Volteggiando alte sopra un paesaggio eterno, nel cuore di una città di pietra scura, le immagini de Le Avventure del Barone di Munchausen si dimenano su uno schermo gigante che torreggia su una piazzetta illuminata dalla luna. Mentre i bambini giocano, le persone sedute ai tavolini sistemate come se fosse un cinema all’aperto, mangiano, conversano e guardano catturate dal film. Altri preferiscono fuggire cercando salvezza nel bar locale. Ma non c’è modo di fuggire. Una luce brilla da dietro il bar e getta le ombre dei bevitori attraverso la piazza sullo schermo. Lì si mescolano con i personaggi del mio film, in una danza reale e fantastica allo stesso tempo, che rimane per sempre impressa nella mia memoria. L’Umbria Film Festival di Montone può far suscitare questo tipo di emozioni. È un evento magico. Sono orgoglioso di farne parte.

Floating high above an eternal landscape, in the heart of a dark stone town, images from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen tumble across a giant screen which towers over a small moonlite square. While children play, people sitting at tables or chairs arranged as an affresco cinema, eat, talk, watch - captured by the film. Others prefer to escape - to the safety of the local café. But there is no escape. A light shines from behind the bar. It hurls the shadows of the drinkers back across the square and onto the screen. There they blend with the characters of my film in a dance of reality and fantasy that remains forever imprinted on my memory. The Montone Umbria Film Festival can do things like that to you. Un ringraziamento particolare a tutti i membri dell’associazione Umbria Film Festival. Un sentito grazie alle istituzioni che sostengono e supportano il festival, così come a tutti coloro che direttamente e o indirettamente ne permettono la realizzazione. “Il modo migliore di guardare un film é quello di renderlo un’esperienza intima”, Montone, la sua piazza i suoi colori i suoi profumi fanno si che il “sogno” del cinema possa prendere vita, in un set naturale dove narrare e vivere attraverso la fantasia, storie e stati d’animo.

Ours, it’s a festival characterized by the quality of the works presented, expression of excellence, not only for our community but for the whole region and the entire country. Here are the names of just some artists who honor and honored us with their presence. VANESSA STRIZZI Direttore Artistico / Artistic Director La diversità è il tema di questa 20esima edizione. Diverse e anticonformiste sono le due protagoniste di Burn Burn Burn di Chanya Button che intraprendono un viaggio in giro per la Gran Bretagna per spargere le ceneri del loro amico Dan. Diversi sono i tre adolescenti di From Nowhere di Matthew Newton. Loro vogliono a tutti costi essere normali, ma le loro storie, il loro essere in nessun luogo non glielo permette. E ancora il bel film di Tom Hooper, The Danish Girl, racconta la diversità di un uomo che vuole essere una donna, ma la diversità è anche quella di sua moglie che lo aiuta in questo percorso agli inizi del 900. Diversi sono anche i due fratelli protagonisti della commedia danese di Anders Thomas Jensen, Mænd & Hons che cercano di capire chi sono i loro veri genitori e intraprendono un cammino doloroso che li porterà ad una scoperta inquietante. E infine Gaybe Baby, il bellissimo documentario di Maya Newell su quattro bambini che hanno genitori omosessuali. La loro diversità non esiste, è una normalità che appartiene ad ogni famiglia. Siamo onoratissimi di avere come ospiti tre grandi artisti internazionali. Il regista inglese Tom Hooper, oscar per Il discorso del re, Rachel Portman, prima donna ad aver preso un oscar per una colonna sonora e infine Ghita Nørbi, la regina indiscussa del cinema danese. Tutti e tre riceveranno le chiavi della città. Torna a trovarci anche la grande regista e amica Lone Scherfig, che ha preparato un omaggio a Rachel Portman. Il programma prevede come di consueto il concorso di corti per bambini, con la migliore produzione corta mondiale riservata all’infanzia e adolescenza; la competizione degli UMBRIAMETRAGGI, con la migliore produzione umbra dell’anno e due tavole rotonde, una su i migranti e una sulle Film Commission. A incorniciare il programma, la bella mostra di Rebecca Heyl: Memory Lane, allestita per le vie del paese, ci riporta alla memoria una parte degli ospiti che sono venuti a Montone. Infine i ringraziamenti a tutti quelli che hanno contribuito quest’anno e anche a tutte le edizioni precedenti al festival. Marisa Berna per pungolare noi tutti ogni anno a fare meglio e di più. Ma anche per avere il coraggio di portare avanti il festival e di saper prendere delle decisioni importanti. Rachele Antonini, che coordinando con molta professionalità le traduzioni fatte dagli studenti del Master in Screen Translation dell’Università di Bologna in Forlì, mi ha permesso di andare a cercare gemme nascoste in giro per il mondo sapendo che sarebbero state fruibili anche per chi non parlava la lingua nella quali erano stati girati. Terry Gilliam, il nostro presidente onorario, che con la sua generosità, il suo entusiasmo ci ha sostenuto negli anni insieme a sua moglie Maggy Gilliam. Lone Scherfig che continua a pensare che siamo un festival speciale. Chiara Montagnini che si è buttata con immensa passione sul

nostro progetto. Eve Mongin, un grande aiuto e una grande sostenitrice del festival. Francesca Antonini che si occupa insieme a Giulio Olmetti, del sito e dei social network. Francesca Meocci, che porta avanti con estrema professionalità la sezione degli Umbriametraggi. Rebecca Heyl che con le sue foto immortala ogni edizione del festival. Ann Clarke con le sue traduzioni eccezionali. Luca Rossi e l’equipe TVM che curano le proiezioni. Il maestro Rolando Tironzelli e la sua banda per il concerto di chiusura del festival. Walter Guarini, Tina Lepri, Sandro Vestrelli e Stefano Bianchini per il loro impegno assoluto. Lizette Gram Mygind che ha con noi un filo rosso. E soprattutto il sindaco Mirco Rinaldi che tanto crede nel festival e con lui tutti gli abitanti di Montone e gli ospiti che ci hanno fatto grandi. Grazie! Anche tutti noi come il tema di quest’anno ci sentiamo DIVERSI! Diversity is the overall theme of this year’s edition. Being different and anti conformist are the main characteristics that define the two protagonists of the film “Burn Burn Burn” by Chanya Button, in which the two protagonists embark on a journey to the Great Britain where they intend on spreading the ashes of their friend, Dan. The three teenagers in “From Nowhere” by Matthew Newton can also be described as being different. No matter how much they wish to be normal, their stories and who they are keep them from being normal wherever they go. The idea of being different is further discussed in “The Danish Girl”, the latest film by Tom Hooper, which tells the story, both of a man who wishes to be a woman and his wife who never stops supporting him in his transformation during the 1900s. We see even more diversity in the protagonists of the Danish Comedy, “Mænd & Hons” by Anders Thomas Jensen, the two brothers who set out on a painful walk to try and figure out who their real parents are, which, in the end, leads them to discovering the ugly truth. Finally, the recurring theme is yet again explored in “Gaybe Baby”, a beautiful documentary about four children who have homosexual parents, filmed by Maya Newell. What may be seen as being different is really what we see in any ordinary family. This year, we are truly honored to have three internationally renowned artists come join us as our guests: Tom Hooper, the British film director who has won the Oscar for “The King’s Speech”, Rachel Portman, the prima donna in winning an Oscar for film soundtracks, and last but not least, Ghita Nørbi, the absolute queen of Danish cinema. Each and every one of them will receive a “Key of the City”. Moreover, Lone Scherfig, another renowned film director and our friend, will be coming to join us, yet again, and has prepared a present for Rachel Portman. This year’s program will be as any other year; there will be a competi-

tive section for Shorts for Children, with the year’s best production in the world left up to the young and the children to choose, another competitive section for the Umbriametraggi where the year’s film productions made in Umbria will be contended for the best film, and we will be holding two workshops as well, one on the topic of immigrants and another on film commissions. To compliment the Festival, there will also be Rebecca Heyl’s photo exhibition called the “Memory Lane”. Her photographs, which recall memories of the guests who have joined us at the Festival’s previous editions, will be displayed along the main roads of Montone. Lastly, I would like to thank all those who have somehow helped make this year’s and the previous years’ Umbria Film Festival take place. A special thanks to Marisa Berna, not only for pushing us do better than our best each and every year, but also for knowing how to make the important decisions and for playing a key role in organizing the Festival. Thank you Rachele Antonini for all of your help. I am utterly stupefied for how you supervised all of the translations done by students of University of Bologna in Forlì studying Masters program in Screen Translation, with so much professionalism as well. Thanks to you and your students’ work, I was not worried to go looking for hidden gems in every part of the world, for I knew that language barrier was not going to be our problem in understanding the films. I would like to extend my gratitude to Terry Gilliam, our honorary president, and his wife Maggy Gilliam, who have always supported the Umbria Film Festival with infinite generosity and enthusiasm. RACHEL PORTMAN British composer Rachel Portman became the first female composer to win an Academy Award, which she received for the score of EMMA. She was also the first female composer to win a Primetime Emmy Award, which she received for the film, BESSIE. Three undocumented teenagers -- a Dominican girl, an African boy and a Peruvian girl -- are just about to graduate high school in the Bronx. Like most teenagers, all they want to do is hang with their friends, fall in love, and figure out where to go to college, but unlike their American classmates, these three live with the threat of being discovered by the authorities. When one of their teachers connects them with a lawyer to help them get their papers, the teens start to dig into their family histories to assist their immigration cases. As they continue to deal with the everyday problems of adolescence, the teenagers are forced to confront their past and, at the same time, fight for their future.

A 18 anni ha scritto, diretto e prodotto il cortometraggio dal titolo PAINTED FACES, che è stato presentato al London Film Festival, è uscito al cinema e poi è stato trasmesso da Channel 4. All’Università di Oxford ha diretto alcune produzioni teatrali in cui recitavano Kate Beckinsale e Emily Mortimer, ed ha diretto i suoi primi spot pubblicitari televisivi. Il primo film di Tom Hooper, RUNAWAY DOG, è stato realizzato quando aveva 13 anni, con una telecamera Clockwork 16 mm Bolex, utilizzando 30 metri e mezzo di pellicola. THE DANISH GIRL Copenaghen, 1926. Einar Wegener, sposato con Gerda Wegener, è un apprezzato pittore paesaggista. Anche Gerda è un’artista, ma meno nota. Tutto comincia a cambiare il giorno in cui, per completare un ritratto, Gerda chiede a suo marito di posare con un abito femminile. Quest’esperienza è illuminante, perché Einar si rende conto che negli abiti di Lili emerge una nuova consapevolezza, l’espressione del suo vero sé, e comincia a vivere la sua vita di donna. Everything changes the day that Gerde asks her husband to pose in a woman’s dress allowing her to finish a portrait. This experience is life-changing as Einar realizes that dressed in the clothes of a woman he calls Lili he can truly express his nature for the first time. The painting is highly acclaimed, while Einar, after his revelation, gradually transforms himself into a real woman, Lili Elbe. Gerda unexpectedly discovers that she has a new inspiring muse and a renewed creative fire. Harshly met by the society’s disapproval, the couple decides to leave Denmark for a more open-minded Paris where Gerda’s career prospers. While the couple continues to prosper in marriage and Gerda provides Lili with all kinds of support necessary during his transformation phase into a transgender woman, moments of tension are inevitable. Nevertheless, the couple helps each other find the courage to be whoever they wish to be.

È considerata la regina dello schermo e del palco Danese. La carriera di Ghita Nørby abbraccia 60 anni di lavoro in generi diversi. Ha recitato qualsiasi ruolo, dalla contadinella alla machiavellica matrigna. Eppure, forse, la sua migliore performance è stata nel ruolo di una spiritata casalinga di mezza età in WALTZING REGITZE (1989), girato da Kaspar Rostrup. Unrivaled as the grande dame of Danish stage and screen, Ghita Nørby’s career spans almost 60 years in multiple genres. She has played everything from country sweetheart to Machiavellian mother-in-law. Yet, perhaps, Nørby’s most memorable role is that of a spirited, middle-aged housewife in WALTZING REGITZE (1989), directed by Kaspar Rostrup. Cast against character in Lars von Trier’s absurdly comic TV series THE KINGDOM (1994 and 1997), she showed her comedic talent as a bitchy doctor. SILENT HEART brings Bille August and Ghita Nørby together for the first time in 25 years. The last time Nørby appeared in an August film was in the Palme d’Or-winning THE BEST INTENTIONS from 1992 in which she played Ingmar Bergman’s grandmother. In macchina Marja ha un improvviso attacco di panico: ha spento il gas? Ha lasciato l’acqua aperta? La finestra è chiusa a chiave? Nella sua mente i suoi errori immaginari crescono fino a raggiungere proporzioni inimmaginabili.

Un ragazzino non riesce a prendere sonno. Chiama il padre, che sta al piano di sotto in salotto a leggere il giornale, che per evitare di leggergli un’altra storia, gli dice di provare a contare le pecore. Il bambino fa come gli viene detto, ma ben presto si ritrova con una dozzina di pecore intorno al suo letto.

In the car Marja has a sudden rush of panic: did she turn off the gas? Did she leave the water running? Is the window locked? In her mind her imaginary mistakes grow to absurd proportions.

DOM/SUN La Società Filarmonica BRACCIO FORTEBRACCIO nasce a Montone, piccolo paese medievale in provincia di Perugia, intorno al 1850 per merito di alcuni cittadini appassionati per la musica. Da allora non ha mai interrotto l’attività, tranne nei periodi bellici. Ha sottolineato con la sua presenza i momenti di vita più importanti per la comunità montonese con servizi e concerti. Ne hanno fatto parte come musicanti oltre trecento persone. Attualmente è formata da circa quaranta elementi e dal 1973 è diretta dal maestro Rolando Tironzelli. The Società Filarmonica BRACCIO FORTEBRACCIO was founded around 1850 in Montone, a small medieval village in the province of Perugia, thanks to a group of citizens with a passion for music. Since then it has never ceased its activity, except in times of war. The sound of the band has touched the hearts of many in Montone, visited at its countless number of concerts. More than three hundred musicians have been members of the band. Currently the band is made up of about forty members and Maestro Rolando Tironzelli conducts it since 1973.

Che cosa è una fotografia? È una testimonianza. Un fermo immagine di un momento che poi passa e finisce. È un fissare il tempo per un attimo. È imprimere un istante per sempre. È renderlo immortale e tangibile. Ecco, le fotografie di Rebecca Heyl del Festival sono proprio tutto questo. Le sue fotografie ci permettono di rivedere i tanti artisti che sono venuti all’UFF. Sorridenti, felici con le chiavi in mano, contenti dell’accoglienza che hanno avuto. Emozionati! A partire da Terry Gilliam, la nostra prima chiave, che saluta un “Braccio” in costume. Ogni ospite nelle foto ostenta un po’ il suo carattere e la sua provenienza. Peter Mullan che ci onora con il kilt. Mike Leigh che mostra orgoglioso la chiave davanti al suo occhio indagatore. Oppure Lone Scherfig, in tutta la sua eleganza, è estasiata dell’atmosfera che la circonda. Ralph Fiennes che sfoggia la chiave come fosse un trofeo. O Colin Firth che la tiene al petto mentre il sindaco lo ringrazia per essere venuto. Ancora Peter Lord che la esibisce fiero accanto al poster dell’edizione. Infine Bahman Ghobadi che ne va orgolioso per le strade del paese. Ma dove sono gli anni mancanti? Di quelli non abbiamo memoria perché mancano le foto o perché se ne è persa traccia. Allora questa mostra è proprio l’occasione per rivedere ed emozionarsi davanti a tanti talenti che sono venuti al festival, che sono passati a Montone. Rebecca Heyl è un’artista che ci segue da 20 anni. Il suo talento è al servizio dell’UFF in modo discreto e delicato. Rebecca, che come mi disse una volta, ha trovato l’AMERICA in Italia. Rebecca, senza le tue fotografie, si sarebbe persa la memoria del Festival, e di conseguenza il Festival stesso… per favore, continua a raccontarci per altri 20 anni…

Umbria Film Festival Memory Lane What is a photograph? It’s a testimony. A still image of a moment in time. Just an instant that lasts for all time, engraved forever on our memory. Rebecca Heyl’s photographs of the Festival encapsulate all of this. They help us to have another look at all the artists who have been to the UFF. Smiling, happy, holding the Keys in their hands, delighted with the welcome they have received. Initially Terry Gilliam, our first Key, greeting a “Braccio” in full costume. All the guests in the photographs reveal a little of their character and their origins. Peter Mullan who honours us with his kilt. Mike Leigh who proudly holds the Key in front of his inquiring eyes. The elegant Lone Scherfig enchanted by the atmosphere surrounding her. Ralph Fiennes who holds up the Key as if it were a trophy. Colin Firth who holds it to his chest while the Mayor thanks him for coming. Peter Lord who proudly shows it next to the Festival poster. Finally Bahman Ghbadi who walks proudly along the streets of the town. Unfortunately some years are missing because there are no photographs or they have been lost in time. They are deeply in our memory but the vision for all to share is not present. But let us enjoy the photographs we have. This exhibition is the perfect occasion to look back and feel the excitement of having had so many talented guests at the Festival and in Montone. Rebecca Heyl is an artist who has been following us for twenty years. She has given her time and talent to the Festival in a discreet and delicate way and, as she once told me, she has found AMERICA in Italy. Rebecca, without your photographs we could not share with others our memory of the Festival and consequently the Festival itself. Please continue to tell our story for another twenty years.

SECONDE GENERAZIONI ISLAMICHE TRA APPARTENENZA E RISCHIO DI DERIVE FONDAMENTALISTE SECOND-GENERATION MUSLIM IMMIGRANTS CAUGHT BETWEEN BELONGING IN THEIR ADOPTED LAND AND THE RISK OF ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALIST ATTRACTION

PROGRAMMA / PROGRAMME

Le “seconde generazioni islamiche” affrontano un costante conflitto frutto dello scontro tra cultura italiana e cultura (mediata) del paese di origine dei genitori: sono culturalmente ibridati, ma molto spesso non hanno risolto positivamente il conflitto identitario che deriva dal vivere in una società non interculturale. Anche perché percepiscono chiaramente che il gap che permane tra le loro opportunità e quelle dei figli dei nativi italiani è il più rilevante elemento di ingiustizia che si trovano ad affrontare, sia nella scuola che nel mondo del lavoro. Infine, alcune istituzioni si sono dimostrate incapaci di promuovere la partecipazione paritaria dei nuovi cittadini e, anzi, continuano a inserire nell’agenda politica temi ostili all’integrazione e a promuovere il razzismo e la xenofobia: la questione della rappresentanza degli interessi dei nuovi cittadini è destinata a irrompere nella scena pubblica al crescere nel numero delle giovani “seconde generazioni” che raggiungono il diritto di voto. Non a caso queste differenze hanno determinato che tutti i recenti conflitti sociali legati all’immigrazione (cui si possono aggiungere i più feroci e criminali atti di terrorismo) avvenuti in Francia, Svezia, Inghilterra e Belgio hanno sempre avuto come protagonisti cittadini di seconda generazione. L’inclusione sociale e le pari opportunità (soprattutto nel mondo di lavoro) delle seconde generazioni sono le sfide cruciali della futura sostenibilità della nuova società multietnica e multiculturale. In Umbria è stato dato un concreto segnale in tale direzione con l’approvazione della legge regionale n.1 del 1 febbraio 2016, Norme in materia di politiche giovanili, con la quale è stato esteso ai sedicenni e agli stranieri il diritto di voto ai referendum consultivi regionali, nonché il diritto di promuovere petizioni e di prendere parte alle consultazioni.

The second-generation Muslims face a constant identity conflict that derives from the clash between Italian culture and the culture (mediated) of the parents’ country of origin. They are culturally hybridized, but very often they haven’t resolved the identity conflict in a positive way, due to living in a society that is not intercultural. This is also the consequence of their perception of the gap, which remains between their opportunities and those of the children of native Italians. It is the most relevant element of injustice they have to face, both at school and in the workplace. In addition, some institutions have shown that they are unable to promote the equal participation of new citizens and indeed continue to include in their political agenda themes that are hostile to integration, thus promoting racism and xenophobia. The question of the representation of the interests of new citizens is bound to break out into the public arena as the numbers of the young ‘second-generation’ increase and acquire the right to vote. It is not by chance that these differences have determined all social conflicts linked to immigration today (to which can be added the most ferocious and criminal acts of terrorism) that have taken place in France, Sweden, England and Belgium and whose protagonists are second-generation citizens. Social inclusion, employability and equal opportunity for the second generation are the crucial challenges of the sustainable future of the new multiethnic and multicultural society. In Umbria, an active movement towards promoting such ideals has been seen in the approval of the regional statute of 1st February, 2016, a legislation regarding youth policy, which has extended to sixteen-year-olds and foreigners the right to petition and to take part in consultations.

La sezione Umbriametraggi, nata nel 2007 come evento sperimentale, dopo dieci anni (e dopo oltre 100 cortometraggi) è diventata una presenza consueta e attesa nella programmazione dell’Umbria Film Festival. La sezione, in particolare, propone una selezione di cortometraggi di filmmaker umbri, scelti attraverso uno specifico concorso. Una giuria formata da soci dell’associazione Umbria Film Festival ha selezionato quest’anno, tra tutti quelli inviati, otto corti che avranno la possibilità di essere premiati. Le storie, gli stili, le prospettive e i generi diversi che animano gli Umbriametraggi offrono al pubblico un ulteriore punto di vista sulle vie e sulle sperimentazioni del cinema indipendente. Esperti, appassionati e curiosi possono così trovare nel borgo umbro, tra il teatro e la piazza, tra i vicoli e gli scorci panoramici, un luogo d’elezione per nuovi spunti, incontri, scambi e contaminazioni.

The Umbriametraggi section, created in 2007 as an experimental event, has become after ten years (and after 100 short movies) a familiar and much-awaited event in the programme of Umbria Film Festival. The section, in particular, presents a selection of short films by Umbrian filmmakers, chosen through a specific competition. This year, a jury formed by members of the Umbria Film Festival has selected, among several entries, eight short films that will have the chance to be rewarded. The different stories, styles, perspectives and genres presented at Umbriametraggi will offer the audience a further point of view on the trends and experimentations of independent filmmaking. Experts, enthusiasts and curious will find in the Umbrian village, between the theater and the piazza, among the narrow streets and panoramic views, a place of choice for new ideas, meetings, exchanges and interactions.

Ne trova molti, ma nessuno che vada bene, fino a quando, una sera qualsiasi, alza lo sguardo al cielo e trova ciò che sta cercando. An old sound recordist has spent his whole life recording sounds of all types. However, for many years he has been trying to find the last sound to complete his collection. He has found a lot but they are not exactly what he wants, until one evening, he looks up at the sky and finds what he’s been looking for.

This tells the story of migration to and from Italy – from Umbria to France in the 50s, from Albania and the Maghreb to Umbria in the 90s, and the present story of thousands of refugees at European borders escaping war and poverty .

SONDERKOMMANDO Nicola Ragone, Giuliano Braga - 2015, 18’ Un treno, un viaggio, una meta che attende inesorabile. Due sconosciuti incrociano i loro sguardi. Giunti alla meta la situazione separa i loro destini: il più robusto viene scelto per diventare “bracciante della morte” in un lager nazista, un Sonderkommando. A train, a journey, a final destination, two strangers exchange glances. On arrival their paths separate. The stronger one is chosen to be a ‘labourer of death’ in a Nazi concentration camp, a Sonderkommando.

Le sue due passioni, il disegno e la musica, lo aiutano a esprimere ed equilibrare la sua vena artistica nella vita di tutti i giorni. Reno ha creato, con Flavie Darchen, la propria società indipendente: TIGOBO STUDIOS. Grazie ai TIGOBO STUDIOS, Reno può sviluppare i suoi progetti di animazione tra cui lungometraggi, cortometraggi e serie TV. Reno ha creato una propria scuola: Tigobo SCHOOL PRO, un progetto che vede più conforme al suo essere, ed insegna animazione con “passione”. Born in Marseille, Reno Armanet is a director, animator, music composer and well rounded artist in visual development. His two passions, drawing and music, help him express and balance this artist in everyday life. Reno has created his own independent company with Flavie Darchen: TIGOBO STUDIOS. With TIGOBO STUDIOS, Reno develops his own animation projects including features, short films and TV series. Reno created his own school: TIGOBO SCHOOL PRO, a project he sees more fitting with his ways, teaching animation with “passion”.

ÖRS BÁRCZY Örs Bárczy sta finendo il master presso l’Università di Bournemouth. E’ un artista 3D altamente motivato sempre desideroso di imparare, di estendere le sue conoscenze, ama il lavoro di squadra e i dettagli finali della produzione. Örs Bárczy is finishing his master’s degree at Bournemouth University. He is a highly motivated 3d artist who is always eager to learn, extend his knowledge, work in a team and passionate about the very final details of each production.

HANNE BERKAAK Hanne Berkaak è un illustratrice e animatrice freelance che attualmente vive ad Oslo, in Norvegia. Ha un Master in Comunicazione Arte e Design presso il Royal College of Art di Londra e una laurea in animazione presso la scuola di Parson of Design, New York. Berkaak ha diretto animazioni per clienti come Playstation, Channel 4, Yo Gabba

Gabba e Save The Children. Per il suo cortometraggio di debutto, IL DIARIO DELLA MARATONA è stata ispirata dai paesaggi e dai ricordi delle sue estati di infanzia. Hanne Berkaak is a freelance illustrator and animator currently based in Oslo, Norway. She has a Master in Communication Art & Design from Royal College of Art, London and a BA in animation from Parson’s School of Design, New York. Berkaak has directed animations for clients such as Playstation, Channel 4, Yo Gabba Gabba and Save The Children. With her short film debut, THE MARATHON DIARY, she has been inspired by the landscapes and memories of her childhood summers.

NICOLAS BIANCO-LEVRIN & JULIE REMBAUVILLE Nicolas Bianco-Levrin e Julie Rembauville sono registi di animazione e autori di libri per bambini e lavorano insieme costantemente dal 2003. Hanno co-diretto circa 20 cortometraggi utilizzando varie tecniche. Tra i loro corti vi sono BAPTISTIN L’IMBATTIBILE (2006), AILLEURS (2008), [R] (2010) e BEN HORA (2010) Attualmente stanno sviluppando un nuovo film basato su Kroak la collana di libri di Bianco-Levrin. LA VITA DI UN CANE è stata la prima collaborazione del duo con il NFB, ed è stato co-prodotto con Folimage dopo aver vinto il premio cortometraggio SACD all’ Annecy International Animation Festival del 2010. Hanno vinto nuovamente il premio nel 2015 per il loro cortometraggio COLUI CHE DOMAVA LE NUVOLE. Nicolas Bianco-Levrin and Julie Rembauville are prolific animation filmmakers and children’s book authors who have worked together regularly since 2003. They have co-directed about 20 short films using various techniques. These include BAPTISTIN L’IMBATTABLE (2006), AILLEURS (2008), [R] (2010) and BEN HORA (2010. They are currently developing a new film based on Bianco-Levrin’s book series Kroak. IT’S A DOG’S LIFE was the duo’s first collaboration with the NFB, and was co-produced with Folimage after winning the SACD short film project award at the 2010 Annecy International Animation Festival. They win this award again in 2015 for their project THE ONE WHO TAMED CLOUDS.

STEPHAN BOOKAS Stephan Bookas è un regista, produttore e direttore della fotografia tedesco /americano, che vive a Londra. Ha girato e diretto premiati documentari e cortometraggi in giro per il mondo. E’ attualmente in post-produzione per il suo primo lungometraggio documentario e in pre-produzione per numerosi progetti cinematografici, d’animazione e documentari internazionali. Stephan Bookas is a German/American, London based filmmaker, producer and cinematographer. He has shot and directed award winning documentaries and short fiction films across much of the globe. He is currently in postproduction for his first feature-length documentary and in preproduction for multiple international fiction, animation and documentary projects.

STEVE BOOT Steve Boot è, con i suoi oltre 15 anni di esperienza, un animatore professionista dello stop-motion. Ha ricevuto un’istruzione “casalinga” al Cosgrove Hall Films con un corso di formazione intensivo gestito dalla leggenda dell’animazione Barry Purves. Lavora principalmente su serie televisive per bambini, ma ama produrre propri film indipendenti quando ne ha la possibilità. Attualmente sta lavorando presso gli studi di fama mondiale Mackinnon e Saunders. Steve Boot is a professional stop-motion animator with over 15 years of experience. He was taught in house at Cosgrove Hall Films on an intensive training course run by animation legend Barry Purves. He mainly works on children’s TV series, but likes to make his own independent films whenever he gets the chance. He is currently enjoying working at the world class Mackinnon and Saunders studios.

CHANYA BUTTON Chanya Button ha iniziato a lavorare, mentre ancora studiava, come assistente alla regia per grandi lungometraggi e a 18 anni ha vinto un posto all’interno del programma Giovani Scrittori della Corte Reale prima di andare a studiare letteratura inglese a Oxford. Successivamente ha ottenuto un Master of Arts in regia teatrale

presso la RADA. Da allora Chanya ha lavorato a lungo sia per il teatro che per il cinema, unendo il lavoro personale a lavori su prestigiosi progetti. Ha lavorato per il dipartimento creativo della Warner Brothers a Los Angeles, per lo UK Film Council (ora BFI) Film Fund, come aiuto regista per il Bush Theatre e il Cinema Trycicle, e nel reparto sviluppo per Heyday Films, oltre a continuare il suo lavoro su lungometraggi tra cui le serie di HARRY POTTER, SHERLOCK HOLMES e L’ALBA DI DOMANI. Attraverso la sua società di produzione, Gobby e Specs, ha prodotto, coscritto e diretto tre cortometraggi. She has worked at the Creative Department at Warner Brothers in LA, for the UK Film Council (now BFI) Film Fund, as an Assistant Director for the Bush Theatre, the Tricycle Theatre, in Development for Heyday Films, as well as continuing her work on Studio features including the HARRY POTTER franchise, SHERLOCK HOLMES and EDGE OF TOMORROW. Through her production company, Gobby and Specs, she has Produced, Co- Written,and Directed three shorts. In 2012, her work was chosen for the DGA/Shoot Magazine New Director’s Showcase in NYC and FIRE, commissioned by Film London, played at BFI London Film Festival and Tiff before touring with the British Council. Her latest short, ALPHA: OMEGA was commissioned by Pinewood Studios, with whom she is currently developing a feature version.

JAMES CUNNINGHAM È nato nel 1973, è un regista e animatore Neozelandese. Ha una laurea

in fotografia e un Master in animazione digitale presso la Elam School of Fine Arts di Auckland. Ha diretto dieci cortometraggi pluripremiati. James è un Senior Lecturer presso la Media Design School, la miglior scuola di animazione ed effetti visivi della Nuova Zelanda, dove produce e dirige cortometraggi insieme ai suoi studenti. Prima è stato a capo del reparto 3D presso la Digital Post dove ha lavorato sugli effetti visivi per spot televisivi locali e internazionali, ed è stato direttore tecnico de IL SIGNORE DEGLI ANELLI per la Weta Digital. James Cunningham (born 1973) is a New Zealand film director and animator. He has directed ten award winning short films. James is a Senior Lecturer at Media Design School, the premier Animation and Visual Effects new media school in New Zealand, where he produces and directs short films with his students. Prior to that he was Head of 3D at Digital Post working on Visual Effects for local and international TV Commercials, and he was a technical director on THE LORD OF THE RINGS at Weta Digital. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and a Master of Fine Arts in digital animation from Elam School of Fine Arts.

TRISTAN DAWS Tristan Daws è un regista di documentari con sede a Londra. Il suo lavoro si concentra spesso sugli emarginati sociali, in particolare dal punto di vista della sanità mentale. Tristan Daws is a London-based, documentary filmmaker. His work has often focused on the marginalised in society, particularly in the field of mental health. VICTOR HAEGELIN Dopo aver studiato presso la Famu, la scuola di cinema di Praga, Victor Haegelin ha realizzato filmati di animazione e stop motion. Ha iniziato un’esperienza di lavoro presso Partizan a Parigi nel 2007. Qui ha creato affascinanti animazioni stop-frame per importanti marchi. Inoltre ha lavorato come animatore insieme a Phil Andelman, Olivier Gondry, Raffaele Frydman, Michel Gondry e Eric Lynne. After studying in cinema school at Prague, FAMU, Victor Haegelin became autodidact in animation movie making and stop motion. He started at Partizan doing work experience in the Paris office in 2007. He has made charming stop frame animation for important brands. He also worked as an animator with Phil Andelman, Olivier Gondry, Raphael Frydman, Michel Gondry and Eric Lynne.

OLIVER HILBERT Oliver Hilbert (1980) è un artista di effetti visivi Neozelandese. Ha prodotto e supervisionato numerosi cortometraggi e video musicali. Oliver è docente presso la Media Design School, la miglior scuola di animazione ed effetti visivi della Nuova Zelanda, dove produce, supervisiona e dirige cortometraggi insieme ai suoi studenti. In precedenza ha lavorato come artista cinematografico per il gioco Giant - Midway Games. Oliver Hilbert (1980) is a New Zealand 3D and Visual Effect Artist. He has produced and supervised on numerous winning short films and music videos. Oliver is a Lecturer at Media Design School, the premier Animation and Visual Effects School in New Zealand, where he produces, supervises and directs short films with his students. Prior

ANDERS THOMAS JENSEN Anders Thomas Jensen è uno sceneggiatore e regista. Ha vinto un Oscar nel 1999 per il suo cortometraggio di fantascienza ELECTION NIGHT e da allora ha scritto più di 25 sceneggiature, tra cui collaborazioni con registi come Susanne Bier, Lone Scherfig e Søren Kragh-Jacobsen. Jensen ha scritto la sceneggiatura per il film di Susanne Bier IN UN MONDO MIGLIORE (2010), che ha vinto l’Oscar come miglior film straniero nel 2011. He studied Visual Design at Hanyang University and worked at Alfred Imageworks as a designer and animation director. Currently, he is developing a feature film adaptation of his short animation JOHNNY EXPRESS at Mofac&Alfred.

Joost Lieuwma lavora come animatore e regista dal 2005. I suoi cortometraggi animati hanno vinto svariati premi in diversi festival cinematografici internazionali. Joost Lieuwma has been working as an animator and director since 2005. His animated short films have won several audience awards on different international film festivals.

The GAYBY BABY team is now rolling out the first stages of a social impact campaign to promote family diversity in schools and communities. GAYBY BABY is Maya’s debut feature.

Matthew Newton è un regista premiato ed acclamato dalla critica, è scrittore e attore. Matthew Newton is a critically acclaimed, award-winning director, writer and actor. After graduating from the National Institute Of Dramatic Art in Sydney he worked extensively as an actor in his native Australia, playing lead roles in the theater, on television and in films. His roles on television include starring as kingpin Terry Clark in the drama series UNDERBELLY: A TALE OF TWO CITIES (which is the most successful Australian crime drama of all time) and playing Ka Jothee on the Syfy Network’s FARSCAPE. Matthew worked regularly in major roles for both the Sydney Theatre Company and the Melbourne Theatre Company, and played lead roles in over ten Australian films. CÉCILE PAYSANT Dopo aver studiato Storia dell’Arte, Cécile ha studiato dal 2011 a La Fémis nel reparto set. J ET LE POISSON è stato prodotto durante gli studi con altri studenti che condividevano lo stesso interesse per l’animazione. Dopo questo primo film, Cécile produrrà quest’anno un nuovo cortometraggio in stop-motion come parte del suo progetto finale di studio. After studying History of Art, Cécile studied since 2011 in La Fémis in the sets department. J AND FISH was produced in parallel with this studies, with other students who shared the same interest in animation in volume. After this first film, Cécile makes this year a new stop-motion short film as part of its Working End of Studies.

ALINE QUERTAIN Aline Quertain è nata a Bruxelles nel 1989. Nel 2007, ha iniziato a studiare a La Cambre a Bruxelles (la scuola nazionale belga di arti visive) specializzandosi in film di animazione. Ha trascorso un anno a studiare in Ungheria, alla Moholy Nagy University. Ha ottenuto il suo master presso La Cambre nel giugno 2012. FRITS STANDAERT Frits Standaert è nato nel 1964. Ha studiato animazione presso l’Accademia Reale di Belle Arti di Gand. Ha iniziato la sua carriera nel settore pubblicitario e lentamente ha spostato la sua attenzione verso la regia di cortometraggi animati, alcuni dei quali sono stati ampiamente premiati in festival internazionali. Attualmente vive e lavora a Gand presso lo studio di animazione Eyeland, il quale si concentra principalmente sui cortometraggi per i bambini, e insegna animazione presso la Scuola RITS of Arts di Bruxelles. This XX edition of the Umbria Film Festival of Montone, will avail itself of the cooperation with the School of Languages and Literatures, Translation and Interpreting of the University of Bologna. Under Dr. Rachele Antonini’s supervision, five students of the first cycle degree in Intercultural and Linguistic Mediation and of the second cycle degree in Translation (Chiara Bartolini, Gioia Zoli, Andrea Mara, Giulia Chierici, Theora Fabbri, Elena Vitali) have subtitled into Italian all the foreign films that will be presented at the Festival.

E devono diventare un sistema coordinato e riconosciuto dalle istituzioni pubbliche, dagli spettatori e dagli sponsor. Per questo motivo e per un concreto spirito di servizio è nata nel novembre 2004 l’Associazione Festival Italiani di Cinema (Afic). Gli associati fanno riferimento ai principi di mutualità e solidarietà che già hanno ispirato in Europa l’attività della Coordination Européenne des Festivals. Inoltre, accettando il regolamento, si impegnano a seguire una serie di indicazioni deontologiche tese a salvaguardare e rafforzare il loro ruolo. Film festivals are very important to the Italian audiovisual system in order to promote, spread and teach about cinema and audiovisual culture, for they pay particular attention to works that are shown very little in the commercial circuits--documentaries, research films, and short films. Film festivals should become a well coordinated system, recognized by public institutions, sponsors, and audience. Therefore, in November 2004, the Italian Cinematographic Festival Association (AFIC) was founded to coordinate and give assistance to the festivals. The members are inspired by the principles of solidarity and mutuality that are at the base of the Coordination Européenne des Festivals de Cinéma. Furthermore, by accepting the regulation, members pledge to follow deontological indications to preserve and strengthen their role. In order to reach its goal, today AFIC represents more than thirty Italian cinema and audiovisual events to help coordinate and spread information amongst the different cultural events.The audiovisual events that are AFIC members have purposes of research, orginality, and promotion of talents as well as national and international cinematographic works. AFIC aims to protect and promote the main objective of the festivals in all institutional offices.
