VAMIZI ISLAND LODGE

W

elcome to Maluane – one of the last truly pristine and unspoiled places in the world. The area remains this way through a combination of scientificallybased conservation projects and sustainable, low-impact tourism. A vast conservation area in the Quirimbas Archipelago in Northern Mozambique, Maluane aims to combine luxurious adventure tourism on land and at sea with the development of local communities and the protection of exceptional natural resources. It is a unique combination of virgin inland safari area and untouched coral-ringed islands. Maluane comprises three Indian Ocean Islands, and 30 kilometers of beach that, in turn, gives onto a 33,000-hectare wildlife safari area – the Messalo Wildlife Area. Few places can offer such variety, privacy, beauty and security. Vamizi Island Lodge, the first of the Maluane Lodges, opened in December 2005. The spectacular 24-bed lodge is built on the northern side of the island and looks towards Rongui from the end of a long beautiful powder-sand beach.

The lodge comprises ten separate beach villas, each with its own large living room, spectacular bathroom and breezy veranda; two villas can accommodate four guests, the rest of the villas take just two guests. The villas are all secluded from each other and look out to sea from the shade of the forest that forms the centre of the island. The roofs of the lodge are makuti (palm) thatch, based on the Mozambican style, and the emphasis is on space and openness, so the rooms are large, with high ceilings, and there is a large paddle fan above the bed and one in the central area. There is no air conditioning. The bathrooms have a solid slab of marble forming the wall of the shower, and hand-carved screens which provide the privacy and aesthetic detail of a Zanzibar palace. The bedrooms have king-size beds – four-posters – with free-standing frames draped in beautiful natural muslin mosquito nets. The burnt orange curtains are a fine muslin fabric, which billows softly in the wind and complements the indigo and natural colours in the room.

to chose from, to encourage guests to relax wherever they wish. There is constant 220v power to the rooms from a generator, and a room safe, hairdryer and a selection of drinks are available in the rooms. High chairs, camping cots and a baby-sitting service can be arranged with prior notification. The lodge restaurant offers contemporary international cuisine, with a variety of dishes with emphasis on fresh seafood including lobster, prawns, calamari, crab and assorted fish. Special dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notification.

The private lounges lead off from the bedrooms like giant verandas, with deep cane couches and colonial-style planters chairs. Masses of cushions bring colour and texture to the rooms and encourage you to sink deep into them, put your feet up and relax into the lazy comfort of your surroundings. All furniture in the rooms, the dining room, and the central lounge/bar area has been designed and mostly custom-made, incorporating traditional carvings reflecting the Arabic influence in the area. The outside decks and private beaches have a selection of loungers, swinging beds and local Swahili ‘day beds’

T

he South Luangwa Valley in Zambia is one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas. Famed for its excellent opportunities for observing lion, leopard, elephant and other big game, the remote and unspoiled part of Zambia was the scene of a very special project undertaken 20 years ago. In April 1994, two much loved young adult leopards were released in the South Luangwa Valley by a young game ranger named Graham Cooke. Graham had been living with the leopards in the South African lowveld for a full year before he decided to return Boycat and his sister Poepface to the wild in the Valley. Graham pitched a small and very secluded tented camp on a remote island on the Luangwa River for the last stages of the cubs’ rehabilitation and it was here that Boycat and Poepface tentatively ventured into the wilderness of their new home. Joining the cubs on daily walks to familiarise them with the new environment, Graham braved some of the area’s most dangerous animals. After about a month Boycat and Poep were ready to leave the safety that the small camp provided and crossed the river into the National Park to start their life in the wild. For Graham, it was time to let go… Author Fransje van Riel chronicled Graham’s story in the book My Life with Leopards - Graham

The Healing Earth Organic Spa Concept 38

Ultimate guide to Africa - for Luxury Travel

After decades of working in the global spa industry, Elisabeth Brandt came to realize the international demand for pure, natural spa products and therapies sourced from the rich natural wealth of the African continent. Through her passion and determination to share the healing capabilities of Africa with the world, Elisabeth founded Healing Earth – a premium African spa brand that offers natural, organic products, therapies and spa concepts to discerning clients the world over.

F

rom the depths of her roots to the tops of her trees, Africa offers a wealth of pristine natural ingredients. Healing Earth harnesses the restorative powers of the continent’s rich natural resources, lovingly creating pure organic products that are free from synthetic fragrances, colourants, petro chemicals, DEA, preservatives and parabens. Containing only the purest natural active ingredients, the indigenous, botanical skincare products are created from Africa’s powerful minerals, oceans, flowers, herbs, fruit, seeds and natural oils. Healing Earth is not just about beauty on the outside, but about the source of inner wellbeing and the delicate balance between mind and body. The brand celebrates the power of aromatherapy and human touch, and all products and treatments are developed not only for their beauty-boosting properties but also for their soothing effect on stress and other emotional dis-ease. Healing Earth advocates a nurturing, conscious approach to beauty that is based on love for oneself, one’s fellow human beings and the

precious earth. Passionate about environmental and social responsibility, the brand not only offers pure organic solutions, but also packages these in 100% recyclable and biodegradable materials. All Healing Earth ingredients are bought from local farmers at Fairtrade prices, and the company employs previously disadvantaged workers wherever possible. The earth- and peoplefriendly brand is also animal-friendly, and neither the products nor their ingredients are tested on animals. All Healing Earth products have been developed by leading cosmetic scientists to ensure that they are not only harmless, but also effective. GAME RESERVE HOPPING IN ZIMBABWE "You’ve ticked Victoria Falls off your bucket list, but Zimbabwe still has a wealth of game reserves worth exploring. Not only do these wildernesses shelter a great diversity of animals, but less crowding and excellent guiding at some impressive lodges make appreciating them that much sweeter."

lthough not known as a big game reserve, this UNESCO World Heritage Site just south of Bulawayo is venerated for its dramatic rock formations: red-tinged rock outcrops; gigantic, grey, smooth-surfaced “whalebacks”; and towering **kopjes** of balancing granite boulders and pillars. This visual drama is compounded by the thrill of getting close to some of the world’s highest concentrations of leopard and rare black eagles, as well as the chance to explore caves and rocky overhangs which preserve ancient

San paintings (over 2,000 sites have been recorded here). Also here, is the high-altitude grave of archimperialist, Cecil John Rhodes, at a thrilling location known as the View of the World. Built between huge granite boulders on a 300-acre concession within Matobo, rooms at Camp Amalinda (www.campamalinda.com) are thatched chalets incorporating the very rock that makes this park famous. Even the enormous pool is a depression in the granite whaleback that forms part of the property.

MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK Mana is Shona for “four”, which refers to four large pools, remnants of ox-bow lakes carved out by the Zambezi River thousands of years ago. Here, in the Middle Zambezi Valley in northern Zimbabwe, hippos, crocs, and large numbers of aquatic birds flourish. And yet, Mana Pools remains a well-guarded secret. It is a remote UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of Africa’s best parks for walking safaris thanks to relatively relaxed big game and sparse undergrowth. Another exciting way to experience the region’s natural abundance is by floating down the river in a canoe, particularly between Mana Pools and Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. It can be a heady adventure, tactfully paddling past rivercrossing elephants, and avoiding wallowing hippos and lurking crocodiles as you go. Just beyond Mana Pools’ western boundary

46

Ruckomechi Camp (www.wilderness-safaris.com) comprises ten large reed-and-thatch tented chalets sheltered beneath a grove of acacia and mahogany trees. There are various spots from which to enjoy the view, whether lazing in a hammock, sunbathing alongside the infinity pool, or gazing up at the stars from a cushioned deck. Each of the six big tented chalets at Kanga Bush Camp (www.africanbushcamps.com) has views of remote, isolated Kanga Pan, a year-round water source regularly visited by thirsty animals. One adventurous add-on is an overnight sleep-out on a platform with a mattress, raised on stilts beneath wild fig trees, 1 km from camp. Kanga’s colonial-style Zambezi Life Styles is a semi-permanent camp set up on the banks of the Zambezi, channelling the atmosphere of Hemingway-era mobile safaris.

Lake Kariba is a name familiar to most, yet few know of Matusadona, a reserve along the lake’s southern shore. Sunsets over the lake, with the Matusadona Mountains in the background, are spectacular, with incredible birdlife year-round. From November to April, great numbers of migratory birds also arrive just as resident species don their breeding plumage. Also at the shore are large buffalo herds, along with elephant, hippo, waterbuck, sable and roan antelope, lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, as well as a few black rhino. You can spot many of these animals from the water on boat or canoe trips as you explore the lake’s narrow creeks and inlets. On a private concession on the lake’s edge, tented Changa Safari Camp (www.changasafari.com) is designed to merge with its surroundings,

incorporating natural materials, thatch roofs, and the shelter of trees and surrounding bush. It has been dutifully decorated with locally made furniture and authentically rustic-looking detailing in natural material, so you never forget you’re in Africa. Another option is Musango (www. musangosafaricamp.com), a small safari camp in a beach-like setting on an offshore island close to the reserve. Its chief draw is owner, Steve Edwards, an esteemed guide who formerly served as Matusadona’s head warden. He manages the camp and comes with considerable knowledge – he’ll even show you where he discovered dinosaur fossils.

HWANGE NATIONAL PARK Bordering Botswana, Hwange is Zimbabwe’s biggest reserve, with terrain ranging from semi-desert scrub and saltpans in the south, to forests, savannah, granite hills and Mopane woodlands in the north. Once the royal hunting grounds of the Ndebele warrior-king Mzilikazi, it’s been a national park since 1929. It’s a prolific Big Five destination, said to have the highest diversity of mammals of any national park in the world, not to mention one of the biggest elephant populations anywhere. Over 400 species of birds (including some 50 varieties of raptor) have been recorded here. Best viewings happen during the August – October dry season, when the wildlife congregates around the shrunken water holes. In a large, game-rich private concession within Hwange, Makalolo Plains Camp (www. wilderness-safaris.com) consists of ten very comfortable tented rooms overlooking the Somavundla Pan, where elephant herds and predators are easily spotted.

48

A touch more exclusive are the six tented chalets at newer, smaller, smarter Little Makalolo, in a teak forest 20 minutes away. Also facing a busy watering hole, it’s arguably Hwange’s most comfortable safari camp, with the benefit of exceptional guiding, either by vehicle or on foot. Elevated hides with only mosquito nets between you and the stars are also available for sleep-out adventures. Within a camelthorn acacia grove at the edge of the long dry Sumamalisa Vlei to the east of Hwange, Somalisa (www.africanbushcamps.com) is an intimate bush camp of six tents spaciously laid out in a horseshoe pattern. Instead of electricity, at night it’s lit up with paraffin lamps to romantic effect. Regularly touted as Zimbabwe’s best tented safari camp, The Hide (www.thehide.com) lies in Hwange’s northeast, and boasts a dependable on-site waterhole luring animals so you can scrutinize them from the comfort of a wooden deck, your bath, or the pool.

them within the park, plus a healthy wild dog population. Elevated atop a cliff, Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge (www.chilogorge.com) has fantastic views over the Save River below and Ghonarezhou beyond. Lying just outside the park, the lodge was relaunched after a complete refurbishment in 2012, and it’s looking great. Within Malilangwe, a vast private wildlife reserve bordering Gonarezhou, Singita Pamushana (www.singita.com) is hands down Zimbabwe’s most lavish game lodge. Overlooking the Malilangwe River and sheltered by a canopy of trees, the lodge virtually disappears into its environment. While accommodations and amenities are ostentatious, there’s no denying the effortless connection with the primordial land you’ve come to visit. Highly personalised guiding includes morning and afternoon drives, boat safaris and fishing trips, black rhino tracking, excursions to rock art sites, and a private hide in the bush where you can stay overnight.

The “place of many elephants”, Gonarezhou is a gigantic swath of Zimbabwean lowveld in the southeast, adjoining South Africa and Mozambique. Besides an unspoilt wilderness of acacias, ironwood and mahogany trees, it’s the impressive red sandstone cliffs of Chilojo that get much of the attention. Beneath these are the Runde River Valley floodplains, knotted with lagoons and cut through with riverine forest. Three major rivers – Runde, Save, and Mwenezi – flow through the reserve, creating pools and natural oases that lure animals and birds. Gonarezhou forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which includes the Kruger National Park and Mozambique’s Gaza Park. Still relatively unknown, Gonarezhou suffered greatly in the past due to poaching, conflict across the Mozambican border, and a devastating drought in the 1990s. But there’s a revival, and although the elephants have traditionally had cause to be distrustful of humans, they’re steadily becoming habituated to safari vehicles. There are around 10,000 of

ost renowned for its glamorous weddings, high quality wines and memorable dining experience, the venue was named after the avenue of majestic blue gums that marks its entrance. Over the years it has come to showcase the best of the relaxed lifestyle of the Cape Winelands, treating visitors of all ages to dynamic and personal wine tastings, bistro-style dining, family picnics, beautiful function and conference venues and exclusive country accommodation. Although steeped in tradition, Allée Bleue is

constantly evolving its offering. Over the past decade the working farm has also grown into a flourishing commercial herb business that grows and harvests everything from rocket to rosemary for some of the biggest retailers in South Africa. Most of the herbs are grown hydroponically in tunnels for protection and to ensure a constant supply of high quality produce throughout the year. Hydroponic farming means that the herbs are grown in a medium other than soil.

In this case coco peat – coconut husk that has been composted and treated – is used. All the nutrients are supplied directly to the coco peat through a drip irrigation system. Allée Bleue hosts herb tours every Friday. The guided explorations offer visitors insight into what it takes to nurture herbs from seedlings to fully grown, harvest-ready plants. Guests can of course conclude the tour with a delicious three-course, herb-inspired lunch paired with some of the estate’s award-winning wines. The Allée Bleue farm also produces olives, coldpressed extra virgin olive oil and export fruit. The owners’ vision has always been to create a natural synergy between the estate’s bounty and the country lifestyle which it offers. Allée Bleue recently opened a marche (French for ‘market’) to guests, selling potted herbs, fresh herbs, olive oil, olives, freshly baked breads and, of course, wine to visitors. For the cold winter months, the dynamic estate is offering a hearty pizza and pasta experience. Head Chef Ian Laubsher and Chef Craig Cormack have drawn inspiration from the valley’s local produce, including of course the estate’s very own array of fresh herbs harvested daily. The Chefs’ back to basics approach sees fresh local ingredients combined to tempt tastebuds with delights the likes of smoked feta, biltong spiced beef, chorizo, parma ham and Allée Bleue red wine reduction. A decadent Allée Bleue meal can be followed by an evening of luxurious accommodation in the estate’s exquisitely restored Manor House or Kendall Cottage. ituated just three hours’ drive from Cape Town, the 36 000 hectare De Hoop conservation area forms part of a World Heritage site. The Marine Protected area, one of the largest in Africa, extends a further three nautical miles (5 km) out to sea. The shoreline offers some of the best whale viewing opportunities in the world, with 40 % of the global Southern Right Whale population using it as an annual breeding ground. In peak season (June to November) between 80 to 300 whales can be seen in the bay. De Hoop Nature Reserve also forms part

of the world’s smallest and most threatened plant kingdom – the Cape Floral Kingdom. The Bredasdorp/Agulhas and Infanta area, of which De Hoop forms a part, has an estimated 1500 of the approximately 9000 plant species found in the Cape Floristic Region. Of these 1500 species, 108 are rare or threatened, 34 occur only in De Hoop Nature Reserve, and 14 are recently discovered and thus still un-described. The reserve’s many terrestrial habitats support a diversity of animal groups. It is home to 86 mammal species - most notably the rare bontebok and the Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, grey rhebuck, baboon, yellow mongoose, caracal and the occasional leopard. De Hoop is famous for its variety of resident and migratory birds, and more than 260 species have been recorded on the reserve. Among the 260 bird species are the endemic African black oystercatcher, the rare Damara and Caspian terns, the vulnerable Cape griffon vulture and Stanley’s bustard, and the globally threatened blue crane. The De Hoop Vlei, which spreads between 17 and 19 kilometres when full, is a Ramsar site of international importance, where aquatic birds such as the pelican and flamingo

as well as other organisms can breed and feed without disturbance. The reserve is also the only remaining Western Cape breeding colony of the rare Cape vulture. De Hoop Nature Reserve has great scientific value as a research centre, as it one of the country’s last remaining natural areas and serves as a benchmark for measuring environmental change elsewhere. From camping and caravanning sites and affordable self-catering chalets to more luxurious self-catering cottages and upmarket fully catered lodges, the De Hoop Collection accommodation offers something for everyone. Activities on the reserve include hiking, mountain biking, eco quad biking, land-based whale watching, bird watching and star gazing, to name a few. The De Hoop Collection caters for weddings, conferences, team-building weekends and other bespoke events. With all this and more on offer, De Hoop can only be described as a nature lover’s paradise. Our remoteness is a big USP, as we virtually have our own gate and almost exclusive use of an area of the park, which is one of Southern Africa’s finest game viewing destinations.” The lodge’s position inside a forest reserve at the edge of the park allows for a host of unique guest experiences, including spontaneous game walks, boat safaris, night drives, and bush dinners under the stars – things not strictly allowed inside the park and therefore not available to most other lodges and hotels in the area. he success of the estate’s holistic method can be attributed to the open-minded and creative approach of proprietor Johnathan Grieve, whose thirst for knowledge is unquenchable. On the 300-year-old family-owned farm in the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, no life form is considered “bad”, and nothing is eradicated. On the contrary, Grieve strives to create conditions that are conducive to more life. “Biodiversity, or the variety of life in an ecosystem, is a tangible measure of the health and balance of a particular habitat,” he explains. “It’s important because each species, from the lowliest microbe to a human being, plays a distinct role in keeping the planet running smoothly.”

energies to stimulate healthy growth in the vines and improve the quality of the environment and therefore the grapes. The natural processes continue in the cellar, an ultra-modern gravity-flow installation that ensures the highest-quality slow wines with the least negative impact on the wine and the environment. Only natural wild yeasts are used, and there is minimum added sulphur. “It’s taken us a number of years to refine our winemaking process and to create the extraordinary wines we aimed for when we started farming here in 1996,” says Grieve. “It’s an extraordinary process, complex and slow, but ultimately rewarding. BioLOGIC® allows us to do no harm to our natural environment while producing hand-crafted wines that are truly exceptional.” Avondale produces seven wines: Camissa, a rosé; Cyclus, a refreshing white blend; Anima, a lively Chenin Blanc; La Luna, a classic red blend; Samsara, a Syrah; Navitas, the flagship red blend; and Armilla, a sparkling wine made in the Méthode Cap Classique tradition. Avondale offers eco tours of the farm, during which visitors can share the insight and inspiration of Grieve’s BioLOGIC approach to winemaking. For more information visit www.avondalewine. co.za or www.biologicwine.co.za.

Grieve pioneered the organic-biodynamicscientific approach he calls BioLOGIC®. It works as a dynamic system in which soil, water, plants, animals, people, and energy are part of a complex web of relationships and networks, interconnected and interdependent. Guided by the Avondale ethos of “Terra est vita” (“Soil is life”), Grieve bases his system on the simple but profound principle that healthy soil produces healthy plants. “We look at broad-spectrum natural nutrition; in essence, we want to feed not only the plants but all the soil life. We do this through using things like concentrated sea solids, which have a perfectly balanced nutrition with up to 90 elements, and our major source of nitrogen is through incorporating legumes in our cover cropping. If we create the perfect environment for soil life and feeding this life, it will in turn supply all the nutrition that our vines need, in perfect balance and plant-available form.” In order to enhance the farm’s unique energy and sustain an awareness of its special place in the cosmos, Grieve also uses a full spectrum of biodynamic methods and preparations. These include following an astronomic planting calendar, which takes into account the influence of various cosmic forces on our natural environment; and using a “field broadcaster” energy device that works with natural cosmic

S

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.

02 Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
