Impact Project: The Ripple Effect A collaboration with Alverno College - “Distilling Essence” and C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions Roxane Mayeur & Joel McElrone, Instructors - Community High School Angelo Vasta – Graphic Design Professional

The Impact Project is part of an ongoing collaboration with Alverno College’s “Distilling

Essence” program. In this project students illustrated how they envision creating a positive impact. In addition, each student created a tribute to an adult role model in the community that offered inspiration and support. Students worked along side graphic design professional Angelo Vasta to incorporate text and photographs in order to creatively express the essence of these individuals. The compilation serves as a reminder that our actions impact others and that a shared commitment to positive change creates a ripple effect that can transform the community and effect lasting change.

One of the people who has influenced me the most is Pam Kafka. Pam is one of those people who is always willing to talk to you no matter what kind of mood she is in. She has always been there for me when I need someone to just run to and talk to. She was the one who helped me when I was very unhappy with my life and wanted to end it and if not for her I might not be here today. She is always understanding of anything that a person could do. Though she “I think every child deserves a might not be happy second chance as long as they are about somethings that willing to try. Forgiveness is key.” I do she is always understanding. She tries to help me with my family problems and personal problems. Pam is one of the only people who I can tell everything to. No matter what I have to say Pam will listen. Pam is basically my second mother. Something she goes by is “No kid left behind.” By that she means no matter who the kid is they deserve a chance.

I’ve always been a good to my community since the fourth grade. I have been participating in community service to better the neighborhood. As I grew up, I wrote 3 grants to better Milwaukee and make people feel better. One of the grants I received was I got a cross walk so kids can feel safe going across a busy street, and I also wrote a grant to help the elderly and I am now writing a grant to fix an MPS elementary school.

For instance, she plans community cleanups, and she helps to educate the youth and our community on lifes ups and downs. She also keeps the kids occupied in our neighborhoods by organizing fieldtrips and assisting kids to find jobs. Jody has helped me get a job and also taken me around Wisconsin and Chicago and opened me up to new experiences.

I see myself sharing my knowledge and my skills to the community showing people how digital art is created and how I create my designs. Me personally I think digital art isn’t getting all the credit it deserves and I want to introduce that to people because there are not a lot of people who know about digital art and web designing and I want to bring both of those to light. In the future I would hope to make Digital Art and Web Designing more popular and keep people informed on how great it is. IMPACT - Page 6

The Person that influences me most right now is Angelo Vasta because he is an Italian web designer and gives back to his community by teaching us how to make websites and design our own template. He even knows how to work in Photoshop. He is also good at InDesign, Illustrator, and he is a master at flash and Dream Weaver. Another reason why he is an influence is because he understands digital art, He knows cyber creations in all of its forms.

I envision myself in a positive impact to my community by recycling instead of throwing away trash on the ground. Another thing, helping other people on the street, whether they have asked for help or not and seem to be in need of help. I’ll still help them, due to my good intentions. I see myself giving medicine to everyone, to the people on the street, to the people that come to get their medicine, and to people without medical care. I foresaw myself giving out medicine and giving care because when I’m all grown up I wanted to become a doctor. To see myself wearing a white long coat with my name tag when I’m impacting others. I can already imagine future of helping people and giving care to patients. It feels great and sad at the same time because sadness dwells upon you when you see your patients suffer, but great after giving care. I can see them get better and better. “When I’m a doctor I will have a great skill that will be needed for helping people from suffering”.

Someone that has impacted me in a positive way is Roxane. Roxane is my graphic design teacher. She has helped me a lot in this class, and I’m grateful. If it weren’t for her then this class would probably be hard for everyone. She teaches how to use Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity in this class which is very important for this class. Roxane impacted me by working, teaching, helping, and getting along with everyone. She gets along with everyone very well even with those people she doesn’t know or has just met. She works very hard by teaching everyone new things that they don’t know. She helps and tries to get along with others even if she had to spend her whole day helping them. Roxane gets along with everyone pretty well. She gets along with everyone by helping him or her solving their problems so they won’t have anything to worry about. I know that I’ll need this kind of skill when I’m a doctor.

Do I see myself as a positive impact on my community? I would say yes. I would say this because I am not out in my community starting trouble with any of my neighbors or community members that live on 41st street. One way I am a positive impact on my community is that I am not out fussing and fighting with the people in my community. Instead I am out talking and having a good time. I would also say I am a good impact because I am always helping the little ones out when they need it or buy them things. I also make the little kids pick up after each other when they throw stuff on the ground. This is why I would say I am a good impact on my community.

One person who has an impact on my community is a man named John. John is a World War 2 veteran. When he was younger he would come around and pick up trash from around homes and off of the streets. He likes the community to look clean and neat. He would also helps out people in the community by giving them odd jobs to do so that they can have some extra money in their pockets. That is why he is such an impact in our community. Page 13 - IMPACT

My personal impact In my community it is an urban environment, my family resides on the eastside of Milwaukee. Many homes are vacant and falling apart but we do have some positive influences such as people’s personalities and perseverance. My involvement in my community consists of my education that I am currently working on. I use my education to gain more knowledge and share it with my fellow neighbors or colleagues. Also, I impact people in the community when I engage in conversations that involve God or his religious guidance with people.

The person who influences my community and myself is Miss Ella Alston. She is a graduate from Custer high School and has been honored in her attendance and her effort with the sports she has played. This young lady was always interested in Nursing field, so as she grew older she found a job where she worked in that field. She also went back to school to get a higher degree to pursue the career she wanted to fulfill. Ella is a positive influence as a young Medical Assistant who strives to complete many of her goals. She also works hard in school and at her job. She still is in the process of working towards her degree so she can graduate. She is a courageous and a diligent young woman who leads others in many areas. She influences others around her diligent work ethic. She not only influences me, but I’m sure along the way many others will take after her success. I believe she influences me the most because I admire her ambition and drive that she has for school and for her job.

Charles J. May Impact I envision myself impacting my community positively by communicating more with those around it. Being more of a friend to those I know and help them in their time of need. Also, to be more patient with others no matter how irritating they may seem. I am a friendly person and what I am doing is showing others they can be friendly and different because there are not too many people willing to be patient. My greatest skill(s) that I have is that I’m a nice person. You have to be a nice person in order to be friendly, helpful, and patient.

He used to always give me the extra push I needed to pass his class and he was friendly too. I was able to talk to him like a peer as long as I got my work done. And whenever I needed help, he was always there to help me out, whether it is a personal problem, or help with my homework. He was patient with me when I would clown in class, ribbing people and such. That taught me to be patient even with those who may seem immature, and it taught me to become more mature myself. I impact my community positively by participating in community service every week. My community service is woodshop. In woodshop, a group of 9 people and I are working on building Adirondack Lawn Chairs. After we are done building the chairs, they will be sold. The money earned after we sell them will be used to help improve the shop. It feels good that all of my hard work will actually be put to good use and not just taken for granted.

I envision myself helping others and teaching them new things. I can be a big help in the community.I have a lot of skills and one of them is graphic design and others. People can learn a lot from me, they can feel like they can trust me and respect me. It’s important to help other people because they might not have the same skills I have and I’m doing good things that I didn’t know before. I’m glad I’m in this class with advanced students. There are some hard parts in the class and if you miss some days you can’t make it up. Well, you can but you going to behind.

The person that impacts me name is Brian. He works at the Lavarnway Boys and Girls Club on 15th and Center, I can’t say a lot about him and he is always telling me to finish school and make good choices. He’s a good influence. He tells every student or kid that has been through bad things and that had made mistakes that you can learn from them. Brian is a great teacher at the Boys and Girls Club. He works hard when it’s comes to business. The other staff tells Brian to slow down, the work that he does is he’s a life guard, pool staff and teacher.

This picture tells you how I play basketball at the Boys and Girls club. I started playing last year because that’s when I first started going to the club. Brian sometimes directs us about how to play and beat the other teams. I don’t play like that because I’ve been skipping practice, so he said I couldn’t play two games. Our team has been going on a winning stride since our last game in the picture above. The picture of the club is telling you how it looks and where it’s at. It’s a nice place to be when you don’t have anything to do, sometimes you can invite people to come to Lavarnway Boys and Girls Club.

The basketball team is extremely hard to beat because we always practing with each other. Brian always make us play against each other and we wear different jerseys. We have blue and red jerseys. Brian pays for them and our basketball shoes. I get along with my team mates. Sometimes there are tie games and we break them because Brian gets mad at us. So we play our best. Last game we had a score of 12 points and had 4/5 free throws.

PERSONAL IMPACT

Well I believe that impacting happens when something or someone comes into contact with something or someone else. It doesn’t have to be a big loud crash - an impact can be made quite softly and quietly and still be mighty effective. What counts is how appropriate it is to the situation. When it comes to individuals making an impact, personal impact, we think in terms of leaving something behind that wasn’t there before; changing someone else’s view, stimulating them, challenging or provoking them, inspiring or motivating them. Someone speaking to huge numbers of people who need to be motivated and inspired may need to use loads of energy and enthusiasm to get the message across. That same message given in a one-to-one situation may need

IMPACT - Vang-Lee Vue

to be delivered in a more measured, calmer style so the other person doesn’t feel overwhelmed. In both cases the ‘speaker’ is making a personal impact, but is choosing the impact that’s relevant to each occasion. When it comes to communication, first impressions, getting your message across and influencing others, the impact you make is crucial. You’ll make a personal impact no matter what, but it’s making the impact you want (rather than making one by accident) that’s important. If you’re in the business world, you’ve obviously impressed enough people with your skills and capabilities to get where you are: you are impactfull. Now may be the time to ensure you always come across to others the way you intend and with the most appropriate personal impact. IMPACT - Page 22

ommunity High School is what I consider a part of my community. My tribute would be to my Spanish teacher, Jason O’Brien. His skills to me can be quite amazing! He can be funny, straight-forward, and he can be just anything really. I’m influenced by him because of his spirit. He can be very sarcastic and very serious with what he says. It’s funny when you think about it. I also think that he helps the community by education. Education is really important and I think that everyone needs it.

I

never heard of Community High School until I was transferred. He “convinced” me, more like introduced me, to a school that I didn’t have much interest in. After being transferred, I can honestly say that I am happy to be where I am currently. Jason O’Brien deserves to be honored because I think that with his personality, he can get along with anyone. He can help anyone, and if not he can try. He should be honored because he is such a great teacher and it would be awesome to get to know him.

M

r. O’Brien said, “Some people think that the

school is only as good as the community it is in.”But “Did good schools create the community or did the community create good schools?”

“Improving the community through education not with just worksheets, but to also get along, wanting to learn.”

I

am currently attending Community High School and after graduating from here I want to attend college. As of my career in the future, I want to become a computer technician or a DJ. Thinking about these careers, I would help the community members who love music and computers. To help out the community, I have the up-for-it spirit to support and help others. My skills to help the community can be well served. I can always try my best in what I am told to do.

I

think it’s important to help others because in my opinion, everyone loves to be helped. It gives that person, even myself, the feeling of having someone help you just from the kindness of their hearts. Also, while serving the communities around us, I like to take it as getting more experience and learning new things.

One way I am impacting the community is by joining our school’s first Botany class. Botany class is taught by teachers Joel McElrone and Amanda Nickel on Saturdays starting from 9:00 a.m. until noon. We are currently growing our own plants and are raising some fish. In the future, we plan to get a community garden started, which will contain herbs, vegetables and flowers. We also want to raise a range of animals such as snakes, turtles and other fish types. Once the garden is stable, we also want to go out and teach children in elementary schools about raising their own pets.

Joel McElrone works at Community High school. He teaches wood shop/ sculpture class. On Saturdays, he teaches Botany class. Joel teaches the students in Botany about animal care. He is helping them raise a couple of fish and eventually wants to get snakes, turtles, frogs and even get a salt water tank started. He is also teaching us what kind of environment certain animals live in. He is hard-working, trustworthy and humorous. Interview Questions for Joel: 1.) Is there any future plans you want to accomplish in Botany? - I want to get a green house started and a water garden started with lilies in it. I also want more animals involved. I also want the program expanded and more students involved. 2.) Why did you start Botany class? - I started Botany class for the love of the children and for the love of Botany. I also did because you guys were interested in starting one and it gives students more knowledge. 3.) How far do you think Botany class will go? - Botany class should be continuous, forever, until I die.

Amanda Nickel is also a teacher at Community High school. She teaches Biology class and Anatomy and Physiology. In Botany class, we teaches us about plant growth and how to take good care of plants. She is helping us grow a variety of plants such as tomatoes, lavender, bean plants and sweet pea plants. In the future, she wants to get a community garden started. Amanda is motivated, very educated and serves as a positive role model to others. Interview Questions for Amanda: 1.) Why did you start Botany class? - I started it because it is not covered in any of our science classes and I feel that it is going to be a great community project. 2.) What other plants would you like to see grown in Botany? - I want to grow some neat plants, like plants you find in rain forests, some of Wisconsin’s native plants and maybe have a Japaneses garden. 3.) Are there any future plans for Botany class? - I really want to get the garden started. I also want to get the garden to a reasonable size so we can harvest it and maybe even run our own farmer’s market. We can also donate the food we grow.

I was influence because I like crafting and making artwork and I like the work I make because it’s a bit different from other people. Last year there was a whole group of people who made an alligator and we finished it and it took a long time. Joel have also influence me in plants and animals too in Botany we take care of animals and plants and we are going to make a garden. I am influenced because I have a plant and my plant is actually growing.

I am impacting my own community because I am helping with a community garden. The community garden is going to make the community more appealing. I am also in a saturday class called botany and we have a group of people that are trying to start the gardens. We will give out free samples of the seeds to the community so they could plant their own seeds at their house. We’ll help them plant the seeds also if they need help trying to plant the seeds. The gardens that we are going have is veggie garden, flower garden and the herb garden and I think we are going to have a pond too. Each garden everything is going to separated too and we are going to have the plants label too. The great thing about the garden is it’s going to count as community service hours and its going to be in the summer too.
