IMPACT REPORT 2022

After nearly a year as interim dean of this fine institution, I have learned a great deal. I have learned that developing tomorrow’s leaders in oral health care, while also addressing issues of oral health equity and access, is no easy task. I have learned that the school accomplishes quite a lot with the resources we have. But perhaps the greatest lesson is how much every single person in our school community contributes to our success. That includes you, our alumni and friends.
Fortunately, I often get the chance to tell our students, staff, and faculty how they help the School of Dentistry advance its mission. What a privilege it is to speak directly to you in this Impact Report.
In the past year, we have done so much at the school to ensure that students leave the School of Dentistry prepared to be competent, confident dentists, dental specialists, and dental hygienists. However, we don’t do that alone.
Quite simply, without you there would be no we. Every student we educate, every patient we treat, every research study that is published by our faculty and students is because you, our generous champions, have enabled us to do so.
In this report, we share how you have made an impact on so many lives with your support. From me and all of us here at the School of Dentistry, THANK YOU!
Go Cards!

Contributions to scholarship and student support funds make the dream of a dental career possible for the next generation of oral health care leaders, including those from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic populations in dentistry.
Although the UofL School of Dentistry does everything possible to keep tuition costs low, there is no escaping the fact that a dental education is expensive. According to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), average educational debt for all indebted dental school graduates in the Class of 2021 was $301,583, with the average for public and private schools at $261,226 and $354,901 respectively.
Approximately 85 percent of all dental students receive some form of financial aid. However, the majority of financial aid comes in the form of student loans. The ability to offer scholarships helps our school lower or eliminate the burden of these loans, setting up our students for success after graduation.
In addition to accepting scholarships from outside sources, UofL School of Dentistry offers two types of scholarships: academic merit scholarships and endowed scholarships. Endowed scholarships are effective tools that enable us to attract and retain diverse and highly qualified students from Kentucky and beyond. These scholarships are granted based on a variety of qualifications such as financial need and state of residence.
With your donation to an endowed scholarship, you are not just investing in a single student. You are investing in the future of the School of Dentistry. Endowed funds are intended to be held in perpetuity (forever), with the investment earned from those funds made available to spend in support of the purpose of the endowment.

“I have wanted to be a dentist since the second grade. This scholarship was needed a lot. Thank you for helping with my education.”
Through the generosity of donors, ULSD has established the Dr. Brian Alpert OMFS Award, which will be given annually at graduation to a senior dental student who demonstrated excellence in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The inaugural award was presented in May 2022.
The award honors the memory and legacy of Dr. Brian Alpert, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and faculty at the University for 48 years who passed away August 2021. Dr. Alpert trained countless dental students, residents, and dental professionals during his career, and he is responsible for establishing the OMFS residency program as we know it today.
The Wood E. Currens Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014, when alumni and friends honored Dr. Currens prior to his retirement. At that time, donors collected more than $100,000 to establish the scholarship, which is presented to one DMD student and one dental hygiene student each year.
Now known as the Currens & Mattingly Endowed Scholarship, the fund continues to grow thanks to regular contributions from friends, family, and former students of Dr. Currens and Dr. Mattingly. When Dr. Currens passed away in April 2022, many people took the opportunity to honor their friend and mentor with a donation — further cementing the fund that continues his legacy.
David Clark Currier Jr., receives the 2022 Dr. Brian Alpert Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Award from department chair Dr. George Kushner.A theme throughout the inspiring military and dental career of Robert McGuinn, DMD ’74, is his great enjoyment for helping others. Whether through annual visits to U.N. refugee camps in Hong Kong, Army Reserves service in Pakistan and Egypt, or work in the U.S. with Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corps, Dr. McGuinn’s most memorable life experiences have been in service to others.
Beyond volunteering, he and wife, Penny, have given to the UofL School of Dentistry for many years, including an endowed scholarship, an annual award for teaching excellence, a fund to support expenses for the Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta, and several building renovations. Their most recent project, The Wood E. Currens Student Success and Wellness Center, is dedicated to the late alumnus, faculty member, lifelong mentor, and friend, whom Dr. McGuinn met early in his UofL studies.
After undergraduate studies, Dr. McGuinn enrolled in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving one year in Vietnam. Although originally contemplating veterinary school, a former professor encouraged his application to dental school. He enrolled in the UofL School of Dentistry in 1970, then served two years in the Navy Dental Corps before finally enlisting in the Army Reserves. Alongside military service, he was able to establish a dental practice in North Atlanta, working both until 2005.
Now retired, and enjoying a slower pace of life, Dr. McGuinn hopes others will join in his passion for helping UofL students and faculty succeed.
The McGuinns are very proud of their two daughters, Dr. Shaun McGuinn Samples (Mercer University, MD
Like many legacy donors, the McGuinns have chosen to enhance their endowed scholarship through a declaration in their will. Current scholarship recipient, Kayla Cotton (class of 2023), who

These contributions also allow us to invest in programs and equipment that help engage our students in the process of discovery.
Contributions to the Compassionate Care Fund support patients who need advanced treatments but can’t afford them, while also allowing our students to complete advanced procedures required for graduation and certification.
The Compassionate Care Fund is designed to support patients who need advanced treatments but can’t afford them. It also allows our students to perform procedures that are expensive and allows them to get those experiences that they might not otherwise be able to perform.
Financial barriers can limit access to care for many people in the communities we serve. Often, employed or retired individuals are ineligible for assistance in paying for dental treatment. Compassionate Care funds are distributed to adult and pediatric patients at DMD clinics, graduate clinics, and off-site clinics based on need.
The School of Dentistry’s interim dean, Dr. Margaret Hill, says donating to the Compassionate Care fund is one of the most effective ways that donors can make an impact because every dollar serves two purposes. “This fund serves as a matchmaker of sorts, helping to bring together patients who have a need and students who have a need,” she says.
Dr. Hill adds that many of the patients who receive care at the School of Dentistry and the school’s offsite clinics don’t have any other alternatives. “Access to care is so critical right now in many populations here in Louisville, in our surrounding counties, and across the Commonwealth,” she says.
Meanwhile, students have the need to complete essential clinical experiences as part of their education, so Compassionate Care funds provide direct student support that allows them to be able to progress toward graduation.
The ULSD Compassionate Care program was established about eight years ago through an endowment from the RSMIS Foundation. Since then, thanks to continued support from the foundation and many other donors, more than $130,000 of dental care services have been provided to patients using Compassionate Care funds. In the first 9 months of 2022 alone, more than 80 students were able to provide services with assistance from these funds.

After a challenging year in 2020-2021 — when many school- and community-based events were canceled due to COVID-19 — outreach and service activities have rebounded during the past year. Students, residents, and faculty have been engaged in externships, rotations, and service activities in 22 Kentucky counties, as well as nine other states.
Service is not just an add-on to the educational experience at ULSD; it is built into the curriculum, with an emphasis on underserved populations. In order to reach even more underserved communities and populations, we have opened ULSD-operated clinical sites in Louisville, Paducah, and Shelbyville. In addition, we maintain rotation sites statewide and have outreach agreements with organizations such as JCPS, RAM, and Delta Dental of Kentucky Foundation.
Thanks to support from our generous donors and partners, ULSD is covering the Commonwealth with our community of care.

Photos:As the oldest dental school west of the Allegheny Mountains, the University of Louisville School of Dentistry benefits from a long legacy of training experts in oral care. Private donations have renovated our facility, kept our equipment up-to-date and provided funds to enhance the student and resident experience.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ULSD’s Orthodontic Residency Program. Nearly 300 men and women have completed their orthodontic training at ULSD.
Support from alumni has played a significant role in the continued success of the program. The latest evidence of that support is the “Brace for Change” campaign. Thanks to donors to this campaign, renovations of the orthodontics clinic on the third floor of the school began in the summer of 2022. The first phase involved installation of 21 new chairs. Nearly all of the chairs have been named in honor of a donor — or, in some cases, a mentor, faculty member, or loved one the donor selected.
In addition to funding clinic renovations, the campaign supports three other priorities within the Orthodontic program: student financial aid, resident experiential learning (travel funds), and excellence funds for miscellaneous programmatic needs.
Dr. Toru Deguchi, chair of the ULSD department of Rehabilitative and Reconstructive Dentistry, says donors’ investments “will pay off in our ability to graduate our future colleagues with the training and education they will need to provide the best care to patients that they possibly can.” He adds, “I look forward to working more closely with such a dedicated group of Alumni, who have proven their willingness to help our residents succeed.”

Contributions to Endowed Chair funds and the School of Dentistry Fund help ULSD continue to attract and retain faculty who contribute significantly to the school’s reputation of excellence.
At ULSD and other dental schools, endowed chairs are a key method of attracting and retaining the highestquality faculty. An endowed chair is an honor to the named holder of the appointment and also an enduring tribute to the donor who establishes it.
As state support for the university continues to decline, these funds have become even more important. Dr. George Kushner, who is the Edwards Endowed Chair in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, says donor support is needed now more than ever for many reasons: “Healthcare is facing incredibly difficult challenges currently: recovering from a worldwide pandemic, supply chain shortages of equipment and medications, shortage of healthcare personnel, retirement, and the ‘graying’ of our senior surgeon faculty.”
Currently, ULSD has four endowed chair funds that are made possible by our donors:
DR. JAMES B. AND ANN D. EDWARDS CHAIR IN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
Current Endowed Chair: Dr. George Kushner - Professor and Chair, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Current Endowed Chair: Dr. Toru Deguchi - Professor and Chair, Rehabilitative and Reconstructive Dentistry
Current Endowed Chair: Dr. Richard Lamont - Professor and Chair, Oral Immunology and Infectious Disease
Current Endowed Chair: Requires additional funding to reach the level needed to support faculty salary
On October 20, 2021, Delta Dental of Kentucky Foundation announced a multi-year gift pledge of $1,070,000 to the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. These funds will have a lasting impact through happy, healthy smiles across Kentucky.
Additionally, Delta Dental’s multi-year gift will support UofL’s services schedule with the Home of the Innocents practice, Kosair Charities Center clinic, Brown Cancer Center dental oncology practice, Shelbyville practice, and Paducah practice.
During the same announcement, UofL School of Dentistry increased its commitment to faculty and student involvement in the Delta Dental Mobile Dental Unit. This mobile unit provides services on wheels to underserved communities throughout the state. In August 2022, ULSD and Delta Dental collaborated to send the mobile dental clinic to eastern Kentucky after devastating floods damaged the Mountain Comprehensive Care Clinic in Whitesburg.
“The multi-year partnership with Delta Dental will touch the lives of so many Kentuckians who otherwise might not have access to affordable, high-quality dental care,” said Dr. Margaret Hill, interim dean of the School of Dentistry. “From Paducah to Shelbyville to Louisville and in between, we are committed to doing the most we can to train, educate and serve both our students and our communities about the importance of oral health. Delta Dental’s support allows us to do just that.”
The gift expands support for patient care funds and clinic operations throughout the Commonwealth. The Foundation’s contribution provides funding to support both capital projects and patient care programs. To date, the Foundation has provided more than $400,000 dollars to support initiatives of this kind.
In addition to support of the UofL School of Dentistry, the Delta Dental of Kentucky Foundation provides grants and funding to hundreds of other Kentuckybased 501c3 non-profit organizations. Since 2015, more than $20 million has been donated to promote oral health and quality of life for citizens across the Commonwealth.
