Fussy eaters

It’s natural to worry whether something is wrong when your child seems to lose their appetite, but 30% of children go through a fussy eating phase. This is often a normal part of growing up and, like teething and colic, it too will pass, so try not to get too frustrated.

Around the end of the first year, a child’s growth rate slows down. This might mean their appetite decreases whilst, simultaneously, they assert their authority and independence around their food choices. After the first year, children are actually programmed to refuse or spit out foods. Between the ages of one and two, a toddler will not gain much weight, in general around 2kg.

Setting good healthy eating patterns from the start will stand your child in good stead for the rest of their life. It is important to understand the food labels and limit your child’s intake of those with red and yellow labels which are rich in saturated fat, salt or sugar. Starchy foods will provide carbohydrates and B vitamins, with wholegrain ones being a great source of fibre. High protein foods also

contain vitamins and minerals such as iron that help the body grow. Dairy products help to keep bones and teeth healthy and fruit and vegetables provide vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre. A small amount of fat is an essential part of a balanced diet and helps the body to absorb vitamins A, D and E. A weekly diary noting the foods your child accepts or refuses, distractions and personal circumstances can help also.

Generally, a healthy child will follow an individual growth curve, which corresponds to their age, but each child grows differently, so do not compare your child’s growth chart with someone else. Being active and eating well gives nutrients to improve your child’s health, avoids them suffering from limited growth, increases their ability to learn, and prevents food phobias as well as diseases in their adulthood.

3 Have a routine and schedule three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and tea, with healthy snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon 3 Do not use food as a reward. Your child may start to think of sweets as good and vegetables as nasty. Instead, reward them with a trip to the park or promise to play a game with them 3 Eat together and set an example. Make it fun and do not talk just about eating 3 Give your child the same food as the rest of the family, but low in salt. Enjoy the mess and try finger foods and even cooking with them 3 Build on what they like and add healthy ingredients 3 Keep meal times short and after 30 minutes take the plate away whether it’s finished or not, without making a fuss 3 Your child may be a slow eater so be patient 3 Don’t give too many snacks or too much milk between meals 3 Do not let them fill up on drinks or snacks before a meal and always offer water first

Do not give up because this is just a phase and you are not alone. Very occasionally there might be an underlying problem that is contributing to a sudden loss of appetite and if you are concerned, ask your GP.

Tooth Brushing Tips

Tooth decay progresses more quickly in children than in adults, so it is vital to establish a good tooth brushing routine for children as early as possible. The reason why decay is so rapid in children is because baby teeth have thinner enamel than adult teeth.

Tooth decay and gum disease is prevented by cleaning well and eating healthily. Brushing teeth is an important part of good oral and overall health, especially for children, whose teeth and bones are still developing.

As soon as the first tooth appears brushing should start.

Baby teeth usually appear at around six months of age and all of the baby teeth should be visible by two years of age.

The first adult molars appear at around six years of age and this coincides with the start of the loss of baby teeth.

From the beginning use a toothbrush and toothpaste that is recommended for the particular age group of your child. Use a soft-bristled brush with a small amount of children’s toothpaste.

Gently but thoroughly brush on the inside, outside and tops of each of the child’s teeth, as well as the tongue (to remove bacteria that can cause bad breath). From an early age children can try to brush their own teeth, but until they are competent an adult should repeat the process. A

good tip is to cradle the child’s head and brush their teeth from behind, which allows better access. From three years of age onwards, children should use age recommended electric toothbrushes which are clinically proven to clean better.

Children, just as adults, should brush twice a day. It is best to develop a routine. Brushing immediately after a meal is not recommended. Tooth brushing should be the last thing that is done before bedtime and nothing should be consumed after that (apart from water).

for well-mannered children

How many times in a day do you question someone’s manners, whether they’re over or under the age of 18? The number of times no one offers a seat to a heavily pregnant woman or someone on crutches fills me with despair. In many cases it’s because we live in our own little words, plugged into one device or another, not paying attention to the world around us. This makes teaching children manners from an early age even more important.

Everyone appreciates manners.

And just as a child with bad manners leaves a lasting impression, so too does a child who is polite and helpful!

Learning to be a responsible and respectful human being, means thinking about how your actions will impact on other people. It’s about not only looking out for yourself but in many cases putting someone else first.

In so many cases, manners fall by the wayside. We’re teaching our children so many things, that something has to give, but as these children get older, the lack of manners

becomes terribly apparent.

Growing up we were expected to interact politely with adults and children alike. If we forgot our manners we were reminded, and as we grew up, when we visited someone’s house, not only did we say please and thank you, but we were helpful and we tried to include siblings in the games we played. Why? Because we’d been told it was polite!

important are instilled in your child from an early age, whether it’s saying please and thank you or clearing their plates from the table; consistency, repetition, and role modelling are key.

Expect More

We expect a lot less from our children these days than we have in the past, and it’s time to change that. Children test boundaries, and are always learning so you can’t expect them to just know what you expect. You need to set expectations before an event or situation. For example if your child is going to someone else’s house for dinner, what do you expect of them? What do you consider polite? When they come home, ask how things went, and if they don’t mention clearing the table, probe further. Even if they insist their friends don’t have to help, your expectations are more important.

If you give up your seat on the train or hold doors for others, your child will be more likely to see these actions as normal and mimic your behaviour. Anyone helping to raise your children needs to be on the same page. If grandma doesn’t expect a thank you and you do, this is confusing.

Children learn by example, both good and bad. If you or your partner leave the table without clearing your plate

or don’t say thank you when someone does something nice, why should they?

If they have friends who are a good example, compliment their behaviour in front of your children, don’t make a huge fuss – but show them you appreciate it.

Consistency and Repetition

If you’re in a public place and your child is not demonstrating good manners, don’t be afraid to call them on it.

Your expectations need to be consistent if you want your children to learn them. If you expect pleases and thankyous, let them know what for, ie say hello when someone walks into a room, or thank you when they are given a gift.

You need to make sure it happens every time - even if you have to ask them to do it. This can feel embarrassing, but it’s important. And, other parents will understand – most of them will be having the same conversations with their children. Eventually it will become second nature.

Helping your child to interact with their peers

All children have a desperate need to be included and accepted, and while some children seem to be naturally gifted at friendship others may need a little more guidance. So what can we do as parents to help?

Firstly, it is important to realise that friendships between children, not unlike those of adults, will not always be plain sailing.

There are bound to be times when there are disagreements or other children come in to their friendship circle, temporarily disrupting the dynamics. Sometimes children need help with heartbreak when friends move away or a friends move on. Our children are learning all about relationships through these processes.

I feel it is helpful to work together to sort out any problems that come up in your child’s friendships. One of the best ways to do this is to encourage the relationships your child develops by talking to them about their friends and having them over to your home.

Sport, especially team games, can be a great way to develop friendships. While fostering the skills required to work with others as part of a team, your child will also learn how to deal with conflict, as inevitably disagreements will arise. When conflict occurs, both parties think they are right and knowing how to move on from this is

extremely important. Firstly, let the children have a short cool down period and then show them how to bridge the gap with the other person. This can be done by showing them how they are both right in their own ways or why someone might behave in a certain way.

This bridging might be an apology or giving them time to express how they feel or sharing an understanding. It does not make either of them wrong and the apology or listening gets the relationship back on track.

The first question I ask a nanny wanting to register with me is: “Why did you become a nanny?” Sadly, I have received the answer: “Because it’s easy to do and anybody can do it.” This is absolutely NOT the case.

Being a nanny is neither a 9 to 5 job nor an easy pay check. As every parent knows, children can push you to the very limit of your patience every day and caring for them can be physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting.

Do you need childcare qualifications in order to be an exceptional nanny? Not necessarily, but, by the same token, I am not interested in people who simply ‘didn’t know what else to do’. There is a call for all nannies to be qualified, but there are some exceptional child carers that have personal qualities that cannot be learned and which no amount

of qualifications can guarantee. Insisting on qualifications would push these child carers out of the market and this would be a great shame.

Such nannies have an almost innate ability to tune into what is going on around them, to take note of both the big picture and the minute details and act accordingly. Nannies with this ability can often pre-empt the needs of others before they even arise, making it possible to step forward when pro-activity is required, blend into the background, if necessary, and switch between the two seamlessly and at a

moment’s notice.

These nannies react appropriately and quickly to ever changing circumstances and integrate themselves into the family unit, whilst, at the same time, respecting its privacy and staying detached from any personal issues with which it may be grappling.

These exceptional nannies excel as entertainers, educators, chefs and good listeners. They are brilliant multi-taskers who

can feed a baby whilst helping an older child learn spellings for a test, and build a Lego car at the same time. They are endlessly creative, coming up with new ideas daily, whilst simultaneously keeping calm, having the patience to repeat things multiple times and conjuring up a catalogue of answers for realms of endless Whys?

Such a nanny is remembered when children grow up for being the person who could discipline them whilst showing them they were still loved: the one they came to for advice, for comfort and to have a laugh with, and most importantly, the person who never turned them down if they wanted a cuddle!

As a nanny, you are loco parentis. Your job is to enable parents to get to work on time and stress-free, safe in the knowledge that their children are well cared for and well-loved in their absence.

As sad as it may be for parents to see their own children screaming for the nanny when she leaves at the end the day, it does mean that she is doing a wonderful job.

This will have a lasting and positive effect on their children.

Paying for childcare

After the challenge of finding the right childcare comes the challenge of paying for it. Families in the London area pay on average £152.06 each working week (well over £7,000 a year) for a part-time nursery place for a child under two, according to the Family and Childcare Trust’s latest study of childcare costs, or £31,174 a year for a full-time live-out nanny, according to the most recent Nannytax wages survey. The rise in childcare costs has outstripped inflation every year since 2002.

National Insurance (NI) on the amount you receive in vouchers, and your employer saves on their NI contributions too. If there’s not already a scheme at your workplace, encourage your employer to start one – after all, it will save them money! They need to do this by April 2018. The savings on tax and NI are worth around £933 a year for a basic rate taxpayer, so a couple who both receive vouchers could be almost £1,900 a year better off.

Next year will see the introduction a new tax-free childcare scheme, open to all working parents earning up to £100,000 a year, including freelancers, contractors, temps and others who can’t get childcare vouchers. For every 80p parents pay towards childcare the Government will add 20p (equivalent to basic-rate income tax), up to a maximum of £2,000

It’s worth thinking about ways of easing the huge cost of childcare as early as possible. If you’re employed, could you and your partner (if you have one) take Shared Parental Leave to delay the need to use paid childcare? Can you add accrued annual leave, paid at your usual rate, to the end of your maternity leave?

Remember that both you and your partner have a right to request to work flexibly. By doing compressed hours (eg a nine-day fortnight), cutting out your commute by working from home, or doing staggered days (eg mum working 7.30am–3.30pm, dad working 9.30am–5.30pm), you could reduce your childcare costs and enjoy more time with your little one too.

To benefit from any of the schemes mentioned in this article you’ll need to be using a childcare provider who’s registered with Ofsted. In practice this means nurseries, childminders, out-of-school clubs, most creches and many nannies, but generally not au pairs, grandparents or babysitters.

OFF TO BUTSER AT HALLIFORD SCHOOL

Sixty-one Halliford School students took a step back in time last term when they visited an Iron Age village in Hampshire.

The boys from Year 7 got a true ‘hands on’ feel for life in Britain before the Roman invasion at Butser Farm in Charlton which includes a re-created Iron Age enclosure.

After a fascinating lecture in one of the round houses the boys undertook a range of activities including dry stone walling, fence building and ‘clunch’ making.

Clunch, a powdered chalk, soil and water mix was used by the ancient Britons for rendering the walls of their houses and outbuildings. It’s a messy job, as many of the boys found out when they tried making it for themselves!

Following a picnic lunch, the students enjoyed a guided tour of a Roman villa. The villa is based on one excavated at Sparsholt near Winchester. Despite the creature comforts to be found inside, many of the boys were surprised at how sophisticated the ancient Britons were. “I had no idea they were so clever,” said 12 year old Barny Mather. “They seemed to live a primitive life but the more you learn about them in a place like this, the more you realise how much they knew about survival techniques.”

The end of term drama production at Newland House in Twickenham was a simply stunning and uproarious rendition of the British gangster musical Bugsy Malone, where real bullets were swapped for splurge guns and custard pies. The story tells of the rise of Bugsy Malone, a one-time washed up boxer and the rivalry between two half-witted street gangs led

by Fat Sam and Danny Dan. All acted with a genuine touch of de Nero.

Blousey Brown, an aspiring singer was touching, Fizzy the janitor was stirring and Tallulah was appropriately glamorous.

The show’s message is one of good, clean fun and the comic timing and zeal in which the

cast adopted their roles, complete with accents and style left the audience laughing, applauding and dazzled by the amazing sets.

This was a performance made special by the number of children with roles and the collective efforts of the whole cast including those back stage, the live band, singers, dancers, and actors.

The show ended amid slapstick chaos as a massive splurge gun fight erupted, covering everyone (including Headmaster, Mr Alexander) with foam!

In some ways, the younger the child the more anxious the parent, although the worry and protectiveness will never really go away and older children may be able to rationalise their feelings more with their parents.

Nonetheless, both parents and children are likely to have a few sleepless nights due to a mixture of anxiety and excitement.

Nothing solves that worry like a good first day, and that can be supported by a little bit of preparation beforehand.

Most schools will allow a taster day so that your child can make friends in advance, and be familiar with the setting.

Many schools do a session in the new classroom before the year ends (for a September start), and will be happy to welcome your child on that day to meet the new teacher and be part of the anticipatory process. There may well be induction days and coffee mornings for you to see the school in action, while your child visits. In my experience, children often cry once a parent collects, because they feel relief and/or exhaustion.

If you then follow up with questions about what went wrong, then you will have missed the chance to reinforce what went right, and create an excitement about the next and subsequent days. It is worth remembering that if you ask children what was wrong, then they will naturally

assume that something must be, and focus on that. Reward them instead for trying hard and for counting the positives.

2016 marked the 70th anniversary of King’s House School in Ricmond with summer celebrations for pupils, staff, parents, governors and alumni including a Thanksgiving Service, a street party and a summer ball.

On the 1st May 1946, Ronald Patullo, known affectionately as Pluto, set up King’s House converting a former vicarage into a boy’s prep school where the School is still based to this day on Richmond Hill.

The Thanksgiving Service included some wonderful musical performances by pupils as well as former head boys Philip Wigg and Cameron Spain recalling memories

of their time at King’s House and alumnus Harry Kersley performing an inspirational rendition of Nessun Dorma. The Thanksgiving Service was followed by a street party for all the boys and girls back at School which sadly had to move indoors due to unseasonably wet weather.

The celebrations culminated with a Touch of Forties Summer Ball hosted at King’s House Sports Ground for parents and staff.

GETTING YOUR CHILD INTO A GOOD SCHOOL ROUTINE

School days and dark mornings can play havoc with your child’s routine. Here’s how to keep them happy - and get them up on time!

As you and your child get into the autumn and winter school term, it can be difficult to cope with changing weather and dull days.

The long evenings of summer are over, the nights draw in and the mornings are dark. Getting your child settled into a good routine is essential if you are going to ensure they get enough sleep and are able to get up on time for school without too much effort and moaning.

Exercise is your best friend

Even if the weather is dreadful, try to make sure that your kids have some exercise every day. Not only will it help keep them fit and healthy but it also helps them to get a good night’s sleep. The best time is just after school, when it’s still light and you can take them to the playground or let them loose in the garden. Then it’s time for homework, dinner, bath and bed.

Nicola Groves, an ex student from Tolworth Girls’ School was selected to represent Great Britain at the Rio Olympics, as part of the sailing team for Great Britain.

Nicola took time out from her busy schedule to come and talk to students at the School last term. Nicola talked about her experiences as a student at Tolworth Girls’ School and about her selection for the Rio Olympics.

Tolworth Girls’ School and Sixth form which is in the top 10% of schools nationally for its progress, measures and achieves results year-on-year and is extremely proud that one of its former students

represented this country at the Rio Olympic Games. Nicola went on to study at Exeter University where she managed to juggle her studies with her sailing commitments, graduating with a BSc in Human Biosciences.

Nicola still keeps in touch with her friends at Tolworth Girls’ School who have all been supportive. Nicola competed in a Nacra 17 catamaran with her sailing partner Ben Saxton.

This year starts a new chapter for The Falcons School for Boys in Richmond and Chiswick with retiring Headmaster Gordon Milne heading back to his beloved Yorkshire. From September, two different faces will be at the helm, Andrew Forbes, previously Deputy Head of the Pre-Prep and Deon Etzinger, previously Deputy Head of the Prep. Between them they have

been at Falcons for fifteen years and bringing them together as joint Heads makes obvious sense.

They stress that one of the benefits of coming into a new Headship from within a school is that they are both “fresh out of the classroom”, so they have an intimate knowledge of how the school is working on a day-to-day basis. They are continuing a philosophy well-established in the School and one of which they are justly proud: that boys leave the School with their heads held high knowing they have succeeded.

Catch-a-balls has broken down catching and throwing skills into child-sized pieces but not all of them can be achieved at the first attempt; everyone needs to practise and go on a voyage of discovery.

Some children will practise more at home with siblings or parents on hand to throw and catch.

Others use lesson time as their practise time. Either way, through practise they get closer to their challenge goal. Additionally children learn how to deal with failure, giving them the courage to get up and try again. At Catch-a-balls the coaches love watching the children progress in class, and witnessing the pleasure it gives children and parents when another small throw or catch is achieved.

The benefits of karate

In my experience as a karate teacher, children need many things including: security, firm boundaries, leadership, challenges, status and self-esteem.

If these qualities are drawn together by good teachers they can contribute towards producing a healthy happy individual.

Karate isn’t unique in producing such qualities it is merely one catalyst that creates an environment for character development.

I have never regarded karate as a sport and although London Karate Ltd dabbles in sport karate we have always focused on karate as a system of personal development. The immense difficulties of growing up and developing a child into a confident and happy individual dominate the thoughts and worries of many modern parents. The contemporary world is full of advice about protecting kids and ensuring that they are not damaged physically and psychologically. Much of this advice leads to confusion.

When students enter a class for the first time they submit themselves to a system of behaviour that is rewarded by application and practise. A protocol of manners and rank is established; these are the secure boundaries. Each term an examination takes place and the student is rewarded for their individual improvement along their

own ability line. As they pass each test they are rewarded a new badge of rank, a coloured belt, which enhances their self-esteem. Their study is physically and mentally demanding; the motivation to continue is created by the reward of being able to cope with fear. Confident, fit individuals who have learned how to defend themselves are less likely to be confronted or threatened and they are more inclined to lead and protect weaker individuals. With reference to this, one of our teenage female students who had studied with us since she was four years old, was attacked one evening on the street by a man. The student floored the man without a second thought or panic by bringing into action the karate skills she had learnt over the previous 11 years allowing her to escape unharmed.

How to make your parties age-appropriate

It’s difficult to know how to keep kids entertained at parties especially as they get older. At what age do face paints and musical statues no longer cut it?

For which age group would you book an entertainer? And when do you move from a party to an outing?

Ω Pre-school

Keep it simple. Think dressing up, treasure hunt, face paints and games and have the party at home. Lay out sandwiches and savoury eats first, keeping sweet treats for after. Buy the cake and give a book instead of a party bag. Put presents to one side and open them afterwards.

Ω 4-7 Years

An entertainer comes into their own with this age group. Why not ask a friend or relative to take on the task and plan out some games and activities beforehand? Pass the Parcel remains a firm favourite for this age group but other games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey and a Piñata will also be a hit.

Book a hall, go to a sports centre or cinema, learn a skill, have dinner at a restaurant or have it at home (depending on your numbers and bravado).
