Two Department leaders have been selected as department chairs at two different institutions in Pennsylvania. Mack T. Ruffin IV, M.D., M.P.H., the former Dr. Max and Buena Research Professor of Family Medicine, is the Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. And, Grant M. Greenberg, M.D., M.H.S.A., M.A., former assistant professor and associate chair for information management and quality, has just started as chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Penn. During his 27 years with the Department, Dr. Ruffin, a talented researcher, helped to develop the Department into one of the top family medicine research programs in the country. For the past 12 years, he led the research team as the associate chair for research programs. He was named the Dr. Max and Buena Lichter Research Professor in 2011. Under his leadership the Department has remained in the top ten of NIH funding within family medicine.

Dr. Ruffin’s research focuses on cancer prevention, chemoprevention and cancer screening. He is dedicated to changing patient and physician practices to promote cancer prevention. A well-respected academic family physician, Dr. Ruffin has published more than 150 articles in peerreviewed journals, 13 book chapters, 20 commentaries, and one book. Dr. Greenberg also has had a tremendous impact on the Department during his 16 years as a faculty member. For the past four years, he has managed the Department’s IT efforts and directed all quality projects. Beyond the Department, he held prominent roles with the University of Michigan Medical Group. Through multiple roles focused on quality, he evolved into a quality and lean thinking expert. His leadership in these medical school positions kept the Department at the forefront of quality improvement. Passionate about technology and change management, he led the Department through the transition from an internal
