UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES (UNSW) ENERGY TOMORROW IN AUSTRALIA

This program explores energy and sustainability, with a focus on new developments in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The program includes exposure to cutting-edge renewable energy technologies, such as visits to a uranium mine and wind farm, and a three-day camping expedition in Kakadu National Park.

RESEARCH AND KOREAN CULTURE AT THE ULSAN NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN ULSAN, SOUTH KOREA

This program combines study of Korean language & culture with a primer on the economics of globalization and a research internship. Courses and the research internship are complemented by multiple excursions to nearby industrial sites and cultural centers.

This program provides students with a rare opportunity to explore current trends in automotive technology from a Japanese perspective. The program covers the latest topics in automotive engineering enhanced by cultural and industry site visits.

Industry partners include Denso, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi and more.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION AT NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY IN SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE

This program exposes students to the fundamental entrepreneurship competencies and skills needed to build and grow businesses. Topics include: creativity, innovation, new venture creation process, and accounting concepts. Classes include opportunities to network with business leaders and working professionals. Get a jump start on the minor in entrepreneurship by studying in Singapore this summer.

CLEAN ENERGY IN XIAMEN, CHINA

This program brings U-M CoE and Xiamen University students together to explore the field of Clean Energy from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students visit two nuclear power plant construction sites and gain unique insight into the construction process and reactor safety.

UM-SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY JOINT INSTITUTE IN SHANGHAI, CHINA

This program is a great way to learn about Chinese culture and earn credit towards your UM degree. Engineering and liberal arts courses are taught in English by UM and Joint Institute Faculty, and introductory Chinese culture and language courses are led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University faculty. Various excursions within China organized by the program coordinators.

ENGINEERING ACROSS CULTURES IN CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

This program brings together students of U-M CoE and Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Engineering. Students learn about engineering across cultures with focus on the cultural foundations of Thai society and how they inform development work and appropriate technology in the region. Coursework is complemented by excursions in northern Thailand to witness community-based projects which utilize engineering technology.

HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (HKUST) SUMMER PROGRAM IN KOWLOON, HONG KONG

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) promotes interdisciplinary research by establishing research units that operate across school and department lines. Students choose from a menu of these courses, combined with excursions to various sites in Hong Kong and mainland China.

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING SUMMER SCHOOL (IESS) AT BERLIN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY IN BERLIN, GERMANY

This program helps students gain insight into German culture, engineering, and industry. The program includes intensive German language training and TU Berlin research lab experience on small project teams led by German graduate students.

Lab work is complemented by visits to relevant scientific and industrial sites near Berlin.

This program includes a research internship with an RWTH Aachen University team, an intensive German course, excursions in Aachen, and workshops on intercultural learning, scientific methods and research practice in Germany. This program provides students with overall knowledge of aeronautics and space fundamentals, as viewed from a European perspective. It also combines classroom lectures with technical visits to industrial aerospace and historical sites in various French locations, including the Paris Airshow (every other summer).

This program combines the U-M course on Probabilistic Methods with French language and culture at l’École Nationale Supérieure de l’Electronique et de ses Applications (ENSEA). The program features an excursion to Normandy, France and an overnight trip to Geneva, Switzerland where students visit CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

How competitive are the programs? Am I likely to be accepted?

We strongly encourage you to apply for your first choice program, paying attention to the minimum eligibility requirements and spending time on your application essays. If you’re concerned about the competitiveness of a particular program, please speak with an IPE advisor.

Can I open more than one application?

In certain circumstances, advisors may allow students to apply for more than one IPE program per term. If you need permission to start a second application, please contact your IPE advisor.

Do I have to pay U-M tuition for the programs?

No! Instead of U-M tuition for the Summer term, students are charged a Program Fee, and Financial Aid applies.

How soon after I apply will I be notified of admissions decisions?

IPE does not do rolling admission; applicants will be notified of admissions decisions after the application deadline. Decisions are issued 1-4 weeks after the deadline.

What happens if I don’t get admitted to my first choice program?

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

This program combines the fundamentals of sustainability and industrial ecology with European perspectives on business, history, and culture. Students spend a weekend in Paris, participate in an outdoor adventure weekend in Evian-les-Bains, and tour local cultural sites.

Students who are Waitlisted or Denied from their first choice program may be allowed to open a second application; please contact your IPE advisor.

If I’m admitted to a program, do I have to participate?

An offer of admissions does not bind you to participation; you will be given one week from the time you are admitted to a program to make your final confirmation decision.

Is there a penalty if I confirm participation in a program and then withdraw?

Yes; confirming participation on an IPE summer program commits you to paying the IPE Program Fee for that program. If you withdraw after committing to the program, you will be charged the full Program Fee, as well as a $1000 withdrawal fee.

Is a passport required as part of the application?

Yes; students must either already have a passport at the time of application, or have applied for a passport (or passport renewal) by the application deadline. Passports must be valid until at least 6 months after the end of the program.

I don’t quite meet the GPA requirement; am I still eligible?

In most cases, the GPA requirement is strict. However, some exceptions may be made in certain cases, so please contact your IPE advisor for assistance.

Do I need a visa to participate?

Depending on the program and the participant’s country of citizenship, a visa may be required for participation on an IPE program. Students cannot apply for visas until after they are admitted to programs; see your IPE advisor if you have any questions.
