An education that’s anything but general

Our Cognates Program of General Education lets you tailor your curriculum to your interests and academic goals, making your education more engaging and effective. The cognates program comprises three Areas of Knowledge— Arts and Humanities, People and Society, and STEM. Cognates, which are a set of three (or more) courses that share a common theme or focus, are used in conjunction with your major to help shape an education that reflects the breadth and depth of your unique interests.

Explore your options at cognates.miami.edu.

“ The cognate system allowed me to turn my varied interests into comprehensive fields of study that would stand out on a resume. I am set to graduate stacked with diverse skills to bring to the workforce.”

A legacy written in orange and green

Being a student at the University of Miami means you’re a Cane through and through. Our campus community is full of team spirit and rich traditions. These are just a few.

Count on the Band of the Hour to hype up the crowd as we cheer on our fellow Canes. The Band of the Hour is well known for its pregame and halftime performances at Hurricane football games.

Homecoming

Homecoming is a time for all students, alumni, and friends to come together to celebrate being a Cane! The week’s events include one of the largest service days of the year, a spirit day, a block party, and fireworks around Lake Osceola. It all leads up to the year’s biggest football game.

Four fingers

At the start of the fourth quarter of every home football game, Miami players and fans can be seen holding up four fingers to indicate the belief that a game is won in that crucial final period. Hurricane fans use the sign as a symbol that they own that last quarter.

Sebastian the Ibis

The local marsh bird is believed to be the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane and first to reappear after the storm. Today, Sebastian is one of the most recognizable college sports mascots in the United States. No matter what, the University’s biggest fan is always ready to lead a C-A-N-E-S cheer.

Colors

University of Miami students eat, breathe, and live orange, green, and white, colors taken from the Florida orange tree and blossom.

Athletic powerhouse

Win or lose, University of Miami students always root for their beloved Canes. miamihurricanes.com

Not going pro?

Baseball, golf, karate, kiteboarding, lacrosse, rock climbing—if there’s a sport you’re interested in, chances are the Club Sports Program offers it. As a training ground for leadership skills, organizational development, and teaching, club sports are an opportunity for every student to get involved and stay active.

Whole body wellness

More than a gym, the Herbert Wellness Center takes a holistic approach to wellness; it’s a mind, body, and soul experience. Take up yoga or Pilates. Unwind in the sauna and spa. Try a cooking class and learn how to prepare healthy meals for energetic days and long study sessions. wellness.miami.edu

Magic City

There is the Miami you know from TV. And then there’s the real Miami. From historic to contemporary, there’s something to enjoy for everyone under the sun. Beyond the extraordinary blend of colors, cultures, and opportunities, you’d be hard-pressed to find a city as diverse as Miami. So, welcome! ¡Bienvenidos! Byen venu! Here’s a taste of what our location has to offer.

Culture

Pioneers such as the Coral Gables Playhouse, independent Books & Books, and a core group of private art collections set the stage for the explosive growth of Miami’s cultural scene. Miamians enjoy festivals dedicated to literature, food, music, and art—Art Basel and satellite fairs draw thousands to Miami each December. Year-round, mainstays like the Pérez Art Museum Miami reflect our multicultural identity.

Food

Miami’s world-class culinary culture draws on Latin, Caribbean, Asian, and local roots to take your taste buds on an adventure.

Celebrate the weekend with Saturday brunch off a tree-lined Coconut Grove street. Beyond the entrée, Miamians take their coffee very seriously—whether it’s a cafecito from one of Little Havana’s many walk-up windows or a cup from local roaster Panther Coffee.

Parks & Rec.

Whether you’re looking to decompress on land or water, we have plenty of choices. Kayak with friends on Biscayne Bay, bike through Everglades National Park, or spend a day in Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. If it’s a more rigorous workout you are looking for, head over to Oleta River State Park to hit the trails or rent a paddleboard at Peacock Park. Whatever your fancy, outdoor activities are yearround attractions.

Sports

Home to the Miami Dolphins and our Miami Hurricanes, Hard Rock Stadium is the sports hub in Miami. It’s also the venue for Formula 1 Racing and the Miami Open tennis tournament—two can’t-miss events! Want more? You can watch your favorite team play at a Miami Heat, Marlins, or Inter Miami CF game. Ice hockey in South Florida? We’ve got that too, with the Florida Panthers. Wherever your loyalties lie, you’ll feel the force of our vibrant sports town.
