Doctor warns vs. use of ‘Sehat Badan’ coffee

Hon. Margarita Cari, 49, passes away

• says it is an analgesic mix, eyes steroids, too

By Lalaine M. Jimenea

ORMOC CITY – Health practitioners here are alarmed at the rising cases of patients suffering from the possible adverse effects of “Sehat Badan”, an Indonesian “health supplement” that comes in a form of a coffee drink, against which the Food and Drug Administration has already issued a “public health warning” since January 2014.

Over the last two months here in the city, at least three doctors (all specialists) reported of seeing patients who looked “edematous” (nanghupong), all of who said they’ve been drinking “Sehat Badan” religiously for several weeks. These patients claimed they felt better after taking the said coffee, which they made them “feel strong”, unlike before when they would always feel tired and had lots of body pains. Dr. Rhodette E. Arevalo, an internist and a cardiologist, said she has seen at least eight patients who reported drinking the banned coffee supplement. She knows of at least two other doctors who’ve also seen the same in their patients. Almost all of these patients looked bloated and edematous, hence, she suspects that aside from the ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium and paracetamol that the FDA found it contained, the coffee could also be laced with steroids. Long-term steroid use may cause the patient to have a round, moon-faced appearance and a “buffalo hump,” a hump behind the shoulder which can develop when fat gathers together behind the neck. Arevalo, who is also the president of the Ormoc City Medical Society (OCMS), said she wrote to the FDA to conduct more tests into the coffee mixture, to see if it had steroids, too. She has already see

BPO reopens, heralding a new hope for Leyteños PALO, LEYTE (PNA) – Freight Process Outsourcing Solutions, Inc. (FPOSI), a business process outsourcing company that used to operate here before Yolanda, reopened on Wednesday, October 8, in the morning. The BPO’s reopening assures Leytenos of jobs aside from sending a strong message that the province, 11 months after being flattened by super typhoon Yolanda, is now ready to welcome investors. The non-voice firm, a part of the Direct Data Capture (DDC) Group of Companies, processes the billing invoices of trucking companies in the United States. FPOSI Leyte president Frances Ann Petilla, wife of Energy Secretary and former Leyte governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, admitted that they almost decided to shutdown their operations in the province and bring it to other parts of the country after suffering devastation from Yolanda. “We almost gave up but due to the spirit of the FPOSI, we pushed back to open in Leyte,” she explained. The decision also answered the questions raised by majority of their employees of whether or not they could still have their jobs back. After the typhoon, they brought more than 500 of their employees in Manila so they can keep their jobs and have sustained income. They are the same people who are now manning the firm located at the Leyte Mikyu Economic Zone in Pawing village of Palo. Its reopening may also open more opportunities as the company is looking at the possibility of expanding in the future. “Our niche in this industry is actually so big. Our clients are in the US and of course, I hope to go bigger to make this company move forward,” she said.

ENERGY SECRETARY CARLOS JERICHO PETILLA, his wife Frances Ann, Leyte governor Dominic Petilla, together with two BPO executives, grace the reopening of the FPOSI. Currently, the company can accommodate 1,100 employees seated in terminals and close to 40 administrative staff. Meanwhile, Brett Trevalyan, director of the DDC Group of Companies said that “the people of Leyte and the people of the Philippines are very resilient and they bounced back incredibly strongly.” “I think that we owe the people of Leyte our loyalty because they’ve given their loyalty to us. So it would be wrong for us not to invest money and bring jobs to Leyte. The most important thing to do in a situation like this is bringing good, long term, well-paying jobs to people so they become normalize again,” he said. “We’re not going to leave Leyte. We hope to bring in more jobs,” said Jan Trevalyan, president of the DDC group of companies. Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla, meanwhile, challenged the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to use the experience of the BPO firm as an example when they

promote the province. He cited that the BPO, amidst its complex operation, was able to exist right in the middle of typhoon Yolanda area. “The message that we want to bring across is to tell the world that if you really want to help Leyte then you really have to bring in the jobs here,” he said. Governor Leopoldo Dominic Petilla, meantime, believed that resilient Leyteños could again make Leyte “investor and business destination.” The inauguration and blessing of the new FPOSI building was also highlighted by the unveiling of company

logo made up of the parts of the destroyed computers of the company overlapped with three parts of the globe and selected continents. “The logo was an inspiration for me. I want to do something that represents us, the company and the people. This actually is the destroyed company that was destroyed by Yolanda and I said, we are picking up the pieces,” the lady Petilla said. The building, the first of its kind in Leyte, is solarpowered. Extra power that is generated will be sold to the grid, she added. Solar panels installed at the rooftop can generate up to 198 kilowatts.

Pope scolds Petilla? Netizens fall for “The Adobo Chronicles” ORMOC CITY – A post about Pope Francis I “reprimanding” Palo, Leyte Mayor Remedios “Matin” Petilla for allegedly attempting to transfer bunkhouse occupants to impress him on his visit to the town next year has recently gone viral after it was “liked”, shared and reshared in various social networks. The post appears at Filipino-run “The Adobo Chronicles”, a satirical page that vaunts itself as “The Best Source of Unbelievable News”. However, despite the disclaimer, many undiscerning netizens apparently believe the satire is “true.” As of this report, 10,000 netizens have “liked” the post on Facebook and still counting. 72 have tweeted it and is expected to exponentially spread in the next few hours. The report, titled “Pope Francis Reprimands Philippine Mayor”, claims that the pontiff sent a “strongly-worded letter” to the Palo Mayor, “reprimanding her for attempting to hide the truth from the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.” It continues to state that the mayor, who is a former three-term governor of Leyte, “wants to transfer 250 families living in bunk houses in Barangay Candahug to another place five kilometers away so they will not be very visible when Pope Francis visits the town in January. The families, who had been staying in the bunk houses in Candahug after their houses were destroyed by the supertyphoon on Nov. 8, 2013, would be transferred to other bunk houses in Barangay Tacuranga or permanent relocation sites ahead of the papal visit.” Because of this, The Adobo Chronicles claim that Pope Francis

rebuked Petilla harshly, writing “What part of ‘visiting the typhoon victims’ do you not understand? That is the primary reason I am coming to the Philippines. Do not displace them just to impress me because I am not that easily impressed, especially by those who are not truthful like yourself.” The satire was posted on The Adobo Chronicles website on October 5 yet, but it was only last night that the post went viral on Facebook, especially here in Leyte Province. Here in Ormoc, Jen Sacay-Pongos shared the post saying, “boom tagam” (boom, lesson l e a r n e d ) . H o w e v e r, Frederick Ygnacio Jr., the brother of Energy Usec. Zenaida Y. Monsada, was quick to correct her. “Mo tu-o mo ani? ADOBOCHRONICLES? The best source of UNBELIEVABLE NEWS. There’s so much to learn in the internet”, he said Attributing the harshly worded letter to Pope Francis I also offended many netizens. Apple Anido-Alagon, a fashion blogger and whose family is identified with the Romualdezes in Tacloban, said “Though I am not pro Petilla, I don’t think the Pope will ever send a letter like that to anyone.

The Pope that I know is compassionate and forgiving. I’m disappointed that the article depicted him as an angry and judgmental person.” Netizen Rhiz Arenas agrees with her. “Good point, Apple, I was taken aback at how strong the words quoted to have been Pope Francis’ letter to the lady mayor. People should actually check the source before posting so as not to create a spectacle and sensationalize issues further.”

Warren O. Chu, a Chinoy businessman, further reiterates that “Adobo Chronicles is NOT a news organization. It’s a deliverer of false, sensationalized news. It is the same website who announced visa-free entry of Pinoys to the U.S. True enough, it was widely believed by plenty of our countrymen out of desperation. The US embassy was forced to issue a statement on the matter.”

What’s up with 4th LED projects? BEFORE ANYTHING else, allow me to extend our condolences to Congressman Boying Cari of the 5th district and his children for the loss of Margie. It’s almost unbelievable but yes, Margie, only 49 years old, is gone. Margie went into a coma on September 17, just two days before her in-laws Golden Wedding Anniversary, while in Cebu to do last minute shopping for the wedding. I heard from some staff that she was also planning to buy rolls of cloth for her people at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, for their uniforms. They remembered her as “so happy and bubbly.” That is their memory of her. I knew about Margie’s condition from the start. Family updated me once in a while, but I did not run the news because somehow, I felt it was intrusive and inappropriate at a time when the family was hoping for a miracle. rrr

There have been a lot of complaints surrounding government projects. The complaints are not limited to the City’s seemingly snailpaced restoration of government infrastructure, despite having funds to its disposal. There is also the infrastructure works of the 4th LED. Since I had to huff off to Manila late this week, I could not make news on my interview with 4th LED assistant district engineer Erwin Antonio, so I decided to make room for it on this column. The two bridges at Merida, Leyte: I was at the 4th LED on Tuesday. I was told that DE Lino Gonzales was to grace a Sangguniang Bayan inquiry the next day about two bridges in Merida, construction which seemed to have been put on hold. Engr. Antonio said that work on the bridges, indeed, have been put on hold because of the need for a new design or “re-engineering.” During the pile driving, it was found out that its depth was deeper than projected, hence the need to redesign. There is also the corresponding adjustment in the costs, he added, hence all this have to be re-submitted to head office for approval. And this is a ticklish process, said Engr. Antonio. It takes time to re-design, aside from re-processing the papers. BUT he is confident that before the year ends, both bridges will be finished. He said that they have decided that for the cost adjustment, they will not wait for additional funds to be released but take it from other items of work. Most likely, he said, the bridges will be finished but its approach will not be cemented yet. The Ormoc Diversion Road: Except for a few hundred meters on the Patag-Sumangga-Bantigue side of the road that were skipped because of right-of-way disputes, Engr. Antonio said the road there was basically finished. The problematic area is the Biliboy side which exits at San Pablo. Again, there were some changes in plans when it was found out that the original route, as proposed was either impossible to work on or very expensive. A particular problem area is the bridge, which would see

Must read list “HOW WE Got To Now” is a new book that you’ll want to add to your “must read” list. Written by Steven Johnson, it examines “six innovations and their unforeseen spinoffs that make today’s modern world: The printing press, for example, ignited a revolution in glass making that by 1590, resulted in the microscope to photography, movies, TV and telescopes that traced the “Big Bang”.. During periods of rapid innovation, there is uproar as people try to make sense of innovations. They spur many unpredictable offshoots.” Even the smartest seers end up being terrible at predicting the future. “ Invented in the 1400s, the printing press mass produced books, newspapers and magazines. That fueled increases in literacy and spawned new industries. It also laid the foundation for colossal changes in how citizens expected to be governed, leading to more open and democratic societies. But few recall the printing press also ignited a revolution in glass making. People began to demand eyeglasses to help read material that printing presses were producing”. When there was little to read, few cared about the farsightedness. Eyeglasses were hard to find and expensive. But because of the printing press, an entire industry of lens crafters was born. Soon artisans discovered that spectacles were just one kind of lens. By 1590, they’d figured out a way to use lenses called microscopes to see the tiniest of things. And a generation later, lenses called telescopes were focused on distant objects. Telescopes helped change our understanding of how humans and the Earth evolved. Microscopes helped drive quantum leaps in medicine. Eventually, new kinds of lenses changed the definition of media, too — to include photography, movies and television. “Smartphones and tablets, along with the software and cloud computing growing up around them, are turning the world on its ear. There is massive global handwringing to figure out how much of this progress is good and how much is not so good. “How We Got To Now”, Johnson’s book reminds us these issues come with progress. Some argue that Silicon Valley is becoming dominant as Detroit was during the first half of the 20th century. “The best and brightest now all want to move west to work at companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon

and Microsoft. The problem is companies create as much wealth as the automakers did at their peak but hire only a fraction of the people. The automakers employed more than 1 million workers by the 1950s, when General Motors was the most profitable company in the world. The top tech companies by market capitalization — Google, Apple and Microsoft — employ less than 25 percent of that. Johnson’s book spurs “less linear” thinking. One might have been able to foresee, five years ago, that the convergence of high gas prices, climate change and the smartphone revolution would create an insatiable demand for better batteries. But few could have predicted that an important attempt at a solution would happen. In the US, heavy manufacturing was supposed to be dying in but in September, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said that together with Panasonic, he would build “ the world’s largest battery plant in Nevada that will have worldwide effects beyond the 6,500 it will hire. Many expect a history of innovation to include various forms of power: sail, water, hydro, electric, wind, steam, gas — or the development of steel, or flight, or the elevator, or assemblyline manufacturing. But when was the last time you thought of the importance of glass to the history of the world? Or of Galileo’s pendulum clock — the first machine that could keep accurate time to the minute? “Would the industrial revolution have even happened” without it?, Johnson asks. “You can make a reasonably good case that the answer is no.” The Industrial Revolution required a schedule for the delivery of materials and the arrival of workers at factories. That would not have been possible without accurate clocks, he says. Invention of the microphone and the vacuum tube enabled the entertainment industry. But also it gave dictators such as Adolf Hitler a new tool to grab power — the political rally. “For the first time, Johnson says, dictators could be heard by tens of thousands. “And they used their superior oratorical skills to whip crowds into a frenzy.” Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Lenin and

THE PARABLE of the two sons (Mt 21,2832) is very instructive about a particular aspect of our human condition, weakened as it is by sin. Yes, we tend to be inconsistent, and with that, are prone to other related anomalies like deceit, hypocrisy and pretension. But we can also change. There is always hope in spite of that tendency. We have to continually remind ourselves that while we may be beset with all sorts of crazy anomalies, there is always hope, there is always some cure, there’s a good chance for conversion and transformation. As the parable narrates, the first son said ‘no’ to his father’s request to work in the vineyard, but later on changed his mind and worked. The other son said ‘yes’ but did not go. When Christ asked his listeners who between the sons did the father’s will, they answered the first, and Christ told them they were correct in saying so. That, of course, tells us that more than words, it is deeds that would fulfil God’s will or the will of anybody, for that matter. We have to be ready to tackle this particular and, sad to say, very common problem of ours, making use of every opportunity we can be true to our words that in turn should be true to the will of anyone who has lawful authority over us and ultimately to God, the very source of authority. Consistency has to be viewed in the context of our relation to God, since it is in that relation that the proper delineation of all our other relations, either to persons or to things, events and issues would be properly developed and lived. God is the source of all good things, of truth and unity. He is the vine from which we as branches grow. Separated from him, there’s no other consequence but to be fragmented, to wither and die eventually. So, if we are truly interested in developing a strong consistency or unity of life, we need not look further to see where we can have it or where we can start. It’s in our relation with God, nourished by faith, hope and charity that God himself gives us in abundance. And for this faith, hope and charity to effectively shape our life, we have to dispose ourselves to them properly by being humble, by realizing that we by ourselves, no matter how brilliant or powerful our natural talents and powers may be, can only go so far without God. We need to deepen our humility, something that we should never take for granted. We can never think that we are already humble enough. We need to realize that deep in our consciousness, there is always a tendency of ourselves to assert ourselves over God and over any other authority. Christ himself has shown us the way by emptying himself. Let’s listen again to what St. Paul once said about the self-emptying (kenosis) of Christ: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. “But he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the

Remembering the illustrious Sen. Claro M. Recto IT IS indeed very unfortunate that 2 Oct 2014 came and went but it did not produce even a slight stir of our country. It was the 54th death (in 1960) anniversary of the very learned “think tank” whose legal opinion was very much sought for and respected by the Supreme Court. He was once a bar flunker who took the bar exams the following year and topped it with aplomb. It was then a magnificent come back for a law graduate who took the bad news with a grain of salt and eventually become like a shooting star if only to show to the new law graduates that losing the bar exams can not be a hindrance to a very determined individual. He was so engrossed with the matter of know-ledge and intelligence that it was even said that he subscribed to a number of newspapers around the world and found time to read them. This corner finds it unbelievable for a busy man to have time to do it. Perhaps due to his high intellect, the common tao cannot reach out to him. He once run for president but failed poorly. He was very nationalistic to the point of making his chauffeur stop if something is wrong in the way our flag is displayed in a government or private office. We all know that the color blue is above the red part of the flag during peace time and the red over the blue during war time. This corner is happy that Recto was still around when I was taking my college in Manila. This was also the time when we had a Filipino as President of the United Nations General Assembly in the person of Carlos P. Romulo. It was also here that Recto did not mince words in castigating on how our foreign affairs were handled. Romulo felt alluded to because he was top honcho in foreign affairs. It reached a point that Romulo challenged Recto to a public debate. We all know how Romulo figured well during the Liberation days. He had the rare privilege and distinction of accom-panying Gen. Douglas MacArthur when he came to the Philippines in response to his avowed promise of “I shall return.” Sen. Claro Recto was practically a one-man wrecking crew. Sen.Ralph Recto must be his grandson (?), he must have his genes. But is he presidentiable? If he did not marry popular Vilma Santos, could he have made it to the senatorial list? It is not likely. He seems not to

Sex reversal to the max be making waves at all. There was once a spell (in the ‘50s) with the so-called strange incident that was supposed to be a daughter(?) of the old man Recto who died in a vehicular accident. People passing by the vicinity of the Pepsi-Cola bottling plant along Balete Drive in Quezon City swear a ghost (?), a young lady in white, would be seen on the empty seat of vehicles passing by. It must have been the restless soul of the young lady seeking for prayers. Since it is no longer bothering vehicles, the soul must have found peace due to prayers. My eldest son used to be bothered by an anito. It disappeared after asking for the intervention of Fr. Aresio Astorga (+) who was then Parish Priest of SPP. The Senate was then on its highest esteem. Worthy people with impeccable virtues as against the present rubber stamp of the Executive department. Why the subservience? Just because the President wields a magical snap of the finger (with the DAP). Remember the P50 M for a yes vote on the impeachment of CJ Corona? What was his crime? He did not report his dollar account in his PSALN. There is a law that allows secrecy of dollar deposits to protect investors. Corona was just complying with this law. The law applies to all, not only to foreign investors. He knew his law too much? Is this therefore a crime? There was drama in this case when Recto was at his lowest when he flunked the bar exams and was able to pick up the pieces the following year when he reached the summit of topping the bar. It was like the time when Chess challenger Robert Fischer (of the US) giving two points (or two games) to defen-ding Champion Boris Spassky (of Russia) yet wresting away the championship with a flare. It was the first time ever that Chess was won by a non-Russian. Just imagine how Russia reacted to this debacle. Give me Recto anytime. The Philippine Senate was at its finest. Sen. Trillanes was once a fugitive. Sen. Koko Pimentel who changed his wife with another. Sen. Chiz Escudero who also changed wives. What happened to our morality? Are not Senators upright? And to think that the above personalities have a moist eye for the presidency!

THE POGAY AND TOMBOY may proclaim that their sex is opposite of what they are born with but nature says otherwise unless they have a gene that causes a sex reversal syndrome, in which people have the chromosomes of one sex but the physical attributes of the other. Males have XY while females contain XX chromosomes. In tilapia, sex reversal is made possible through the use of methyl testosterone in feeding newly hatched tilapia to produce mostly male tilapia. Male tilapia fish is preferred because it can grow faster and much bigger than the females. The males normally weigh from 600-800 grams in four months and can even grow bigger, but the females reach only as much as 150 grams within the same period. But there is another instance of extreme sex reversal in what scientists call as an “evolutionary novelty” in four insect species found in Brazil. The females have an elaborate, penis-like organ while the males have a vagina-like opening into which females insert their organ during mating sessions that last 40 to 70 hours. The researchers said these attributes make the four species of the insect genus Neotrogla unique in the world. They said that although sex-role reversal has been documented in several different types of animals, these insects are the sole example in which the “intromittent organ” - the male sex organ - is reversed. The Neotrogla insects are small - one tenth to one and a half tenths of an inch long (2.7 3.7 mm) - and superficially look like flies, with nothing really unusual about their appearance

The Gospel on Sunday OCTOBER 19, 2014 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22: 15 - 21 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle him in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Hero’di-ans, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God truthfully, and care for no man; for

aside from their genital structures. The scientists call the female penis-like structure a gynosome. During mating, a female inserts it into a male and receives sperm. Once inserted, part of the gynosome inflates and spines internally anchor the male and female insects together. The females of Neotrogla can hold male mates forcefully using their gynosome. Because the female anchoring force is very strong, a male’s strong resistance may cause damage to his genitalia. Therefore, it is very likely that entire mating processes are controlled actively by females, whereas males are rather passive, scientists said. A Brazilian researcher who was studying cave ecosystems first came across the insects, then enlisted an insect expert to examine the previously unknown bugs. It was at that point that the unique attributes of the female Neotrogla were discovered. There are other unusual examples of sex organs among animals, including female seahorses that use an organ to deposit eggs within a male’s brood pouch and a mite whose females have a long genital tube. By the definition of female - an organism that produces egg cells that are larger than the sperm cells produced by males - “even with the penis-like organ, females of Neotrogla are still female”. With this discovery, females of Neotrogla likely represent the most ‘macho’ females among animals to date.

you do not regard the position of men. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the money for the tax.” And they brought him a coin. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Anemia NI ATTY. MANING GOLO

Aircon Dear Atty. Golo,

Dear Mars,

Duna man kahay “aircon” nga “piggery” ang atong Bese Presidente? Iya man gung napatay si Pare nga naabtan niya didto sa among balay. Mikaon ra gud to si Pare og bahaw peru gitigbas man derecho ni Osting kay nangabugho lagi. Dapat “homicide” lang unta ang kaso kay didto man ang patay sod sa balay, di ba? Maka pyansa unta si Osting. Nganong na “murder” man?

Kon “homicide”, ang pyansa gitawag og “matter of right.” Peru bahin sa baboy, wa silay “right” nga mag “aircon”. “Privilege” lang nang ilaha kay politico man ang tag-iya.

MANY PEOPLE would consider a low blood pressure reading to be synonymous to anemia. A patient would inquire, “Doctor, my blood pressure is 90/60, am I anemic?” Anemia is determined not by measuring blood pressure, but by measuring one’s Complete Blood Count (CBC) which is a blood test. CBC will measure several blood components including Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells and platelets. The Red Blood Cells contain hemoglobin which is the oxygen carrier in the blood. The normal hemoglobin count is 12-14. Anemia is defined as having a decreased level of Red Blood Cells or hemoglobin in the body. To simplify it, there is normally 12 – 14 bags of blood circulating in our body and if one’s hemoglobin level falls below this range, it is already anemia. However, it may not be symptomatic until it becomes severe type (of anemia) where hemoglobin level drops below or equal to 7. There are 3 main causes of anemia. (1) Blood loss. There are 2 types of blood loss. (a) acute/sudden onset of blood loss usually involving trauma; such as those involved in accidents, shooting, stabbing or as postoperative complication. (b) chronic/slow occurrence of blood loss usually in cases of colon or gastrointestinal

cancer, where the tumor constantly bleeds leading to anemia. (2) Slow production of Red Blood Cells in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the factory of Red Blood Cells. It receives a signal (hormone) from the kidney called EPO to drive blood production and provide a normal hemoglobin level. Certain diseases can affect bone marrow activity such as kidney failure (caused by uncontrolled hypertension and/or diabetes) or cancer that has spread (metastasize) to the bone marrow; these conditions can therefore cause anemia, (3) Early destruction of the Red Blood Cells. The normal life span of the Red Blood Cells is 120 days (This is the basis why a healthy person can donate whole blood every 3 months). However, there are certain diseases where in the life span of the Red Blood Cells is shortened, as in the cases of Blood cancers or Leukemia. The signs of anemia are pallor, pale palms and nail beds; the symptoms of anemia are easy fatigability and shortness of breath on moderate exercise. In anemia, a high blood pressure may even occur as an adaptation see

Globe Telecom Center - Ormoc is now under new management FOR THE past 3 years, Globe Telecom has slowly outsourced its selected offices nationwide to companies or individuals who have extensive experience in sales and customer service. Couple Warren and Twinkle Chu of Sprint Distribution was awarded the Ormoc Center to better serve the subscribers of the city and neighboring towns. The Globe Center was inaugurated under the new management on September 29. The ribbon cutting ceremony was officiated by Ormoc Vice Mayor Leo Carmelo “Toto” Locsin Jr., the mothers of the couple,

Mrs. Aida Uy and Mrs. Andrea “Anling” Chu, and Mr. Patrick Gloria, Globe Regional Area Head of VISMIN. Cocktails and canapés were served for the rest of the evening. The event was crowded, despite the rain, with friends, subscribers, and various individuals who visited the center to inquire about the exclusive Plan 499 Unlimited Call and Text Promo especially created for the event. The new management tackled the problems of the previous owner head on. Customer service staff was immediately doubled from 6 to

12, and underwent an extensive 21-day training in Cebu. Waiting time at the center was reduced from 1 hour or more to just 15 minutes. Four staffers are assigned upfront to answer simple and short queries, and manage traffic to better handle waiting time. From a personal perspective, it was a pleasure to drop by and chat with staffers who can explain to you in detail the plan that suits your need. I came, I saw and I was convinced (to try out a data plan) and hope you all do the same. By Lalaine M. Jimenea

VIEW FROM ORMOC ... from P. 4 cross a ravine that is almost as deep as Agas-agas. There will be three bridges to be constructed on the route, it was learned. However, Engr. Antonio said they are confident this would all be finished by 2016 because the project is included in the General Appropriations Act or regular budget, thanks to the hardworking congresswoman Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez. Other roads: Engr. Antonio said that if not for the rains that has been bugging our region since Yolanda (remember “Igaton” and Mario), most of the other roads like the Matag-ob-Palompon highway, the Putingbato to Merida road would have been finished by now. However, the rains have set them back so much that the “allowance” they gave for project completion has been used up. However, he said, these slippages were excusable. A particular worry area now is a portion at Candelaria in Matag-ob, where the road has “liquefied” under the concrete highway. He said that aside from being a danger to road users, this is another expense as they try to re-engineer the area and find a solution to the problem. The controversial Albuera-Burauen road is also being worked on already, he said, but this is within the region’s concern. He said they just take care of projects P 50-million and below. Schoolbuildings: They recently bidded out some P 36-million worth of school building construction and repairs. The cost of the rooms, as designed by the national office, has hiked because of the “build back better” policy. However, Engr. Antonio takes pride that compared to other infrastructure, the DPWH constructed buildings before Yolanda fared better than those of others. May I end here as the paper is already short on space.

Palo Mayor says transfer of families from bunkhouses is not because of Pope’s visit PALO, LEYTE (PNA) -Whether or not Pope Francis arrives in Leyte, families living in bunkhouses situated at the government center in Candahug village of Palo, Leyte will be transferred to their permanent relocation site or transitional housing after one year. This was the explanation done by Mayor Remedios Petilla following reports that the more or less 260 families at the bunkhouse will be relocated to hide them from the view of the visiting Pope slated in January 2015. Petilla who is currently in Spain, in a phone patch interview over a local radio station here, said that she talked with leaders at the bunkhouses and they have been told that they will be staying there for one year in the meantime that their permanent relocation shelter is being constructed. The bunkhouses were constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) right after Yolanda to

accommodate Palo’s displaced families. Petilla told that the GMA Kapuso Foundation has already started the construction of their 200 permanent shelters while the Tzu Chi Foundation has completed 30 houses; both in Caloocan village. She said that the houses are expected to be completed by December. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has the names of those who will be transferred, she added. Petilla is slated to come home on October 14. However, she is expected to drop by in Japan where she will be talking to some groups that are interested to extend help to the town’s ongoing rehabilitation. On Wednesday, a report of Pope Francis allegedly reprimanding the mayor for trying to hide the real situation of Yolanda victims circulated in the social media. The story with dateline Vatican City, Italy was grabbed from the Adobo Chronicles site.

4 more villages, this time in Kananga, certified “Zero Open Defecation” by health authorities KANANGA, LEYTE – Four more villages in Leyte were certified “Zero Open Defecation” here in Kananga by health authorities on October 9, bringing the total to 7 after a similar declaration was made in nearby Matagob town last week. The villages are Aguiting, Libertad, Sto. Domingo and San Ignacio. Except for Aguiting which is nearer to the highway, the three others are remote mountain barangays. The program is spearheaded by Save the Children, an international NGO, through its Water, Sanitation and Hygience (WASH) component. Present during the declaration were Simone Klawitter of UNICEF; Thomas Howells, field manager for Western Leyte; Andi Dyah, WASH coordinator; and representatives from other NGOs like Mercy Malaysia, HELP and Oxfam. On the government side, present were provincial BM Deborah Bertulfo, representing Leyte governor Dominic Petilla; Mayor Elmer Codilla; Vice Mayor Macario Lumangtad Jr. and municipal health officer Dr. Ma. Similar programs also held at the villages of Libertad, Sto. Domingo and San Ignacio. In Libertad, 251 out of the 338 households were given CRs. In Sto. Domingo, 88 households got CRs out of 115; and in San Ignacio, 63 out of 127 households. The barangay chieftains of the three barangays namely Rogelio Canales, Jaime Baclohan and Felix Sano were

all thankful to their guests for helping them solve a health problem. Meanwhile, Thomas Howells, field manager of Save the Children for Western Leyte, said that the NGO would be operating hereabouts for a longish period yet. To effectively carry out their programs, he said they are closely coordinating with local officials because they are the people who know the needs of their people. Save the Children has seven teams working on various relief and rehabilitation, one of which is WASH. Andi Dyah, an Indonesian

national who heads the WASH team, also lauded the cooperation shown to them by local officials, saying he did not have any qualms about their security. They had always felt safe even if they went to remote areas because they were always welcomed warmly and that people hereabouts were very friendly. Save the Children is also working on other areas like Livelihood, Education, Shelter, Child Protection, Nutrition, and Health. Presentlyds, they have already helped around 150,000 Yolanda-affected people in Western Leyte alone. By Paul Libres

the rest could not use microphones. So, they used the “reverberations of caves or cathedrals or opera houses.” “Before tube amplifiers, the limits of our vocal chords made it difficult to speak to more than a thousand people at a time.” Would Hitler truly have been less of a dictator without a microphone? Innovations are never a simplistic tale of a lone inventor in a lab coming up with an earthchanging idea. It’s much more complicated than that. It takes someone like Steve Jobs or Thomas Edison, who is smart enough to notice many different innovations converging at the same time, and ambitious enough to build something no one else saw in those ideas. It’s rare think that someone’s explanations, like Johnson’s, could be more, not less, complicated.

FR. ROY ... from P. 4 death of the cross.” (Phil 2,5-8) This self-emptying is indispensable in our life. We need to do everything to be able to achieve that, obviously doing it also with utmost naturalness, the way Christ himself did it. He did not go around announcing he was the Redeemer. He just let his deeds and his miracles do the talking more than his words which were not lacking either. When some people wanted to proclaim him king, he escaped. When he had enter Jerusalem to claim his kingship, he rode on a donkey. We have to see the indispensable value of humility to nourish our faith, hope and charity that in turn would nourish our strong unity of life. It is this humility that enabled Christ to accept the will of his Father to offer his life on the cross for our salvation. “Father,” he said in the agony in the garden, “if it is your will, let this cup pass by me, but not my will but yours be done.” This submission of one’s will to God’s will is the ultimate expression of humility that allows faith, hope and charity to flourish and a unity of life to come as a consequence. P-NOY ... from P. 1 the approval of the city government for a parade permit in line with the celebration. This years’ preparation is jointly done by the provincial government and the national government through the National Historical Commission. Petilla added that “face lifting” for the monuments and immediate areas where the occasion will be held has been done but the rehabilitation of the entire park may take longer. The governor added that he also looks forward to the fact that the President himself will see the status of the ongoing rehabilitation here. Aside from gracing the Leyte Landing rites, Aquino is also expected to do site visits to various rehabilitation projects undertaken after typhoon Yolanda. He said that it would be better if the President sees with his two eyes the situation on the ground. In prior interviews, the governor cited improvement in the physical structure of the province although much is yet to be done. While waiting for the full-swing implementation of rehabilitation, the province has been relying on support from private sector support as well as local and international non-government organizations. COFFEE ... from P. 1 reported the matter to Philippine Medical Association president, Dr. Ma. Minerva P. Calimag, who said she would join the call to FDA as well. A check with the www.fda.gov.ph website shows that the Department of Health agency issued a warning against Sehat Badan on January 15, 2014 yet. The warning was followed with a series of raids at Cagayan de Oro, where the “coffee” was rather sold openly until it was banned. Nonetheless, the coffee drink continues to sell online, as the Ormoc patients claimed they sourced it from. In its January advisory, the FDA said “As advertised online, Sehat Badan is [a] herbal drink that ‘promotes and enhance general well-being and treat various diseases’ such as asthma, urinary stones, allergy, impotence, rheumatism, toothache and ulcer. These claims are not approved by the FDA as the subject product is not registered with this Office.” By July of 2014, the FDA found that the “coffee” tested positive for the presence of diclofenac sodium, ibuprofen and paracetamol. Dr. Arevalo said diclofenac sodium, ibuprofen and paracetamol are all antiinflammatory and analgesic drugs or “pain killers.” “Sehat Badan” drinkers might have felt better after drinking the coffee because these drugs could lessen the inflammation of their joints, and provide pain relief, especially for those with gouts and arthritis, she explained. Arevalo said that instead of curing them, the “coffee” might instead do further damage to their health, especially their liver and kidneys. If people took medicines with their doctors’ prescription, she said, the doses would have been regulated, but with the “coffee”, patients drank several cups in a day. Irresponsible and unregulated/excessive use of diclofenac sodium and ibupro-

fen are also known to cause stomach ulcers, which could lead to intestinal/ gastrointestinal bleeding. She is also wondering why almost all the patients they saw had the characteristic moon face and buffalo hump, which are manifestations of long-term steroid use. Hence, she wrote the FDA and asked them to conduct more tests. Meanwhile, she appealed to patients, as well as healthy individuals, not to fall into the trap of patronizing “health supplements” without scientific studies to support their use. She said that these products did not undergo clinical trials, unlike medicines that are subjected to various laboratory experiments, even human trials, before they are introduced into the market. Aside from this, she said, these “health supplements” also come out very expensive, compared to “maintenance medicines” doctors prescribe. She is also saddened to note that despite the FDA “warnings”, “Sehat Badan” continues to sell briskly online, aside from being carried by certain pharmacies and stores. A check with the Sehat Badan Coffee’s Facebook account indicates it still enjoys a brisk market. A Jocelyn Bauya of Abuyog, Leyte, on October 8, was asking how she could buy it. “No BPI bank in our municipality pwebe b sa LBC Abuyog nalang din kmi magbyad sa orders namin anyway lbc man yung pagpadala ninyo ng sehat badan cofee... magkano b yong 1 box ung 30 pcs tea ang laman...” She ignored reposts from an Eli Naroma about FDA warnings published in various outlets.
