HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Hello Everyone and welcome to the latest edition of our sUCCess magazine. In these unprecedented times we’ve had to take unprecedented action. We’ve made lots of changes and taken lots of steps to continue educating the young people of UCC. The magazine has also adapted and this is our first completely electronic version - we are very proud of the students and staff who have contributed to its content through their actions. It is really important to note what a fantastic group of people we have here at Ullswater. Every single student, parent, carer and member of staff has been doing an amazing job throughout the lock down period and as we begin to come out of the other side we know we can rely on the whole community to continue to support one another. The coming year will bring with it even more challenges and working together we can guarantee it will be our best ever! Stay safe, stay in touch and enjoy a snapshot of life here at Ullswater. Mr Gilby

OUR NEWLY ELECTED COUNCIL

2

Following elections in December, the newly elected members of the School Council have already met for two very productive meetings. Discussions centred on the aims each student has for improving the school this year, and it was clear that every member of the council was full of enthusiasm and excitement to be involved in such an important part of school life. PAIRED READING The paired reading initiative focuses on strengthening the community here at UCC through building confidence in reading and ensuring KS3 are on track to be confident leaders and eventually, GCSE ready, additionally life skills are also learned. Students found the experience empowering, encouraging and uplifting. The program runs throughout the year, two 20 minute sessions per week. Rachel Hope

This year’s Harry Potter Book Night was once again a magical evening of Hogwarts-style fun. Over the course of the evening, students made fantastical wands and chocolate frog boxes (complete with real chocolate frogs!), were sorted into houses by the sorting hat, placed their names in the Tri-Wizard Cup and even tried their hand at writing using ink and feather quills. The night was rounded off with a hearty, Hogwarts feast. Karen Simkins

ERS

Year 11 Health and Social Care students were visited by the Chief Officer of Eden Carers. The students learnt how Eden carers support children, young people and adults who find themselves caring after a relative or friend who, due to a disability, illness or old age, cannot manage at home without help. The students put together boxes of love to show appreciation for the role the carers play in our community. Annette Davidson
