UNIVERSITY OF MARY

H A R D I N - B AY L O R OFFICE

OF THE

PRESIDENT

I know this theme is repeated year after year, but God continues to bless us with the best and the brightest students. The freshman class of 2005 was once again one of the largest in recent history, with 500 students. Our official enrollment was also at a record high with 2,725, compared to 2,706 last year. With this continued growth, our new student housing, which includes three apartment-style buildings and a commons building, was filled to capacity as soon as the construction was completed. We now turn our focus to the Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center, which will house the College of Christian Studies and the Office of Church Relations. Having received a lead gift of $1 million from Paul and Jane Meyer and the Paul J. Meyer Family Foundation to build the center, we face the challenge of raising an additional $2.5 - $3 million to complete the construction. This project is dependent upon the gifts and grants from our faithful friends before we can break ground. We sincerely appreciate the confidence the Meyer family has placed in our university as we continue our legacy of providing for students to major in Christian studies. Please see more information on the proposed Christian Studies Center on page 12. Over the coming months, you will see changes to the Sanderford Administrative Complex. The new executive offices and president’s suite are being added, and construction is expected to be completed late next fall. This issue celebrates the 25th anniversary of communicating university news and information to our alumni and friends through the magazine, UMHB Life. We are pleased to keep you informed about the events and the life at your alma mater. It is an honor to serve as president of this great university, and Vicky and I continue to be grateful for this special opportunity. Please visit us at your campus soon.

BUSINESS Without Borders Students gain global perspective from studies abroad Vision: The College of Business at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor aspires to be recognized as the leading provider of business education in the region and one of the leading providers in the nation.

Mission: The College of Business supports the mission of UMHB by facilitating and nurturing the professional and personal growth and development of future business leaders in a global business environment through the integration of Christian principles, leadership fundamentals, practical experiences, and sound business concepts into graduate and undergraduate curricula. The articles in this section highlight the ways that our College of Business faculty are helping our students achieve this mission.

n addition to preparing students for life in the domestic business world after graduation, the College of Business also sends students abroad so that they can get a taste of the global business environment. The most recent international trip was to Costa Rica. Eight students went with Dr. Jim King, dean of the College of Business, and Dr. Barbara Dalby, chairperson of the Department of Management and Marketing. Some of the highlights of the visit included a trip to a soup kitchen and a computer center in one of the poorest neighborhoods in San Jose. PuraVida Coffee, a fair trade business based in Seattle, funds the

kitchen. Part of PuraVida’s business concept is to provide services such as this to the impoverished communities of workers that harvest their coffee. For many people who come to the center, this is their only guaranteed meal of the day, and some of them walk an hour to get there. According to Dachia Ray, a business student who went on the trip, this portion of the trip served as “an eye opener.” “I had lived a sheltered life and by going there I saw the lower income people and how they live. By going to Costa Rica, it made me realize that life is not all about money,” she said. The students were able to have

(L-R) Dr. Ty Leonard, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Counseling-Graduate; Bell County Judge Jon Burrows; Dr. Raylene Statz, Department of Psychology Chair; and President Bawcom cut the ceremonial ribbon for the grand opening as members of the Temple and Belton Area Chambers of Commerce gather around.

Counseling Center Opens for Community The Department of Psychology and Counseling opened a new community counseling center in August. The counseling center will help the department meet the counselor training requirements for the program’s accreditation with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP). Under the direction of doctoral faculty, graduate psychology and counseling interns will provide counseling services; enabling them to develop knowledge and skills in mental health counseling, marriage and family Christian counseling and research. The counseling center will offer affordable counseling for the

community with a sliding-scale fee based on family income. Services include counseling for children, adolescents, adults, families and group therapy. Christian family counseling will also be offered to address faith-based issues for families. Group counseling will include parenting, co-parenting, grieving, anger management, body image and eating disorders, employment and work issues, drug and alcohol addiction, and battered spouses. Educational seminars including effective parenting skills, adults and children coping with divorce, dealing with violence in schools, body image and eating disorders and anger management will also be available.

The Department of Music received accreditation through the National Association of Schools of Music Commission on Accreditation in June. NASM has been designated by the United States Department of Education as the only agency responsible for the accreditation of all music curricula in institutions of higher learning. Membership in the Association is considered to be the pinnacle of excellence for any college music program of learning and performance. The NASM Commission commended the university “…for its thorough and well-documented r e s po n s e … ” a n d c e r ti f i e d th e department’s three music degree plans and its Conservatory of Music for pre-college students. The accreditation process encompassed a three-year period and included an institutional selfstudy and peer evaluation by NASM member institutional representatives.

Sport Focus Added to MBA A new graduate program with an emphasis in sport management is being offered through the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. The sport management program is specifically designed for people currently involved in or wanting to start a career in sports administration or management. According to Dr. Mickey Kerr, coordinator for the new program, it is a collaborative effort between the MBA program in the College of Business and the Exercise and Sport Science Department (EXSS) in the College of Education. “We are bringing the best of both worlds together to provide a graduate degree with emphasis in sports through EXSS and the practical business applications offered in the MBA program through the College of Business,” said Kerr. The program is specifically designed to provide leadership and management skills to a person looking to prepare for a professional career in multi-faceted, sport-related opportunities at the corporate, agency, professional and amateur levels. Students will learn the combined curriculum of business management and sport marketing, sport law and the financial aspects of sport management.

Choral Group Sings in Germany More than 30 students in the Concert Choir and One Voice traveled to Germany and Austria this summer to participate in a Partnership Mission project coordinated by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The choirs performed at local churches and schools under the direction of David Guess, director of choral activities. They also sang for the annual meeting of evangelical Christians in Steyr, Austria. “The students were able to see that God is the same God to people around the world and that the main difference is the way we perceive Him and the traditions in which we are raised. This gives the students a broader perspective,” said Guess. According to Guess, the historical sites the students visited provided a continuing educational process for them. “Singing in venues with amazing acoustics and aged historical significance helped solidify the ensembles’ perspective of choral music and choral sound. It gave the students a first-hand connection with so much of our early history, both musically and historically,” said Guess. Choir members gather in front of a statue of Mozart in Vienna.

Athletic Training Education Program Receives Accreditation Through National Agency The Department of Exercise and Sport Science has received accreditation for the Athletic Training Education Program. UMHB is now one of 14 colleges in the state of Texas with Committee for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accreditation. CAAHEP accreditation allows students from UMHB to become both state licensed and nationally certified athletic trainers. The university has been working with the accrediting agency for several years to gain this national accreditation. The athletic training program began in 1990 when the university hired a full-time trainer.

Today, the exercise and sport science department has four full-time faculty positions and two additional trainers. According to Courtney Burken, director of the athletic training program, the program now meets all the accreditation criteria. “With our clinical instructors and faculty, the new state-of-the-art facilities in the Mayborn Campus Center, the administrative support and our program structure, we are able to provide excellent opportunities to students in the classroom and through clinical experiences,” said Burken. This accreditation places UMHB as one of 338 such programs in the

nation. The program includes a science-based curriculum with classroom experiences and clinical education where students actually work with athletes. Clinical sites include high schools, colleges, professional sports medicine clinics, emergency medical services, general physician’s orthopedic offices and surgical rotations. Students can major in athletic training, earning a degree in exercise and sport science (EXSS). The major can be combined with teaching certification or pre-med/pre-physical therapy.

Campus Life Computer Science Program Changes Several positive changes have taken place in the Department of Computer Science. The department has moved to the College of Sciences and Humanities. It was previously part of the College of Business. According to Dr. Bill Tanner, department chairman, these changes have been in process for several years and are now fully implemented. “We have been working for several years to bring computer science into the College of Sciences and Humanities, and we are pleased it took effect this fall,” said Tanner. The Department of Computer Science is working toward receiving national accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), specifically with the Computer Science Commission. According to Dr. Tanner, a crucial step toward receiving such an accreditation is that the program

be housed within the College of Sciences and Humanities. “Our students deserve to have a degree that is accredited with ABET,” said Tanner, “and this move is the first step to bringing that about.” Though the program will not significantly change in structure or curriculum as a result of the move, Tanner says courses are continually updated to meet the needs of the students. “For the past several years we have created courses in the program which are balanced in their approach to science, math and technology. Our program is interdisciplinary and provides the best training for students to be successful in the field of computer science,” said Tanner. Since 2000, the computer science faculty have worked to align the curriculum with national standards so students will receive a broad education in the fundamental theoretical

principles and applied technical knowledge of computer science. According to Tanner, the ultimate goal will remain the same, to educate computer professionals for careers in industry, government or academia.

MBA Program Revamped Changes to the master’s degree in business administration (MBA) program took effect in the fall semester. The courses are now offered in a new series of 8-week sessions, with three tracks and an international trip. Each class totals two credit hours. By taking two classes, a student will receive a total of eight credit hours during each semester, compared to the old system of six credit hours per semester. Students will be able to achieve a total of 16 credit hours in one year during the four 8-week blocks. This compares to 12 credit hours per year in the old system. Students taking four classes each 8week session can complete the program within one year. The courses meet the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation requirements. The MBA classes will continue to be offered at night to accommodate the working professional. Most of the classes will meet one night per week for three and one-half hours. There are four graduate programs in business which will be offered in the new accelerated format. These include the Master of Business Administration degree (MBA), the MBA accounting track for students who want to take the CPA exam, the new MBA sport management track, and the Master of Science degree in Information Systems (MSIS).

University Recognized Again as One of ‘America’s Best Colleges’ The university was once again ranked in the top tier of the U.S. News & World Report: America’s Best Colleges 2006. This year, the university moved up in their overall ranking to 43 compared to 47 last year. This was the second consecutive year that UMHB has ranked in the top tier of the Best Universities, Master’s-West. The Master’s category refers to colleges and universities that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs. The overall rankings are based on a survey of peer institutions and up to 15 indicators of academic excellence, including retention rate, financial resources, class size, student-faculty ratio, proportion of fulltime faculty, student selectivity and alumni giving.

UMHB’s ranking rose in several categories, including peer assessment, average freshman retention rate, student-to-faculty ratio and freshmen in top 25 percent of their high school classes. The university was also recognized for the first time as one of America’s best Christian Colleges according to the 9 th edition of America’s Best Christian Colleges. UMHB was one of 157 colleges nationwide to receive this prestigious designation and was one of only seven Christian colleges in the state of Texas to receive this commendation. “Once again, UMHB earns national recognition, and we are especially pleased that this recognition is for what we do best – provide a quality education in a Christian environment and with Christian principles,” said Dr. Bawcom.

Years!

MHB Life, the official alumni magazine for the university, is 25 years old. It has evolved over its 25 years of publication to reflect the alumni’s continued active role in the life and growth of UMHB. The university has kept alumni informed of campus events for many years by various newsletters, but the official magazine, in its present form, started in 1980. Some early examples of the school’s desire to keep alumni in touch with each other and with the university can be found in early published lists of members of the

10 | UMHB LIFE

Alumni Association in 1885, and in copies of a publication begun in 1898 called ‘Our B’s,’ – a bi-monthly literary and alumni news bulletin. There has not been an exact documented history of the magazine, but when Betty Sue Craven Beebe ’61, Director of Alumni Development, and Kay Anderson ’63, former coeditor of UMHB News Magazine, gathered information on the Alumni Association for its 100th anniversary, they found the first issue of the Baylor College News was published April 1931, and in the 1970s, another type of newsletter called The Forum began

to be printed. In 1980, former president Dr. Bobby E. Parker decided to combine the two publications into a new magazine format and titled the publication University of Mary HardinBaylor News. This new format would be a way to not only help keep alumni informed about their fellow graduates, but also give them a way to stay connected to the college and its growth. “For me, when I came as Director of Alumni Affairs in April 1981, one of my goals was to provide more information about the growth and

Q & A : What’s Changed? progress of UMHB, and particularly, to let alumni know what it was like for current students on campus,” said Mrs. Beebe. “We were still coming out of the ‘going coed’ era and some alumni were trying to decide what the campus must be like with men and women. More than that, I felt that alumni should know about new academic programs, faculty members, new or renovated facilities and student activities. UMHB was growing and keeping up with developments in various fields of study. All of these things reassured alumni that this campus was a great place to get an education.” Since 1980, the magazine, which was renamed UMHB Life in the spring of 2004, has continued to change in form and style. It has also continued to grow, along with the school’s enrollment, in circulation to alumni members. It is estimated that the magazine was sent to approximately 4,500 alumni in 1981, but that list quickly grew to 6,000. The summer 2005 issue was mailed to 11,358 households (some including two graduates) to reach more than 12,400 alumni. Today, the alumni magazine is available on-line through the Alumni Website and On-line Community. Also through the website, alumni are able to stay connected with events and activities happening in the association as well as instantaneously view and post pictures of weddings, babies, trips, etc. But these tools simply add to the various ways the university communicates with alumni, and UMHB Life will continue to be a vital part of that communication. The magazine will continue to provide alumni a way to stay informed about what is happening at their alma mater and how they can be a part of its future.

UMHB Life: How has UMHB changed in the past 25 years? “Technology has greatly increased. I think our overall pur pose/mission/values have remained the same— just accomplished in a different manner. Students still have ready access to faculty: before and after class; at various functions on campus; in the dining hall, SUB, bookstore, athletic events; and as faculty sponsor organizations. Students can leave voice mail or email messages to set up appointments.” – Linda Pehl dean of the College of Nursing “In the Department of Music, we have grown tremendously in the number of students and in the performing ensembles available to them. Bands, choirs, opera and theater are growing. We achieved a long-time goal this year we were awarded full accreditation and membership in the National Association of Schools of Music. What a feather in the cap of our faculty and students.” – Guy Wilson associate professor of music. “The addition of full-time male students has had a significant impact on the mathematics depar tment. We have had a noticeable increase in math majors beyond the overall increase in enrollment. In mathematics we call that ‘a percentage increase of a numerical increase’ … or ‘nice’ for short.” – Max Hart associate professor of mathematics

UMHB Life: How important do you feel it is to keep alumni of the school informed about the ways UMHB continues to grow? “It is absolutely essential for UMHB alumni to be infor med about cur r ent univer sity programs, events, changes and additions. The Alumni Association, its director and his program, and events directed toward alums seem to be increasing in scope and frequency. There seems to be a growing awareness that younger alumni relate to their alma mater differently than previous generations. Our alumni-focused staff appears to be attentive to this trend and is adjusting strategically.” – Dr. George Stansbury dean of the College of Fine Arts UMHB Life: How do you see the school growing in the next 25 years? “I would like to think that the school would still be on the cutting edge of progress and be a leader in the line of schools our size in the private school sector. I just hope that I can be around to see what another 25 years can do for UMHB. I would like to think that buildings will be added, especially a Performing Ar ts Center for music, opera and other big ventures. We have so many really great things and people here who are building on hosts of mighty names from the past and those in the present to lay a great foundation for those who will follow us on into the future.” – Mrs. Glenda Bundick associate professor of music

Philanthropy Potts Provide $100,000 Gift Annuity

Plans Progress for Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center Construction of the future Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center is key to the future academic success in the College of Christian Studies and for the university as a whole. With the goal of increasing the current 100 majors to 250 students majoring in Christian studies, the College of Christian Studies needs a central facility. For the College of Christian Studies to reach its potential for growth, this $4 million facility must be built to provide needed classrooms, seminar rooms, faculty

offices and meeting rooms for its academic programs. Growing enrollments have increased the demand for classroom space, especially for larger core curriculum courses such as Old Testament Survey and New Testament Survey. The center will also offer suitable seminar space for area ministers and lay leaders; their visits to the campus will better acquaint these Christian leaders with the programs offered at UMHB.

Roy and Jean Gray Potts ’49 recently completed a $100,000 charitable gift annuity that will benefit the university. They will receive income from the gift annuity for their life times, and then the university will receive the principal. The gift is unrestricted, which means the university may use the proceeds for any educational purposes deemed appropriate. According to the Potts, their desire is to continue to provide for the university beyond their own lifetimes. The Potts have been long-time benefactors of the university. As I write my final letter as president of the Alumni Association, I cannot help but think of the changes that have occurred in the world around us. Most recently, hurricanes Katrina and Rita played havoc with hearts and homes, leaving mass destruction in their wakes. Survivors and returning evacuees searched areas where homes and neighborhoods once stood seeking to find items that made up their daily lives. Often the remark was made, “We have nothing but our memories.” Many of you may have been touched by these disasters, either directly or indirectly. You may have met and cared for storm evacuees as did those of us in Belton and at UMHB. Nearly 90 people, with little worldly goods, but hearts filled with memories, made their way to the First Baptist Church shelter. The church sprang into action and the community gave strong support. UMHB students came between and after classes to do crafts, play basketball or just hang out with the children. The student ensemble, One Voice, arrived at the shelter, put on a concert, and didn’t want to leave. Several evacuees were accepted at UMHB where they are attending classes. The disasters touched each of us in different ways; two common threads are “change” and “memories.” The UMHB Alumni Association also is in the midst of change; although not catastrophic, the change is noteworthy. A new president has been elected; Rebecca O’Banion ’93 will be an outstanding influence as she leads the board in great accomplishments. After serving as your president for more than three years, I can bask in the memories of productive board meetings and the privilege of working alongside fantastic board members. Your Alumni Association is in good hands with Director Robby Jackson and Assistant Director Amy Wick. Their vision, enthusiasm and commitment are evident in all they do. You, dear alumni, are important to the university and the Alumni Association. You can pray, you can show support by participating at events, and you can give financially on a regular basis. Remember, you have a story to tell, a UMHB success story, tell it often. God bless you. It has been my joy and honor to serve you and our beloved university.

From Sea to Shining Sea Alumni bicycle across America for Armstrong Foundation

Brady Johnston ’03, (L) and Anthony Deringer set out on their journey.

W

hen it came to giving to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and working to help people learn about the charity organization, Brady Johnston ’03, and a friend, Anthony Deringer, current student, decided that they wanted to do more than what would be considered the normal donation. Instead, the two set off across country on a 66-day bicycle trip in May 2005 to raise awareness for the foundation.

16 | UMHB LIFE

Brady was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor in 1995 but survived the ordeal and graduated from UMHB with a degree in religion. He now lives in Salado and is the associate and youth minister for Salado Methodist Church. Brady and Anthony came up with the idea of cycling across country through a similar trip of a mutual friend. The two thought it would be a good way to have fun and also

experience something challenging. After months of “tossing the idea around,” the two decided to set a date for the trip and started planning the event. Once they started seriously thinking about the trip, Brady decided it would be a good way to help raise awareness for the Armstrong Foundation and also tell the story of a friend that he had lost to leukemia in 2004. “At the time, a friend of mine, Alex Dierking, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of eight. Having two young nephews, that hit me pretty hard,” Brady said. “I wanted to do anything I could to help his family out. He died on December 12, 2004. It was really hard on them, and we decided to dedicate the ride in his memory. All the proceeds and awareness would go in his name.” The two friends, who were both attending school and working at the time, soon discovered that not only the trip would be a difficult undertaking, but the amount of planning and preparing would also prove to be a challenge. The two had to work up a budget for how much

the trip would cost, decide on the type of gear they would need, work out maps for the routes they intended to follow, work out plane tickets and work out a timeline for the whole event. Finally, and most importantly, they had to decide how they would spread the word about the Armstrong Foundation. The cross-country trip started with the two friends putting their rear tires in the Pacific Ocean and ended in August when they rolled their front tires into the Atlantic Ocean. “We’d wake up around 7:30, eat breakfast, then we’d ride until lunch. We’d take a nice break then hit the road again until dinner. We usually rode for 6-7 hours a day,” Johnston explained. “We camped almost every night out West. We stayed in a hotel two times the first month (because of a mud slide/rain storm and because of rain in 20 degree temperatures). We spent almost all of our time outside. The only time we went indoors was to eat dinner.” Although the miles the friends covered were difficult, Johnston said the entire trip helped him appreciate “God’s wonderful creation,” and the sense of freedom that came along with that “kind of exposure to nature.” This appreciation helped keep him from missing home too much and kept him from wanting to quit his trip early. “Riding out east was more frustrating because there weren’t any shoulders on the roads. We almost got hit everyday, so that took some of the fun out of it,” he said. “Out west everything was so big and the roads were fairly safe.” The open road also taught him to rely on God, and the difference between looking to God for comfort in his daily life and in being away from that comfort.

Brady said it is not always easy to see God in the midst of daily routine, and this trip took him far away from the routine. He also had to deal with the reminder of his past health problems and how the stress of the trip might take its toll on his body. This threat could mean ending his trip early - which was something that he would consider a failure.

“In the end, I decided it was better to have the courage to give it my all and fail than not try at all.” –Brady Johnston ’03 “My goal was to finish the trip, but I had to deal with the option that we might not finish. Because of past health problems (brain tumor), I was told by my doctor that my body might not be able to handle that much stress. Then I would be forced to come home. I didn’t want to have to quit, not under any circumstance,” Brady explained. “I struggled with whether or not to even attempt it because I didn’t want to face ridicule if I had to come back. In the end, I decided it was better to have the

courage to give it my all and fail than not try at all.” Still, Johnston knew he would have to give up his life on the open road by August 15 because he had responsibilities waiting for him at his new job at Salado Methodist Church. He also knew this experience would be something that he could share with the youth and adults at his new church for some time to come. Although some people thought the two friends were crazy for taking the trip, Brady said he believes the experience has given him a way to help reach kids and adults and that the response is mostly positive. The overall experience is sometimes difficult for people to understand, mostly because they have not shared a similar experience, but the adventure aspect of two friends hitting the open road is something most people find appealing. “I love to incorporate adventure into my youth programs. Everyone loves adventure, maybe not a trip like this, but there’s something that gets them going, especially youth,” he said. “It’s a great tool to use to teach them about their faith journey.” Brady also believes the trip was a way for people to learn about the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and how important it is for people to support it. It provided a way for Johnston to talk about how important it is to support organizations that assist those dealing with cancer. “It (the LAF and other organizations) provides support for those struggling with cancer and lets them know that others care,” Brady said. “Who knows, maybe someday we can find a cure so that young kids like Alex won’t have to leave this world at such a young age.”

“So why do you give?” Loyalty Fund — for life. We remember our years at UMHB with pride. The time we spent there is full of great memories of friends, fun and learning. The scholarships we received allowed us the opportunity to attend UMHB. This gave us a chance to excel in our sport, make lasting friendships, and receive a wonderful, high quality, Christian-based education. We believe this education gave us a solid foundation on which we have built our lives. At this time, as we are trying to save for our own children’s college education, it is important that we remember the opportunities given to us at UMHB and to give back however large or small. We feel that our lives have been blessed in so many ways by the people we met, the classes we attended, and the professors who taught us. It is for those reasons that we gladly give back to the UMHB Loyalty Fund. —Scott and Jill Smajstrla —Class of 1989

g n i l ! l i n Ca m u l A All The next time the phone rings, Melissa, Justin or Lindsay may be calling! The Alumni Development Office is conducting a Phonathon throughout the school year and these UMHB students are making calls daily – both during the day and in the evening.

Junior Melissa Aquino of Heidellberg, Germany, Psychology

Sophomore Lindsey Harkrider of Boerne, Marketing

The Phonathon mission is three-fold: • Share exciting UMHB news with you. • Make sure your records are current. • Request your support for the Loyalty Fund.

We hope you will take this opportunity to reconnect with UMHB and consider a gift to the Loyalty Fund. All gifts made to the Loyalty Fund go to support student scholarships.

Freshman Justin Clarke of Austin, Management

The Purple Crush is On! Temple Bottling Company, the local Dr Pepper bottler, introduced a new Purple Crush/Grape Crush soft drink can to kick-off the 2005 Crusader football season. Representatives from the university and Temple Bottling Company unveiled the new can at a press conference in September, in the Mayborn Campus Center. The can includes the new Purple Crush logo on the traditional Grape Crush soft drink can. The company also donated a 20 foot tall inflatable can. Temple Bottling Company has been bottling soft drinks in Central Texas since 1924, and Grape Crush was introduced in 1960.

Vice President and General Manager of Temple Bottling Company Bruce Connor, President Jerry Bawcom and Head Football Coach Pete Fredenburg unveil The Purple Crush soda can during a press conference on campus.
