Mina Cheon (천민정), M.F.A. ’02

Maryland Institute College of Art

Mina Cheon, M.F.A. ’02, imaging and digital arts, is a global Korean-American new media artist, scholar, educator, and the dean of undergraduate studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) who divides her time between Baltimore, New York, and Seoul, Korea. Cheon has exhibited her political pop art known as “Polipop” internationally and draws inspiration from global media and popular culture to produce artworks that intersect politics and pop art in subversive and provocative ways.

While she creates work that ranges in medium from new media, video, installation, performance, and public projects to traditional media of painting and sculptures, her thematic focus includes geopolitical and contested spaces, race, culture, and postcolonialism, and Asia’s relationship to the Western world in global media culture. Cheon has worked on North Korean awareness and global peace projects since 2004 and the content of the work is in historic alignment to appropriation art and global activism art. Cheon’s specific focus on East-Asia reflects the transgenerational trauma of Korea’s history, of its division and war and of Japanese colonization. Having parents originate from the North and herself part of the Korean global diaspora, Cheon’s art results from a lifetime of working

with a cultural comparative lens and understanding Asia through its power relations with the world. Cheon shared her work at the Busan Biennale 2018, and has exhibited her work and/or in the collection of the Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul Olympic Museum, American University Museum, Smith College Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland Art Place Contemporary Art Center, Insa Art Space Korean Arts Council, C. Grimaldis Gallery, Lance Fung Gallery, Trunk Gallery, and represented by the Ethan Cohen Gallery in New York.

Cheon is the author of Shamanism + Cyberspace (Atropos Press, 2009). She is a professor at MICA; was a visiting professor and lecturer at Ewha Womans University in Seoul; and a mentor of Art-Uni-On, a global mentorship network by Hyundai Co. and the Seoul National University College of Fine Arts. Cheon received her Ph.D. in philosophy of media and communications from the European Graduate School, European University for Interdisciplinary Studies, Switzerland; has two M.F.A. degrees, one from Hoffberger School of Painting from MICA and another in imaging and digital Arts from UMBC; and her B.F.A. is in painting from Ewha Womans University, Korea.

U.S. National Science Foundation

The Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan is a computer scientist and engineer and the 15th director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). He was nominated by the President of the United States and then unanimously confirmed by the Senate on June 18, 2020. The NSF is a $9.06 billion independent federal agency charged with advancing all fields of scientific discovery, technological innovation, and STEM education.

A leader in science, engineering, and education, Panchanathan has built a distinguished career in higher education and government over three decades. He has designed and built knowledge enterprises that have advanced research innovation, strategic partnerships, entrepreneurship, global development, and economic growth.

As NSF director, Panchanathan maintains leadership roles on several key interagency councils and committees, including serving as co-chair of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship and as a member of the White House CHIPS Implementation Steering Council and the White House Gender Policy Council. Panchanathan previously served as executive vice president of the Arizona State University Knowledge Enterprise, where he also was chief research and

innovation officer. He was also founder and director of the Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing at ASU. Under his leadership, the university increased research performance fivefold, earning recognition as the fastest growing and most innovative research university in the U.S. Panchanathan’s scientific contributions have advanced the areas of humancentered multimedia computing, haptic user interfaces, and ubiquitous computing technologies for enhancing the quality of life for individuals with different abilities, machine learning for multimedia applications and media processor designs. For his scientific contributions, Panchanathan has received numerous awards and honors. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery, and other prestigious science and engineering organizations. Before joining the NSF, Panchanathan served by presidential appointment on the National Science Board, where he was a chair of the committee on strategy. Additionally, he was chair of the council on research of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and co-chair of the extreme innovation task force of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils.

Academic Regalia: Caps, Gowns, Hoods, and Their Meanings

The procession of faculty and staff dressed in academic regalia is one of the most colorful and distinctive elements of the university’s Convocation and Commencement ceremonies. The style of the robe and the color and length of the hood serve to distinguish the academic degree the wearer has earned and the institution from which it was awarded.

The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form. Patterned after monks’ robes, the earliest academic robes were made of heavy wool—useful for keeping warm in unheated buildings. The long and colorful hoods worn today probably originally served a similar useful purpose.

In the days of Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control even to the extent of its minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain disciplines was a much later development and was standardized in the United States in the late 19th century.

CAPS

Mortarboards, or “Oxford caps,” trace their history to the square cap with a tuft on top that was awarded to students in the Middle Ages when they completed their courses of study. The mortarboard is always black. Individuals who have earned doctorates may also opt to wear an eight-sided soft tam or beret, after the style of those worn at Cambridge University. The tassel fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap is usually black or, in the case of a doctoral degree, gold.

GOWNS

Prior to the Civil War, students at most American universities wore caps and gowns every day. Today they are used almost exclusively at ceremonial occasions. Some universities, such as Oxford in England, still require their students to wear gowns and hoods every day. The bachelor’s degree gown is the simplest—plain black with pointed sleeves. The master’s degree gown has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, and is worn with a hood. The gown for the doctoral degree is the most elaborate, with bell-shaped sleeves marked with three velvet bars and a long, colorful hood. Almost all academic gowns are black, although a number of institutions now have doctoral gowns in their university’s color. UMBC’s doctoral gowns are black and gold.

HOODS

Awarded at graduation to master’s and doctoral degree students, hoods are another distinguishing part of the academic costume. The length of the hood varies based on degree. The master’s hood is 3.5 feet long with a 3-inch side border and the doctoral hood is 4 feet long with a 5-inch-wide border.

Hoods are lined with the official colors of the college or university that conferred the degree, or the college or university at which the wearer serves on the faculty. UMBC’s hoods are lined with black and gold. The hood’s border is outlined in a color that indicates the wearer’s field of study.

There are 25 different approved colors for designation of disciplines in the academic costume. The disciplines and colors most likely to be seen in the faculty procession at UMBC are:

STOLES AND CORDS

The gold stoles worn by graduates denote honors. Red cords are worn by graduates who have earned a 4.0 grade point average and who have completed at least 60 graded credits at UMBC. Blue cords are worn by graduates who are UMBC Meyerhoff Scholars, high-achieving students who have an interest in pursuing doctoral study in the sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, and engineering, and who are interested in the advancement of minorities in these fields.

HONORS

Honors are based upon coursework taken over the duration of a student’s undergraduate academic career at UMBC. To be eligible for honors, students must have earned at least 60 graded credits at UMBC (excluding Pass/Fail and Audit grades) with a GPA requirement as follows:

Summa cum laude

With highest honor 3.95 – 4.0 GPA

Magna cum laude

With high honor 3.75 – 3.9499 GPA

Cum laude

While students may be provisionally recognized with honors at the time of the Commencement ceremony and in the Commencement program, official determination of honors occurs after the Commencement ceremony, once final semester grades have been submitted and calculated. The university diploma and an official final transcript are the only documents that officially award honors at the time the degree is conferred by the university.

Ceremonial Artifacts

UMBC CEREMONIAL MACE

UMBC did not have a mace of its own until 1986, 20 years after its founding. Commissioned by the Alumni Association, it was presented at the 17th Commencement ceremony on June 8, 1986, in honor of John W. Dorsey, who served as UMBC chancellor from 1977 to 1986. It is hand-carved mahogany with a solid brass seal, and was crafted by local artist Charles Strauss. It is carried by the Grand Marshal, who is the current president of the Faculty Senate.

UMBC CEREMONIAL BATONS

The Commencement batons, carried by the Students’, Faculty, Staff, and Graduate School Marshals, are gifts from the Alumni Association in honor of UMBC’s 40th anniversary. They are constructed of walnut, with the UMBC seal in brass on the top.

Land Acknowledgement Statement

UMBC was established upon the land of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples. Over time, citizens of many more Indigenous nations have come to reside in this region. We humbly offer our respect to all past, present, and future Indigenous people connected to this place.

Undergraduate Students Invited to Membership for Academic Excellence

Program and Diplomas

Attendance at the university’s Commencement ceremony is voluntary. This program lists the names of degree candidates who have applied for graduation and have met all eligibility requirements. A degree candidate who did not submit their application for graduation prior to the posted deadline may not be listed in this program. The university reserves the right to add or withdraw names from this program prior to printing. The list of degree candidates appearing in this program or in attendance at the Commencement ceremony does not signify that a degree has been, or will be, conferred. Official graduation determination occurs after the Commencement ceremony and includes final semester grades. The university diploma and an official transcript are the only documents providing authentic testimony to the conferring of a degree.

Diplomas are not distributed at the ceremony. Diplomas will be mailed to the student’s mailing address four to six weeks after degrees are awarded. Undergraduates who anticipate a change of address should verify/update their mailing address in their UMBC account.

Ph.D. and M.F.A. candidates who attend the ceremony will receive their diplomas at the ceremony.

For Ph.D. and M.F.A. candidates who do not attend the ceremony, diplomas will be mailed to the address listed on their diploma application after their degree is conferred on May 22, 2024.

Master’s degree candidates’ diplomas will be mailed to the address listed on their diploma application approximately eight weeks after the May 22, 2024, conferral date. Expect diplomas to be delivered toward the end of July 2024.

Alumni Association Program and Services

Founded in 1970, the UMBC Alumni Association is the official representative body for more than 90,000 alumni. All graduates are automatically members for life and there is no membership fee. The goal of the association is to serve the interests of alumni through educational, charitable, social, and cultural programs to involve alumni in the advancement and support of UMBC.

The association is governed by a Board of Directors who work with staff in the Office of Alumni Engagement to keep alumni connected and engaged with one another, current students, faculty and staff, and the university.
