WELCOME...

Welcome to the Winter edition of South Belfast Life! In this issue we catch up with former Lord Mayor of Belfast Máirtín Ó Muilleoir and former editor of the Press Association in Ireland Deric Henderson, to see what they love about south Belfast. South Belfast is renowned for its range of culinary delights and in this issue we review Brownes and Porterhouse as well as offering our suggestions for great places to eat and drink in the south of the city. We also take a look at the fascinating history of Botanic Gardens, such a beautiful place to visit - but what do we know about its history? Find out inside. As always, our camera has been hitting all the hottest areas south of the city to bring you a variety of social functions. If you have a function happening in the south Belfast area, why not email us at: diary@ulstertatler.com We hope you enjoy this issue! IN PROFILE:

Author and former Ireland Editor of the Press Association, Deric Henderson, tells us

“WHY I LOVE... south BELFAST” WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND? Omagh High School. I failed my eleven-plus and never looked back. I was a part time student at the former College of Business Studies in Belfast, completing the National Council for the Training of Journalists course. Belfast currently does not have a post graduate training course for journalism which, for one of the great newspaper cities, is a disgrace and a crying shame. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I spent my summer holidays working in the offices of the Tyrone Constitution in Omagh and was still at school when I got my first exclusive story – a murder in the town. The editor paid me £1, but the tip off was enough for Norman Armstrong to give me my first job as a junior reporter in August 1968, just as the first stones and bottles were being thrown on the streets of Belfast and Derry. The rest as they say, is history and I had a front row seat for 45 years witnessing the worst, and occasionally the best, of life in Northern Ireland as a journalist with the Belfast Telegraph (1973-1980) and then the Press Association. I was appointed Ireland Editor just before the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in April 1998. I travelled the world at somebody else’s expense, but it wasn’t always easy. The pressures and demands to meet deadlines were enormous, especially on major breaking stories. I retired from the PA last March to set up my own media consultancy business – Deric Henderson Media. I’ve some great clients and I’m enjoying a new life. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN SOUTH BELFAST? I’ve always lived in the south of the city. It’s strange, but nearly all my neighbours and close friends in BT9 are from the county. I couldn’t imagine anywhere else, although a few years ago Clare and I considered somewhere on the outskirts. It turned out to be a rush of blood. You meet the world and its wife on the Lisburn Road. It has some great listening posts, especially Michael McCormick’s butchers shop, Murphy’s, It is a place apart. 14 South Belfast Life

HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? Golf at Royal Portrush on most Saturdays and table tennis on autumn and winter nights at Lowe Memorial, Finaghy. I played a lot when I was at school; won the North of Ireland boys championship in 1967, but gave up when I arrived in Belfast when the troubles were at their height. But I’m detecting something of a revival of the sport. I’m also a member of the Irish Golf Writers Association which means uninhibited access at all golf tournaments, including the US Masters. I’ve been to Augusta with the press pass a couple of times and it’s the closest I’ll get to heaven. I couldn’t even begin to describe how good it is.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? There are times when you couldn’t see Belfast from far enough, but we’re spoiled rotten for some terrific eating houses, particularly in the city centre. Shu and Deane’s at Queens rarely fail to deliver and I’ve enjoyed a couple of good meals with the family in The Albany. That site never really worked for me before, but the management seemed to have hit the right formula. There are plenty of great restaurants and coffee shops in BT9 and there was a time when I would never have walked past The Chelsea. But with so many new attractions in the centre of town, the Lisburn Road really needed a place like this.

Deric enjoys playing table tennis at Lowe Memorial during the autumn and winter evenings.

Deric Henderson’s book ‘Let This Be our Secret’ published by Gill & Macmillan is a detailed account of the story of Colin Howell and Hazel Stewart, the Co. Antrim couple killed their spouses and buried the truth for 18 years by making the deaths look like a suicide pact. The book may be turned into a TV drama series - with James Nesbitt rumoured to be set to play the part of Howell.

south BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE

Former Lord Mayor of Belfast and current Belfast City Councillor for Balmoral, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir tells us...

“WHY I LOVE... south BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? Crooked. Queen’s then dole, then journalism coupled with Council, followed by management and newspaper ownership, segueing into hosting civic events and ending up back where I started on Belfast City Council. And all in the blink of an eye.

The Lyric Theatre - one of Máirtín’s favourite treasures of south Belfast.

20 South Belfast Life

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY (IF THERE IS SUCH A THING) AT WORK? Rarely productively. My scatter-gun approach and nervous disposition means I flit like a butterfly from one task to the next and then look up and say, “is it really 5pm?”. But the upside is that I talk with people across the world by email

and Skype every day, while checking up on what’s happening with my networks on Linkedin, What’s App, Twitter, Facebook and Vine. Just occasionally, I might talk to a real human being. And if not a winner in terms of beans counted, each day is a blessing and great fun. Bring on the next one.

south BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? If I have a religion, it would be running. With Van on the headphones and kingfisher over the Lagan, I am transcended. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT REPRESENTING SOUTH BELFAST? What great, giving people. Fun and courteous, action-orientated, and respectful, what’s not to like about that? And of course, the constituency has so many treasures, both built and natural, most important of which are the Lyric Theatre, Ulster Museum and Crescent Arts Centre.

Máirtín loves spending Saturday’s chewing the cud with Michael (above) at Murphy’s Butchers on the Lisburn Road.

What great, giving people. Fun and courteous, action-orientated, and respectful.

Máirtín Ó Muilleoir on the people of south Belfast.

Although not a big socialiser Máirtín enjoys the occasional pint in The Albany.

.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN SOUTH BELFAST AND WHY? I am not a big socialiser but have been seen having a pint in the King’s Head or Albany occasionally. That said, I do get to enjoy the coffee houses which double as great meeting spots: Randal’s, Espresso Elements, Arizona and many more. I try to eat, drink and sip coffee only at premises which are in local ownership as part of my buy local philosophy. Of course, the main social point in south Belfast is Murphy’s Butchers and I have been known to while a Saturday afternoon away there, nibbling from the barbecue and chewing the cud with Michael. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT / CAFE IN SOUTH BELFAST AND WHY? I am a big fan of Deane’s on the Lisburn Road. It made an immense contribution to the regeneration of the road — restaurateurs are our greatest economic drivers — and has a no-nonsense, chilledout vibe which suits me just fine. 22 South Belfast Life

Deane’s has made a massive contribution to the regeneration of the Lisburn Road according to Máirtín.

WHAT / WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN SOUTH BELFAST AND WHY? The towpath at Drumbeg bridge where the bend in the river has captivated many artists and photographers. Though I have high hopes that Council plans to transform the Stranmillis Weir by building a bridge across the Lagan span that will create ‘the’ most beautiful resting spot on the Lagan.

Diane Lemon, stylist at Peter Oliver tells us...

“WHY I LOVE... the lisburn road” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? My hairdressing career started 18 years ago when I got my first Saturday job in my local hairdressers. I loved everything about it, the atmosphere in the salon, helping the clients look their best. I then enrolled in a hairdressing course at college and completed my 3 years training, while also getting experience in a top salon in Belfast. My very good friend Emma has ran the shop with Peter for the past seven years, but from January 2015 Emma will be concentrating on being a mum, so I will be taking over the running of the business. I’m looking forward to continuing to offer the best possible service and growing the business. We’re fortunate that we have two of Belfast’s top stylists with us, Gayle Abusow and Aaron Raven HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? A typical day for me is catching up with messages, emails etc on my journey to work. Once in work I check appointments, get our own espresso machine on for our clients. We get such a variety of clients, I always look forward to chatting to them all while making them look their best with a great haircut. We have a great team here at Peter Oliver’s and I enjoy every day here, it’s not like work.

they do the most amazing chocolates, my favourite being the salted caramel, and they are presented in a beautiful gift box - so they make a great gift idea. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE ON THE LISBURN ROAD? WHY? My favourite cafe on the Lisburn road has to be the Yellow Door, they have fresh bread and pastries every morning, amazing sandwiches and salads, great friendly staff, great fresh food. I also love Porterhouse, if you are after an amazing steak this is the place to go, and for the sweet tooth I love the Cookie Box for their milkshakes! WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE ON THE LISBURN ROAD? WHY? There is such a great choice. I love catching up with friends over food, so Rocket and Relish is great for burgers, Chalco’s serves very authentic Mexican, and they do great burritos. The Albany is also a great addition to the road.

Rocket and Relish is one of Diane’s favourite places to catch up with friends.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE LISBURN ROAD? I love that it has everything you need is on one road, great clothes shops, my favourite being Déjà Vu, I would get a lot of my clothes there, Ruth is great at putting different outfits together. The Lash Lounge is a wee gem, a great way to treat yourself for a night out. I actually get my own hair done at Andrew Watson’s, a lovely salon and Andrew is a great stylist. It’s also great having Marks & Spencer, as I can pop in after work to pick up dinner etc. There is something for everyone on the Lisburn Road. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM ON THE LISBURN ROAD? WHY? With so many cool shops and boutiques it’s hard to pick one but I would have to say my favourite is The Chocolate Room, 32 South Belfast Life

Diane loves the steaks at The Porterhouse.

Ballyhackamore’s proximity to Stormont is great for Glyn’s day to day work.

Seamus McFlynn, Estate Agent at Property One, tells us...

“WHY I LOVE... south BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I gained a BSc in Property Investment and Development, during which I completed a placement year with Property One. I spent almost three years in Sydney working for Australia’s largest estate agency. I was offered a chance to return home thanks to the expansion of Property One into the new Lisburn Road offices, and I was really excited to take up what I’m sure will be a great opportunity. I have brought with me some of the innovative techniques I learned from my time in Australia, which have transferred really well to the local property market. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? I spend a lot of my time on the telephone. Estate agency is all about communication, so I set aside some time every day to keep in touch with our vendors, give them detailed feedback from any recent viewings and keep them up to date with the progress of their sale. I also, obviously, spend a lot of time

preparing for and carrying out valuations. It is important for property owners to have an accurate valuation of their property so they can plan financially for the future. I really enjoy this aspect of my job as it involves getting out and meeting new people. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AND LIVING IN SOUTH BELFAST? I’ve really enjoyed south Belfast since moving back from Australia. Sydney is one of the world’s great cities, but I can honestly say that I enjoy living in south Belfast just as much, if not more. I’ve noticed a real buzz and vibrancy around the Lisburn Road since returning home. It’s great that Property One’s office is right in the heart of that; it’s a great place to work with all the surrounding cafes and restaurants and, of course, all the fantastic residential property in the south Belfast area.

Slim’s Healthy Kitchen is close to Seamus’ work place, and he and his colleagues often pop in for an after work meal.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? Cutters Wharf in Stranmillis is a great place to go for a drink and is very close to where I live. Shu on the Lisburn Road does great food, and Deane and Decano is a great spot if I’m taking a client out for lunch. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? 5a Lockview Road is a great little cafe in Stranmillis that probably isn’t that well known outside the immediate area. The coffee is fantastic and it’s a great place to go and have breakfast on a Sunday morning, sitting outside if the weather is good enough.

Down by the river - The picturesque Cutters Wharf is close to Seamus’ home and is one of his favourite places to go for a drink. 38 South Belfast Life

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? We are fortunate that our office is situated right next door to Slim’s Healthy Kitchen on the Lisburn Road. The food in there is excellent. It’s great for lunches, its healthy smoothies are really good and the staff at Property One would occasionally go in there for dinner together after work on a Friday.

Creating Beauty, Restoring Smiles 03 Dental has been proactive in enhancing the provision of advanced dental services in Northern Ireland for the last 12 years, since the opening of the first practice in 2002. Botanic Gardens The Botanic Gardens were established on their present site, a derelict nursery at the top of University Road, in 1829, by the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society, a private company. The intention of the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society was two-fold: to encourage an interest in horticulture (for example, in 1851 a giant South American water lily flowered there for the first time in Ireland) and to train young men as gardeners. Funds were raised by charging for admission, 6d in 1861 according to McComb’s Guide to Belfast. That same

year, an annual subscription for a family cost one guinea. The charges probably meant that the Gardens were usually beyond the means of the poor, though the cost of admission was reduced on Easter Monday, when all classes met there in such numbers from the 1870s onwards as to require police and military to control the crowds. ‘Pre-eminent in Elucidating the Laws of Nature and in Applying Them To The Service of Man’! A Statue in Botanic Gardens of the great Victorian scientist William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs, born in Belfast 1824, died 1907.

Two attractions on offer to the Victorian visitor can still be enjoyed; the Palm House (1839- 40 and 1852), and the Tropical Grove (built in 1886 but doubled in size in 1900). The Gardens were purchased from the Company by Belfast Corporation in 1895 and were subsequently opened as a public park. Throughout the Victorian era, the Royal Botanic Gardens (as they were known until 1895) were often filled with crowds for a wide range of attractions, among which balloon ascents and fireworks displays were always popular. The programme of a fête champetre in 1840 listed music for dancing, an exhibition of photographs by Belfast’s first photographer, FS. Beatty, a balloon ascent, underwater explosions set off by electricity, a conjuror, jousting on ponies for boys, and a poetry writing competition (winning poems were then published in the Press). In the evening, many took to boats on the river, bringing along musical instruments; unfortunately the boat races were marred by the unsporting behaviour and language of some of the oarsmen. In 1881 an Exhibition Hall was erected behind the Palm House, with seating for about 1,000 people, where balls, concerts and other entertainments took place during the winter months. The Hall was used as a military hospital during the First World War. The Gardens also provided a venue for more serious events. On 17 September 1862, a Grand Protestant demonstration expressed displeasure with what was seen as the government’s lack of impartiality in its application of the Party Processions Act, by allowing a Nationalist parade with bands and banners to take place in Dublin (and on the Sabbath!), while denying Northern Protestants freedom to celebrate the ‘anniversaries of days of memories dear unto them as to their forefathers’. Was Dr Henry Cooke exaggerating when he reckoned the event attracted some 70-80,000 people? In 1892 a monster AntiHome Rule Convention claimed to have brought 300,000 to the various events connected with it, some of which took place in the Gardens.

Craigavon House 1917. 42 South Belfast Life

As well as political occasions, there were religious events: mass meetings in the course of the 1859 revival; a rally in 1869 declaring opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland; a service of thanksgiving for victory in the Second World War in 1945. On a happier note, Sir Daniel Dixon hosted a garden party for over 2,000 people to celebrate the consecration of the nave of Belfast Cathedral in June 1904. In recent times the military bands, so popular in the Victorian era, have been replaced by pop groups for outdoor gigs that attract thousands.

SOUTH BELFAST : history The historic Palm House, Botanic Gardens.

In 1913 a site was found in the Botanic Gardens for a new museum. The construction, however, as led by the designs of J.C Wynne of Edinburgh, did not begin until 1924. Only a section of Wynne’s museum was built. In the 1960s a competition to complete the project was won by Francis Pym of London, with a design typical of its time and about as unlike Wynne’s as it was possible to get. A link between the old building and the new was made by extending the rustication on Wynne’s building on to Pym’s. Both stages of building produced hostile reactions.

‘Old Fogey’, writing in the Northern Whig in 1929, the year the museum was opened, was in no doubt that the choice of location was mistaken: “There was absolutely no excuse for obtruding a massive pile upon the leafy sanctity of that little oasis - the grateful retreat for the Druids of the city from the wilderness of bricks and mortar, which has formed and is still extending around it. No more inconvenient site for the Museum assuming that it was intended to serve the masses - could have been selected.”

Raising the ‘Steaks’ SOUTH BELFAST LIFE’S PHILIP MCLAUGHLIN VISITS PORTERHOUSE RESTAURANT, THE HOME OF HIGH QUALITY STEAK DINING Located on the Lisburn Road, Porterhouse is renowned for its passion for food, and with claims to its name such as “Best steak in the Province” (Sainsbury’s Magazine) I couldn’t wait to try out this highly acclaimed restaurant for myself. On a wet and miserable winter’s evening, my partner and I took comfort in the welcoming atmosphere of Porterhouse. The attentive manageress immediately escorted us to our table and presented us with the menu. We took a few minutes to warm ourselves through and survey our surroundings over a bottle of beer and glass of wine. It was great to see that on a miserable Sunday night, this place was full of life. Diners no doubt are attracted by the great offer at Porterhouse- a steak dinner for two with wine from Sunday to Thursday for only £35. This definitely impressed us and ensured we were looking forward to our meal even more. The menu offers a vast selection of dishes, and certainly isn’t just about steaks. Starters range from chef’s soup of the day served with homemade bread, to main courses such as Irish chicken supreme with French beans, panchetta, Madeira cream and dauphinios potatoes. The steak menu certainly didn’t disappoint either and steak lovers are sure to be in dining heaven, with 46 South Belfast Life

no less than eight options available including rump, sirloin and rib eye.

the perfect way to finish our fabulous dining experience at Porterhouse.

Taking a while to survey the menu, I finally decided on the beef bites with BBQ sauce to begin with. This was the perfect way to begin the meal; the beef was deliciously tender and the sauce the perfect accompaniment. My parter also thoroughly enjoyed her selection of salt and chilli tempera king prawn on Asian slaw with lemon and lime mayonnaise.

The welcoming atmosphere, knowledgeable and attentive staff, intimate surroundings and superb food at Porterhouse all combine to offer a truly fantastic dining experience, which will leave you vowing to return again soon.

For the main course we decided it would be rude not to order steak. I opted for the 12oz sirloin, served with chunky chips and Porterhouse sause. I was pleased to find that my steak certainly lived up to its great claims. Excellently presented, it was cooked to perfection (well done being my preference) and tasted divine. Opposite me, my partner had no problem with her Ribeye on the bone, again accompanied with homemade triple cooked chips, and peppercorn sauce. The reason these steaks were so good? Porterhouse uses only the highest grade beef, resulting in a tender, succulent steak with a concentrated, rich flavour. Never one to pass up on dessert, we finished our meal off by going for the trio of Porterhouse sweets; chocolate brownie, strawberry granita and cheesecake. This was

Love Food / Hate Waste South Belfast consumers are being urged to #DoOneThingDifferently with Love Food Hate Waste and change their shopping and eating habits as food waste comes under the spotlight during European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) which runs from 22 – 30 November. In the UK households throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink a year most of which could have been eaten. This is costing £12.5billion each year or £200 per person in the UK buying and then throwing away good food. If this good food and drink wasn’t ending up in the bin it would have the same positive environmental impact as taking 1 in 4 cars off our roads. Speaking at a cookery demonstration to launch EWWR, Danielle McCormick a spokesperson for Love Food 48 South Belfast Life

Hate Waste in NI said: “There are two main reasons why we throw away good food, either we cook or prepare too much or we don’t use it in time. “Over the course of the week we are calling on everyone to commit to doing one thing differently which could include planning meals in advance instead of making it up on the day or paying more attention to date labels rather than letting food go past its use-by date and ending up in the bin. Sharing ideas through twitter @LFHW_UK using #DoOneThingDifferently will also help show how everyone’s now doing their bit to reduce food waste.” For more information on European Week for Waste Reduction or for a wide range of tips, information and a whole host of delicious recipes log onto www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

SOUTH BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE

Darren Ferguson, Managing Director at Beyond Skin, tells us

“WHY I LOVE... south BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I’m a musician, piano being my instrument of choice, and have been involved in various music productions. My interest in community and international development work started with a trip to Romania through Volunteer Services Belfast in 1992. I also spent three years as a fundraiser/ campaigner for Concern Worldwide. It was in January 2004 when various elements came together that led me to setting up Beyond Skin. Belfast was named by some media outlets as the race hate capital of Europe. This left me feeling frustrated. It was then that I came across an international music and media production organisation called ‘1 Giant Leap’ which had a massive impact on me and was my inspiration for Beyond Skin. Taking its name from a Nitin Sawhney album title and quote, over the last 10 years, Beyond Skin has worked directly with over 55,000 people, running on average 172 workshops/events a year, providing paid employment to approximately 220 people representing over 50 nationalities and developing links and projects with 27 countries.

answering a large amount of emails and administration duties would be meeting with current partners, potential investors and spending as much time as possible in the company of creative positive people. It could be visiting one of our projects or just a brain-storming session over a coffee. I like to start my day early in the office for around 8am and I can be still found ‘tottering’ about on my laptop at home til late most evenings.

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? I love my work and the lines between ‘the job’ and my personal life are very blurred. So a typical day between

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AND LIVING IN SOUTH BELFAST? We live next to a park and I love that open space. I frequently take walks down the

Darren loves relaxing in Musgrave Park with his family.

Spoilt for choice: The Lisburn Road is packed with great Indian restaurants, and Bengal Brasserie (above) is one of Darren’s favourites. Lisburn Road and it gives me great joy in seeing and hearing the diversity on the street. There is something very magical and exciting about that which centres me and shows endless life opportunities and possibilities as a global citizen. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? I enjoy coffee culture, but a place has to have more than great coffee. Well mannered staff and good non-pop music on the stereo is a must! Most of the time it is a café on the Lisburn Road. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? I love Indian food, so we are spoilt for choice on the Lisburn Road between the Jharna, The Raj and Bengal Brasserie. I always seem to end up in Café Mauds for my caffeine fix. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? Musgrave Park – we live close to the park and it is never really busy – not sure why that is, as it is a great space to relax and gather your thoughts. In a city it is so important that spaces like Musgrave Park are maintained and accessible – we need these spaces to remind us as a human race that there is room for relaxation between our very busy lives. That’s the musician in me. Music would just be a noise if it were not for the space between the notes. South Belfast Life 53

REVIEW

wheaten bread, was the perfect way to whet my appetite for the main course. My partner could not fault her starter of prawns - fresh and tasty was the description from the other end of the table.

Great service, Great food SOUTH BELFAST LIFE’S PHILIP MCLAUGHLIN VISITS BROWNES BAR AND GRILL, IN THE HEART OF SOUTH BELFAST With the country suffering some of the worst rain on record this winter, I was delighted to be given the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy a lovely meal at Brownes Bar and Grill. Brownes is situated on Boucher Road, in the heart of one of the busiest commercial areas of south Belfast. The building’s exterior is reminiscent of a traditional pub, but with a modern edge. When my partner and I turned up on this wet November evening, we felt like we’d found the perfect spot to enjoy a wonderful meal away from the horrendous weater. We weren’t the only people to think so the place was brimming with life, families, couples, groups of friends and especially local workers were all enjoying the wonderful modern surroundings. Despite the crowds we were quickly attended to by the friendly waiter and indeed throughout our stay the entire staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. We also took the fact that the bar and kitchen were so busy as a good sign - it meant that the food was obviously in demand. While we were sat at the table we took time to admire the stylish decor, including

a fantastic retro Jukebox, which helps give Brownes a warm and quirkey feeling. Perusing the menu, it wasn’t hard to see why Brownes is so popular. The starter menu was full of many tempting choices including, baked goats cheese, Dundrum Bay mussels and many more delicious sounding treats. After much debate I opted for the mussels, and my partner decided on the Terracotta garlic prawns. The main course selection was even more impressive, with 8oz sirloin steak with chips and pepper sauce, rump of lamb and pink carved Greshingham duck just a brief selection of the many fabulous dishes on offer.

My main course, the pan roasted chicken breast was beautiful and plentiful. The quality of mash and meat was exactly what you would expect from a bar/restaurant that prides itself as one of the finest pub food outlets in the country. The meat was rich, thick, tasty and perfectly complemented by the mash and paprika cream. My partner was equally happy with her main course, in fact I think it exceeded her expectations. She found the salmon cooked to perfection, tasty and juicy - and perfectly topped off by the noodles and pak choi oyster sauce. Both the starters and main courses came in very healthy sized portions and we were both more than satisfied with our experience, and indeed were happy to stay at the bar a bit longer and enjoy a drink before departing to do a bit of shopping - Brownes is perfectly located for a spot of pre or post meal retail therapy. Brownes is an excellent place to visit for a great value meal and we found it difficult to fault anything from our visit. Despite the fact that the restaurant was busy the service was fast and the staff pleasant and most importantly of all, the food was delicious and the portions were incredibly generous Brownes is one restaurant that we will be returning to again and again.

I decided to go with the pan roasted chicken breast with bacon and parmesan mash, roast vegetables and paprika cream. My partner opted for the Asian style salmon with soy and sesame noodles. Even though the restaurant was busy and bristling with life we did not have to wait long for our starters to arrive. My Dundrum Bay mussels were just fantastic. A huge portion of deliciously fresh mussels served in a white wine cream sauce, with

IN FOCUS

HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR NEW PUPPY Getting a new puppy for yourself or your family is an exciting time. There is lots of fun and joy to be got from your new pet. Once you arrive to see your vet for a health check or vaccination you have already made a lot of crucial decisions like the breed or sex of dog that would be suitable for your life. From this point on we want to help you develop your pup into a well balanced dog. I want to give you some pre-purchase and post-purchase advise. Pre-purchase advice Do not meet the breeder at the side of a road and do not allow them to deliver the puppy to your home. This is the first clue that you may be buying from a puppy farm as they do not want to expose their breeding premises. Ask to visit the breeder’s home. Check out the pup’s environment. Watch the puppy’s reaction to the breeder - is it friendly or cautious? A well adjusted puppy is one that has been handled gently and frequently by the breeder. This means they have been well socialised and will react well to humans in the future. It is better if the puppy has been reared in-doors in close contact with children and adults. Always see the mother of the puppy. Pet her and play with her to see what her character is like. Is she very timid, nervous or aggressive? The puppy may inherit her characteristics. Look at all the litter mates. It is best not to go for the most precocious dog in the litter and the same goes for the most quiet/runt of the litter. Pick a puppy from somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. You will get a more balanced dog. If the puppy is for a child, it is best not to bring the child on the first visit, as attachments can be made very quickly. Do a preliminary visit so you can assess if this pup is right for you. Always be prepared to walk away if you are not happy when you see the puppy. Highlight any concerns you have with the puppy’s appearance, weight and coat or environment.

Local Veterinary Surgeon Dan Flynn from Flynnvets at Balmoral and Commons Brae is back to answer your questions about problem pet issues. If you have a question you’d like the vet to write about, email it to: askdanthevet@gmail.com.

vaccinated? If so, ask to see a proof of this with a vaccination certificate. Pre-purchase advice Once you have chosen your pup and brought him/her home, make arrangements to get a veterinary health check and review the vaccinations required. When I see a puppy for the first time I give it a full health check, worming and defleaing along with the vaccinations required. I assess weight, coat, eyes, mouth, ears, heart and lungs. Checks for parasites like fleas, lice, worms and ear mites are also carried out as well as checks for congenital defects like hernias or heart murmurs. I will discuss the breed and any problems that we might see with that particular breed. I ensure males have both testicles descended. Puppies should be playing, eating and sleeping, passing motions with no discomfort and no diarrhoea or dirty tail. They will not have control over their toileting habits at this stage. I also discuss feeding and sleeping arrangement. I do not advise bringing pups into the bedroom as once this is done it can be difficult to get them out, without distress. Once your pup is home, we are looking to develop two areas - socialisation and habituation.

Socialisation can be described as the process whereby animals learn to recognize and interact with species with which it cohabits (man and cats for example). Habituation can be described as the process whereby an animal becomes accustomed to non-threatening environmental stimuli and learn to ignore them. For example, other dogs, visitors, cars, loud noises and generally the unexpected. There is a critical and sensitive period of development in which socialization and habituation must occur and be properly managed if the dog is not to grow up to be maladjusted. This starts with where the puppies are reared and what interaction they get with humans and also when they get to their home and how the interacting and exposure the continues. A good example is dog grooming. For breeds that need regular grooming, it is advisable that they get introduced to this early from about 14 weeks and that it is an enjoyable experience so there should be no fear in the future of clippers, dryers or the bath tube. Check out our Facebook page: facebook. com/Flynnvets for further information on puppy classes run by Megan, one of our Veterinary nurses over the next few weeks.

Cleared for Take Off George Best Belfast City Airport has welcomed an announcement by leading European airline Vueling that it is to commence a twice weekly service to Barcelona in May 2015. The low cost yet full service airline has ambitious plans for growth with Belfast City Airport being one of a number of new routes from its Barcelona El Prat base announced in November. Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of Belfast City Airport, said: “It remains our aim to attract new airlines to Northern Ireland and facilitate more direct European routes. We are therefore delighted that Vueling has chosen to include Belfast City Airport as one of a select few in its plans to expand its network. “The hugely popular European airline has an extensive network with over 100 destinations across Europe including Paris, Brussels, Rome, Madrid and has a growing presence in Russia, North Africa and Scandinavia. “This is a very exciting opportunity to work with Vueling whose strategy is to partner with airports that have high levels of customer service and are aimed at business travellers.”

SOUTH BELFAST : SPORTING SPOTLIGHT

A DREAM COME TRUE BOYHOOD LINFIELD FAN WARREN FEENEY WAS RECENTLY ANNOUNCED AS MANAGER OF THE SOUTH BELFAST SIDE. WE TAKE A LOOK AT HIS CAREER AND THE CHALLENGES THAT LIE AHEAD AT WINDSOR PARK

Although raised in east Belfast, Warren Feeney’s heart belonged to the south of the city. It was here that his beloved Linfield took to the pitch at Windsor Park every other Saturday, and a

young Feeney would come along to watch his heroes play the beautiful game. More than 25 years have passed since Feeney stood on the terraces cheering on his boyhood team,

and upon returning to Windsor Park to take up the reins as Linfield manager, the changes in the old ground have been remarkable (and there are more to come), but one thing has remained constant - Warren Feeney’s love of Linfield. It was almost inevitable that Feeney would end up at Windsor Park. His career took him across the spectrum of UK football, including spells at Leeds United, Bournemouth, Stockport County, Luton Town, Cardiff City, Swansea City, Dundee United, Sheffield Wednesday, Oldham Athletic, Plymouth Argyle and Salisbury City (as assistant player manager), and of course he represented Northern Ireland on 46 occasions, scoring 5 times. His domestic footballing journey across the UK was only missing one destination - Northern Ireland, and there was only place he wanted to end up - Linfield. Feeney was announced as Linfield manager on 26th April this year, and he has big shoes to fill. David Jeffrey managed Linfield for 17 years, before stepping down at the end of last season. In his time in charge of ‘the Blues’, Jeffrey won an incredible 31 trophies and is considered as footballing royalty around Windsor Park. It is a massive challenge for the 33-year-old, who is embarking on his first managerial role, but Feeney is aware of the demands and is more than up for the challenge:

True Blue: Warren Feeney is the new manager of Linfield.

Living the dream: After registering as a player, Warren Feeney celebrates his side’s victory over arch rivals Glentoran.

66 South Belfast Life

“The biggest misconception about me is that I am easy-going,” he told an assembled media at his introductory press conference. “I have learned under some great managers. One of them said to me that if you give a

SOUTH BELFAST : SPORTING SPOTLIGHT player an inch, they will take a mile. I have never forgotten that. Feeney played 46 games for Northern Ireland, scoring 5 goals.

I wouldn’t come into this job if I didn’t know how to handle it and go about it.” As manager of Linfield he is living his dream, and he is not prepared to let it slip away: “I can see myself being here for years – I want to bring success to Linfield. It is what you want to do and how you want to do it – that’s what I believe in. I want to be here forever. I am prepared for everything in life. This determination has been ever present through Feeney’s career - he left Belfast at a young age to forge a career in England, and he believes it is that sort of determination and belief that will help him succeed in the Linfield hot seat: “I went across the water at 16, and I was inexperienced playing against full-timers. People will say the same me managing Linfield. “But I am well prepared and have done my research – I feel I am ready for this job. I put myself in for it, and I am 100 per cent focused.” One issue was left hanging as Feeney spoke to the media, would he continue his playing career in a blue shirt? He was coy about the issue, saying he kept himself fit, just in case. Beofre the start of the season Feeney registered himself as a Linfield player, he would live his dream on the pitch and in the dugout, few would bet agaisnt him being successful at both during his time at Linfield.
