OUR MISSION The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s Artist Partner Program is committed to bringing communities together through shared experiences with the performing arts. Through on and off campus partnerships, we are mission driven to use the arts to supplement and extend academic learning and investigation for students in the School of Music and the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, as well as UMD students across disciplines. As part of a public research university, we also provide artistic and cultural opportunities that nurture the arts ecology of Greater College Park.

Partners and Friends! The arts have a central role in the intellectual, cultural, and creative interchange that is at the core of building a strong campus and a thriving community. The Clarice’s Artist Partner Program at the University of Maryland nurtures active participation in creative investigation of what it means to be alive. Our strength lies in our robust partnerships with both campus and community groups, where we generate access to the arts and animate engagement in creative expression, celebrating who we are and all that we can be. And, we have fun! There are multiple ways to connect to the Artist Partner Program

The talent and experience of our artists, our campus and our community are always the starting point for developing dialogue about the ways in which the arts can frame, reflect and direct our understanding of how we live now. We believe artistic expression is both an intrinsic need and a public responsibility. As humans we have the capacity to think and feel deeply and broadly. Our partnerships reflect that basic understanding. We allow ourselves to investigate, test and respond. Above all, we believe that we all have something important to share, something significant to learn and

for UMD students; and the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, which is developing the next generation of musicians and leaders. The Artist Partner Program also includes NextLOOK, our community partnership with Joe’s Movement Emporium supporting local and regional artists; and MilkBoy ArtHouse, the only campus-community arts venue of its kind in the country.

VISITING ARTIST SERIES The Visiting Artist Series brings regional, national and international artists to the UMD campus through six performance series: Dance, Theater, Chamber Music, Global Music, Jazz and the Speed of Sound Sessions, which champions the music of composers from the last ten years. Beyond the stunning work these artists bring to the stage, they are also committed to extending the learning of students as well as creating exciting connections and opportunities across campus and throughout the community.

It is really exciting to see The Clarice bringing in artists that are pushing the boundaries of contemporary music yet commercial enough to a point where they’re collaborating with some of our favorite artists! Dean Emerson ‘18, BA in Jazz Bass re: Colin Stetson visit to Music History class

NATIONAL ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTE + FESTIVAL For more than a generation, the National Orchestral Institute + Festival has nurtured the development of America’s most gifted young orchestral musicians, forging a bright path for the future of orchestras. During this month-long festival of electrifying performances, these young artists perform with commitment and prowess.

Invaluable insight into orchestral playing from some of the greatest musicians in the country’s leading symphonies. The faculty has been beyond amazing, from the conductors and instrumentalists to the librarians and stage crew. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and have had one of the most professional and musically fulfilling summer performance experiences of my life.

NEXTNOW FEST Held each September, NextNOW Fest is a multi-day, multi-arts festival that celebrates imagination, creativity and community. By amplifying the voices of intriguing, inventive artists from around the UMD campus and the country, NextNOW Fest creates a forward-looking microcosm where art transforms and shapes the future.

Going to NextNOW Fest my first semester, I knew I picked the right place to make my home for the next four years. NextNOW Fest showed me there was a community of artists here at UMD.

Emily Gorey ‘20, BS in Marketing

In addition to performances by visiting artists, the lineup included performances by UMD students in the School of Music; School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies; Maryland Filmmakers club and the Terrapin Record Label.

The Alumni Commissioning Project supports the creation of new music, dance and plays by alumni of the School of Music and the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies.

Painted during NextNOW Fest 2017, the Unity Mural brought together students and faculty from Bowie State University and University of Maryland, to take a stand against divisiveness and reflect upon themes of peace, justice and unity. This collaboration presented an opportunity for students to spark a dialogue and a call to action for both campus communities.

CAMPUS + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Strengthened by partnerships with campus and community entities, engagement programs provide opportunities for audiences and students to exchange ideas and actively participate with artists and, ultimately, connect the performing arts at Maryland to the larger campus and the local community.

My experience with wild Up was memorable and transformative. It changed the way I think about creating music, giving concerts and interacting with the world.

DONORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE Through your generous support, the larger Maryland community is able to experience the performing arts in new and profound ways. Your gifts provide unparalleled learning opportunities for our students to understand the cultures of the world, help faculty infuse creativity and innovation into their curriculum and expand opportunities for us to collaborate with local artists in the creation of original works.

THANK YOU!

For 15 years, my husband and I have been delighted to have The Clarice within walking distance to our home. We marvel at the talent of the students and enjoy the performances immensely. Getting to know many of them through community activities has been a joy and an incentive.
