Mr. Ron Kohn & Ms. Elizabeth Chifari
Fridays, 10-11:45 a.m. | $80

Course Description: Some great works of literature are best read aloud in a group setting. The Classics Reading Group has tackled Shakespeare's plays, The Odyssey, The Iliad, The Aeneid, The Canterbury Tales, and much more. This session we will read The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, published in Italian in 1620. This masterpiece of literature is structured as a frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of 10 people sheltering in a villa outside Florence during the Black Death. The tales all deal with love and range from the humorous to the erotic to the tragic. We will be reading the tales out loud in a modern English translation. Time will be set aside to discuss the significance of the stories and the work as a whole on world literature. And certainly, we'll be drawing parallels to our own recent Covid lockdown!
Note: The class is limited to 12 students, so that everyone gets ample opportunity to read.
