Year 10 Rugby On the road The Year 10 Rugby team have made fantastic progress this season in the National and County Cups.

In the County Cup they played Keswick (who they beat in the final last year) and managed to come away with another convincing victory. They take on Kirby Stephen in the next round.

In the National Cup they have twice travelled to Lancaster to play ties, as well playing a derby game against QEGS. In the first round they travelled to Wigan to play Hutton Grammar school drawing 24-24 with a last minute try

by Olly Bibby. As the away team takes the victory if there is a draw, the boys moved on the next round with Dillon Bolger receiving man of the match.

In Round 2 they played Standish Community High in Preston, winning 33-7. The game was closer than the

score suggests, in was only in the final 10 minutes where UCC’s larger squad paid dividends with fresh legs coming off the bench to finish the game strongly. Three ‘man of the match’ awards were given to Harry Dodd, Olly Bibby and Mark Mason.

After all the travelling we came back into the County and faced our old foes QEGS, beating them comfortably 43-21 with Olly Saxon, Harry Dodd and Dylan Thompson taking man of the match awards.

The next round is yet to be arranged as we await our next opponent to play their round 3 game. The squad have continued to work hard in training and endeavour to go as far as possible in both competitions. We wish them luck.

A special mention goes to Luke Coulston, pictured smiling, despite the head injury he sustained against QEGS. His attitude towards the club has been impeccable and this has been proven by his performances.

A UCC star - Olly Bibby: Wigan Warriors RLFC The UCC PE department would like to congratulate Olly Bibby from Year 10 who has been selected to play Rugby league for Wigan Warriors.

Warriors are a professional Rugby league club in who compete in the Super League. Rugby League is a slightly different ‘code’ of rugby, one which we are less familiar with at UCC as we play ‘Union’.

A UCC star- Olly Bibby: Wigan Warriors RLFC How long have you played Rugby?

I have played both rugby union and league since the age of 6! I have played for local clubs and have travelled over the Whitehaven to play for Hensingham RLFC since Penrith Pumas folded.

How did you get scouted by Wigan and did you have to attend trials?

I actually didn’t ever have to attend any trials. In year 7 I was spotted whilst playing for Hensignham and a Wigan scout said they would like to watch me for the next few years and see how I developed. I didn’t hear anything from them for a few years until they called me offering me a contract a few months ago. It was nice to not have to trial as it took the pressure off me performing in a controlled game.

How often do you train and play each week?

We train three times per week, usually with one game per week.

Which Rugby League team do you support?

I support Wigan Warriors and I also follow the NRL in Australasia but don’t support a team in that league.

How did you get into Rugby league?

My dad used to play rugby league professionally in the super league and originally my family are from the Wigan area. Rugby League is incredibly popular in that area.

When you play Rugby Union for UCC do you find it difficult to transfer codes or does it come quite naturally?

I never really have any trouble in games, I suppose I have played both codes for so long so I can click into the right mode easily.

Do you prefer Rugby league or Rugby Union?

I prefer rugby league for its fast pace nature and lack of stoppages.

Is your position in Rugby union the same as your Rugby league position?

No my positions do differ. In League I play ‘Stand-off’ which is similar to a fly half in union. In union I play in the centres.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt by joining Wigan RLFC and playing at a higher performance level?

I have learnt to play and approach all forms of rugby life with discipline and ensure I am always committed.

To all aspiring UCC sports students, what advice would you give in order to reach a higher sports performance level?

I’d say never give up and give it your all, if it’s what you want to achieve you need to put in the effort for it to work out.

Bounce! Ella Dixon – Trampolining

UCC Gymnastics Competitions The UCC gymnasts had a very successful day at the Cumbria Schools novice gymnastics championships.

Twenty three gymnasts competed in this event, ranging from year 7 to year 10.

The U12 team produced some excellent routines and vaults enabling them to achieve a team gold.

A particularly polished performance from Katie Greenwood led to her achieving the individual gold

medal. The U14 A team were equally impressive winning team silver. Amy Thompson shone in her individual routine and was awarded the individual gold.

Finally, the over 14 team comprising of six year 10 girls, three of whom were representing UCC for the first time, achieved team gold. Ruby Eden, with her graceful routine and flawless vault took the individual gold and Lucy Oliver winning the individual bronze.

This was an overall fantastic result for the school. Taking individual gold in all the categories and team gold in two out of the three categories is quite an achievement.

Moving onto Pastures new, with use of the new PRUFC 4G astro.

The first term has been busy for all UCC rugby teams. Almost all teams from Y7 - Y10 have now had the pleasure of playing fixtures on the brand new pristine 4G surface at Penrith RUFC. Despite some bumps and burns from the astro surface, there has been plenty slick and fast paced rugby being played.

We hope we can keep as many games ON as possible through the poor winter weather by using the facility when needed.

Ella Dixon in Year 8 is having a fantastic season representing Carlisle trampolining club all over the country. This year Ella has competed in the National Individual League 1 and in the synchro competition. In the individual competition, she won a gold and silver in the qualifiers and took bronze in the finals. In synchro, she won two silvers and a bronze in the qualifiers and at the finals she and her partner qualified for the national championships.

The championships were held at Sheffield’s Institute of Sport.

In the English Championships she competed in the gold category, she managed to qualify in synchro, where she and her partner took bronze in the finals. In the double mini trampoline Ella qualified for the North of England team finals at Birmingham, she finished in 8th place, which took her to the finals in Nottingham; here she took the National bronze medal.

In the northern closed championships, Ella took bronze in double mini trampoline, silver in the individual championships and GOLD in the synchro.

Ella has also competed in the David Ward Hunt Cup which was her first international held at Gillingham in Kent. She was up against 73 girls including the National squad from Poland and Sweden. She was hoping for a top 50 finish and she placed 11th - an amazing achievement. In synchro, as it was an international she was in the 17 years and under group.

She and her partner finished 6th.

What amazing achievement and we wish her more success over the following year.

Year 7 Rugby It has been a great start to the sports calendar for the Year 7s with large numbers attending training, supported by a number of keen older helpers. They have played a number of festival style matches against other schools including QEGS, Dallam, Kirby Lonsdale, K.Kendal and Austin Friars.

The squad have produced some good performances and are definitely starting to develop a lot more structure to their game.

With this improvement they’ll be force to be reckoned with in the County Cup next year. Year 7 rugby training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes, players of all abilities are welcome to come along. to Michael Carrick of 7SXB for his

outstanding goal keeping, Will Sampson scored the decisive goal.

The first cross country event of the year was held up the road at QEGS. A team of 12 athletes were selected to run in the annual Year 7 cross-country event. There were a huge number of entrants this year with over 150 runners in both the boys and girls events.

The year 7 girls and boys were fantastic. The Year 7 girls put in an excellent team performance coming in 5th overall with the boys battling to 15th position overall. Well done to all runners.

The highest placed UCC girl was Maia Estil who was 31st out of 146, a fantastic achievement.

The next cross country event is to be held at Kirkby Stephen on 5th December for years 7-10, with over 50 runners selected to represent UCC.

In the rugby, 7RXC beat 7RD three tries to nil, with Mason Flemming scoring a hat-trick of tries. Similarly, for the year 7 girls, one form inparticular seemed to dominate both sporting finals. 7RD won both the hockey and Netball finals.

England Netball Trip Liverpool Echo Arena Ullswater Community College teamed up with Kirkby Stephen Grammar school on a visit to Liverpool Echo arena to experience ‘A day in the life of an international netball player‘.

The day consisted of different workshops all with the view to give a behind the scenes experience of a match day and what a professional netball player’s life is now like.

The final morning session was learning more about the umpiring role with England’s own professional umpire Gary Burgess.

The girls got to be involved in a session on the netball court with England netball coaches, followed by a behind the scenes tour of the dressing rooms. They acted out interview scenes and discussed the role of media and how it can promote netball.

travelled to Cockermouth School to compete in the U13 girls North Cumbria mini hockey tournament.

Following a thorough warm up and tactical preparation the girls were prepared to take on their

won two games, drew one and lost one. This placed them second in the pool and therefore they’ve progressed to the semi-finals of the tournament. The girls put up a good fight in a derby semi-final against QEGS, who proved to be the stronger side on the day.

Year 9 Netball Tournament Kings The U14 girls were successful in the Eden district tournament beating Kirkby Stephen, QEGS and Appleby. These victories means they have qualified for the county tournament.

They had a tough first draw having to travel to Sedbergh but played exceptionally well to win all four of their games against, Sedbergh, Dowdales, West Lakes and Austin Friars. They next faced Keswick in the semi final. After a nervous start they settled and played well throughout the court with Neve Preston linking well with Mollie Harvey, winning 5-3. This victory meant they qualified for the final, playing Sedbergh again. The girls held their own in a tough atmosphere, the defence of Freya Leather, Izzy Sanderson and Neve Preston were immense throughout.

In the end, game experience helped Sedbergh come out on top. The girls still can qualify for the North West finals which is a fantastic achievement.

Year 7 Futsal – Carlisle Sands Centre The Year 7 Futsal team entered the City Cup held at the Sands Centre.

The 8 boys selected all showed excellent close control, creativity and technique in training, making them ideal for futsal.

Futsal is a 5 aside game of football played in a small space with a weighted ball. The game is fast paced, physical and hard work.

Year 7 did extremely well with Bailey Richardson making some top saves in goals. The attack was led by Ollie Harrison, Logan Hope and Blake Crieghton, who all contributed with well taken goals. Mason Fleming and Ryan Yates provided the creative flair in the midfield, backed up by the combative defence of Isaac Cutting and Kai Robson Peart.

The boys played three games against Richard Rose Central winning 2-1, two games against Caldew drawing 1-1 and lost to eventual winner Trinity 3-0. The boys played incredibly well and should be very proud of the start they have made at UCC.

Year 10 Girls Football – The Cup runners!

The U15 girls football team are having a fantastic final season and are still in the county cup and English schools tournament.

Having played Appleby in the first round of the county cup, they have progressed to the semi finals where they face Dallam school.

They’re a new opponent for the girls, it should be a great contest.

There have been stand out performances from Bethany Harrison, who is new to the squad and Charlotte Gardener who has shown a brilliant work ethic in central midfield.

Year 7 Girls Football The U12 girls football team played in their first tournament (5 aside) in

Carlisle. It was a great experience for all girls involved with Annabelle Haughen and Penny Henderson both playing some great football.

The girls have fixtures in the new year, which they’re training hard for. New players of all abilities are welcome to the training on a Monday lunchtime.
