to the upcoming 53rd gathering

Black

Brown pastors, District Superintendents,

members,

Jurisdiction of The United Methodist

This soon to be realized goal has our executive team energized for the churches in the Southeastern Jurisdiction as it is our vision to improve the ministry and kingdom building footprint of Black Methodism. As your BMCR Coordinator, I understand the need to wake the sleeping giant of Advocacy and activism that is the Black Church. My understanding comes from my hands-on experience serving as pastor of Wesley Chapel UMC in the Deep River Community of Lake City South Carolina – a church with a membership of 499 and a pandemic worship attendance of seventy-five. In light of our current climate, our church consistently falls below our needed weekly budget amount three of the four Sundays of the month. Can you relate to this reality? Then you won’t want to miss the Annual Meeting of BMCR!

The theme for this 53rd annual meeting of BMCR, A Woke Black Church: Reminiscent, Intergenerational, and Resilient. In Romans 5:3-5 The Apostle Paul teaches us that trauma and drama are God's great proving ground for the awakening of faith, and God graciously takes us through trials so that our faith will be genuine and so we will have the hope that does not disappoint! What Paul is saying is that the gospel strengthens us through the Spirit to see things in our society that others cannot. We are called, as the people of God, to wake up and to show up! This is a call for BMCR in the Southeastern Jurisdiction to be A Woke Black Church, one that encourages the Body of Christ to utilize the mind of Christ and to be fully awake to the issues of race and injustice in this country.

Pan-Africanists and Black Nationalists use the term “woke” to refer to no longer being naïve nor in mental slavery. Hopefully, in 2022 SEJ BMCR can borrow the term and redeem it to be used in the context of being awakened from deadened, sinful thinking. Being woke has to do with seeing all the issues and connecting cultural, socio-economic, philosophical, historical, and ethical dots. I watch the recent movie “The Beast” with Idris Elba wherein he stars as recently widowed Doctor who visits a South African game reserve with his two teenage daughters. Whilst on the trip the family must fight to survive when stalked by an injured lion. At a turning point in the movie, they take shelter a small chapel. What caught my theological imagination was the prophetic idea that when life was at its most traumatic, when the family was about be consumed by the raging lion - seeking to steal, kill and destroy them, the place they found safety was the church. The Church, even when broken and abandoned, is still the place of refuge, resilience, repair, renewal, and for revival!

As your coordinator, I hope to celebrate and demonstrate what it looks like to be A Woke Black Church – one that is resilient in the face of major cultural shifts facing The Methodist Church specifically, and our society as a whole. I pray that you will meet me at the gathering! You are Invited…

ANNUAL MEETING AGENDA

OCTOBER 13-15, 2022

“A Woke Black Church: Reminiscent, Intergenerational, and Resilient”

Which reminds us that there is more to come.

There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we’re never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary—we can’t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit Based on (Romans 5:3-5, The Message)

PASTOR SCOT C. MOORE

In Washington, Pastor Moore immersed himself in the ministry of the A.M.E. Zion Church. His first sermon was in 1994 and by 1995 he was ordained a Deacon by Bishop Milton Williams. Within three years of dedicated service, Pastor Moore was ordained an Elder on May 24, 1997, receiving full authority to consecrate the elements for communion and perform all rites and rituals within the A.M.E. Zion Church.

In 1996, Pastor Moore was presented with the challenge of expanding the presence of the A.M.E. Zion Church in the much needed area of Mitchellville. With three months of devoted prayer, perseverance, and meticulous planning, Pastor Moore founded a brand new church and named it Judah Temple. The first service in this house of praise was held in August of 1996 with an astounding 550 people in attendance. Judah Temple became a “Church with a heart of praise and a mind to serve.” 120 people became active members by the end of the year.

Membership steadily grew until all available space was exhausted. In response, the church purchased a 23-acre piece of land to build a campus to be known as the “Land of Judah.” Planning and construction began and by July of 2004 the sanctuary was completed and dedicated for worship. Pastor Moore’s commitment to seeing the dream of a “house of praise” was rewarded with the first service held in the new sanctuary on March 12, 2006.

In July 2016, Pastor Moore was appointed as the Connectional Director of Men for the A.M.E. Zion Church. His focused attention is on creating and expanding a support network for men to learn to become better Christians, husbands, fathers, and workers. Pastor Moore continues to impact lives through active leadership and participation in ministries, workshops, conferences, and classes. He travels extensively through America, Europe, South Africa and the Caribbean to preach and guide.

In October 2018, Pastor Moore was appointed Presiding Elder of St. Vincent and Barbados. He strengthens the foundation of the Church with a philosophy that says if you minister to the people, people will change the world.
