(MCT) — Pope Francis swept into America on Wednesday, captivating the nation’s capital as he launched his first visit, embracing the country’s heritage while challenging it to do more to solve global problems.

“God Bless America,” he said to enthusiastic applause at the White House at the start of a whirlwind day.

Thousands cheered the popular leader of the Roman Catholic Church as he made his way around the nation’s capital, first at an elaborate welcome on the South Lawn of the White House, then on a brief parade in the “popemobile” near the National Mall, and finally at an outdoor Mass for 25,000 canonizing the country’s first Hispanic saint. Throughout, he waded into some of the most contentious issues in American politics and the church, on subjects such as immigration and the sex abuse scandals that plagued U.S. Catholicism.

(MCT) — Solar farms sprout across South Georgia like mushrooms after a storm. Biomass factories down east produce wood pellets to meet Europe’s renewable energy needs.

Natural gas pipelines crisscross the state delivering cleaner energy to homes and factories.

Georgia is finally embracing the renewable energy revolution that promises to protect the climate and reduce dependence on foreignsourced oil.

Who could possibly oppose a brighter, cleaner future? Turtles, that’s who. Or, more specifically, gopher tortoises, a potentially endangered species that serves as the state’s official reptile and makes its home in South Georgia fields where solar panels will soon cover thousands of turtle-friendly acres with translucent panels catching the sun’s rays.

(MCT) — A group of Syrian rebels is working with embassies in Turkey to help foreign fighters defect from the Islamic State and return home.

Analysts say the effort has yet to stem the flow of foreign fighters joining the group and defections have yet to become widespread.

Thousands of foreign fighters - including huge numbers from Western European countries - have flocked to join the Islamic State and other Islamist groups among the Syrian rebels over the past three years.

In an interview, Abu Shujar, a commander and spokesman for the Raqqa Revolutionaries, a moderate rebel group that was driven out of the Syrian city of Raqqa by the Islamic State, said his group has helped about 300 foreign fighters escape the Islamic State. “If they can get in contact with us, then we help them go out,” said Abu Shujar.

(MCT) — The Presidential Office Building in Taipei isn’t easily mistaken for other buildings.

It’s an ornate Baroque-style structure that dates back to 1919 and is capped by a 200-foot-tall tower.

In July, China held a military exercise that included an assault on a building that - based on video from the mainland - closely resembled the presidential offices in Taipei.

Overnight, the anxiety thermostat in Taiwan spiked.

Many saw it as evidence that a real military invasion of their island could be in the works.

Relations between Taiwan and China are less volatile than they were a decade ago.

Strong economic ties serve as a hedge against hostilities.

Yet the status quo could be shaken as soon as January, when Taiwan voters elect a new president.

Alpha Phi Alpha continues

campus health awareness ULM’s Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will be discussing the dangers of alcohol at their “Drunk Driving Awareness” event in front of the SUB on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

This is part of a series that started at the beginning of the semester.

The fraternity has been promoting campus health by educating students and faculty on a range of different subjects.

Its previous discussion was about epilepsy, a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed,

causing seizures.

This is something the fraternity plans to carry on throughout the semester.

Javon Simms, a member of the fraternity, said this is something they feel an obligation to do because “there are a lot of things people need to be aware of.”

The fraternity will be in front of the SUB from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.

Smoke in Biedenharn prompts evacuation A malfunction in an air conditioner unit in Biedenharn Hall forced students, faculty and staff to evacuate the building to Brown Auditorium last Monday around 5 p.m.

The university reported no injuries or damage to the building.

This electrical glitch caused Biedenharm Room 113-B to fill with smoke, according to Julia Letlow, Director of Communication and Marketing in the Office of Public Information.

All classes in Biedenharn Hall resumed as scheduled Tuesday with the exception of one class held in Room 113-B.

Letlow said once the smoke was detected in Biedenharn Hall, the fire department was notified. She also said they immediately came to secure the building.

Monroe Fire Department and Physical Plant officials who quickly arrived on the scene officially determined the cause of smoke as electrical.

“It was a testament to how quickly our emergency responders acted,” Letlow said.

Any student, faculty or staff who detects smoke in building on campus can call 911 or university police at 342-5350.

SGA enters new ‘stage’ with 9 freshmen senators

Catherine Frazier said she noticed that student government is much different from when she was in high school, but she’s not letting that get in her way.

“I definitely look forward to meeting new people and working hard for ULM,” said Frazier, a freshman English major. “There are so many opportunities to experience new things in student government.”

Frazier is one of nine freshmen senators who were elected in what SGA adviser Laura Knotts called, one of the “most active elections” she has seen during her time at ULM. Frazier said she is thankful for the opportunity to “continue serving” the student community in college and is eager to start carrying out her duties.

Three students, including Frazier, were elected from each of ULM’s three colleges to serve on SGA. Joining Frazier from the College of Arts, Education and Sciences are Brian Jenkins, a Biology major, and Laura Beth Aulds, also a Biology major.

Baylee Howell, political science major, Taylor McGuffee, business administration major and Joseph Walker, risk management and insurance major, are the new senators from the College of Business and Social Sciences.

One of the main events will be the unveiling of the new permanent stage in the Grove.

The Grove is an area where student groups and alumni gather before football games to tailgate.

Last year, the SGA Senate decided that the stage would be a way to invest in the university’s student life.

SGA adviser Laura Knotts said the stage will be used for providing enter-

tainment at tailgating before games and will be made available to the surrouding community.

“This will open up the grove as a viable place for non-tailgating events,” Jennings said. “It’ll make it a lot easier to use the area, and I’m sure we will think up tons of uses for it.”

We objectify men, too

Use your resources We are only six weeks into the school year. But yes, we are struggling.

School gets tough. So why not use the school’s resources to your benefit?

Many of us remember thinking that we would need to buy our own printer and ink when we came to college. When we found out that we could print for free (or at least freer than buying our own printers and ink), we were relieved.

Remember the first time you found out about the color printer in Hanna Hall? It was good to know that you were covered in case you ever needed to print a colored graph.

Remember when you found out about Supplemental Intruction sessions as a freshman? Relief again, right?

In case you didn’t know, this campus offers a lot of resources that can be very helpful for many situations.

Need to use a Microsoft Office product? Use one of the computers at one of the many labs on campus.

Need to understand a concept? Talk to your department about tutoring.

Need a paper proofread? Hit up the Write Place.

Don’t understand what your foreign language professor is saying?

Try visiting the Language Lab. If you have an academic need on campus, there is likely help already available. If you don’t think you have the means to complete a project, you probably do on campus.

Check out all that’s offered and make sure to ask if you have a need. We are here to succeed. We may as well use our resources to make it easier.

“Dress for more sex.” “Scrawny to brawny.” “Get fit or die trying.”

What do these three phrases have in common? They are all from the covers of men’s magazines. Google Image search “men’s magazines,” and see what you find. I’ll make it easy for you: page after page of similar titles.

In a world dominated by the objectification of women and the refreshingly recent push to challenge these cultural norms, the influences the average man feels seems to have been forgotten.

Do men experience objectification in the broad sense that women do? No. Not even close.

Women have lived for centuries under the male gaze, their worth often evaluated based on their bodies. But are men beginning to feel a related pressure regarding their physical appearance connected with self-worth?

Consider these interesting facts from textbook “Gender In Communication: A Critical Introduction.”

Among men, there is an increased sale in cosmetics and hair transplants. A greater stigma is placed on being “fat,” and men report a 43 percent increase in body dissatisfaction in the last several years.

The push for muscular bodies is exemplified in the G.I. Joe action figure. In 1964, the doll had 12’’ biceps and a 44’’ chest. In 1992? G.I. Joe boasts 27’’ biceps and a 55’’ chest. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a bicep measurement of 22’’ at top form.

Careful, Joe – you’re in top-heavy danger of falling over.

Muscle dysmorphia – an obsession with muscularity and seeing one’s self as small when muscle is present – is a psychological disorder that can cause excessive exercise, extreme diets and anabolic steroid use. Why is this happening?

It’s happening because mainstream media such as magazines, advertisements and movies portray the “ideal” man through a narrow lens: They are tall, strong and impeccably groomed.

Never mind the countless men who are not tall, are naturally lanky or who don’t possess a chiseled “Photoshop” six-pack. The message sent to men? Be tall. Be strong. Be attractive based on our standards.

Men are also affected in fashion. Tyra Banks, of America’s Next Top Model, challenges standard fashion industry norms. In a recent episode, she spoke to one of the male models regarding his shot.

“The reason why I wanted to include guys in America’s Next Top Model is: you guys don’t get paid as much, you’re accessories; this photo is what I am fighting against, the male model as the accessory. Are you just that

male model that gets paid 10 percent of what that female model makes?” Banks asked.

After hearing this, I found the following: The highest paid female model, Gisele Bundchen, earned $47 million in 2014. Sean O’Pry, the highest paid male model, earned $1.5 million the same year.

We see men’s bodies put on spotlight, from magazine articles to movies to high fashion. This is objectification…. or is it?

A couple years ago, the Women’s Media Center, a nonprofit organization, tracked female standings in the media industry. They provided percentages of women holding careers in the field. I’ll provide the reverse percentages for some, but not all, of the positions held by men in broadcast, cable and Netflix television shows as of 2012-2013.

Men make up 76 percent of executive producers, 70 percent of writers, 89 percent of directors, 87 percent of editors and 98 percent of directors in photography.

Interesting thought, huh? So even if men are being objectified, the numbers show men still control the gaze and these (male) media professionals are the ones in power, encouraging the shallow emphasis on the outward – not only for women, but also for men. This correlates to men and masculinities scholar David Buchbinder’s argument that “the difference in men’s self-objectification is that it is not for women’s pleasure as much as it is to compete with other men.”

My argument then is that yes, there is some emerging objectification of men. But the male leaders in media are still the one’s making the majority calls and it is their ideologies and agendas pushing not only female but now also male objectification.

Ideally, we would live in a world where every body shape, size and gender was appreciated as the beautiful tapestry humanity is composed of. But we don’t.

And while I do not want anyone - male or female – feeling less-than based on their physical appearance, I wonder if this taste of objectification and pressure will spur a wider male audience into action, realizing even more the impossible standards placed on women and take action beside the women fighting for the illumination of and the end to objectification. contact Karissa Smith at smithk8@warhawks.ulm.edu

Censorship is complicated

“Free speech is good” is literally the least controversial statement I can make.

It is a principle that’s accepted by basically everyone on a conceptual level.

In fact, this week the American Library Association is celebrating Banned Books Week to celebrate our right to read what we haven’t always been allowed to and to draw attention to censorship that still happens today.

Because censorship does still happen today.

Yes, censorship is alive and well.

New Zealand is currently banning a young adult novel, Iran is imprisoning a political cartoonist, Egypt has jailed journalists for merely reporting the news, and the American Library Association is able to put out an annual list of books that have routinely been challenged or removed from libraries.

It seems everyone and their 15th cousin supports free speech, and yet we also have a constant censorship problem. So how do we have such a situation.

It’s because, to be honest, free speech is complicated.

It’s very easy to say that you support “free speech”, but actually acting on it is something totally different. What does “Free Speech” even actually mean in real, concrete terms? What are the limits?

Where does your right to speak your mind end and another person’s right to feel safe and comfortable begin?

What kind of speech is rightfully protected, and what’s harmful? Is speech harmful at all?

None of these questions are exactly easy to answer, and each can have multiple answers. Just take a look at the ALA’s top 10 banned list for any year and you’ll see reasons including, but not in any way limited to, masturbation, sex education, nudity, violence, anti-family, political and religious viewpoint, drugs, gambling, offensive language, cultural insensitivity, deceptions of bullying, “unsuited for age group”, and my own personal favorite, “contains controversial issues”.

I bring all this up to say that, on some level, I get some of the reasons people try to restrict freedom of speech.

Words and ideas are powerful, hugely powerful even. They can change whole lives forever, and that’s not something to be taken lightly.

I understand that parents are concerned about what media their kids consume. That stuff can lay a whole moral groundwork for a person.

I understand why they want that, but widespread censorship isn’t the answer.

Especially when it comes to books.

I consider myself a very, very strong supporter of free speech and I truly believe that the right to free speech needs to be as absolute as possible.

So this Banned Books Week I encourage you to fight against censorship on the side of free expression.

We’re blowing things out of proportion

When Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old MacArthur High School freshman in Irving, Texas, awoke for school Monday morning, he had no idea his invention would lead to arrest and subsequent suspension.

Mohamed had an ingenious idea to build a digital clock out of a metal pencil case, and then present the invention to his engineering teacher.

His teacher praised Mohamed on his invention, but advised him to keep it in his backpack for his remaining classes.

In English the clock began to beep, and his teacher confiscated it, thinking it was a bomb.

Later, Mohamed was yanked out of class with the principal and a police officer. Mohamed was led to a room with five

police officers and interrogated at length.

After, Mohamed was handcuffed and escorted to a juvenile detention center where he was fingerprinted and had mug shots taken and was interrogated again before his parents arrived to take him home.

Mohamed was subsequently suspended from school for three days.

The question remains if this was a normal reaction to misunderstood items or was Mohamed dragged through extra troubles because of his Islamic descent.

It seems a bit unnecessary to confiscate the clock in one class period and later come in and arrest him in front of everyone.

The school claims that the officers were called in because the clock resembled a “movie bomb” yet there are no reports of a bomb squad being called.

There is also photographic evidence of the officers getting into the car with Mohamed and his “movie bomb.”

I’m not sure about anyone else, but I can assure you that I would never get in the car with anything that I thought could potentially blow up.

Islamaphobia seems to be heavily incorporated in this particular case. It seems that ever since the attack on the twin towers, people of Islamic descent are always linked to terrorism.

I went to high school with an Egyptian boy who once told me that he considered moving back to Egypt with his parents because he was tired of the dirty looks he received from our classmates and teased about being a terrorist.

Mohamed told news reporters that as he walked into the interrogation room one of the officers joked that Mohamed was just what he thought. What exactly did he mean by that? Was it the fact that he wore glasses or was it because of brown skin?

I never understood how some Americans could feel so comfortable judging someone because of their skin color.

Why is it okay for us to say that we feel uncomfortable around a Muslim student because of 9/11 but not okay to say we feel uncomfortable around a white student because of Columbine?

The principal also sent a letter out to the parents at the school informing them of the incident and reminding them to talk to their children about “reporting suspicious activity” and to not bring “prohibited items to school.” I don’t really know what is so suspicious about a clock.

Although I understand the school is concerned about the safety of its students, it seems to me that this was way over the top.

If the principal thought it was a bomb why wasn’t the bomb squad called? Why were the students not escorted outside to a safe distance while the device was being investigated?

Subsequent suspension also seems to be taking it too far since it was determined that it was just a clock and that Mohamed had no malicious intent upon bringing it to school.

All of this leads me to believe that Mohamed’s race played a part in the school, as well as the police offers, reaction. contact Corlyn Key at keyc@warhawks.ulm.edu

Nepal nation celebrates new constitution

As Shaquille Belson raised his hand in oath for the second time, he not only swore loyalty to his badge but also to the student community.

Belson is an alumnus who renewed his oath as a campus police officer at Wednesday’s ceremony in the library.

Belson has worked for ULM PD for almost two years and said he’s excited about the new officers on board.

“It allows fresh ideas,” said Belson, a corporal for the ULM PD. “That’s the whole thing about change.

Change is tweaking what you already have to make it work better.”

Belson has gotten to know his new co-workers and said he is confident they will work well together.

“These people are great guys, they care about you and have kids of their own,” said Belson, a corporal for the ULM PD. “They just want things to be cool, calm and collective.”

Belson said his goal from “day one” has not only been the safety of students but gaining their trust as well.

“When a student is in distress, that student will remember my name, face and it will deescalate the situation like that,” Belson said.

Belson said that law enforcement has been “black-eyed” over the years and building quality relationships with students is important.

“We’re at a point right now that it’s been in turmoil and change needs to come, and it has to be productive change to get a good eye back on law

“Conversation is the key to the heart.”

Belson said he plans to contribute to that productivity by passing on his experience to the new officers.

“I tell them stuff the older guys told me because these guys have been doing this so long that obviously they’ve been doing something right,” Belson said.

Miranda Dees is one of the new officers who was sworn in and said she is pleased with her new job so far.

“They have a really good department,” said Dees. “They encourage training and good communication, so it’s a good job here.”

Dees also said she is eager to start working with Torregrossa on forming a closer relationship with students.

“I think it’s important to be able to communicate with students and to be able to support them,” Dees said.

Belson couldn’t agree more with Dees and said in order for campus police to reach that mutuality with students, communication is vital.

“Conversation is the key to the heart. If you find out what someone’s heart is you find out what they’re thinking and it really helps,” Belson said. contact Tyler Smith at smithtw@warhawks.ulm.edu

Firecrackers lit the sky as the South Asian country of Nepal welcomed the world’s newest constitution.

The Nepalese, shaken by two devastating earthquakes this year, and against a backdrop of more than half a century of political strife, now have something to cherish.

“This is the time of celebration” said Krishna Bista, assistant professor of education. “The years of political turmoil have come to an end. We should welcome this constitution wholeheartedly.”

The Himalayan nation was never colonized and has always remained a sovereign state, according to the Nepali newspapers. They added that “for the first time in history, Nepalese are sovereign in the true sense of the term.”

“My mother said that there was a Dipawali Celebration and the major cities were beautified like a bride,” said Nitesh Chaulagain, a computer science major. “Candles were lit, color patterns were made and there were bike rallies too.”

Vast majority of Parliamentarians supported the implementation of new constitution. The three prominent parties known as Nepali Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal and the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) -- collaborated for the majority while few other smaller opposing parties either voted against or boycotted the process.

Professor Bista said it’s the first constitution drafted by representatives of the people.

“In the past, constitutions were either written by the monarch or by a committee selected by the king or queen” Bista said.

Nepali Prime Minister Sushil Koirala tweeted, “It is a matter of pride for all Nepalese that the constitutional assembly has approved the people’s constitution.”

The new constitution has officially ended the war, but some ethnic groups say the division leaves them underrepresented in parliament. They include the Madhesi and Tharu ethnic minorities, who mainly live in the southern plains along the border with India.

Up ‘til Dawn stays up to recruit

Gauge Stringer is a freshman who said he didn’t want to join just any campus organization. He wanted to find one that would stay Up ‘til Dawn.

Stringer joined ULM’s Up ‘til Dawn after its interest meeting in Walker Hall on Monday.

He said he liked the idea of helping people he knows nothing about.

“I was looking for a way to get involved on my campus and I know from Prep that this specific RSO was for a good cause,” said Stringer, a prenursing major.

Up ‘til Dawn’s mission is to recruit people like Stringer who will make a yearly commitment to raise money for sick children at St. Jude’s Hospital.

Now that Stringer has joined a fundraising team, he said he’s ready

to get started.

“Even if I don’t help somebody who’s ill, if I help somebody that I met here tonight, that’ll make me feel good,” Stringer said.

Other males also joined Stringer at the interest meeting.

Board member April Stelly said this was “very pleasing,” since the organization is mostly female.

“Diversity is always a great thing,” said Stelly, a sophomore pre-pharmacy major. “We want a vast majority of people from different organizations, religions and races because then they’ll go back and tell their friends and get them involved as well.”

Stelly said they plan to meet that goal on Tuesday for National Recruitment Day. “We’re kind of in a competition

with other universities and their Up ‘til Dawn organizations and we have a goal of getting 100 people signed up to be on our Up ‘til Dawn team to raise money,” Stelly said.

She said they will be in the Quad Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. and will be there until 5 p.m.

They will also be doing games, selling t-shirts and all proceeds will go to St. Jude.

Meanwhile, Stringer said he wants to make an impact on the children of St. Jude by using what he learns in nursing.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to look at them and not know what they’re going through, but be able to convey to them that I can help,” Stringer said. contact Tyler Smith at smithtw@warhawks.ulm.edu

Football and cooler weather isn’t the only thing that the fall season is bringing in. Tis’ the time for breakups to turn into make-ups and “flings” to turn into an official “thing.”

According to relationship specialist Racheal McCarter from People Magazine, individuals would normally rather be single find themselves desiring to be “cuffed.”

The term “cuffed” is defined by

modern culture as being tied down in or by a serious relationship.

It’s crazy how cold weather and prolonged indoor activity causes singles to look for love or in other words—cuffed.

McCarter said, “Be careful not to confuse cuffing season as an opportunity to score a serious relationship, though many are temporary, others make it through to the other side.”

The leaves are falling, sweater weather is quickly approaching and cuffing season is underway, looking for people seeking a temporary cool weather cuddle buddy.

Students don professional apparel in fashion show

Students in the audience yelled, beat the runway and even picked up chairs over their heads, as the judges for the 2015 Career Style Show announced the top five.

With the career fair just around the corner, students need to know what is appropriate to wear when meeting a potential employer.

Those in attendance learned the importance of professionalism and business etiquette.

“Being professionally dressed for an interview or career fair portrays a positive image of yourself to the potential employer,” said Roslynn Pogue, the Director of the Office of Career Connections. “The first impression is the last impression.”

Students modeled what to wear and what

not to wear for a career fair, interview, business lunch/ dinner, sporting/charity event, conference/convention and banquet formal.

Camille Reffett, a junior nursing major, said, “It was a really good reminder that Perkins the way you dress and present yourself can play a big part in the opportunities you receive.”

Spencer Perkins modeled formal banquet wear and made the top five for men.

“Some outfits can be deemed too formal for certain events that only require business casual. The same principle applies when wearing something that is not formal enough to an interview or banquet,” said Perkins, junior risk managing major.

The models showed off their personalities during the “fun walk.”

For their last walk, they used their favorite props including light sabers, wands, capes and sunglasses.

Audience members also participated by answering business etiquette questions after each category. Several students had to dance before answering their questions.

Child Center continues daycare excellence Staff provides 5-star childcare despite staff’s struggles

Though operating the Child Development Center proves no walk in the park, a state ranking system handed it a five-star rating for the sixth consecutive year.

This ranking comes from the Louisiana Quality Start School Readiness Rating System. It is the highest rating in the state a child development or early learning center can earn. ULM’s Child Development Center was the first in Ouachita Parish to earn that rating in 2008.

However, the center’s success has not come with out complications along the way.

Emily Williamson, director of the Child Development Center, has fought for this high standard of excellence in care and education for 12 years.

Williamson has also fought inflammatory breast cancer for four years.

Even throughout her fight, the center has blossomed under her leadership.

She continues the fight against cancer while running the center.

Despite this, the center does not just provide award-winning childcare services under her leadership.

Williamson said the center is important to ULM for various reasons.

The center supports the faculty, staff and students of ULM with its tools, state-of-the-art facilities, outdoor classroom and strong faculty.

folio. The state audits this portfolio and evaluates centers’ administrative practices, staff qualifications and family and community involvement.

The center features educational tools for certain majors on campus.

Students in the School of Education have the opportunity to learn teaching skills by visiting the center.

Nursing students can use it and perform basic medical examinations.

The benefit for faculty is the opportunity to place their children in an award-winning childcare facility.

Brooke Foy, an art instructor, has enrolled her child at the Child Development Center for several years.

“I want my daughter to get the best education,” Foy said.

Foy also said Williamson’s concern for the details impresses her. Every aspect is thought out, she said.

The benefits also extend to the students at ULM. A student may enroll his or her child at the center.

All of these “Junior Warhawks” even learn about ULM while at the

center. This includes interacting with Ace and learning interesting facts about the university.

Tra’von Washington, a senior kinesiology major, is going into his fourth year as a worker at the Child Development Center.

“It’s important for the kids to be learning,” Washington said.

Washington also praised Williamson’s strength and courage in her fight with breast cancer. He also said those two attributes show Williamson’s passion for her work as well.

Williamson said her faith played a strong role in that work for the center.

“God gives us different mission fields and this is mine,” Williamson said.

She also said a particular Bible verse has helped with her mission at the Child Development Center and battling her cancer: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” contact Alan Rawles at rawlesar@warhawks.ulm.edu

Computing Center considers printing changes

Computing Center directors spoke to SGA senators Thursday about how it will adjust the new printing system so that students have access to as many prints as they need for class.

Chance Eppinette, director of the computing center, said the new print system that charges students more for printing a double-sided page was not intended for profit.

“The [old system] was never set up as we intended it to be. The duplex prints were only counted as one print,” Eppinette said.

The new system is now charging how the old system should have charged all along, according to computing center staff.

Now, instead of charging one charge per page regardless of if it’s printed front and back, the system charges 1.5 prints for a double-sided page.

Because of higher charges, students have lost 50 double sided prints or 100 pages worth of text.

The Computing Center is looking

into making changes into how students print so that running out of available prints won’t happen.

One option considered is rollover prints, which would allow unused prints to roll over to the next week.

Another option is crediting students with a set number of prints one-time, at the beginning of the semester. Students would probably have 2400 prints per semester.

This would allow students to allocate their prints in a way that’s best for them. Students could then have more prints during crucial times that may require more than 150 prints, like syllabus week or weeks full of exams.

There is also an option of allowing students to purchase more Eppinette prints when they run out.

SGA senators also brought up the option of sharing prints. Many students already share prints by allowing friends to access their accounts using their username and password.

Senators were also interested in a more secure way to share.

The Computing Center also

revealed that changes to Warhawk email will be changed very soon.

Gotham city madness ensues

Mazed-crazed, ‘Scorch Trials’

MadFest Fundraiser awards an exhaust contest to antique winner.

Batman is one of the most talked about DC comic heroes and a blockbuster movie franchise.

“Batman: Arkham Knight” is one of this year’s top selling video games.

The game revolves around Batman against Scarecrow and the mysterious new villain Arkham Knight.

The villains plan to unleash a toxin over the city of Gotham that causes hallucinations and drives people insane.

Batman is determined to put a stop to Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight.

One of the most outstanding aspects of the game is the main story arc. It was brilliantly scripted as the story was cohesive with Batman’s persona.

The Arkham Knight, unlike its previous installments, allow players to utilize one of Batman’s famous vehicles - the Batmobile. It is reinforced with more armor that has afterburners and it’s virtually indestructible.

The Batmobile allows Batman to race around the city and to fight smaller weaponized vehicles with its missiles or to simply trample them.

Batman always has the same setting and plot. Batman saves the city from a certain villain trying to blow it up.

This storyline could be a bit repetitive and tiring.

Batman is rated M for mature.

Overall it’s a great game that is visually stunning on the next gen consoles.

ArkLaMiss launches Madfest auto festival

The automotive culture of Northern Louisiana could be getting a boost in performance soon.

Local automotive performance shop, MadTunes Racing plans on giving the area the recognition that is due.

MadTunes Racing held a fundraiser for a car festival that owner Jason Madden wants to see come to life.

Madden has been planning MadFest for a few years now. MadFest is planned be a huge car and truck culture event similar to the Sturgis motorcycle rally.

Madden became passionate for MadFest because he wanted to have something that embodied car and truck people.

MadFest plans to have events such as: a street legal one-half mile drag race, truck pulls and automotive themed movies shown at the local theatre.

The fundraiser for MadFest was used primarily as a way to promote MadFest.

Various events at the fundraiser included an exhaust competition and a burnout competition. One hundred percent of the proceeds went to the West Carroll Chamber of Commerce in preparation of MadFest.

Madden said that if for some reason MadFest does not receive approval, the money will be used for other Parish sponsored events.

While MadFest does not have a specific time, Madden has already spoken to various groups who would be involved in approving the festival to happen.

The mayor of Oak Grove is very much in favor of MadFest.

Madden is very passionate about the idea of a huge automotive event happening in the north Louisiana area.

His goal is for the event to cater to the local and national automotive culture and to help improve recognition for the area.

MadFest has not been officially approved by the West Carroll Chamber of Commerce, but the idea of how great of an impact MadFest could be is sure to bring attention to the Oak Grove community. contact Alan Rawles at rawlesar@warhawks.

“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” is the second installment of the Maze Runner franchise.

I thought this film was breathtaking.

It possesses the most thrilling, eye-catching and daring scenes of the series so far.

The film throws obstacles in the group’s way, each of which bumps up the entertainment in the process.

This made the film visually pleasing.

Maze Runner was suspenseful -- which kept me on the edge of my seat with life or death situations and betrayal.

“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” is a mid-series film that is trying to tease the final installment of the franchise without giving the plot away.

After an intense hour in, you’ll almost feel the film holding itself back, although it doesn’t stop progressing it does stall.

But for me, it gave me just enough so that by the time the credits starting rolling I was still fully invested in the film and ready to see the finale.

“The Scorch Trials” immediately picked up from where the first sequal left off.

Thomas and his fellow Gladers are transported to a remote heavily guarded outpost after being rescued from the maze.

They find themselves in trouble after uncovering a diabolical plot from the organization WCKD. The Gladers stage an escape into the Scorch and encounter dangerous obstacles along the way -- some involing zombies.

The Gladers only hope may be to find the “Right Hand,” a group of resistance fighters who can help them battle WCKD.

Tide victory decisive yet ULM miscues prove costly

Soccer The speed and aggressiveness of the Panthers of Georgia State proved too much for the Warhawks as they were edged out in a 1-0 contest in the GSU Soccer Complex Friday.

The contest marked the first of nine conference games which ULM will compete in to close out the season.

Despite several close chances in the second the Warhawks were never able to avenge a first half goal, which proved to be the game winner.

Outshooting the Warhawks 16 to 3 in the first half the Panthers came out with a high level of intensity to begin the match.

In the 37th minute, amidst a struggle for the ball in front of the net, Caitlyn Ray of GSU took advantage of the confusion to put in the game-winning goal for the panthers. Freshman goalkeeper Brooke-Lynn Scoggins made a season high 10 saves.

on the Warhawks and pounding the defense into submission.

Over the course of the game the triple threat of Derrick Henry, Kenyan Draken and Damien Harris accomplished that.

The trio went for 140 yards on the game including one toucdown.

Although ULM held Alabama to over 200 yards below its average of 500 per game, the Tide still established their dominance on the offensive side of the ball.

Offensively, the Warhawks needed to make several big plays and cut down on any penalties.

The Tide snuffed out all of the offensive designs of the Warhawks and forced them into converting only three of 20 third downs throughtout the games.

The running game was nonexistent mustering a measly nine yards throughout the game and only 85 yards in the air.

As dominant as the defense of Alabama proved to be throughout the game, several drops and miscues were made which halted potential scoring drives.

The team also couldn’t afford to make too many penatlies and ended up committing 10 for 90 yards.

Winning the turnover battle was also critical as they were going up againt an offense that was extremely versatile and effective.

The Warhawks threw two interceptions in the game causing only one takeaway themselves. They failed to turn this takeaway into points.

The errors that the Warhawks made are correctable and with improvements made on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, the rest of the season looks promising.

The Warhawk faithful went into ULM’s matchup versus Alabama Saturday with memories of the school’s upset win over the Crimson Tide in 2007 lingering in their minds.

But several differences existed going into that game in 2007 and the one Saturday night.

Alabama in 2007 featured a new head coach in Nick Saban that ended up going 6-6 on the season and had not yet established itself as a football dynasty.

The Warhawks caused five uncharacteristic Tide turnovers in that game and stopped several game-winning drives at the end to preserve a 21-14 victory.

Going into Saturday night’s game ULM had to be excellent defensivelly against a dynamic and talented offensive attack.

It was imperative the Warhawks not allow the Tide run game to be established because that would give Alabama control of time of possession.

Volleyball squad serves up 2 back-to-back thrillers vs UAB A 2-1 set deficit and the exhaustion which comes from the last leg of a five day, 1,400 mile road trip were not enough to deter the Warhawks as they won their second five set come from behind victory in a row against UAB Monday.

The Warhawks were lead by Junior Taylor Zaeske who tallied a career high 19 kills, as well as Sophomore Bayleigh Hoffman who led the team with 49 assists. Many other Warhawks added to the stat line giving the team a total of 59 kills.

The team battled back in the fourth winning a tight one before going into the final and closing the match out for another come back win.

Coach Hiltz was pleased with the tenacity her team showed.

Recruits still need talent in classroom Athletics department subdues talk of lowering admission requirements

Increases in ULM’s enrollment mirrored a recent uptick in verbal commitments to the Warhawks football program, but the coaches showed a desire to be given more ‘latitude’ when it came to admissions standards..

Currently ULM’s standards are above the minimum set by the NCAA, which has raised questions over whether or not that affects ULM’s ability to recruit.

ULM was initially an open admittance school that accepted all of those who applied. That changed with the passing of a state law in 2011 that required all universities to be selective in their admissions processes.

This meant that students who fell below the required minimum would not be allowed to attend.

“What we wanted with selective admission is having more prepared, better prepared students more likely to matriculate all the way

through”, said Brett Bennett, faculty athletic representative.

An exception does exist for those with a special talent under the ‘“talent exemption” policy of the school.

This includes those in athletics as well as band, dance and corral. The exemption, in accordance with the school’s motto of “seeking the truth,” also allows the school to depart from traditional admissions standards for diversity.

This could relate to national origin, race, gender, and other qualifications.

As of now only eight percent of students are allowed admittance under the talent exemption policy.

Athletes that are recruited by coaches but fall below ULM’s academic guidelines must first file an exemption, and go through the NCAA clearinghouse before they can be accepted into the Warhawk community.

When first put in place, the policy was chaotic and disorganized, according to Bennett.

“We went through a time where that eight percent was being used but there was no organized way that the individuals would be admitted,” Bennett said.

“The NCAA minimum requirements are going up...”

Brian Wickstrom Athletic Director Bennett, senior associate athletics director Kevin Price and director of compliance Meghan Mazza set new rules in place in February that sought to sort out the confusion.

To do this, the procedure aspect was separated from the admissions process that meant that coaches would be responsible for managing risks on their own teams.

Although talk has come up recently of lowering standards or creating a little more leeway for coaches, the talent exemption policy has been used sparingly since it was first put in place in 2011.

Approximately 64 people have been admitted through the policy since its inception, which is one of the lowest numbers in the state.

President Nick Bruno is appreciative of this statisic and believes it has benefited ULM as an

academic institution.

“It has given ULM the opportunity to increase its retention, graduation rates, to attract well qualified students, and to live up to that covenant I have with the students,” Bruno said Bruno set the current standards using data collected over a five-year period. Athletic director Brian Wickstrom feels the standards are where they need to be.

“This is the seventh school I’ve been at and each has had different ad- Wickstrom mit by exception policies or standards. I think our policy is sufficient for the coaches and recruits or athletes to be able to win,” Wickstrom said.

Despite the current difference in academic requirements between ULM and the NCAA, that difference is lessening.

Tide crushes hope for repeat ULM

34-0 Alabama defense stifles ULM’s offensive efforts

The Crimson Tide halted any hope Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium to repeat the magic of the Warhawks’ 2007 surprise win.

Coach Berry was dissappointed in the performance of his team.

“I liked our gameplans coming in, but we still didn’t execute as well as we would have liked,” Berry said.

While the offense of Alabama was held to 14 points at half, the Warhawks could never gather any momentum of their own.

As the second half unfolded, the Tide started to roll offensively and quarterback Jake Coker went for 158 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

The Warhawks were stifled by the rigidness of the Alabama defense, which has been a staple of Saban

Passing coached teams.

“We kind of missed ourselves tonight. We had a lot of busts. I had some drops,” said wide-out Ajalen Holley.

The Tide forced two interceptions from Garrett Smith and sacked him four times over the course of the game.

The offense mustered only 92 yards total offense.

Alabama struck first on a touchdown run from three yards out on fourth down.

A Smith interception led to the Tide’s second touchdown of the half as Jake Coker threw it to Calvin Ridley from 15 yards out.

An interception on Alabama’s next drive led to no Warhawk’s points and the teams entered the half with a 14-0 score.

Alabama took their first possession of the second half down the field for a field goal after yet another Warhawk drive ended in a punt.

put up its first touchdown of the second half.

The score came on a Coker pass to Michael Nysewander from 19 yards out.

After adding another field goal to their tally, the Tide intercepted Smith for the second time during the game

and turned it into seven more points.

Coker registered his third touchdown of the half tossing it to ArDarius Stewart from 16 yards out.
