HUMAN RIGHTS DAYS The Human Rights Days in Umeå in November 2014 will spotlight a variety of human rights issues. The aim is to raise awareness about human rights and to enhance and intensify regional HR efforts.

8 SEASON CONCERTS – Works for the 2014 Jazz Festival For the autumn concert an established jazz musician has written a piece for the NorrlandsOperan symphony orchestra which promises to swing in its very own special way. The piece, a grand tribute to jazz itself, continues a long tradition of the Umeå Jazz Festival of arranging a concert with the symphony orchestra.

8 SAMI ARTISTS – Joar Nango What is a public place? Architect and artist Joar Nango tries to answer this question in his 2014 project for Bildmuseet, which takes a closer look at Umeå’s public places. He studies and comments on architectural environments and contexts. Nango’s previous projects include an investigation of Sami building traditions.

FAIR CITY – Theme: children’s rights Since UN Day falls during the ‘season of driving force’ Kulturverket, BRIS (Children’s Rights in Society) and the Fair City project are focusing on children’s rights. Schoolchildren from Umeå’s Marie district consider how we can improve the lives of children in the future, not just in Umeå but worldwide.

Challenging Power – National conference on gender In 2014 Umeå will host G14, a national conference focusing on gender studies and equality. The conference will be held in the autumn by the Municipality of Umeå, the county administrative board of Västerbotten and the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS) at Umeå University.
