Vision, virtue, and
Monsignor James P. Shea President of the University of Mary
TheUniversity of Mary was founded to serve the religious, academic, and cultural needs of the people, and we continue to exist for that same purpose. In 1959, and still today, that need was for excellent nurses and teachers, outstanding in their profession and formed in the service of truth. And for those outside of our university, that may be all they see: our therapists in their clinics, our counselors in their schools, our engineers in their firms, continuing to serve the needs of the people of our region and beyond.
But here on Mary’s campus, we see much more. We see our students every day, and we see their need — a need for education and for career prospects, yes, but also a need for friendship, a need for challenge and for a renewal of their minds. And we exist to serve these needs, too.
Early in my years as president of the University of Mary, we launched Vision 2030, our strategic plan for education and the fruit of long labors and grand dreams. We were beginning to predict a period of tremendous growth, and we were also noticing a growing need: a need for
infrastructure, yes; a need for sustainable enrollment and program expansion, yes. But also a need for healing, a need for life.
This need was on my mind and heart in a particular way early this spring, when we broke ground on our new athletics complex. In the fall of 2027, we will have brand-new, innovative facilities that will quickly fill with vitality and memory, like a second home to many of our students. It is my hope, too, that this quickly becomes a place of deep healing: for our scholar athletes to heal and grow in strength after an injury, for the students in our Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences to bring together isolated fields of study into a community of learning and service, and for all of our students from this, the loneliest generation, to heal that pernicious wound that undermines and erodes deep, meaningful relationships.
I have for many years now worked with young people, first as a pastor and a teacher around Western North Dakota before becoming president of the university, and I have seen in them so often a confusion and a discontent with the world’s answers to the questions of the human heart. But I also know that they harbor a great yearning to find and savor what is true, what is good, what is beautiful. Students come here from Las Vegas or Florida, not realizing that they long for a challenge to greatness, that the secret restlessness in their hearts can be soothed by a life of virtue. The world marches on — to school, to a degree, to a career, living for the weekend or for a promotion — but we want much more for our students. We strive to heal their vision, to teach them to see and strive after virtue not based on achievement or pressure, but based on a desire for the good.
We want much more for our students. We strive to heal their vision, to teach them to see and strive after virtue not based on achievement or pressure, but based on a desire for the good.
And so we continue to gratefully ask for help and prayers from our friends and donors; we joyfully enter into the two year headache of construction in the heart of our campus because of the hope we have for our students: that during their time here, they will experience this healing. We hope that they go forth from us knowing that our words were not empty, knowing how we pray for them and how we are proud of them. And I hope, dear alumni, that you also received healing during your time with us, and that you continue to know of my prayers for you, my great pride in your own gift of self. May God bless each of you!

A Career at Mary with Patricia McWilliams
Providential Beginnings
In 1999, Patricia (Pattie) McWilliams was starting something new. She had worked for several years as a guidance counselor at St. Mary’s Central High School, where she had graduated in 1977. But at a time when school leadership was changing, Pattie thought it’d be a good time for her to try something different. She soon found a job with a local public school district, and she was excited to begin, but something
didn’t feel right. “It didn’t have community,” Pattie says. She realized that her new environment didn’t have the qualities she had grown to love about St. Mary’s. At her new job, she says, “Nobody knew me, I didn’t know anybody, and I felt so lost.”
Providentially, when Pattie was feeling the most lost, she received a call from Neal Kalberer, then vice president for public affairs at the University of Mary, who was looking to fill a role in distance education. Pattie applied, and shortly after, was offered the job. After starting with the school district, she pivoted again — this time,
however, the change stuck. At Mary, Pattie found the close-knit community she’d been desiring all along. “The minute I stepped on campus,” she says, “it felt like home.”
Watching Campus Transform
And it’s been home for Pattie for over 25 years. Although her job duties have changed as Mary has grown and coworkers have come and gone, Pattie says there are some constants: “The Benedictine values have never changed,” she says, “and they never will.” They’ve become a guiding light for Pattie while things have slowly shifted and grown around her. When she first
Patricia (Pattie) McWilliams has trained several of her dogs, including the two pictured, to serve as therapy pets for people of the Bismarck-Mandan community.
started at Mary, Pattie and fellow Success Advisor Kris Kramer were responsible for traveling to towns across western North Dakota — Minot, Newtown, Dickinson, Fort Yates, and beyond — to bring an authentic University of Mary education to adult students in those communities. Their program allowed students to receive a four-year business degree without having to uproot their lives and move to Bismarck. This was an unprecedented initiative at the time, and it required a lot of participation from university leadership. Pattie would often hit the road with Sister Thomas Welder, then president, and Dr. Harold (“Doc”) Miller, chairman of the board, while working to educate Mary’s satellite students. Pattie remembers being nervous while she transported such “precious cargo,” but she treasures the memories of many hours on the road together with such amazing people.
As online education replaced Mary’s ‘on-the-road’ efforts, Pattie has found herself working on-campus more with both online and traditional students, playing the “crossword puzzle,” as she calls it, of ensuring all the students in her care are succeeding in their courses and on track to graduate. Today, the advising team at Mary has grown to include several dedicated, fulltime staff and involves multiple departments from admissions to enrollment. “Our operation is a lot like customer service,” Pattie says, “because we want to make sure all of our students are happy and able to get answers to the questions they have.” It works, she says, “because the people helping students at the University of Mary are like a big family; they genuinely want students to succeed, and we all embrace our own strengths and weaknesses.” Sometimes, Pattie says, “I don’t meet a student in person until commencement because they’re an online student.” But if everything goes according to plan, that student will feel just as welcomed and just as much a part
of the University of Mary as someone who lived on campus for four years.
The Next Chapter
Like any good chapter of life, Pattie says she’ll be closing the book on her time at Mary soon. As she approaches retirement in the spring of 2026, she’s left with gratitude and appreciation for her time here at the campus on the hill.
“The University of Mary,” she says, “is a place that allows people to grow if they want to grow, personally, spiritually, or professionally.” And the trust that exists between people here? Unshakeable, according to Pattie. Some people struggle with the thought of transitioning from professional life to retirement, but not Pattie. A lifelong animal lover, Pattie won’t have any trouble keeping busy in retirement. She and her husband, Bert, run a 300-ewe sheep operation — the oldest contiguous Hampshire-bred flock in the United States — at their
ranch just east of Lincoln, North Dakota. She also raises six horses and twelve dogs, three of which are certified therapy dogs. She treasures the times she’s been able to bring her therapy dogs to visit with people, young or old, who need a bit of support. Her work with her animals fills her schedule, certainly, but they also enrich her life: raising animals and living on a farm “teaches you to be strong,” Pattie says. “That’s one thing our leadership at Mary knows a lot about.”
In the end, it’s impossible for Pattie to pinpoint just a single favorite memory from her time at Mary. Rather, she’ll have a daily reminder of her love of the university. At her home, just at the bottom of Mary’s prairie bluff, Pattie’s able to see the Bell Banner in all its glory. “I can’t wait to sip my morning coffee and look up at the banner and hear the bells. It will bring me so much comfort and joy.” And she’s not worried about leaving on her last day. “No one ever truly leaves this place,” she says. “It stays with them forever.”
Pattie McWilliams says the guiding theme of her time at the University of Mary has been a strong sense of community and commitment to the Benedictine values.
Passion, Performance, and
Physical Therapy
Megin Sabo John’s passion for the performing arts opened the door to a career in physical therapy and later gave her the opportunity to serve with USA Gymnastics.
In2008, Megin Sabo John, ’11, arrived at the doorstep of the University of Mary from Portland, Oregon, after driving across the country in her little car to join this growing university where she knew she would be seen and cared for. When reflecting on the application and interview process, Sabo John said, “They actually read my essay. They asked me questions about who I was. It was a much more personal experience than at other schools.”
It was this personal encounter that ignited her career. Upon earning her doctorate in physical therapy from Mary, she and her husband, Robert “Bobby” John, moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Sabo John joined the Minnesota Dance Medicine Foundation. In her involvement there and in her work as the primary therapist
for the James Sewell Ballet, she quickly perceived a need, in the Minneapolis area and nationwide, for excellent dance medicine that is both accessible and affordable. With her previous experience in massage therapy and her passion for the performing arts, she was uniquely positioned to serve this need, both by ministering to her patients and by broadening the understanding of dance medicine within the field of sports medicine.
In addition to her full time work with James Sewell, Sabo John volunteered at a pro-bono clinic in downtown Minneapolis, housed in the Cowles Center for Performing Arts, where the doors were open to any dancer seeking rehabilitation and education. “We’d have kids come from Ames, Iowa, and drive all the way up with their parents because they were looking for someone that understood dance medicine,” she shared.
In efforts to offer education and broaden access to dance medicine, the Minnesota Dance Medicine Foundation hosted a variety of medical conferences for health professionals, as well as conferences for dancers. By the end of her tenure in Minneapolis, Sabo John had earned the role of co-director, served many times as the conference chair, and worked in multiple clinics, extending her expertise to as many as she could.
From Ballet to Team USA
In 2020, Sabo John began working with Suni Lee, a future two-time Olympian. A recommendation from Suni Lee gave Sabo John the opportunity to join USA Gymnastics. This was a unique route to the highly esteemed, national organization; often, athletic trainers and other health professionals volunteer for the United
States Olympic & Paralympic Committee in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and assist National Governing Bodies by covering local events before receiving an opportunity for employment with Team USA.
“Gymnastics wasn’t my passion to begin with. It was dance,” said Sabo John. “But my understanding of performing arts medicine and what it takes to perform at a high level is a little bit different than other sports, so it was kind of a natural fit.”
Sabo John has since embraced the artistic world of gymnastics. She treats athletes in tumbling, trampoline, and acrobatics, and has covered all the disciplines that fall under the umbrella of gymnastics. She has traveled to several different countries for competitions, and she remains a contracted employee for USA Gymnastics.
After 12 years in Minneapolis, Sabo John and her husband moved to Maui, Hawaii, a significant change of pace from the bustling life and demanding schedule she had held in
Minnesota. As she gratefully spends more time with her family and friends — including scuba diving with Bobby — Sabo John continues her joyful work as a physical therapist.
Bringing It Full-Circle:
Back to the Classroom.
A new joy in Megin’s life has been serving as an education coordinator for four clinics, developing individual education plans for other therapists. She has also stepped into the role of teaching, sharing her vast knowledge in the classroom and mentoring other therapists at a range of levels: some are new graduates eager to learn new practices, while others are looking to invest in specific learning opportunities and share their expertise as they approach retirement.
“The teaching aspect is really fun,” she said, and she has a wealth of experience in physical therapy
practice to draw from. Sabo John recalled that during the last portion of her time in Minneapolis, she treated a large number of surgical patients while working with Twin Cities Orthopedics. Her specialty in treating foot and ankle pathology, sometimes seeing 15 foot and ankle surgical patients at once, allowed her to refine and develop reliable and effective practices that she now has the opportunity to share with other therapists as they continue their education. In addition to teaching continuing education courses in Hawaii, Sabo John will soon be teaching webinars for Athletico, a national physical therapy company.
This time around, Sabo John didn’t seek out dance medicine specifically, but a local dance studio reached out to her to work

with their dancers. She smiles and shares, “It feels like the beginning of my career again.” After Sabo John’s first few visits to the studio, dancers have started to come to see her in the clinic regularly.
When asked what advice she would give new therapists just beginning their career, Sabo John fervently responded, “Go out and get it. You have to seek it out.” Looking back on Sabo John’s career so far, she practices what she preaches. Opportunity
has graced her physical therapy practice, but it followed her dedication: hours spent in travel, in ardent service, in pursuing her passion. “Do something quarterly for your community that helps build that rapport — a base for whatever you’re interested in,” she urged.
She was quick to share where her motivation for servant leadership was sparked. “I think we learned that at the University of Mary with the free clinic
and doing volunteer work. It was instilled throughout our program with the base of being a good community member and following the Benedictine values.”
Megin Sabo John strives to live the Benedictine values and continues to embrace adventure. She emphasized, “Being a physical therapist has been the best choice. I truly love this career and can’t think of a better way to serve my community and enjoy my job.”

From Vision to Reality
Collaboration and Integration at the New Marauders Athletics Complex
There’s a buzz on University of Mary’s campus. Momentum is growing for the Marauders’ new athletics complex, slated for completion in the fall of 2027 and primed to transform the experience of Mary’s scholar-athletes, of all its students, and of the Bismarck-Mandan community. With an official groundbreaking ceremony held in April and architectural renderings that look more realistic with each iteration, this project, which will be over 15 years in the making when completed, is an integral part of the University of Mary’s Vision 2030 Strategic Plan and signals a powerful investment in the future of Marauders athletics. More than that, however, the athletics complex is an incredible commitment to the identity of the University of Mary: it seeks to foster the development of the whole person and serve as a uniquely collaborative innovation between the athletic department and the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences.
Dr. Mary Dockter, dean of the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences, and Marcus Wagner, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, are on the same page. Both emphasize the integration of athletics and academics as a primary cornerstone for the facility, and both point to the athletics complex project as a shining example of the benefits that come from working at a place like the University of Mary: the university’s Benedictine values are at the core of every decision — even for an athletics complex, and even for the smallest details, like the style of turf and the positioning of windows. The complex will provide new homes for Marauders football, soccer, softball, and track and field, but the overarching vision for the complex is that every University of Mary student — and the Bismarck-Mandan community at large — will benefit from this project.
Take the facility’s dual-use spaces, for example. On a normal day, the upper level of the football stadium will serve as classroom space, but on football game days, these spaces will transform into Division I-caliber game day suites for the university’s friends and benefactors. This highlights the
university’s commitment to being “good stewards of our resources,” says Dockter. Instead of designing spaces that are only used for a handful of days throughout the year, the facility will create spaces that can be used by a variety of groups, no matter what time of year it is. “The word we kept using was ‘flexible.’ We wondered: how can we make this the most flexible facility possible?” When it’s all said and done, Wagner says the facility will serve as a physical representation of the University of Mary’s identity. “This complex will be the University of Mary through and through,” he says. “We’re doing it in a UMary way — not to keep up with anybody, but to be best-in-class.”
Five-Star Features and Technology
This commitment to creating a best-inclass facility extends to every aspect of the complex. The primary features are well known: it will bring a premier football stadium and competition track and field facility to the University of Mary; it will bring a Game Day Plaza that will serve as a community hub for Marauders fans and students as they approach the stadium and enjoy a first-rate tailgating experience; and it will bring the largest air-supported dome in the state of North Dakota, which
will house Marauders soccer and softball teams and provide year-round turf space for the community. In addition, the complex will include a brand-new strength and conditioning facility, “roughly double the size of what we currently have,” according to Wagner, as well as state-of-the-art athletic training and sports medicine facilities. A physical therapist by training, Dockter says she’s particularly excited for the new biomechanics lab, which will house advanced force plate and motion analysis technology. And, Dockter says, in the new sports research facility, the lab will be proudly featured. “We didn’t want the biomechanics room to be hidden,” she says. “We want it to be a showcase room that highlights what our students and faculty are working on.”
training program will practice taping and treatment techniques on injured or in-pain players. The goal, according to Dockter, is determining how the different programs in the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences can work together interprofessionally and interdepartmentally, whether it’s physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, exercise physiology, kinesiology, or biomechanics. “We want to be involved in every aspect,” Dockter says, “whether it’s research, rehab, prevention, or strength and conditioning of our athletes.”
Into the Future: The Marauders Legacy
Facilities like the biomechanics lab and the sports medicine and strength and conditioning areas will allow Mary’s expert faculty — some of whom are nationally recognized specialists in their field — to take a collaborative, hands-on approach to making sure Marauders scholar-athletes are performing at their healthiest. “When you look at the great faculty we have,” Dockter says, “why would we not use them to help out with the sports medicine of our scholarathletes?” This integrated relationship between academics and athletics allows also for students in the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences to practice their newly learned skills on athletes. Students in the biomechanics program will be able to take portable motiontracking camera equipment directly onto the turf inside the indoor air-supported dome and analyze the running, throwing, hitting, or kicking techniques of Marauders scholar-athletes. Similarly, students in the athletic
As the plans for the project have been finalized, both Wagner and Dockter acknowledge that the decision-making process has been challenging at times, especially when it’s come to balancing budgets and choosing which features to prioritize. Navigating the journey of refining and enhancing these plans, however, has led to a renewed ability for the leaders involved to stay true to the university’s overarching goals. When difficult decisions had to be made on a particular aspect of the complex, Wagner says, “We kept coming back to these questions: does this speak to who we are as a university, and does it enhance the scholar-athlete experience?” He says that these questions guided the team every day as they made decisions, big and small.
Although the athletics complex will live on the campus of the University of Mary, it will benefit the entire community and reflect the university’s mission to serve the needs of the people of this region and beyond. The complex’s air-supported dome will offer much-needed indoor space to many local and regional organizations, athletes, and families. “Our community’s youth baseball, youth soccer, and youth softball programs all need additional programmable green space,” Wagner says. “Offering this to these and other local groups speaks to the exact

mission of our university and, like everything we do, is focused on how we can better serve those around us.” Additionally, at a time when athletics departments across the country are racing to create new, bigger, and better athletic facilities amidst the tumultuous landscape of intercollegiate athletics, Wagner points to Mary’s Greatness Through Virtue — the athletic department’s strategic plan — as the antidote. The effort to produce men and women of virtue serves as a constant anchor for the creation
of these facilities, and Wagner highlights that, even through the building of physical spaces like the ones in the athletics complex, the University of Mary will develop greater virtue in its scholar-athletes.
Above all, Dockter and Wagner hope that the new athletics complex serves as a beacon for the University of Mary for decades to come. They’ve been intentionally thoughtful about every decision, so that, 30 years from now, the facilities are just as impactful as they will be when newly built. “We want the legacy
of this complex to be ‘home,’” Wagner says. When alumni return to campus after years away, or when recruits step foot on campus for the first time, or when current scholarathletes wake up bleary-eyed for a morning practice, Wagner hopes that the athletics complex will be a place where everyone feels like they belong. “Athletics at the University of Mary transforms lives,” Wagner says. “At the end of the day, how many souls can we positively impact with the building of this facility? That’s our ultimate goal.”
Excitement for the new Marauders Athletics Complex is palpable. Hundreds of University of Mary scholar-athletes attended the groundbreaking ceremony to show their enthusiasm.

AN UNEXPECTEDGreatness
WhenLas Vegas native Lex Harper (’24) arrived on the campus of the University of Mary, she expected a culture shock. The idea of attending a Catholic school was unnerving for her, and she planned on transferring to another school after a year or two — she certainly did not plan to join the Catholic Church.
Harper came to the University of Mary to compete on the Marauders volleyball team.
A few friends from home were already attending Mary, so despite her qualms, she committed. “I just jumped in and hoped for the best. I always thought, if I hated it, I could transfer out,” shared Harper.
The leap of faith brought about growth and change for Harper — and a grace-filled conversion — but it wasn’t instantaneous.
The first Mass she attended was during the first couple weeks of school for all scholar-athletes to receive a blessing.
“I was so lost,” Harper reflected on the experience. “I was confused, and I had questions.” She had many preconceived
notions about Catholics: strict, not fun, and judgmental, and she did not imagine meeting any of her best friends at Mary.
Harper shared that she only spent time with her teammates and other scholar-athletes during her freshman year. “I avoided the idea of meeting great Catholic people that were going to help me be a good person,” she said. But God knew Harper’s heart. He placed a great Catholic person and future best friend in the volleyball locker room.
Reyna Isenbart, ’24, joined UMary’s volleyball team in the second semester of Harper’s freshman year, after transferring from a junior college. Sharing her faith and the love of Christ boldly, as Harper said, Isenbart “pushed me to be a better person every day”. Isenbart often invited Harper to hang out with friends and go rock-climbing. Harper shared she was resistant to the invitations for months. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, can you please leave me alone?’”
The Turning Point
About a year after meeting (and fighting with) Isenbart, Harper began to encounter new difficulties. She shared, “I did not know who I was or who I was supposed to be. I questioned myself and my purpose in life every single day.”
Battling isolation, injury, and questioning her identity, Harper knew something was missing.
Harper pinpointed that the beginning of her conversion was “seeing how happy and fulfilled Reyna was all the time.” When Isenbart’s presence was combined with courses like Virtue in Sport, Search for God, and Benedict: Yesterday and Today, Harper started to “learn more about what it truly is that the Lord wants for us”.
Meanwhile, despite consistent rejection, Isenbart continued to extend invitations.
“Reyna pushed me to start going to Mass with her regularly,” shared Harper. Now, when questions and confusion troubled her, Harper had a team of people to turn to for answers, including Isenbart, FOCUS missionaries, scholar-athletes in Bible Study, faculty, coaches, and chaplains. “It was during this time in my life that I fell in love with the Catholic faith.”
Originally, Harper had felt like holiness was unattainable — especially for a collegiate athlete from Vegas living in the modern-day world. “Our chaplains do a really good job of meeting all the scholarathletes where they are and leading them to Jesus.” Harper says that the University of Mary changed the direction of her future because it gave her perspective and opened her eyes to the beauty of Catholicism.
“Today I am joyfully Catholic… words that I never thought would come out of my mouth,” said Harper. After completing Core Catholicism classes, which fulfill requirements for OCIA and entrance into the Catholic Church, Harper joined the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Mass in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel on March 30, 2024. She recalled the event, “I could not stop smiling and I did not
Reyna Isenbart and Lex Harper’s relationship started as teammates. Now, Harper smiles with joy next to her confirmation sponsor, godmother, and best friend.
know why. About midway through Mass, Father Bouck invited me to come forward for my Baptism, and he welcomed me into the Catholic Church. As I turned around, I saw the whole chapel — filled wall to wall — full of joy and applause, and I had never felt so at home.”
A New Sense of Home Home has changed for Harper. While she still flies to Vegas to spend time with her mom and friends, she longs to stay in the upper Midwest and remain immersed in the traditions of the Catholic Church. “I want to live in North Dakota or Minnesota for the rest of my life. I really do like it here. I feel like it is a great place to raise a family and be able to see the rest of the world.”
There is no doubt that North Dakota and the University of Mary has left quite an impression on the Nevada native.
“There’s North Dakota nice, but I feel like it’s amplified at Mary.” Harper raved about the warmth of welcome she felt on campus — even during the bitter winter months. “It showed me there are so many great people living virtuous lives.”
The theme of virtue echoed in Harper’s experience at Mary. As part of the Greatness Through Virtue strategic plan, Harper completed three of the four Virtue in Sport
classes. When reflecting on the program, Harper said, “Greatness Through Virtue is putting scholar-athletes in a position to not only live our lives through great virtue, but to lead others virtuously too.”
Harper is no stranger to leadership. During her final volleyball season with the Marauders, Harper led the team with 86 total blocks, averaging nearly one block every set. These season-best statistics placed her at fourth all-time in total blocks and third all-time blocks per set average. Harper etched her name into Marauders history in just three seasons. She has continued on in her studies, pursuing a master’s degree in criminal justice studies and aspiring to work in law enforcement as a detective, but she remains deeply grateful to Mary because she was truly transformed during her time here.
Las Vegas native, Lex Harper, found a home at the University of Mary and etched her name into Marauders history in just three seasons.

Warmth of Welcome
Pillar IV of Phase II: Welcome Center
At the heart of the University of Mary experience lies the Benedictine value of hospitality — a value that fundamentally shapes who we are and what we aim to accomplish. Plans for the south campus Welcome Center represent this commitment to hospitality in physical form. It’s designed specifically to greet each visitor with the distinctive warmth that characterizes our community. Beyond serving as the entry point where we fulfill our pledge to receive all as Christ, this new facility will centralize key services for the entire university family. Past graduates connecting through alumni relations, current students seeking financial aid assistance, and prospective students exploring admissions options will all find their respective support hubs housed within this welcoming space.
