Greetings from the Dean We have missed you! The past months have been hard on all of us. We miss the hugs of our friends and the handshakes of new acquaintances. We lament the loss of canceled performances and arts events. We have been separated and isolated, desperately longing for connection. When we have faced such heartbreak in the past, we turned to the arts to express our grief and to find comfort. The arts are a part of the human spirit, a part of how we cope and survive. When we have no words we look to the arts to communicate. The pandemic hit us particularly hard because it took away the opportunity to come together as artists to create new work together to share with a hurting world. But we know that our Creator God gave the gift of creativity for just such times. If you are ready to come back to the concert hall and the art gallery, we look forward to welcoming you! If you are not quite ready to gather again, we have ways for you to join us virtually. I invite you on this journey with us as we reconnect and renew our spirits through the precious gift of the arts.

Guest Artists Daniel Hsu, piano American pianist Daniel Hsu is increasingly recognized for his easy virtuosity and bold musicianship. He captured the bronze medal and prizes for best performance of both the commissioned work and chamber music at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and is also a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist, first prize winner of the 2015 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition, and bronze medalist of the 2015 International Piano Competition. This program is presented in collaboration with the Temple Symphony Orchestra. Cantus
Cantus Cantus, an engaging men’s vocal ensemble, is widely known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming and riveting performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. As one of the nation’s few full-time vocal ensembles, Cantus has grown in prominence with its distinctive approach to music-making. Working without a conductor, the members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process. In a typical year, Cantus performs more than 60 concerts both in national and international touring, and in its home of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Cantus has performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, UCLA, San Francisco Performances, and Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. Cantus has released 18 recordings on the group’s self-titled label and has recently signed with British record label Signum to release the COVID-19 Sessions and Manifesto, the ensemble’s most recent studio album. The Queen’s Cartoonists The Queen’s Cartoonists are on a musical mission of equal parts performance, preservation, and education. The band plays music from classic cartoons and contemporary animation while synchronizing the music to video projections of the original films. The audience follows the band through a world of virtuosic musicianship, multi-instrumental mayhem, and comedy. Expect the unexpected from repertoire that includes the Golden Age of animation, cult cartoon classics, modern animation, and elements of a musical circus! Altin Sencalar, jazz trombone Altin Sencalar will be presenting new music from his 3rd CD titled, “Reconnected” on the New City Record Label, Outside in Music/Next Level. He has been hailed as “...providing a brilliance in his sound with crystal clear articulations and impressive control of the wide possibilities of the instrument” by the International Trombone Association Journal. This performance will feature Sencalar’s trio of Daniel Dufour on drum set, Dr. Utah Hamrick on bass, and three times GRAMMY winning trumpeter, Dr. Pete Rodriguez. Professor Sencalar currently directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches Applied Trombone at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He has performed with jazz and pop luminaries such as DeeDee Bridgewater, Dafnis Prieto, Rodney Whitaker, Christian McBride, Teri Lynn Carrington, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Big Sean, Joe Jonas, and many others. Michelle Schumann, piano Preludes/Beginnings with pianist, Michelle Schumann, features Frederic Chopin’s 24 Preludes set to a dance film featuring the choreography of Stephen Mills and Ballet Austin. Dr. Schumann serves as Professor of Piano at the University of Mary HardinBaylor, a position she has held since 2002. She received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin and holds a Young Artist Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Performance Diploma from the Vienna Conservatory. Matthew Kundler, euphonium Matthew Kundler has garnered an international reputation as a soloist, chamber musician and educator, receiving prizes and recognition in numerous international competitions and conducting masterclasses across the United States. Dr. Kundler will perform an electronic music program that deals with the relationship between humanity and technology by composers like Kevin Day, Bracha Bdil, Jose Flores, and Brooke Pierson. Joseph Palmer with the Texas Guitar Quartet Formed in 2009, the Texas Guitar Quartet has been hailed as “Impeccable in every respect” by Classical Guitar Magazine. Throughout the United States, Central America, Spain and China, audiences have embraced the quartet for their daring programs, dazzling virtuosity and joyful music making. The concert will include orchestral works from Rossini, Beethoven and Ravel that have been boldly reimagined for four guitars, as well as some exciting newly written works by Clarice Assad, and Carlos Rafael Rivera. The group is currently working on recording their third studio album which will be released Spring 2022. The TxGQ is Isaac Bustos, Joseph Palmer, Jay Kacherski, and Alejandro Montiel. Dean’s Series Kathryn Fouse, piano Let the Games Begin with Kathryn Fouse, piano. Join us for an entertaining evening of music from popular video games. As a proponent of new music, Dr. Fouse enjoys crossing boundaries to explore the wealth of musical opportunities that may be found in nontraditional settings. If you love the games, you will delight in hearing the music in a new context. If you don’t know the games, you likely will be surprised by the beauty and depth of these works. Dean Fouse holds degrees in Piano Performance from Baylor University (BM), Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (MM) and the University of North Texas (DMA). Jonathan and Emily Gary, piano duo Emily and Jonathan Gary have performed as a Piano Duo since 2001. Each holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and they met when pursuing Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy and Performance degrees at Baylor University. They have performed at concert venues, for community events, and at churches across Texas, Alabama, and overseas. C3: Conversations in Christianity + Culture The Arts and Justice
Playing as Others
Join us for a conversation between Dr. Aida Ramos, Associate Professor of Sociology at UMHB, and Nery Lemus, Visiting Visual Artist, about the role of the arts in advocating for justice. The subjects in Lemus’s work range from issues of stereotype and immigration to problems in society that can lead to the failure of families, such as poverty, abuse, and neglect. The discussion will focus around the idea of Imago Dei and the passions for creativity and justice.
Playing as Others traces the development of video game culture in response to marginalization and explores the ways in which the content of video games can generate theological insight and positive ethical impact. Benjamin Chicka shows how the interactivity and compelling narratives provided by emerging styles of video games can provide powerful lessons in listening to, accepting, and helping those often harmed or outright neglected by society. Bringing Paul Tillich’s theology of culture into conversation with Emmanuel Levinas’ ethical concept of responsibility toward the other, Chicka shows that video games as art form aid in the overcoming of estrangement.

Senior Exhibits
Jeffery Carl is an artist based outside Chicago, whose work explores how our relationship to geography informs our self-understanding, the development of communities, and the ways in which we shape our environment. He earned a BFA in Illustration, an MA in Studio Art, and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from Northern Illinois University, and teaches at Judson University, where he also serves as Gallery Director and Chair of the Department of Art & Design.

This holiday tradition returns with a special night of performances featuring UMHB’s vocal and instrumental ensembles celebrating the birth of Christ. This year’s program will focus on peace. As part of the celebration, the Department of Art will extend its annual Christmas Art Sale to Fikes Chamber Hall starting at 6 PM.
