Hands. Long-fingered hands. Are they weaving or playing? Maybe they do both. For the Pythagoreans, the entire universe was held together by invisible threads that produced a secret harmony, and human destiny was designed by the Fates who wove and modulated song at the same time.

There is music hidden in fabric and, perhaps, in everything created by the human hand.

For this reason, the works that Antonio Marras composes - from his clothes to his installations, such as the one created for the Italian Cultural Institute, New York - are musical compositions. We must listen to them, not just look at them. The threads, colors, and materials intertwine in a visible way to remind us of the movements, jolts, variations, and sudden turns of a sound discourse. Performance is inherent in the installation.

Every art is silent if there are no eyes and hands, bodies and voices that welcome it and know how to embody its logic, so different from that of the principle of non-contradiction, which apparently inspires Western thought. Aporia, oxymoron, paradox: forms of an art that has, in itself, a sacred dimension where opposites meet and generate a discourse in which silence is essential to sound, disorder to order, and black to color; tangle in the thread that unwinds.

Mani. Mani dalle lunghe dita. Stanno tessendo o suonando? Forse fanno l’una cosa e l’altra. Per i pitagorici l’universo intero era tenuto insieme da invisibili fili che producevano una segreta armonia. E il destino umano era disegnato dalle Parche che tessevano e modulavano il canto nello stesso momento: “Altre tre donne sedevano in cerchio a uguale distanza, ciascuna sul proprio trono: erano le Moire figlie di Ananke, Lachesi, Cloto e Atropo, vestite di bianco e col capo cinto di bende; sull’armonia delle Sirene Lachesi cantava il passato, Cloto il presente, Atropo il futuro” (Repubblica X,135,34).

Anche la Silvia di Leopardi tesseva e cantava insieme: “Sonavan le quiete / stanze, e le vie dintorno, / al tuo perpetuo canto, / allor che all’opre femminili intenta / sedevi, assai contenta / di quel vago avvenir che in mente avevi”.

C’è una musica nascosta nei tessuti e forse in ogni cosa creata dalla mano umana.

Per questo le opere che Antonio Marras compone - a partire dai vestiti fino alle istallazioni come quella creata per l’Istituto di Cultura di New York – sono composizioni musicali. Dobbiamo ascoltarle, non solo guardarle. I fili, i colori, i materiali si intrecciano in modo visibile per richiamarci ai movimenti, ai sussulti, alle variazioni, alle improvvise svolte di un discorso sonoro. La performance è dunque insita nell’istallazione, che è in se stessa esecuzione.

Naturalmente lo spettatore/ascoltatore ha una funzione cruciale in questo processo, e si potrebbe ricordare quanto Cristo dice ai discepoli, sottolineando il fatto che molti “pur vedendo non vedono, e pur udendo non odono e non comprendono ... Ma beati i vostri occhi perché vedono e i vostri orecchi perché sentono” (Vangelo secondo Matteo, XIII).

Giustamente quest’anno si è pensato di dedicare al tema della Performance la “Giornata del Contemporaneo promossa dall’AMACI (Associazione dei Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani) e realizzata con il sostegno della Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea del MiC e con la collaborazione della Direzione Generale per la Promozione del Sistema Paese del MAECI. La scelta di un’artista come Antonio Marras nasce proprio dall’idea che performance e opera oggi siano intimamente fuse e sia impossibile separare l’una dall’altra.

Ma a questo primo livello l’istallazione presso l’Istituto di Cultura ne fa seguire un altro, di cui sempe Marras è stato creatore e regista, con l’insostituibile collaborazione e cura di Valeria Orani. Performance che trova in altra performance il proprio orizzonte di nascita e d’ascolto.

Perché ogni arte è muta se non vi sono occhi e mani, corpi e voci che l’accolgono e ne sanno incarnare la logica, così diversa da quella del principio di non contraddizione, cui apparentermente s’ispira il pensiero occidentale. Aporia, ossimoro, paradosso: forme di un’arte che ha in sé una dimensione sacra in cui gli opposti s’incontrano e generano un discorso in cui il silenzio è essenziale al suono, il disordine all’ordine, il nero al colore, il groviglio al filo che si snoda.

Scrive Rainer Maria Rilke nel Libro d’ore: “Giro attorno a Dio, all’antica torre, giro da millenni; e ancora non so se sono un falco, una tempesta o un grande canto.

La mia vita non è quest’ora ripida che mi vedi scalare in fretta.

Sono un albero davanti all’orizzonte, una delle mie molte bocche, e la prima a chiudersi.”

Tutto ritorna, per Antonio Marras, come in un copione letterario, teatrale, qualcosa che non corrisponde a un’idea di morte. E se non c’è fine vera, non ci può nemmeno essere inizio. E non c’è più il tempo presente, come ricordava Rilke, c’è solo uno scorrere, tra passato e futuro, dunque un’opera-fiume la sua, non si risolve una volta per tutte, ma che cambia trama e forma ogni volta che viene ricollocata, dunque mai volutamente risolta, compiuta. Esaurita allo sguardo. Vive in un caos ordinato come in un fermo-immagine, pronta a riconfigurarsi. Un’opera, quella di Antonio Marras, che, come la vita, è provvisoria, instabile, poetica e che ha bisogno dello sguardo e dell’attenzione dell’altro per esistere.

Antonio Marras uses many languages and artistic means: from installation to photography, from image projection to ceramics, from the change of scale of representation to collage, from performance to “objet trouvè”.

Su per le antiche scale / Up the ancient stairs is a work climbing the walls of the stairs of the Palazzo of the Italian Cultural Institute in New York.

Marras’ work traces the lines of a continuum between past and future. Between here and there. Between inside and outside, in a tense dialogue through walls, stairs, threads, and ceramics. It brings out fragments, ‘’pieces of ceramics’’ that Antonio Marras uses to create a unique, unrepeatable work of art, a conversation with space.

It’s a sort of “drawing” on the wall embodied in threads and ceramics. We can perceive a logic of beauty through the chaos that suggests stopping between the folds of a line, silently tracing a map of distant and unknown universes. Marras’ poetics invites us to walk like nomads on the shaky grounds of reason; his poetics can cut, in any direction, the orthogonal planes of logic. In reality, Marras builds a crossing that unites and dissolves the grooves of the forms created, formed, and fixed, eliminating any static form.

Marras’ works always develops in multiple planes since none could embrace chaos where materials surrender their shape to the artist. A state of tension, a poetic declaration in which the artist, his work, and the spectator have a shared role and destiny. The moment of here and now, the moment in which void, interval, waiting, rising, and the descending underline a distance. The distance through which it is possible to see the depth, the absence, what does not appear.

Rainer Maria Rilke writes in The Book of Hours: “I circle around God, around the age-old tower, I’ve been circling for millennia; and still I don’t know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a sovereign song?

My life is not this steeply sloping hour in which you see me hurrying.

Much stands behind me; I stand before it like a tree; I am only one of my many mouths, and at that, the one that will be still the soonest.

For Antonio Marras, everything returns as in a literary, theatrical script, something that does not correspond to the idea of death. And if there is no natural end, there can be no beginning either. And there is no longer the present time; as Rilke recalled, there is only a flow between past and future. It’s a work that flows like a river. It’s not resolved once and for all but changes every texture and form every time it’s relocated. It’s never deliberately fixed, accomplished, and exhausted to the eye. It lives in orderly chaos as in a still image, ready to reconfigure itself.

Molti sono i linguaggi e i mezzi artistici utilizzati da Antonio Marras: dall’installazione alla fotografia, dalla proiezione d’immagini alla ceramica, dal cambiamento di scala di rappresentazione fino al collage, dalla performance all’objet trouvè.

Su per le antiche scale è un’opera arrampicata sulle pareti delle scale del Palazzo dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di New York.

In quest’opera Marras traccia le linee di un continuum tra passato e futuro, tra qui e là, tra dentro e fuori, in un dialogo teso tra pareti, scale, fili e ceramiche, un dialogo teso che fa emergere le proprie frammentazioni, ‘pezzi’ di ceramiche che risultano essere strumenti di cui Antonio Marras si serve per realizzare un’opera d’arte unica, irripetibile, perché ‘composta’ in dialogo con lo spazio.

Quello realizzata da Marras è una sorta di ‘disegno’ sulla parete che improvvisamente si incarna in fili e ceramiche… in un processo, in cui è possibile rintracciare lì, nel caos, una logica della bellezza che suggerisce di non indietreggiare, suggerisce di fermarsi tra le pieghe di una linea che silenziosamente traccia una mappa di universi lontani e sconosciuti. È, quella di Marras, una poetica che invita a camminare come nomadi sui terreni instabili della ragione e che può tagliare, in qualsiasi direzione, i piani ortogonali della logica. In realtà, Marras costruisce un attraversamento che unisce e scioglie i solchi delle forme che si creano, si formano e si fissano, ma che, comunque, riescono a eliminare qualsiasi forma di staticità.

Marras suppone sempre, nelle sue opere, una molteplicità di piani, poiché nessuno di essi potrebbe da solo abbracciare il caos, quel caos in cui i materiali si lasciano piegare insieme. Uno stato di tensione… una dichiarazione poetica in cui artista, opera e spettatore hanno un ruolo e destino comuni, l’attimo del qui e ora, e in cui il vuoto, l’intervallo, l’attesa, il salire e lo scendere, marcano una distanza attraverso la quale è possibile vedere la profondità, quella profondità che forma l’assenza, quel che non appare.

Su per le antiche scale nasce come un ‘opera poliedrica, tridimensionale e materica.

Legno e ceramica, oggetti uniti da fili neri che imprigionano e trattengono le forme come il ragno cattura la preda nella sua rete, l’accoglie, l’avvolge e la fa sua. Se ne appropria ma non la distrugge in questo caso, anzi la tutela e protegge.

La ceramica nella forma di mani tentacolari come meduse e i fili ci passano attraverso per riaccordarsi ad altre ceramiche come i libri o listelli. I fili segnano il muro bianco di strade perpendicolari, parallele e divergenti. Si creano angoli e incastri, incontri e proseguimenti per arrivare dove tutto comincia. Un racconto di memorie impigliate nella trama, trattenute nei nodi del filo, come le memorie di vite che migrano, prendono nuove forme, ma non perdono il legame con le proprie radici. È un racconto atavico che parla di percorsi, viaggi, sofferenze e strazi. È un racconto che conosce bene chi partendo è diventato “Isola”. È la voglia di andare restando. È la voglia di esplorare, indagare, cercare. È il desiderio di tornare. È la voglia di sapere cosa c’è aldilà del mare pur portando con sé “su connottu” quello imparato dai grandi vecchi. Quello che ognuno di noi si porta dentro. Noi che abbiamo radici ma che non siamo alberi e perciò vaghiamo e vaghiamo sempre carichi di tutte le nostre cose per non dimenticare. Perché siamo testimoni del tempo.

Del resto è Maria Lai che diceva “L’uomo ha bisogno di mettere insieme il visibile e l’invisibile perciò elabora fiabe, miti, leggende, feste, canti, arte” (1999).

An ancient land rich in knowledge and legends and crafts that converge and intertwine in Antonio Marras’ work.

Su per le antiche scale is a work climbing up the staircase wall of the Italian Cultural Institute in New York (686 Park Ave, New York, NY 10065, United States) made of ceramic, threads, and woods created to emphasize, underline, enhance the stairs of the famous building.

The rigor of the loom, a rational and orderly tool, is an essential tool in last century Sardinian houses. The passionate neurasthenia of ceramic is crafted by instinctive and unrestrained hands that move as if guided by a distracted god.

Oxymoron and apory are the key elements of Marras’ work and part of this installation.

An orderly and bright layout contrasts with the anarchic and undisciplined dimension of the elements incorporated. There is a dissimilitude between discipline, rhythm, and harmony in contrast with the passion and instinct that the scattered objects communicate.

Antonio Marras is attached to the loom, a tool preserved in the history of his land and, by the legacy with the Sardinian artist Maria Lai, a dear friend, a muse, and a protector.

The love for myth and story combines with craftsmanship, for the warm irregularity of everything handmade.

It’s not surprising. The fairy tale, story, and myth are all born from craftsmanship. In traditional societies, they originate from the need to speak and listen, fill with stories the long evenings spent weaving, sewing or embroidering.

Su per le antiche scale is a multifaceted, three-dimensional, and material work. Wood and ceramic are objects bound by black threads that imprison and hold shapes like a spider that captures its prey in its web, wraps it. It appropriates it but does not destroy it; quite the opposite, it preserves and protects it.

Ceramic is shaped as sprawling hands like jellyfish with threads joining other pieces of ceramics in the shape of books or strips. The threads draw maps on the white wall like perpendicular, parallel or diverging streets. Angles and intersections create encounters and continuations to get to where it all begins.

It’s the tale of memories entangled in the plot, held in the knots of the thread, like the memories of lives that migrate, take on new forms but do not lose the ties with their roots. It’s an ancestral tale that speaks of paths, journeys, sufferings, and torment. It’s a story known well to those who left and have become an “island.” It’s the desire to go and to stay at the same time. It’s the desire to explore, investigate, search. It’s the desire to return.

It’s the desire to learn what’s beyond the sea yet bringing with us “su connottu” what has been learned from the great old men, what each of us holds inside. We who have roots but are not trees, so we keep wandering laden with all our things so that we don’t forget because we are witnesses of the time.

After all, Maria Lai used to say:” Man needs to put together the visible and the invisible, that’s why he creates tales, myths, legends, feasts, celebrations, songs, art “(1999)

UP THE ANCIENT STAIRS

SU PER LE ANTICHE SCALE Opera site-specific legno, ceramiche e fili.

C’è una terra antica depositaria di tradizioni, cultura e valori dietro l’opera site specific Su per le antiche scale. Una terra antica, ricca di saperi e di leggende che convergono, intrecciandosi, nel lavoro di Antonio Marras.

Su per le antiche scale è un’opera arrampicata sulla parete della scala del Palazzo dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di New York, (686 Park Ave, New York, NY 10065, Stati Uniti). È un lavoro realizzato in ceramica, fili e legni pensato in accordo allo spazio. Creato per enfatizzare, sottolineare, valorizzare le scale del famoso edificio, l’opera racchiude i key elements caratteristici di Marras: l’ossimoro e l’aporia.

Il rigore del telaio, strumento razionale e ordinato, utensile essenziale nella Sardegna del secolo scorso, e la nevrastenia passionale della ceramica lavorata con mani che vagano istintive e senza freni come guidate da un dio distratto.

Un tracciato ordinato e solare si contrappone alla dimensione anarchica e indisciplinata degli elementi incorporati. Il progetto è disciplinato, ritmico e armonico in netto contrasto con la gestualità passionale e istintiva degli oggetti parlanti.

Il telaio è argomento caro ad Antonio Marras, tenuto vivo dalla storia della sua Terra e dall’eredità dell’artista Maria Lai, cara amica, musa e protettrice. L’amore per il mito e il racconto si unisce a quello per l’artigianato, per la calda irregolarità di ciò che è fatto a mano. Non c’è da stupirsene. La fiaba, il racconto, il mito, nascono dall’artigianato; la loro origine nelle società tradizionali si lega al bisogno di parlare e di ascoltare, di riempire di storie le lunghe serate trascorse a tessere, cucire o ricamare.

La performance ripercorre le tematiche già presenti nell’opera “Su per le antiche scale” dando vita al sentimento e alla forza delle azioni. Un percorso che è anche l’impossibilità di dare risposte precise ad un problema che si trova di fronte a due soluzioni, che per quanto opposte sembrano entrambe valide: radici e irrequietezza, attaccamento e necessità di allontanarsi. Sardo, Italiano, Europeo, Africano, Latino, Asiatico e cittadino del Mondo. Luce e ombra. Ordine e disordine. Corpo e spirito. È “Lacrime napulitane “la prima canzone che accompagna il faticoso viaggio dei due emigranti. Sono coperti da pesanti giacche di pelle che vestono ma non riscaldano, sono carichi di valigie legate con stoffa bianca strappata e annodata ma sono vuote. I legacci sono lenzuola, sono teli da cucina, sono parte del corredo di casa, materiale semplice ma prezioso. Unica dote di povere donne. E vanno gli uomini, attraverso l’Oceano, tra vicissitudine e prove di coraggio e di tenacia.a Trascinano funi ancorate a terra, tentano di strappare quelle radici che tanto male fanno e tanto forti sono. Si attorcigliano, si legano, si intrecciano, si rincorrono, si fanno spazio tra i grovigli della vita, del fato. Ma sono destinati a soffrire, “meschini, costretti a vivere in terre straniere”.

Si spogliano arrivati a Ellis Island mentre si sente in sottofondo “New York New York” in versione interrotta e frastagliata. Mettono tutti i loro averi su un pianoforte che continua ad emettere non più musica ma suoni come se sentisse il dolore e lo strazio dei newcomers, straniti e confusi. Si spogliano per rinascere, per diventare altro.

L’ultimo atto è “L’addio”. Addio da dove? Per dove?

Il sogno di andare restando.

December 6, 2021 The performance follows the same themes of Up the ancient stairs, giving life to the sentiment and strength of the actions.

A path that is also the impossibility of giving precise answers to a problem with two possible, although opposite, valid solutions: roots and restlessness, attachment, and the need to move away.

Sardinian, Italian, European, African, Latin, Asian, and citizen of the world. Light and shadow. Order and disorder. Body and spirit.

The first song accompanying the tiring journey of the two migrants is “Lacrime Napulitane” (Napulitane Tears).

They wear heavy leather jackets that cover them but do not keep them warm. They are loaded with suitcases tied with torn and knotted white cloth but are empty.

The ties are sheets; they are kitchen towels; they are part of the home kit, a simple but precious material. The only wedding gift of poor women. And men go, across the ocean, between vicissitudes and tests of courage and tenacity.

They drag ropes anchored to the ground; they try to tear off those roots that do so much harm and are so strong. They twist, bind, tangle, chase each other, make space among the knots of life, of fate.

But they are destined to suffer, “petty, forced to live in foreign lands.”

They take off their clothes once they land on Ellis Island, while in the background, you can hear “New York New York” playing. They put all their belongings on a piano that continues to play as if it did not feel the pain and agony of the newcomers, bewildered and confused. They undress to be reborn, to become something else.

The last act is “The farewell.” Goodbye from where? For where?

It’s the dream of going while staying.
