I

t’s hard to believe that the silly season is already upon us. Although idealised as a time for family, rest and recreation, the end-of-year festivities have, for many, become synonymous with restless children, arguing relatives and the ever-increasing pressures of 21st century gifting. Gone are the days in which a simple shared meal, a plate of cookies under a tree and a stocking concealing a toy train were enough to satisfy the festive fanatics (children and adults alike). Today your meal needs to be of the most diverse and decadent sort, Santa Claus can be exposed at a click and the stocking needs to contain an electronic device with a train app. In this month’s edition we offer suggestions of ways in which to escape the hype and enjoy a truly restful break. One of the best ways in which to do this is by reconnecting to nature. From following leopards deep in the Okavango Delta and watching

the sunset from a timeless cruiseliner on the Zambezi River to disappearing into the wilderness reserves, mountains and countryside of South Africa, we explore the best in nature-centric escapes. For those who prefer to experience the healing properties of Africa from a chic city destination, we investigate the best in local spa wisdom. Our celebrity chef shares a simple yet delicious festive recipe and we look for the perfect wine in Stellenbosch. We hope that you enjoy a peaceful festive season, mindfully enjoying even the smallest of pleasures with the ones you love. Merry Christmas!

Tintswalo Safari Lodge rewarded for excellence

Tintswalo Lodges’ emphasis on service excellence was recently reaffirmed when Tintswalo Safari Lodge received a Lilizela Service Excellence Award. The prestigious award was presented by South African Minister of Tourism Marthinus Van Schalkwyk. From mouth-watering cuisine to breath-taking views and unparalleled service offerings, the lodge treats guests to a truly sublime experience. Lanzerac Wine Estate scooped the titles of Best Value Red and Best Value White for its Alma Mater Red and White at the recent 2014 Best Value Wine Awards. The wines were part of a line-up of approximately 1 000 wines on the tasting table retailing at less than R80 a bottle. Of these, 472 were found to offer the best quality-to-price ratio and worthy of inclusion in the 2014 edition of the Best Value Wine Guide.

The recently-released wines to come out of the Lanzerac portfolio are part of a trio consisting of the Alma Mater Rosé, the Alma Mater White and the Alma Mater Red. The uncomplicated wines are full of fruit, with a juicy mouth feel and soft tannins. The wines are available directly from the Tasting Room as well as from select retail outlets nationwide, and retail for approximately R49 per bottle. www. lanzeracwines.co.za

here are few natural wonders as synonymous with Africa’s raw wilderness as this stretch of untamed water. The Chobe River divides Botswana’s Chobe National Park from Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, and its serene banks boast one of the densest populations of wildlife on the African continent. The Chobe National Park sprawls across some 11,000km² of lush African bush. It is home to the largest elephant population in the world, currently estimated at around 120,000. Elephants by the dozen often come down to the river to drink and play. Prides of lion and leopard and huge herds of buffalo and antelope also wander the riverbanks, while hippos and crocodiles regularly appear from the river. An adventure unlike any other awaits on this great expanse of water. Part of the renowned Mantis Collection, an international group of 40 exceptional destinations around the world, the Zambezi Queen operates in contemporary luxury, pampering its guests with elegant, personalised comfort in

the heart of the African wilderness. From the moment you arrive by boat to a warm chorus of song led by the local staff, your wish is the Zambezi Queen’s command. Drinks are served upstairs on the top deck while you familiarise yourself with the beautiful luxury vessel. The Zambezi Queen was completely overhauled and rebuilt on the riverbank in Kasane and floated into her maiden voyage in November 2009. Now she is a sophisticated lady. On her top deck is a superbly stocked bar, an intimate but open dining area and a comfortable lounge. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors offer superb wildlife viewing and lead onto the pool deck. The middle deck is entirely dedicated to suites, which continue onto the lower deck. There are ten suites and four master suites in all. All boast a sophisticated safari look and are en suite with king-sized or twin beds, private balconies and air-conditioning for those hot summer afternoons. Full length sliding shutters offer privacy and protection from the

The Queen, however, is not just a pretty face. She is smart, and she is green, in line with the Mantis Group’s commitment to sustainable, responsible tourism. To help preserve the environment, the boat uses a jet propulsion system rather than conventional propellers, which reduces damage to the river bed and enables the boat to operate in very shallow water. At night, the Zambezi Queen switches over to a battery power system for lighting, refrigerators and other requirements, so that guests can enjoy the sounds of the bush rather than the hum of machines. Solar panels help provide hot water, while taps and showers incorporate the most advanced water saving designs available. Fair Trade Tourism EXPANDS INTO THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN REGION Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) is a non-profit organisation that promotes responsible tourism in southern Africa and beyond. They do this by growing awareness about responsible tourism to travellers; assisting tourism businesses to operate more sustainably and by facilitating a Fair Trade Tourism certification programme across southern Africa. The programme was developed 10 years ago in South Africa and became the first tourism certification programme in Africa to be recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Tourism businesses that adhere to the FTT standard use the FTT label as a way of signifying their commitment to fair and responsible tourism. This includes fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing and operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and the environment.

FTT is for travellers who want to make a difference. Being a responsible traveller means having an amazing experience while at the same time giving back to the people and the environment you visited. It is a commitment to honouring the people and places that made your holiday happen.

Expansion into the southern African region was launched in Antananariva, Madagascar, in June 2013. Twelve accommodation establishments in Madagascar are now busy with submission of their online applications, following which onsite audits will be scheduled by FLO-Cert, FTT’s contracted certification body. It is anticipated that the first FTT-certified businesses in Madagascar will be featured at Indaba 2014! Thereafter the programme will be extended to other countries within the southern and East African region.

By selecting an FTT-certified business, you make a valuable contribution to the people directly affected by your travel choices. This includes employees at certified businesses and also local communities and the environment. You will leave feeling not only relaxed and recharged but fulfilled and rewarded too. For a full list of FTT-certified tourism businesses – or to learn more about how to become certified – go to www.fairtradetourism.org.za. Feel the difference – make a difference!

We welcome you with open arms and hearts and the warmest, widest of smiles!

Come and experience our hospitality wherever you go and get in touch with our wide variety of fascinating cultures and local traditions. Experience the region’s natural wonders and the rhythm and soul of Africa. Witness our regal wildlife and go on an unforgettable journey through our ancient and recent past.

You can now experience the best of Africa AND contribute to the country and her people! This has been made possible through the introduction of the world’s first Fair Trade Tourism certification programme. Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) certifies tourism businesses such as hotels, activities and attractions – from backpackers to fivestar lodges, township tours to whale watching cruises, adrenalin-filled activities, to botanical gardens. The certification uses a set of standards linked to global Fair Trade criteria, combined with locally relevant issues.

ituated on 70,000 acres of pristine wilderness, Samara Private Game Reserve is one of the largest in South Africa. Being so vast, it offers guests both a truly unique perspective on space and a gentle reminder of our human insignificance when compared to places like the Karoo. The

reserve encompasses the southern flank of the Sneeuberg mountain range and is located around 55 kilometres from Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa. Experiencing Samara is all about connecting with the natural environment of this semi-arrid landscape. For 15 years the team at Samara has been working to restore the biodiversity of the Great Karoo and to support its human and animal populations through judicious land management, sound environmental policies and enlightened employment ethics with a view to sustainability for generations to come. Encompassing four of South Africa’s seven biomes, Samara’s abundant wilderness preserves a complex and diverse ecosystem, providing habitat for over 60 mammal species. Among the more common species such as the kudu and duiker, the secretive aardvark and the onceendangered white rhino as well as desert adapted black rhino roam the area. Giraffes can be seen peeking over the thorny acacia canopy, whilst cheetahs hide in the grass, waiting for an opportunity to stretch their legs and test the speed of the hartebeest. Whether ensconced in the comfort of an open game vehicle or trekking through the fragrant Karoo bush, guests will feel the deep pulse of the Karoo that makes Samara truly magical. The Mountain Retreat lodge at Samara is an exclusive venue that can accommodate up to ten guests in three delightfully classic double en-suite bedrooms in the main homestead and a further two en-suite bedrooms in the beautifully-restored Victorian barn. A comfortable living room with fireplace and dining room spill out onto a wide wrap-around veranda that provides the perfect space for relaxing while contemplating the view. A jacuzzi on the veranda affords an ideal cooling-off spot. Delicious homecooked meals are served in various venues – the diningroom, on the veranda or under the stars in the boma. One can choose from a host of activities, including exploring the ancient valley landscape where rare rock art paintings of cheetah are preserved. Experienced rangers are available not only for game drives but for accompanying guests on a variety of unique experiences, including a walking safari, an aardvark safari and various biome walks. There is also a special Children on Safari package for the young ones. While the other lodges on the reserve include the colonial-style Karoo Lodge and the luxurious Manor House, the Mountain Retreat offers the perfect family escape and guarantees that you will leave behind the hustle and bustle and return to a slower pace in the midst of true wilderness. The ‘Big 7’ can be found here, including the elusive Addo lions, southern right whales and great white sharks along the coastline. The Park is also a haven for bird watchers – over 165 species have been recorded in the Addo surrounds. Encompassing a variety of biomes, from arid Karoo vegetation to lush forests, the Park is the third largest in South Africa. Gardening enthusiasts and rose lovers marvel at the roses in the area. Mixed with the scent of roses is that of orange orchards. Kirkwood – the largest town on the greater Addo route – is known as the citrus capital of the Eastern Cape and exports approximately 18 million

nspired by the ancient energy, healing powers and natural richness of mother Africa, Healing Earth Spas make use of a new generation of scientifically researched and internationally recognized natural organic skin and body care products that contain unique blends of indigenous pure botanical and essential oils from Africa’s varied and abundant plant kingdom.

Healing Earth products contain no artificial colourants, chemicals, parabens, petrochemicals, synthetics or other harmful ingredients. Only pure organic botanicals and indigenous plant extracts are used in the holistic collection. The products have not been tested on animals and are not part of unfair trade but rather supported by local organic farmers. Only the highest quality pure organic essential and indigenous oils are used. Healing Earth Spas make use of the Earth Soul and Pinotage ranges. Earth Soul products are influenced by Africa’s wealth of healing plants, herbs and seeds. The sensuous collection includes body polishes, oils, butters, creams and wraps. Five key ingredients make up the range: kalahari melon (hydrating), African ginger (firming), African potato, marula and neroli (repairing), mongongo nut (detoxifying) and coffee, cinnamon and orange (smoothing). The Pinotage range makes use of grapes as the main ingredient and focuses on the face, with a variety of cleansing, toning, exfoliating and mask products complemented with face serums, day and night creams, hand, foot and eye care products and body oils. Pinotage acts as a defense against environmental factors and successfully combines the strong anti-oxidant qualities of Vitamin C and E and an abundance of natural African botanicals. Furthermore, Pinotage contains the most potent source of Porathocyanids, OPC – the best form of antioxidants available, which are at least 50 times stronger than Vitamin E and enhance the protective function of the skin as well as aiding in cell renewal.

Tracking

Leopards in Botswana

with the Leopard ID Project

Text: Lara Potgieter Images: © Guy Ellis (www.GuyEllisPhotography.com)

It’s no secret that travel writers are blessed with ample journeys and adventures throughout the course of their careers. I have been on countless safaris and stayed in some of Southern Africa’s best game lodges, but crying (tears of joy) on a game drive vehicle and wanting to spend all night in the company of apex predators are things I had never experienced before accompanying the Leopard ID Project on an expedition to Botswana last month.

request that isn’t “impossible or illegal”. Fully aware of the elusive nature of leopards, I had kept the expectations surrounding my trip with The Leopard ID Project in check, hoping to see at least one leopard during our four days in the beautiful Okavango Delta. When I found out that we were not staying in a fenced reserve but in an unfenced expanse of wilderness, my hopes dissipated to the sighting of a few tracks at best. As soon as we arrived at the beautiful and truly ecofriendly Machaba Camp on the Khwai River, we headed out to survey the area with no less than three private wildlife and tracking experts. We saw our first leopard within the first hour. Not only was her beauty and grace awe-inspiring, she sported a healthy little cub at whom she allowed us to marvel. This was the first of over 20 similarly marvellous sightings of no fewer than 10 individual leopards, each of whom was photographed for the database. Perhaps I should clarify the term ‘sighting’. We did not see the ends of tails disappear into bushes. We watched mothers grooming cubs and males dragging impala up

trees. We were even honoured with a special visit from a particularly curious cat, who slowly approached the vehicle and gave us all a good sniff before continuing on her way. The experience was nothing less than mind-blowing. The fact that I was in the company of true leopard lovers was undeniable. Despite being tracking geniuses and treasure troves of facts about the species, our rangers and experts displayed a clear affinity towards the majestic creatures, encouraging us to do things like close our eyes to listen to the soft footsteps of a leopard walking near the vehicle. Returning to Machaba Camp after each day’s adventures was also a highlight. We were always warmly welcomed, and our every need taken care of by the friendly and attentive staff. Delicious dinners under the stars, traditional entertainment and spacious luxury tents overlooking the river are just some of Machaba’s sterling offerings. T

he South African festive season is strongly influenced by the British chapter of its colourful history. Overindulgence in the decadent delights of Christmas is inevitable. I learned years ago to embrace the decadence and simply enjoy the gastronomic gluttony in all its glory! With this in mind, a boozy combination of well-loved brandy and chocolate truffles accompanied by a proudly South African liquor aptly named Cape Velvet seemed the perfect heart-stopping recipe for an African-flavoured Christmas feature.

1. Soak raisins in brandy for two hours. 2. Melt chocolate in a glass bowl set over a pot of simmering water. 3. When the chocolate is smooth, slowly stir in the cream (still over the heat). 4. Stir in the brandy raisins and any leftover brandy. 5. Remove mixture from heat and gently fold in the sifted icing sugar. 6. Place a piece of Clingfilm on the surface of the mixture. 7. Refrigerate for two hours until chocolate mix is the consistency of play dough. 8. Place the cocoa powder, almonds and vermicelli onto separate plates. Spoon out large marble-sized dollops of chocolate paste and roll quickly between your palms to form rough balls. 9. Coat ten balls in cocoa, the next ten in almonds and the last ten in vermicelli. 10. Return your truffles to the refrigerator for a further two hours until hardened.

Truffles (makes 30) • 1/2 cup (125ml) raisins or currants • 4 tbsp (60ml) brandy • 350g dark chocolate • ½ cup (125ml) cream • ¾ cup (180ml) icing sugar • ¼ cup (60ml) cocoa powder • ¼ cup (60ml) flaked and toasted almonds • ¼ cup (60ml) dark chocolate vermicelli

Cape Velvet • 1 can sweetened condensed milk • 1/16 cup instant coffee powder • 1/16 cup vanilla essence • 1 can evaporated milk • 1 and 5/8 cup brandy Mix all ingredients together and bottle. Keep refrigerated and serve as is or over crushed ice. Simple but decadent in every way, this dessert is sure to be the highlight of your festive season or the perfect gift for the grown-ups to exchange. Enjoy the delights of the season and leave your guilt at home, because in January we will feature a super healthy (yet delicious) recipe that will help shed the extra pounds accumulated in December.

Zambezi Queen

There are few natural wonders as synonymous with Africa’s raw wilderness as the great Chobe River. These waters divide Namibia’s Caprivi Strip from Botswana’s Chobe National Park, and the exotic banks boast one of the densest populations of wildlife on the African continent. Teeming with life, this National Park sprawls across some 11 000 m of lush African bush, and is home to the largest populace of elephants in the world – currently estimated at roughly 120 000. It is on this great expanse of untamed water that an adventure unlike any other awaits. Why join the crowds on land-based game drives when you can experience the thrill of it all from your own private suite aboard a luxury 45 meter boat? The Zambezi Queen is all about pampering, indulgence and superior comfort. Whether you are dining on the third level restaurant watching the animals gather at the water at dusk, game viewing from one of the private boats or attempting to land your first tiger fish, the professional Zambezi Queen team will be on hand to meet your every need.

Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama Private Game Reserve is an African Eden. Sweeping across 13 000 hectares of savannah and riverine forest, Kapama represents a piece of Africa as it used to be. With the mighty Drakensberg mountains in the distance and iconic Kruger National Park to the east, Kapama has distilled the finest wildlife safari offerings for the enjoyment of guests. As part of the greater Kruger area, vast herds of buffalo, elephant and antelope are resident on Kapama, along with plentiful predators. The reserve is a slice of wilderness paradise far from the madding crowd; a place of renewal and reconnection with the natural world. The iconic and most dangerous wild animals of Africa – the Big Five – are at home on Kapama, but so too are over 40 other mammal species and 350 different types of birds. Game drives and bush walks offer fascinating encounters with wildlife, but Kapama also offers guests unique African wildlife experiences. It’s not only the wildlife encounters that are superb at Kapama – so, too, are its four diverse luxurious safari lodges. Vibrant River Lodge, breathtaking Kapama Karula, olde worlde-Africa Buffalo Camp and fantastical, nature-inspired Southern Camp welcome guests from around the globe to experience wild Africa in sumptuous style. Romantic sleep-outs on the reserve and decadent African spa treatments at the Wellness Centre are other enticing offerings that encourage complete relaxation and enjoyment of the evocative surrounding environment. Yet, even without doing anything at all, Kapama’s air of natural calm will work its magic and renew your body and mind. Kapama’s complimentary transfers are effortless for fly-in safari guests arriving on scheduled flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town. The region is serviced by Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport, a mere 10-minute drive from the entrance to the reserve, and transferring to the lodge in open vehicles means game viewing right from arrival – so your safari starts even before check-in. All you need to do is sit back, relax and be enchanted by Africa.

01Healthsunburn is a potential health hazard

S

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.

02Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

03Travel Options Air

There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.

Bus

Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.

Trains

For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.

Cars

Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
