A Taste of Freedom

A

t the end of this month we will be celebrating Freedom Day in South Africa in commemoration of the first post-apartheid elections that took place on 27 April 1994. For many South Africans today, freedom could mean financial security or assurance that our land will still be able to offer up its bounty for generations to come. It is for this reason that we return to our exploration of the concept of Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa in this month’s edition. For the lucky few (which includes you and me), freedom can come in many different forms. A journey through the wilderness, a transcendence of racial and cultural boundaries, or a weekend spent offline and in tune

can make almost anyone feel free. I felt free whilst driving through Sanbona Wildlife Reserve at sunset. Spending Sundays at the marvellous wine estates of the Western Cape comes a close second, while every night’s escape to a great piece of South African literature frees me from the trials of each day. Whatever it is that makes you feel free, we hope that you find it in these pages. Have a great April!

Traditionally regarded as a celebratory drink, Méthode Cap Classique has fast become the favoured tipple with meals, sundowners or at any social occasion. L’Ormarins, which forms part of the Anthonij Rupert Wines portfolio, has recently added a premium Brut Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) NV to its already highly acclaimed range of wines. The first-class MCC is made from a blend of Chardonnay (60%) and Pinot Noir (40%) grapes. The handcrafted wine is best described as elegant, fresh and rich in minerality. The Chardonnay yields a fresh lime character, accentuated by the high natural acidity, whilst the Pinot Noir provides hints of perfume notes. Available directly from the Cellar Door or in select specialist wine stores nationwide, Brut Méthode Cap Classique NV retails for approximately R110 per bottle. www.rupertwines.com

Wildlife Reserve, you’ll probably be making love in your luxury ‘tent’ (if you’re lucky enough to stay in the exquisite Dwyka Tented Lodge). There, I said it. Everything lends itself to romance in there – from the outdoor shower to the deep bath and the bed with a view of the stars. I’d get into a lot of trouble if I said that the rangers themselves might inspire romantic aspirations in the solo traveller, so I won’t mention it. If you’re not into wildlife or romance (which I wouldn’t believe but let’s pretend), you will no doubt fall in love with the food. Particularly the dessert. On a diet? That’s okay, there’s grazing for you too – after all, many a skinny celeb have visited the pristine reserve (beautiful people seem to enjoy beautiful places). The spa (superb in itself) will keep you entertained until the restaurant smells finally force you to relent. Forgive me if I get carried away with the personal, but the staff at Sanbona really did make me feel like an African queen living my very own little African dream. If you’re more into the science than the sensual/spiritual thing, you might be more impressed by these little tit-bits: • Suitable animal species such as springbok, kudu, eland, gemsbok, red hartebeest, Plains zebra, hippopotamus and elephant have been re-introduced to the semi-arid Sanbona to restore, once again, the ecological balance

I

knew I should have written this article whilst still at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in Montagu. Sitting in my little apartment in the suburbs, it’s difficult to imagine relaxing in a sparkling plunge pool on a private deck in the middle of a pristine expanse of Little Karoo wilderness. I tried to inspire the recollection with a recreation of the reserve’s signature ‘Sex in the Bush’ drink but that isn’t even helping to re-conjure the magic that is Sanbona. Let’s just put it this way – when last did you spend your Saturday morning hanging out with 2-week old cheetah cubs? Sanbona is no zoo and the cubs were completely wild, but we were able to sit about 20 metres from them thanks to the trusting and respectful relationship that our experienced ranger has built with their mother. When last did a wild elephant matriarch, perfect in stature and composure, extend her trunk to greet you in an open safari vehicle? Ever steered a boat (yes, such freedoms are afforded) through hippo territory? The guides at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve sure know what they’re doing. Wildlife encounters can’t be manipulated on 12 000 hectares of reserve. They happen organically and they happen spectacularly. When not enraptured by the magical beasts of Sanbona

• The type of fynbos found in Sanbona is known as renosterveld and is one of the most threatened habitats in the Cape Floristic region. • Sanbona is currently entering into a stewardship agreement with Cape Nature, which means that the reserve will be governed by the nature body’s strict conservational code of ethics. • Continental collisions, the submergence of the earth’s crust and the cataclysmic influence of the oceans have all contributed to Sanbona’s magnificent landscapes. • The rock art at Sanbona is the only remaining legacy of the /Xam, a clan of San Bushmen who inhabited the area over 3 million years ago. If you’re still not impressed, you may as well not bother to go on Safari at all. of the area by creating a natural stimulating disturbance on the environment and providing prey for predators such as leopard, brown hyena, caracal, jackal and African wildcat. • As the herds of game increased, so did available prey species for larger predators, and in 2003 conditions were ideal to re-introduce cheetahs and lions to the area. These predators now roam the plains of the Little Karoo for the first time in more than two centuries. • Sanbona is home to free, self-sustaining white lions (the original two were rescued from trophy hunting programs). • Sanbona – one of the only protected areas with a population of riverine rabbits – provides sufficient space and diversity of vegetation to sustain the natural ecological processes of the highly endangered species’ habitat and to protect it from the influence of agricultural activities and hunting. 18

under shady trees. One sweltering summer’s day, we chose to experience a picnic at the estate. The champagne we were served on arrival as well as our shady spot under the trees allowed our bodies to cool down in a game of catch-up with our minds, which were already completely enchanted and relaxed by the scenery. Amongst the most memorable things about Nederburg is the warm hospitality and relaxed yet luxurious ambience. We were lucky enough to enjoy perfect pairings with the estate’s widely acclaimed wines. The food was on a par with the wine, and it’s not often that we can say that immense creativity and attention to detail has been afforded to each dish. A salad is not just a salad at Nederburg. The cheese platter, cous cous, savoury tarts, sweet pastries and decadent chocolate brownies in our basket made for the best picnic we have enjoyed to date, and we will definitely be returning shortly!

Care for South Africa, Her People and Her Future Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa Text & Images: Š Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa

F

air Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) is all about creating a better future for South Africa and her people. FTTSA is a sustainable tourism certification label. Although human rights and community benefits are important pillars of the accreditation, environmental sustainability is also an essential criteria for businesses to meet in order to become FTTSA-certified. FTTSA has developed assessment criteria in adherence with the SANS 1162 and ISO 65 standards to ensure the highest quality of the FTTSA-label. FTTSA has certified over 70 businesses across South Africa to date. To make sure that your next holiday benefits both people and nature, choose an FTTSA-certified business. Businesses certified by FTTSA must comply with the following environmental sustainability criteria: Comply with all relevant national and local regulations in relation to planning, building and management of tourism infrastructure as well as in relation to trading in artefacts and wildlife products and to keeping wild animals captive. Ensure that buildings and infrastructure are built in a way that is consistent with locally-appropriate principles of sustainable construction. Monitor their consumption of resources (including consumables, water and energy) and implement measures to minimise this, especially the use of scarce and nonrenewable resources.

Identify operational areas where pollution is possible

(e.g. greenhouse gas and carbon emissions, wastewater and solid waste disposal, harmful chemical substances, erosion, ozone-depleting compounds, etc.) and implement measures to reduce and / or eliminate these sources of pollution. Ensure that interaction with wildlife is conducted in a way that avoids disturbance to wild animals and natural ecosystems. Invest in biodiversity conservation initiatives. Give preference to indigenous plants in landscaping and take measures to avoid the introduction of alien vegetation (especially invasive species). Be committed to improving environmental knowledge and awareness among staff, guests and the wider community, as appropriate to the business context. 30

It’s the little touches, though – like adding popcorn to the prawn dish - that keep it charming. Chef Vigar moved to South Africa from England in 2010. He has incorporated elements of the South African palette into his strongly French-influenced menu. His wife, South African-born Mari Vigar, told us that the idea behind La Mouette is to offer guests an amazing atmosphere coupled with amazing food. As she warmly explained, “We want you to enjoy La Mouette like we enjoy it.” Mari, her husband Henri and their business partner Gerrit Bruwer have been creating the La Moutte magic for over three years now. Mari often attends trade shows to build the restaurant’s wine list, which includes excellent South African wines and French Champagne. They have recently added Waterkloof Wines’ Circle of Life blends to their impressive list. We recently visited the Waterkloof farm and can attest to what a fine pair La Mouette and Waterkloof make. We really could taste the love in every forkful of food at La Mouette. Perhaps that’s why it felt so much like home. www.lamouette-restaurant.co.za.

t is little wonder that many guests from Seapoint’s luxurious hotels as well as a regular local clientele base often walk through the garden gate on Seapoint’s busy main road. On a strip of road that is often bustling with pedestrian and motor traffic throughout the year, the serenity inside is a real treasure. The restaurant’s sense of hospitality is evident in the small details. They serve their water in handmade Roman water glasses, for example, and each member of staff is warm and attentive to our every need. Chef Henry Vigar has created a superb menu. We enjoyed their summer menu, which boasted starters such as fine cheese and truffle croquettes served with roasted garlic aioli, and beef carpaccio served with wasabi mayonnaise, grilled spring onion, pickled mushrooms and tamarind dressing. For our main course, the chef and his team prepared Franschoek trout served with lightly smoked potato salad, pea puree and mint, and transitioned with ease into Moroccan-style lamb served with confit shoulder, crispy pastille, tabbouleh, smoked aubergine puree and tomato harissa. The mouth-watering dessert menu offers innovative treats such as gin and tonic jelly with lime ice-cream. Every bite of the La Moutte menu

fall into the latter group. I’ll hike if the view at the top is good and the journey there isn’t too strenuous. I don’t mind adrenaline, as long I don’t have to put in much effort to evoke it. I’d sooner jump off a mountain than climb to its peak. My kayaking expedition with Kayak Cape Town in Simon’s Town worked out splendidly. I took an active Andy with me and he enjoyed the physicality of paddling while I sat back and took in the scenery. And what scenery there was! From the jolly little penguins hanging out on the rocks to the sudden flight of hundreds of cormorants and a lucky sighting of a nearby seal, the journey was filled with friends and fancies to keep me entertained while my partner worked on his biceps.

We were lucky enough to go out during perfect conditions, and I almost tipped the kayak a couple of times whilst leaning as far over the edge as possible to see if I could spot the urchins at the bottom of the crystal clear water. Luckily the kayaks are sturdy as Gibraltar and no casualties ensued (although we did receive a thorough safety demonstration that saw us equipped for just about anything short of a whale attack). Our guide was patient and well-humoured, considering his reactions to the numerous occasions on which we almost tipped him out of his kayak. By the end of the tour, both paddler and explorer were satisfied – active A felt that he had done a good workout and I had lots of lovely photos and stories. They think of everything I could possibly need and pay special attention to detail, when it comes to my safety, security, privacy and comfort. Wherever I’m headed, NAC’s fleet of long and medium range jets and twin turbine aircraft get me there on time, without the added aggravation of having to deal with check-in queues, waiting for baggage or having to wade through red tape at airport terminals.” So if you’re considering chartering a flight, speak to NAC, and they’ll make you feel like an A-lister on the red carpet!” – Gabby van Staden, frequent charter client.

o candles, oils or ocean music. No heated towels, flower petals or Egyptian cotton. Just me, the oversized suit, a mattress and a magic lady. Don’t get me wrong, I love the bells and whistles of a regular spa pamper session. The right essential oil really can lift my spirits and I’m a sucker for the trickling water effect, but when my back gets sore it gets really sore. Enter Enmasse. The relatively obscure building on Cape Town’s Hope Street reveals nothing from the outside but a genuine world of intrigue on the inside. Everything is illuminated in the deepest blue, and each space seems to lead on to the next in a seamless and commendable feat of design. The building itself is old, regal even. The simplicity and flow seem almost post-modern – enlightened, if you’ll allow. The combination makes for a truly memorable space. I am somehow still apprehensive on arrival – it’s as if I have lost control of my senses, and I struggle to tie the traditional Thai garments around my waist. The fact that I am lead to a space (it’s no room) filled with strangers does

not offer any further reassurance. Luckily the beautiful woman who accompanies me to my designated mattress and separates the two of us from the other visitors is both gentle and firm in her approach to encouraging me to surrender to the experience. The ‘massage’. I can’t even call it that – it does it no justice. It’s more like an epiphany. I still don’t know what that little lady did to my body but the combination of deep stretch, fluctuating rhythm and pressure and innovative technique (innovative to the West, at least) awoke every little part of my body – from my ear to my hip to my forehead and my toe. I’m afraid I really can’t explain what exactly happened to me in that space and time. I could go into the traditions of Thai massage or the concept of the matrix in which Enmasse operates, but I somehow don’t think that will help either. You need to experience it for yourself. It’s not a pamper session. It’s an awakening. For more information or to make a booking, visit www.enmasse.co.za.

s it states on the blurb of Letters to my Children, Jonathan Jansen is a Professor and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State. He is a respected educationalist, author of a number of books and a prominent speaker on issues of transformation, reconciliation and educational change. I expected more from his latest release. The introduction to Letters to my Children is promising. Jansen thanks the great Maya Angelou for inspiring the work and mentions the thousands of social media followers that he gained over the year in which he posted the daily messages. If the ‘letters’ were just gifts to his own children, I would pass the collection off as another well-meaning father’s repetition of the platitudes that he himself had picked up somewhere along the road of life. Jansen’s posts, however, not only went out to his two children but to his 30 000 students at the University of the Free State. And they were published. Apparently the posts catalyzed online debate surrounding politics, sex and everything in between. The sub-title of the book hails the content as ‘Tweets to make you think’, but I would have sub-titled it as ‘Tweets to make you remember’, as I have already heard 95% of the sentiments expressed too many times before. Describing the book as ‘one of the most exciting ventures [he] has embarked on in many years’, Jansen believes that his ‘letters’ have added ‘complexity’ to existing narratives. Sure, there were a handful of messages that were particularly relevant to the South African context, and which I enjoyed reading. ‘Be cautious about people who call you comrade; they want something’ and ‘Speak more than one language; it will improve your love life’ have indeed stayed with me. As for the rest, though – I wish Jansen had stuck to his immediate context and not tried to add to the auspices of universal wisdom. Messages about human race as the only race, the triumph of soul over body, the joys of philanthropy, trusting you instincts, thinking for yourself and forgiving for your own benefit left me cold. I have heard them too many times before and expected such a lauded academic to at least word them in a more compelling manner. Perhaps I am just the wrong audience. I would recommend the book to parents with young children or ‘educationalists’ at primary/early high school level. For those who hear them for the first time, the messages could prove invaluable. For the rest of us, though – better to read Angelou’s book instead. www.panmacmillan.co.za.
