasn’t all that bad.” Patterson went on to pursue a highly successful career in education, law and business, but he never forgot his love of organ music. Feeling that organ music was slowly falling out of favor, he began to watch for churches and schools that needed an organ and then worked to provide an instrument for them. When asked how many organs he has given through the years, he ticks off universities such as Howard Payne, Hardin-Simmons, and Belhaven

College in Jackson, Mississippi. “I kept a list for a while, and it got up to 30 or 35, but I haven’t kept track for several years,” he says with a smile. Why UMHB? “I was attending a meeting in Austin, and I was in no particular hurry going home,” Patterson says. “So I thought, ‘You know, I’ve never seen Mary Hardin-Baylor,’ so I drove over here and was amazed at what a fine campus you have.” A campus staff member suggested that he might like to see the new chapel in the Christian Studies Center. He was taken with the beauty of the space—and the fact that there was no organ there. Serendipity? Perhaps—but as the writer Jerald Panas has suggested, it may be that “serendipity is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” —Paula Price Tanner

The Time is Now C

hallenging economic times mean more complex needs must be met. Now more than ever, charitable giving can represent an important and fulfilling way to make a difference in the lives of others. A large number of charitable gifts are completed during the final months of each year. This is not only a traditional season for giving, but also a time when many choose to review their financial picture, including their charitable giving plans. By carefully planning your charitable gifts—and completing them by December 31—you may enjoy the satisfaction of giving to those in need while increasing your tax refund or reducing any taxes you would otherwise owe next April. For more information, contact Gene Kimes, director of planned giving, 254-295-4608 or giving@umhb.edu

Looking Forward (continued from page 13)

Although we are a month or two away from completing this important work, I would like to share some imperatives for the future that are non-negotiable. First, we will be tenacious in carrying out our mission of preparing students for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society. Second, we will maintain high academic standards, challenging our students with vigorous programs. A global and complex society requires leaders who communicate effectively, who think critically, and who possess discernment and high moral character. We will produce those kinds of leaders only by upholding high academic standards for our students. Our world is becoming more difficult to lead, more challenging to serve, and more in need of faith-informed discernment than ever before. We dare not water down our academic rigor in times like these. Third, we will be a university that is focused on excellent teaching and student learning. Our faculty members bring great passion for their disciplines into their classrooms, which enhances the learning environment for our students. UMHB will continue to be a place where excellent teaching is developed and rewarded. Fourth, we will continue to deliver the hallmark of the Mary HardinBaylor education, personalized attention to our students. This will consist not only of personal interaction with professors in the course of their studies; it will also include personal attention from dedicated staff members who contribute greatly to our students’ success through investment in their lives outside of the classroom. Together, we will all work to help each

student to grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Finally, we will be unapologetic about accomplishing all of this within a distinctively Christian environment. At a time when our culture seems to pull further and further away from Christian principles, UMHB will boldly prepare students in an environment that applauds a personal relationship with Christ. These goals not only set our path for the future, but they reaffirm the foundation on which our school was begun and on which it has operated for these 164 years. My study of our history has made it clear that each of my predecessors had some shared goals and some different goals—but always they focused on what was best for the school and her students. I have had the distinct pleasure of serving under two of Mary HardinBaylor’s finest presidents, Dr. Bobby Parker and Dr. Jerry Bawcom. Although I only served under Dr. Parker for three short years, I was blessed to spend much time with him and learned many valuable lessons. I am not sure there would be a University of Mary Hardin-Baylor today without God’s providence over Dr. Parker’s strong and capable leadership. For the last 18 years, Dr. Jerry Bawcom has taken this university to a place that we used to only dream about. He also took a special interest in my professional growth. He was very patient and kind in sharing his wisdom with me and has been a great mentor. The opportunity we have to continue to work together in service to our students is another personal milestone for me at Mary Hardin-Baylor. Thank you, Dr. Bawcom, for your outstanding service as president, and thank you for making the presidential transition so smooth! Chairman Davis and members of the Board of Trustees, thank you

for the confidence and trust you have placed in me. To all of you, I pledge the very best I have to offer. With the loving encouragement and support of Julie and my family; with the help of the faithful, caring, and dedicated faculty and staff; with the bright minds and energy of our students; with the help of our faithful alumni and friends who invest in our work; with the support of the Board; and especially with the grace of our loving Father, I expect the brightest days for this historic university are still ahead! May God bless each one of you, and may God continue to richly bless the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor as we provide an “Education for Life” and the “Experience of a Lifetime!” Endnotes 1. The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation approved a grant of $40,000 in November for the UMHB Conservatory of Music program. The grant will be used to fund scholarships for K-12 students to take individual lessons in piano, strings, guitar, and vocal performance and to subsidize ensemble groups. Here, a class of Suzuki violin students performs in a holiday concert with the Bell County Symphonic Band. UMHB LIFE | 29
