nel cuore di una città di pietra scura, si dimenano su uno schermo gigante che torreggia su una piazzetta illuminata dalla luna.

Mentre i bambini giocano, le persone sedute ai tavolini sistemate come se fosse un cinema all’aperto, mangiano, conversano e guardano catturate dal film.

Altri preferiscono fuggire cercando salvezza nel bar locale.

Ma non c’è modo di fuggire.

Una luce brilla da dietro il bar e getta le ombre dei bevitori attraverso la piazza sullo schermo.

Lì si mescolano con i personaggi del mio film, in una danza reale e fantastica allo stesso tempo, che rimane per sempre impressa nella mia memoria.

L’Umbria Film Festival di Montone può far suscitare questo tipo di emozioni. È un evento magico.

Sono orgoglioso di farne parte.

While children play, people sitting at tables or chairs arranged as an affresco cinema, eat, talk, watch - captured by the film.

Others prefer to escape - to the safety of the local café.

But there is no escape.

A light shines from behind the bar.

It hurls the shadows of the drinkers back across the square and onto the screen.

There they blend with the characters of my film in a dance of reality and fantasy that remains forever imprinted on my memory.

The Montone Umbria Film Festival can do things like that to you.

It’s a magical event.

MIRCO RINALDI SINDACO DI MONTONE M AYO R O F M O N T O N E Anche quest’anno, nel set naturale di piazza Fortebraccio, fra vociare di persone, profumi di cucina, e l’immancabile rintocco dell’orologio della torre civica, si ripete la magia del cinema con la XXII edizione dell’Umbria Film Festival.

In una società sempre più complessa e non priva di conflitti, il messaggio trasmesso dalla manifestazione è la voglia e la necessità di lasciare spazio alla creatività e all’immaginazione senza dimenticare la realtà, perché il cinema, con la sua capacità di trasfigurazione, aiuta tutti noi a capire meglio il mondo in cui viviamo. La ricetta vincente, apparentemente semplice ma efficace: qualità delle opere proposte, tematiche attuali, grandissimo e impagabile impegno da parte dell’ Associazione Umbria Film Festival e dei volontari, sostegno da parte degli Enti Pubblici e privati, in particolare della Regione dell’Umbria.

Per questi motivi e per tanto altro, l’Umbria Film Festival è riconosciuto a pieno titolo come un Evento Culturale di Eccellenza che nel tempo ha saputo superare i confini regionali e nazionali.

Mai come quest’anno attendevamo la conferma della presenza del nostro concittadino e amico Terry Gilliam che, quasi novello Braccio da Montone, torna vincitore al suo “castello” dopo la “battaglia” di Cannes. Bentornato Presidente Onorario!

Molti, a dire il vero, sono i nomi famosi che hanno apprezzato e continuano ad apprezzare il nostro festival accettando di presentarvi le proprie opere e di discuterne con il pubblico presente.

Ringrazio qui, perciò, tutti coloro che, a vario titolo, continuano a rendere possibile questa manifestazione.

Allora, spegniamo anche quest’anno le luci della piazza e cominciamo a “sognare” ancora una volta.

Yet again, this year, the outdoors theatre set at Fortebraccio main square will be filled with magic of cinema at the 22nd edition of Umbria Film Festival, along with the chatter of the people, the aromas of the Italian cuisine, and the unforgettable chiming of the town’s clock tower.

Living in a world like today’s that is becoming increasingly complex and always with its conflicts, the message we would like to leave you with through the festival is the need and the desire to set aside some space also for creativity and imagination without forgetting about the reality. I believe that through films and their metamorphosis nature, we can all learn to better understand the world we live in. It has all been possible thanks to the perfect combination of quality films, critical current issues that are discussed in the films, the great and priceless amount of work each member of the UFF Association and the volunteers, and the support from private and public organizations, especially the regional municipality of Umbria.

It is also for this reason, among many others, that the UFF is recognized fully as a cultural event of excellence not only within the region and the country, but also internationally.

This year’s festival is especially more exciting since our fellow citizen and friend, Terry Gilliam, one that some may even call the resurrection of Count Braccio of Montone, is returning to his “castle” Montone after the battle of “Cannes”. Welcome back Terry, our honorary president!

It is true, many of our precious guests are famous in the film industry and thanks to their continued appreciation of our festival, they have accepted to show their own films and discuss them with a live audience.

Therefore, I thank every one of you, no matter what your title is, for having made this festival possible yet another year.

Now, let us turn off the lights and “dream together” once more.

BIOGRAFIA/BIOGRAPHY

Il primo corto di Nick Kelly intitolato Delphine (2003) è stato selezionato a vari festival e mandato in onda in 13 paesi diversi nel mondo. Il suo secondo cortoWhy the Irish Dance That Way è uno dei 9 corti selezionati dal Museo d’arte moderna di New York nel 2007 per il “Shortfest: Outstanding shorts from the international festivals”, dedicato ai migliori corti proiettati ai festival internazionali. Nel 2009, la sua sceneggiatura Shoe vince il primo premio al Concorso di sceneggiature per i corti al Vail Film Festival in Colorado e il secondo premio al Champion Screenwriting Competition a Los Angeles. Dopo esser stata proiettata per un breve periodo nei cinema di Los Angeles, Shoe è stato nominato per la categoria miglior cortometraggio al Premio Oscar nel 2011. Nello stesso anno, Nick ha scritto e diretto un film acclamato da pubblico e critica, che ha raccolto fondi per l’Irish Film Archive con l’attrice Saoirse Ronan come protagonista del film.

The Drummer and the Keeper, il lungometraggio d’esordio di Nick, è stato proiettato in anteprima al Galway Film Fleadh a luglio 2017 dove ha vinto il premio per il miglior lungometraggio irlandese d’esordio ed è stato nominato in 4 categorie diverse all’IFTA Awards 2018 fra cui quella per la migliore sceneggiatura.

Ultimamente, Nick e la produttrice Kate McColgan hanno vinto un premio dell’Irish Film Board per sviluppare Incognita, un grande e nuovo progetto per un lungometraggio.

Alla presenza di Dermot Murphy Gabriel è un giovane e confusionario batterista di musica rock che cerca disperatamente di nascondere agli altri già esasperati membri della band il suo bipolarismo diagnosticato solo recentemente. Alla partita di calcio organizzata per i ragazzi affetti da disturbi comportamentali, alla quale Gabriel è costretto a partecipare come parte della sua terapia, viene sbaragliato dal portiere Christopher, un 17enne affetto dalla sindrome di Asperger. Dopo essersi vendicato brutalmente, Gabriel rischia l’espulsione (con il rischio di venire internato in un ospedale psichiatrico), ma gli viene data una seconda occasione di “fare amicizia” con Christopher. Quando il giovane portiere, sempre solo e asociale, decide di diventare amico di Gabriel quest’ultimo se lo ritrova sempre tra i piedi con il rischio che possa svelare il suo segreto agli altri della band e che lo possa mettere in imbarazzo a causa del comportamento indiscreto.

Gabriel is a chaotic, young rock drummer, desperate to hide his recent Bipolar diagnosis from his increasingly exasperated band mates. At the therapeutic mixed-ability football game, to which he is obliged to attend as part of his treatment, Gabriel is spectacularly upended by the goalkeeper, Christopher, who is an institutionalized 17-year-old with Aspergers Syndrome. Having taken violent revenge, Gabriel faces expulsion - and the prospect of being sectioned - unless he “makes friends” with Christopher. When the isolated and socially-inept young goalkeeper takes this grudging offer of friendship literally, Gabriel finds his footsteps dogged and secrets threatened by an embarrassingly eager and dangerously tactless new disciple.

Nick Kelly’s first short Delphine (2003) was selected for numerous film festivals and broadcast in 13 countries worldwide. His second short Why the Irish Dance that Way was one of just nine selected in 2007 by New York’s Museum of Modern Art for “Shortfest: Outstanding Shorts from the International Festivals”. In 2009, his script Shoe won First Prize in the Short Screenplay Competition at the Vail Film Festival (Colorado) and Second Prize in the Champion Screenwriting Competition (Los Angeles). Following a brief theatrical run in Los Angeles, Shoe was one of 10 movies that made it onto the shortlist in the Live Action Short category for the 2011 Academy Awards.

In 2011, Nick wrote and directed a much-admired fundraising film for the Irish Film Archive featuring Saoirse Ronan.

Nick’s first feature, The Drummer and the Keeper, premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July 2017 where it won Best Irish First Feature. The Drummer and the Keeper has been nominated in 4 categories at the 2018 IFTA Awards, among which, Best Screenplay for Nick’s script.

Most recently, Nick and Producer Kate McColgan have been awarded funding by the Irish Film Board to develop a major new feature film project called Incognita.

Bombardamenti sui civili, missili contro postazioni militari, scoperta di fosse comuni a Raqqa, spari sul team di sicurezza dell’Onu, raid di caccia russi sulla Provincia di Idlib, gas cloro usato in attacchi a Saraqeb, tanto per citare a caso alcuni recenti titoli di giornali.

Si tratta di notizie frammentate, non sempre limpide, nella maggior parte dei casi difficili da decifrare.

Una sola positiva notizia: l’arrivo in Italia a fine maggio attraverso i corridoi umanitari della Comunità di Sant’Egidio e delle Chiese Protestanti di un nuovo gruppo di profughi siriani in fuga.

News about the Syria war continue to show a dramatic situation.

Bombing on civilians, missiles at military posts the acknowledgment of mass graves in Raqqa, shooting at the Onu security team, Russian raids above the province of Idlib, chlorine gas used in various attacks in Saraqeb, just to randomly cite some recent headlines of newspapers. They are fragmented news, not always clear, in the most part difficult to codify. Only one is positive: the arrival in Italy of a new group of Syrian refugees on the run, at the end of May, through the humanitarian corridors of the Community of Sant’Egidio and of Protestant Churches.

In Bianco e Nero è un progetto creato da due artiste, Claudia Andreani e Valeria Vestrelli, assieme ai richiedenti asilo. Il titolo stesso parla di vite vissute in un presente ‘in bianco e nero’ dove i colori del passato sono stati lasciati alle spalle. ‘Bianco e nero’ esprime anche il concetto di diversità: culture diverse che si incontrano, a volte scontrandosi altre dialogando.

Sono stati organizzati due laboratori di ceramica artistica a Ponte Felcino usufruendo degli insegnamenti dello scultore nigeriano Eghomie Kennedy. Molti giovani di diverse nazionalità hanno partecipato ai laboratori, 15 di loro sono richiedenti asilo e vivono nell’ostello “Villa Giardino” di Ponte Felcino. Questo progetto è stato creato in collaborazione con due associazioni: “Ponte Felcino 3.0” di Perugia e “Officina via fratta” di Umbertide.

Il workshop punta al tema del vivere insieme e intende creare un’atmosfera amichevole e serena dove la diversità è vista come uno dei punti più importanti per lo sviluppo e non come ostacolo.

In black and white is a project created by the two artists, Claudia Andreani and Valeria Vestrelli, in collaboration with refugees. The title talk about life stories in this present ‘black and white’ where the colors of their past have been left behind. ‘Black and white’ also means diversity of cultures that meet together, sometimes colliding, sometimes holding a dialogue. This project organised some workshops in collaboration with two associations, “Ponte Felcino 3.0” and “Officina via fratta”. The workshops took place in Ponte Felcino, a lot of asylum seekers and people from different nationalities participated and 15 of them live in the hostel of Villa Giardino in Ponte Felcino. During the workshops the guys experimented some ceramic technics with the art direction of a Nigerian sculptor, Eghomie Kennedy. The workshops aim to create a new friendly atmosphere where ‘diversity’ means cultural enrichment not cultural barrier.

Thomas, a young German baker, is having an affair with Oren, an Israeli married man who frequently travels to Berlin for business. Thomas starts to work for her and bakes German cakes and cookies that bring life to her cafe. Then, one day, Thomas finds himself involved in Anat’s life in a way far beyond his anticipation, and to protect the truth, he will have to stretch his lie to a point of no return.

Ofir Raul Graizer è un regista e video-artist israeliano. Dopo aver lavorato per anni in vari settori è andato a studiare cinematografia al Sapir College a Sderot in Israele. È conosciuto a livello mondiale da quando i suoi corti, diretti durante gli anni universitari, sono stati presentati e proiettati a vari festival. Dopo la laurea, ha codiretto La discotheque, che è stato proiettato a diversi festival, fra cui la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs di Cannes. Ha vinto delle borse di studio per dei workshop di cinematografia come Nipkow Program, Berlinale Talents, Agora Film Market. The Cakemaker è il suo primo lungometraggio. Al momento abita fra Berlino, Gerusalemme e Uckermark in Germania.

Insegna cucina medio orientale e allo stesso tempo lavora ai suoi prossimi progetti cinematografici.

Ofir Raul Graizer is an Israeli film director and video artist. After working for years in different fields ranging from textile to gastronomy, he went to study Film in Sapir College in Sderot, a city in the south of Israel. During his studies, he directed several short films that were screened in numerous festivals and received worldwide acclaim. After his graduation, he co-directed La Discotheque, which was shown in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and other film festivals. Furthermore, he was accepted to various renown film workshops such as the Nipkow Program, Berinale Talents, Agora Film Market, and more.

The Cakemaker is his very first feature film.

Currently he lives alternating between his residence in Berlin, Jerusalem, and the region Uckermark in northern Germany, and he teaches Middle Eastern cuisine others, all the while developing his next film projects.

She enjoys the liberal household in a Rococo world and tastes freedom for the first time, but begins to notice that as Mesmer’s treatment brings back her eyesight, she is also losing her cherished musical virtuosity.

Nata a Vienna nel 1970, Barbara Albert ha studiato regia e sceneggiatura alla Vienna Film Academy. Dopo aver presentato i suoi corti a numerosi festival, è stata riconosciuta a livello internazionale per il suo primo film Nordrand presentato alla Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia nel 1999.

Sempre nello stesso anno, Barbara fonda la casa di produzione Coop99 insieme a Martin Gschlacht, Jessica Hausner e Antonin Svoboda. Ha prodotto Grbavica, Darwin’s Nightmare, Sleeper e Lovely Rita. In qualità di sceneggiatrice, ha collaborato con Jasmila Zbanic, Andrea Staka, Ruth Mader e Michael Glawogger.

Dopo Free radicals, Falling e The Dead and the Living che sono stati proiettati in anteprima a San Sebastián, Venezia e Locarno. Mademoiselle Paradis è il suo quinto lungometraggio. I suoi film sono stati pluripremiati nei festival di tutto il mondo. È professoressa e vice-presidente della Film University Babelsberg “Konrad Wolf” a Potsdam (Germania). After Free Radicals, Falling, and The Dead and the Living, which premiered in the film competitions at San Sebastian (Spain), Venice (Italy), and Locarno (Switzerland), Mademoiselle Paradis is Barbara’s 5th feature film. Her films have received numerous awards. She is a teacher and the vice president of Film University Babelsberg “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam (Germany) and has been living in Berlin ever since 2010. In 2016, she co-founded a Berlin-based production company called CALA Film together with the producers of Mademoiselle Paradis: Martina Haubrich and Michael Kitzberger. Her next project is developing her next feature film Secrets from the Russian Tea Room, which will be taking place in New York. She will be starting with the pre-production later this year.

Terry Gilliam’s life has been just as animated, fun, and unconventional as are his films, going from living a humble childhood in the icy fields of Minnesota to entering the thrilling world of Hollywood, only to choose not to conform to the mainstream culture of New York, LA, or London during the 60s and the 70s.

Terry Gilliam, who is also the director of films such as Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, not to mention being one of the founding members of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, will be telling the story of his life up until his very last adventure, directing his latest film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018).

L’unico membro fondatore americano del Circo volante dei Monty Python, Terry Gilliam si è laureato in scienze politiche all’Occidental College di Los Angeles, dopodiché si è trasferito a New York dov’è diventato il vice redattore della rivista Help! Magazine e un fumettista freelance. Nel 1967 è partito per l’Inghilterra dove ha iniziato un nuovo capitolo della sua vita come animatore.

Dopo aver messo il suo nome sul grande schermo come co-regista di Monty Python e il Sacro Graal, è anche riuscito a far credere alle persone che lui sia stato totalmente responsabile per la produzione di film come Jabberwocky, Banditi del tempo, Brazil, Le avventure del barone di Munchausen, La leggenda del Re Pescatore, L’esercito delle 12 scimmie, Paura e delirio a Las Vegas, I fratelli Grimm e l’incantevole strega, Tideland – Il mondo capovolto, Parnassus – L’uomo che voleva ingannare il diavolo, The Zero Theorem – Tutto è vanità e finalmente dopo più di 25 anni, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Per tenersi impegnato tra un film e l’altro, si è catapultato nel mondo dell’opera nel 2012, dirigendo l’English National Opera ne La dannazione di Faust di Berlioz e nel 2014 ha diretto lo stesso gruppo in Benvenuto Cellini, sempre di Berlioz. È stato premiato e nominato numerose volte per i suoi film e le sue opere liriche.

The only American member of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Terry Gilliam graduated in political science from Occidental College in Los Angeles, moved to New York and became Assistant Editor of Help!

Magazine and a freelance cartoonist. In 1967 he left America for England and started a new life as an animator. Having got his name up on the silver screen as Co-Director of Monty Python and the holy Grail, he has subsequently managed to fool people into believing that he has been totally responsible for such films as Jabberwocky,Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Brothers Grim, Tideland, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Zero Theorem and finally, after more than 25 years, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

To keep himself busy in between films he plunged into the world of opera in 2012 directing for the English National Opera, Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust and, in 2014, Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini.

His films and operas have won many awards and lost even more.

La sezione Umbriametraggi, nata nel 2007 come evento sperimentale, dopo 12 anni (e dopo più di 100 cortometraggi) è diventata una presenza consueta e attesa nella programmazione dell’Umbria Film Festival. La sezione, in particolare, propone una selezione di cortometraggi di filmmaker umbri, scelti attraverso uno specifico concorso. Una giuria ha selezionato quest’anno, tra tutti quelli inviati, undici corti che avranno la possibilità di essere premiati. Le storie, gli stili, le prospettive e i generi diversi che animano gli Umbriametraggi offrono al pubblico un ulteriore punto di vista sulle vie e sulle sperimentazioni del cinema indipendente. Esperti, appassionati e curiosi possono così trovare nel borgo umbro, tra il teatro e la piazza, tra i vicoli e gli scorci panoramici, un luogo d’elezione per nuovi spunti, incontri, scambi e contaminazioni.

The Umbriametraggi section, created in 2007 as an experimental event, has become after twelve years (and after more than 100 short movies) a familiar and much-awaited event in the programme of Umbria Film Festival. The section, in particular, presents a selection of short films by Umbrian filmmakers, chosen through a specific competition. This year, a jury has selected, among several entries, eleven short films that will have the chance to be rewarded. The different stories, styles, perspectives and genres presented at Umbriametraggi will offer the audience a further point of view on the trends and experimentations of independent filmmaking. Experts, enthusiasts and curious will find in the Umbrian village, between the theater and the piazza, among the narrow streets and panoramic views, a place of choice for new ideas, meetings, exchanges and interactions.

La Società Filarmonica BRACCIO FORTEBRACCIO nasce a Montone, piccolo paese medievale in provincia di Perugia, intorno al 1850 per merito di alcuni cittadini appassionati per la musica. Da allora non ha mai interrotto l’attività, tranne nei periodi bellici. Ha sottolineato con la sua presenza i momenti di vita più importanti per la comunità montonese con servizi e concerti. Ne hanno fatto parte come musicanti oltre trecento persone. Attualmente è formata da circa quaranta elementi e dal 1973 è diretta dal maestro Rolando Tironzelli.

The Società Filarmonica BRACCIO FORTEBRACCIO was founded around 1850 in Montone, a small medieval village in the province of Perugia, thanks to a group of citizens with a passion for music. Since then it has never ceased its activity, except in times of war. The sound of the band has touched the hearts of many in Montone, visited at its countless number of concerts. More than three hundred musicians have been members of the band. Currently the band is made up of about forty members and Maestro Rolando Tironzelli conducts it since 1973.

LELLO ARENA Raffaele Arena, conosciuto come Lello è un cabarettista, attore e doppiatore italiano, esponente della nuova comicità napoletana (portata alla ribalta dal gruppo teatrale La Smorfia nella seconda metà degli anni Settanta), assieme a Massimo Troisi ed Enzo Decaro.

L’incontro con Massimo Troisi avviene a tredici anni, durante uno spettacolo teatrale nel teatro parrocchiale della Chiesa di Sant’Anna. Arena dedica anima e corpo al teatro, spinto soprattutto dall’amico Troisi. Insieme a quest’ultimo e altri amici (tra cui Enzo Decaro) forma il gruppo Rh-Negativo, inaugurando un nuovo tipo di teatro che attinge alla farsa napoletana e al cabaret.

Nel 1977 il gruppo (rinominato I saraceni e successivamente La Smorfia) si assottiglia e rimangono oltre ad Arena, solo Troisi e Decaro. Nel 1981 Massimo Troisi lo chiama ad interpretare il personaggio di Lello, l’amico invadente del protagonista Gaetano in Ricomincio da tre. Nel 1982 è protagonista assoluto del film di Lodovico Gasparini No grazie, il caffè mi rende nervoso. Nello stesso anno partecipa come comparsa al mediometraggio Morto Troisi, viva Troisi! Nel 1983 gioca un ruolo importante nel secondo film di Troisi, Scusate il ritardo, dove impersona le manie e le nevrosi di chi è stato lasciato dalla fidanzata. Per questo ruolo viene premiato con il David di Donatello come miglior attore non protagonista.

Dopo altri film con grandi protagonisti del cinema italiano si cimenta nella regia e nella sceneggiatura con Chiari di luna (1988). Dall’inizio degli anni ’90 si dedica al teatro oltre che al cinema e alla televisione. Nel 2018, trent’anni dopo il suo primo film, dirige gli Arteteca nel film Finalmente sposi.

Raffaele Arena, better known as Lello Arena, is an Italian stand-up comedian, actor, and voice actor, who is also a key spokesman, along with Massimo Troisi and Enzo Decaro, for a new Neapolitan comedy sketch group called La Smorfia that begins to gain its fame in the late 70s.

Lello Arena first meets Massimo Troisi at the age of 13 during a theater performance at the community theater organized by Sant’Anna Church. Arena, inspired by his friend Troisi, dedicates his body and soul to theater. Together with Troisi and other friends of theirs (among whom, there was also Enzo Decaro), Arena forms a theater group called RH-Negativo, introducing a revolutionary style of theater performance that incorporates both the Neapolitan farce and the stand-up comedy.

The group, which since then changed its name to I Saraceni and later to La Smorfia, starts to grow thin until 1977 when only three of them – Arena, Troisi, and Decaro – are still remaining. In 1981, Troisi asks Arena to play Lello, the invasive friend of Gaetano, who is also the protagonist of Troisi’s film Ricomincio da tre.

In 1982, Arena plays the protagonist in Lodovico Gasparini’s film No grazie, il caffè mi rende nervoso and makes an appearance in Troisi’s medium-length film Morto Troisi, Viva Troisi! Then, in 1983, Arena plays an important role in Troisi’s second feature Scusate il ritardo, in which he acts the part of a man that suffers from mania and neurosis after his girlfriend breaks up with him. For his outstanding acting in the film, Arena is awarded with the David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actor. After starring side by side with some of the best Italian actors, Arena plunges himself into the world of directing and screenplay writing and makes his debut as a director with Chiari di Luna (1988). Then, from the early 90s, he focuses his career on theater while continuing on with film and television.

In 2018, 30 years after his first film, Arena directs Finalmente Sposi, a film starring the comedy duo Arteteca.

Only when he became the magnificent artist that everybody love, melodies of Oh that cello! were proposed again by Chaplin and were appreciated together with his qualities as composer and his talent as violoncellist. And, only in that moment, Chaplin granted himself the pleasure of playing, as he imagined for a duet violoncello/piano, that repertory in front of chosen audience of friends and distinguished guests he entertained with his music during special evenings and with anecdotes and curiosity from his life. Therefore now make yourself comfortable, relax and enjoy the pleasant feeling of being among the guests of honor during one of those special evenings at Chaplin’s home.

Francesca Taviani si è diplomata presso il Conservatorio “Santa Cecilia” di Roma. Si è classificata ai primi posti in Concorsi Nazionali e Internazionali di Musica da Camera ed è risultata finalista al Concorso Internazionale Gui di Firenze. Ha costituito il Trio Alibert, ha fatto parte del Quartetto di Roma, è stato primo violoncello dell’Officina Musicale e dell’Ensemble Aracoeli. Svolge un’intensa attività concertistica nei principali teatri e sale da concerto italiane.

Vincitrice del Concorso per l’insegnamento nei Conservatori, è titolare della cattedra di Musica da Camera presso il Conservatorio “Giuseppe Martucci” di Salerno.

Oh That Chaplin! è il racconto del più grande fallimento di uno dei geni più straordinari che abbia mai avuto il cinema di tutti i tempi. Solo pochi sanno che, prima di intraprendere la sua sfolgorante carriera, Chaplin considerò molto seriamente la possibilità di raggiungere il successo come concertista. Come violoncellista Chaplin compose anche un repertorio musicale in previsione della sua futura carriera di solista. Oh that cello! è il titolo che diede alla raccolta dei brani. Il colpo di grazia definitivo su questa sfortunata disavventura arrivò quando Bert Clark, un eccellente pianista dell’epoca, convinse Chaplin a fare società con lui nel settore musicale. Chaplin e Clark stamparono duemila copie degli spartiti e si misero in ghingheri per aspettare la folla di clienti che, secondo loro, sarebbero arrivati a frotte all’istante.

Ne vendettero invece soltanto tre copie e l’impresa dovette rapidamente chiudere i battenti per evitare la bancarotta. Solo quando divenne l’artista sublime che tutti amiamo, le melodie di Oh that cello! furono riproposte da Chaplin ed apprezzate insieme alle sue qualità di compositore ed al suo talento di violoncellista. E solo allora Chaplin si concesse il piacere di eseguire, così come lui l’aveva concepita per un duo violoncello/pianoforte, quel repertorio davanti ad una platea sceltissima di amici ed ospiti di riguardo che intratteneva in serate straordinarie con la sua musica, ma anche con aneddoti e curiosità tratti dalla sua vita.

Perciò adesso mettetevi comodi, rilassatevi e godetevi la piacevole sensazione di essere tra gli ospiti d’onore di una di quelle serate speciali di casa Chaplin.

Oh that Chaplin! is the narration of the greatest failure of one of the most extraordinary genius that cinema of all time has never had. Only a few know that, before embarking on his brilliant career, Chaplin considered very seriously the possibility of achieving success as concert player, as violoncellist.

Chaplin also composed, for this aim, a musical repertory foreseeing his future career as soloist.

She graduated from the “Santa Cecilia” Conservatoire of Rome.She placed highly in national and international chamber music competitions. She was a finalist in the International Competition Gui in Florence. She founded the Trio Alibert and has been a member of the Quartetto di Roma. She was principal cellist of the Officina Musicale and the Aracoeli Ensemble. She has passed through the national recruitment process, formally obtaining eligibility to teach Chamber Music. She teaches at the “Giuseppe Martucci” Conservatoire in Salerno.

R O S S E L L A G I O R D A N O BIOGRAFIA/BIOGRAPHY Rossella Giordano si è diplomata in pianoforte presso il Conservatorio di Musica “G. Martucci” di Salerno, risultando vincitrice della borsa di studio offerta dall’ Associazione F. I. D. A. P. A. quale miglior diplomata dell’anno accademico. Nel 2005 ha vinto un audizione interna presso il Conservatorio di Salerno per partecipare ad una tournèe di concerti di musica da camera in Austria Nel 2006 è entrata a far parte dell’Orchestra Giovanile Italiana di Fiesole. Qui ha avuto l’opportunità di studiare con maestri come Tiziano Mealli, Konstantin Bogino, Antonello Farulli, Andrea Nannoni, Renato Rivolta e ha superato l’ esame finale di formazione orchestrale con il massimo dei voti. Nel 2013 si è laureata in Pianoforte Jazz. Attualmente è titolare della cattedra di strumento musicale presso l’Istituto Comprensivo “I. Soldi” di Polla, si sta perfezionando con il Maestro Carlos Parreira e svolge attività concertistica.

Rossella Giordano graduated in piano at the Conservatory ”G. Martucci” in Salerno, resulting winner of the scholarship offered by the Association F. I. D. A. P. A. as best graduate of the year. In 2005 she won an internal audition at the Conservatory in Salerno to take part in one tour of chamber music concerts in Austria. Bastien Alexandre Bastien Alexandre ha studiato graphic design e cinema e attualmente lavora come illustratore e Storyboard artist. Nel 2001, ha iniziato una collaborazione con il Cirque du Soleil come artista concettuale. Dal 2008, si occupa anche della messa in scena e oggi è il regista dell’ultimo spettacolo del Cirque du Soleil, Volta.

Bastien ha diretto il suo primo cortometraggio nel 2016.

After studying graphic design and cinema, Bastien went on to work as an illustrator and a storyboard artist.

In 2001, he began a collaboration with the Cirque du Soleil team as their concept artist. In 2008, he moved to stage directing, and is currently directing Volta, their latest choreography. Bastien directed his first short film in 2016.

Nora Marie Back Nora Marie Back è nata in Lussemburgo nel 1991. Ha iniziato a studiare animazione nel 2013 alla Filmakademie Baden-Wütternberg. L’animazione in 2D è una sua grande passione come lo sono l’illustrazione e l’arte concettuale.

Nora Marie Back was born in 1991 in Luxembourg, School of Fine Arts. Since 2013, she has been majoring in Animation at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. She is greatly passionate about working with 2D animation, but also has other interests such as illustration and concept art.

Anne Castaldo, Sarah Chalek, Elsa Nesme, Adrien Rouquié Adrien Rouquié, Anne Castaldo, Elsa Nesme e Sarah Chalek hanno studiato tutti animazione alla MOPA di Arles in Francia. Outdoors è il loro ultimo cortometraggio.

Natalie van den Dungen Natalie van den Dungen è una sceneggiatrice e regista Australiana. il suo primo cortometraggio Bunny New Girl ha vinto 15 premi in tutto il mondo. Prima del 2015, Natalie ha affinato il suo talento lavorando come regista e co-produttrice per delle serie per il web, dei backstage e nel dirigere 35 videoclip per alcuni dei più famosi musicisti australiani. All’inizio della sua carriera, Natalie ha lavorato per 7 anni come assistente operatore. Ha conseguito la sua laurea magistrale in sceneggiatura all’AFTRS. Attualmente sta lavorando allo sviluppo di un film che racconta il passaggio dall’adolescenza alla maggiore età e una serie di episodi brevi. Natalie van den Dungen is a Sydney-based writer and director, whose short film Bunny New Girl exploded onto the world stage of film festivals in 2015 and claimed 15 film awards. Prior to this, Natalie had been honing her craft as a director and co-producer of behind-the-scenes, webisodes, and interstitials for major network drama shows and directing more than 35 music videos for some of Australia’s best entertainers.

In her early career, Natalie spent 7 years as a camera assistant on feature films and television. She has a graduate degree in screenwriting from AFTRS and is currently developing a coming-of-age feature film and a short series based on her screenplay for Sherbert Rozencrantz, You’re Beautiful, as both the screenwriter and the director.

Andy Poon Andy Poon è un creativo e un designer d’arte concettuale di Vancouver. Ha contribuito alla creazione dei concept dei personaggi per le serie TV Arrow, The Flash e Legends of tomorrow e ha anche realizzato il design per i giocattoli delle serie d’animazione Storm Hawks, Hotwheels, SlugTerra - Lumache esplosive, Monster High Maxsteel and Blaze e Monster Machines nell’ultimo decennio. Béla Klingl Béla Klingl è nato in Ungheria nel 1971. Si è laureato alla Scuola di animazione dell’Università ungherese delle belle arti nel 1999. Fin dal 1999 realizza i “K.G.B. Visual Workshop” ed è fondatore del K.G.B. Studio che dal 2002 produce anche pubblicità e titoli per i telegiornali, oltre a film di animazione. Si è occupato degli effetti speciali visivi e dell’animazione per dei film riconosciuti a livello internazionale come Corpo e anima di Ildikó Enyedi, che è stato premiato con l’Orso d’oro e nominato dall’Academy (A.M.P.A.S.) americana per il Premio Oscar al miglior film straniero nel 2018. Ha anche lavorato nella produzione del cortometraggio Maestro, nominato al Premio Oscar come miglior cortometraggio d’animazione nel 2005, e del film Nyócker, che ha vinto il premio come miglior lungometraggio ad Annecy (Francia) nel 2005. Ambassadors of the Cosmos è l’ultimo cortometraggio d’animazione realizzato da Klingl. Attualmente sta lavorando alle sue nuove serie Boxi e Hunor come regista, sceneggiatore e produttore.

Béla Klingl was born in 1971 in Hungary. He graduated in 1999 at the Animation School of Hungarian University of Applied Arts. He founded the KGB Visual Workshop in 1999 and then KGB Studio in 2002, where they also produce commercials and television headlines besides the animated films. He worked on visual effects and animations of internationally acclaimed works, such as Ildikó Enyedi’s Gold-Bear Prize winning film On Body and Soul in 2017, which has been nominated by the American Film Academy for 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He worked also on Maestro, which was nominated for the Oscar Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2005, and Nyócker, which won the 2005 Feature Film Award in Annecy. Ambassadors of the Cosmos is his latest short animated film. As an animation director, scriptwriter and producer, he is currently working on his newest series as Boxi and Hunor.

Maria Koneva Maria Koneva è nata a Kaluga in Russia nel 1989. Dopo aver conseguito la laurea, si è trasferita a Mosca dove ha iniziato a girare cortometraggi e pubblicità televisive con un piccolo gruppo d’amici, con i quali ha poi organizzato uno studio di animazione dal nome “7BiOz”. Si è laureata a “Shar School-Studio” nel 2015 e lavora attualmente come libera professionista e regista di serie d’animazione.

Maria Koneva was born in Kaluga in 1989. She moved to Moscow after graduating from school. She started shooting stop-motion short films and commercials with a small group of friends, with whom she organized an animation studio called “7BiOz”. She graduated from “Shar School-Studio” in 2015 and currently works as free-lance animator and director of animation series.

Ty Primosch Ty Primosch è un animatore e regista neworkese. Lavora come artista al Blue Sky Studios, e ha collaborato a L’era glaciale, Epic - Il mondo segreto, Rio 2 - Missione Amazzonia, Snoopy & Friends - Il film dei Peanuts e Il toro Ferdinando. Corky è il suo primo cortometraggio d’animazione indipendente e tutto il lavoro d’animazione è stato realizzato nel suo appartamento per un periodo di 6 anni.

Ty Primosch is an animator and a film director from Greater New York. He currently works as an artist at Blue Sky Studios and is credited with Ice Age, Epic, Rio 2, Peanuts, and the upcoming movie Ferdinand, Corky is Ty’s independent short animation film debut. It was animated out of his apartment over a 6-year period.

Kolja Saksida Kolja Saksida è regista, produttore e professore che ha conseguito la sua laurea magistrale in cinematografia presso l’ECAL in Svizzera. Ha sviluppato la serie d’animazione Koyaa e i suoi film sono stati presentati a più di 250 festival internazionali. Saksida lavora in qualità di professore assistente alla Scuola d’arte presso l’Università di Nova Gorica ed è il direttore della casa di produzione ZVVIKS. Koyaa – Naughty Toy Car è il suo ultimo corto.

Kolja Saksida is a director, producer, and teacher who received his Master’s degree in Film Studies from the ECAL University in Lausanne. He worked on the animated series “Koyaa” and his films were shown at more than 250 international film festivals and other venues worldwide. Saksida is an assistant professor at the School of Arts of University of Nova Gorica, and the director of the production company ZVVIKS. Koyaa – Naughty Toy Car is his latest film.

Maïté Schmitt Maïté Schmitt è nata in Francia. Dopo la maturità, ha conseguito la laurea triennale all’École Pivaut di Nantes dove ha studiato animazione classica in 2D e si è laureata nel 2012. Dal 2012 fino al 2017, Maïté ha studiato animazione al Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. A Priori è il suo progetto finale di laurea.

John Sheedy John Sheedy è un regista teatrale australiano pluripremiato e i suoi capolavori sono stati rappresentati molte volte in tutta l’Australia. Mark Smith is a filmmaker from Portland, Oregon. He has produced the films North, Denmark, and A House, a Home. As a cinematographer, Mark spent many years filming winter expeditions in North America and South America. He is the co-author of two photography books, namely Osterlandet and The Powder Road. Two Balloons is Mark’s first animated film.

A S S O C I A Z I O N E F E S T I VA L I TA L I A N I D I C I N E M A Nel complesso del sistema audiovisivo italiano, i festival rappresentano un soggetto fondamentale per la promozione, la conoscenza e la diffusione della cultura cinematografica e audiovisiva, con un’attenzione particolare alle opere normalmente poco rappresentate nei circuiti commerciali come ad esempio il documentario, il film di ricerca, il cortometraggio. E devono diventare un sistema coordinato e riconosciuto dalle istituzioni pubbliche, dagli spettatori e dagli sponsor. Per questo motivo e per un concreto spirito di servizio è nata nel novembre 2004 l’Associazione Festival Italiani di Cinema (Afic). Gli associati fanno riferimento ai principi di mutualità e solidarietà che già hanno ispirato in Europa l’attività della Coordination Européenne des Festivals. Inoltre, accettando il regolamento, si impegnano a seguire una serie di indicazioni deontologiche tese a salvaguardare e rafforzare il loro ruolo. L’Afic nell’intento di promuovere il sistema festival nel suo insieme, rappresenta già oggi più di trenta manifestazioni cinematografiche e audiovisive italiane ed è concepita come strumento di coordinamento e reciproca informazione.

Aderiscono all’Afic le manifestazioni culturali nel campo dell’audiovisivo caratterizzate dalle finalità di ricerca, originalità, promozione dei talenti e delle opere cinematografiche nazionali ed internazionali.

L’Afic si impegna a tutelare e promuovere, presso tutte le sedi istituzionali, l’obiettivo primario dei festival associati.

Film festivals are very important to the Italian audiovisual system in order to promote, spread and teach about cinema and audiovisual culture, for they pay particular attention to works that are shown very little in the commercial circuits--documentaries, research films, and short films. Film festivals should become a well coordinated system, recognized by public institutions, sponsors, and audience. Therefore, in November 2004, the Italian Cinematographic Festival Association (AFIC) was founded to coordinate and give assistance to the festivals. The members are inspired by the principles of solidarity and mutuality that are at the base of the Coordination Européenne des Festivalsde Cinéma. Furthermore, by accepting the regulation, members pledge to follow deontological indications to preserve and strengthen their role. In order to reach its goal, today AFIC represents more than thirty Italian cinema and audiovisual events to help coordinate and spread information amongst the different cultural events.The audiovisual events that are AFIC members have purposes of research, orginality, and promotion of talents as well as national and international cinematographic works. AFIC aims to protect and promote the main objective of the festivals in all institutional offices.
