Joan Maxine Washington – Simmons My dear sister I remember: • That alto voice (Trio tones). • Visits Friday night. • Helping mother fix clothes for the Dorcas Society. • Being the first pianist for FAITH. • Going to Sabbath School helping mom Pearle set up the flannel board for our primary class. • Coming home in the wee hours of the morning having helped some Pathfinder and their family that needed guidance. You were the very best leader (Golden Eagle Pathfinder Club.) You flew in the rarified air where only eagles fly. I miss you sis! But I’m being faithful and waiting for that “Great getting up morning,” when you shed that “Pathfinder” uniform and come up in newness of life and salute the “King of Kings” and we will be together again, home at last! Your waiting brother, “Rags” ꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮ Many have a family member that they think the world. That they feel truly impacted life. But none can compare to you. You transformed an entire City and touched the lives of so many within. Your grandkids miss you so much it hurts. But if anyone deserves their rest, in the hopes to meet God again, it’s you. Love you Grandma, Josh (Grandson #3) ꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮ Not a day goes by that your “shadow” does not think of you. Whether it’s something funny you said or wise advice you gave me. I still see you prayers in my life today. Although our together here was cut short, the impact you had on my life will last forever. Until we meet again, Love always, your little girl. Your Granddaughter, Joshau ꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮ Still Loved. Still missed. Always in our hearts. Continuing your legacy. Your Daughter and Son-In-Law, Sherrill ”Sugie” and Lester ꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮꙮ

We think about you always, we talk about you still. You have never been forgotten and you never will. 2

Hello Faith family, Grace and peace be multiplied unto everyone of you through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I count it a privilege and pleasure to congratulate Faith SDA Church on 75 glorious years of earnest, Christ-centered ministry. All the honor, the glory, and the praise belong to our gracious God! Since it’s inception, Faith SDA Church has made an indelible impression on the lives of countless individuals in Greater Hartford, North America and the world! Our church was founded on the pillars of personal evangelism, public evangelism, and community outreach. By God’s grace we have prioritized the essential elements of prayer, worship, and obedience to the word of God. We continue to nurture and prepare our youth for a life of world-changing service through Christian education and vibrant youth ministries. We have embraced the principles of intergenerational ministry, seeking to serve the needs of the aged as well as the young. We continue to support local and overseas mission projects. During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have excelled in our online presence, reaching thousands with the gospel. Our mandate remains unchanged: “Lead men and women to a saving relationship with a crucified, risen, and soon coming Savior.” The road behind us has been paved with the sweat, sacrifice, and supplications of devoted men and women in the cause of Christ. Some of these stalwarts of faith now sleep, awaiting the voice of the Life Giver. We salute all of the leaders and members on whose shoulders we currently stand. What a time to be alive! The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that life is short and fragile at best. The prophetic signs indicate that we are marching towards the Day of the Lord. With this reality squarely before us, I encourage every member to come up to the help of the Lord. Lay hold of the plow, and work for the Lord with singleness of heart. Let us devote our time, talents, influence and finances to our God-given mission. Let us do our best to bring our families and loved ones with us as we journey to the Kingdom. Let us be of one mind. Scripture assures us that those who endure to the end will receive a crown of life. Jesus is coming soon. Let us press forward in His strength and in His power. And, “May all who come behind us find us faithful. May the light of our devotion light their way. May the footprints that we leave lead them to believe, and the lives we live inspire them to obey. Oh, may All who come behind us find us faithful. Maranatha!

Dear Faith family, It has been an absolute pleasure and honor prayerfully leading, coordinating and marking this momentous event with a select, hardworking and committed Team. The creativity, discussion and unity were truly spiritled as we all recognized the will of God for the 75th Anniversary Worship services for His glory alone. While “Faith” was the watchword of the Church since its inception, it was no surprise that the name “Faith Seventh Day Adventist Church” was chosen at a subsequent organizational meeting. We still have not fully realized the impact of the name to our families, community and loved ones. However, we do know that “Faith” has brought us this far. The theme “From Faith to Faith: The Message, The Mission, The Movement, The Memories”, guided us in all our planning. We met virtually weekly, emailed, texted and even face-timed. We respected each other’s perspective and opinion to first present to the Lord, and then the Church our ideas, to culminate a weekend of services in honor of Faith’s 75th Anniversary. The Message: Go ye therefore and preach the Gospel. The Mission: Preaching and Teaching of the Three Angel’s Message in the Hartford County. The Movement: Establish a Church to minister in the Hartford County. The Memories: We have nothing to fear, lest we forget the way the Lord has led us. Remembering and recording the times of organizing, ministering and fellowshipping in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As we pause to celebrate this major milestone that God has blessed us with, we know that the work is not finished. There are even newer memories to be made and more souls to be won before we reach our Heavenly goal. We are Faith; where prayers ascend, blessings descend, healing takes place and love and fellowship abide.

Joan Maxine Washington–Simmons Joan Maxine WashingtonSimmons was born on May 19, 1943 in East Lyme, Connecticut. She was the daughter of the late Emma Louise Bell and Elder Mathew James Bell, founder of The Hartford Church (as documented in the Seventh-Day Adventist Encyclopedia Commentary Reference Services Volume 10: “The Hartford Church was started by Matthew Bell.”) Joan and her brother, Reginal (Pastor Reginal Wayne Washington), were the first two children in the newly formed Hartford Church, and they were raised to be devout Seventh Day Adventist Christians.

tenure. These included: Pathfinder Club of the Year, Best Drum Corp, Best Drill Team, Best Camporee Club, and Best Color Guard. Ms. Joanie also recognized and celebrated diversity and inclusion within the Golden Eagles Pathfinder Club. She coordinated the purchase of flags of several countries which are proudly displayed at every Pathfinder event at Faith SDA Church.

She was the creator and coordinator of The Rose Coronation, a program designed to promote spiritual guidance, educational excellence, respectability, and life skills for our young adults in high school, who were about to transition to tertiary educational institutions. Numerous students learned invaluable lessons and benefited through academic scholarships, and the exposure, and the recognition they received during these events. Joan earned her Licensed Practical Nurse certification in 1970. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services from New Hampshire University and held professional development certificates in leadership, youth counseling, child development and pastoral counseling. She worked as a Child Development Specialist at the City of Hartford's Burgdorf Health Clinic for over 30 year. Joan was an excellent writer and orator, who used her gifts and talents on many occasions at Faith, where presentations, interviews, and public speaking were required. She has written and cataloged several manuals, particularly for the Northeastern Conference Youth Ministries Department.

Joan (who, over time, became affectionately known as “Ms. Joanie”), was an active, lifelong member of Faith Seventh Day Adventist church. Her entire life at Faith was dedicated to service. At eight years old, she started piano lessons and soon became the pianist for weekly services for over 50 years. Joan was also the devoted and loving mother of four beautiful children: Sherrill Primus (Lester), Benjamin Simmons, Jr. (Victoria), Deborah Robinson (Alvin, Jr.), and Bryan Simmons (Cynthia). Additionally, she enjoyed spending time with each of her 15 grandchildren. Ms. Joanie was an outstanding member and exemplary leader in the Pathfinder Organization. In her role as Master Guide, consultant, organizer, and trainer, she mentored and influenced numerous children, youths, and young adults - both members of the church, and non-members. Her spiritual counsel, and words of encouragement were never judgmental; they were supportive and addressed every need with the prayerful guidance and direction of Jesus Christ. Ms. Joanie held several leadership positions within the Pathfinder Organization. Most notably, she was the New England South Area Coordinator, the Northeastern Conference (NEC) Pathfinder Federation's Assistant to the President, and the annual presenter at NEC's youth leadership conference.

But above all else, “Miss Joanie” will always be remembered for her kindness and compassion which knew no boundaries. She epitomized what it means to be a Christian and to dedicate one's life to service and sacrificing for others. Her Goal: Heaven Her Motto: A Servant to God and a Friend to Man. Joan Maxine Washington-Simmons (“Ms. Joanie”, “Sister Joanie”, “Director Simmons” and “Sis”) was an integral part of all aspects of Faith's journey – the message, the mission, the movement and the memories. On the 75th Anniversary of the Faith Seventh Day Adventist Church, we celebrate the memories and legacy of Ms. Joanie and dedicate this journal in her honor.

The Golden Eagle Pathfinder (GEP) Club evolved and grew under Ms. Joanie's leadership and for many years, was the largest club in the Northeastern Conference. The GEP club received many awards and accolades during her

Jeffery E. Holmes Jeffery (Jeff) Holmes, son of Martha and John Holmes, Jr. was born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut. He was educated in the Hartford Public School system and consistently achieved the honor roll for every marking period. Jeff attributes his academic success to his mother who encouraged him to achieve the highest standards in everything he pursued. Jeff earned an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Capital Community College and a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Psychology from the University of Hartford. Growing up in Connecticut had its challenges but during these years, Jeff learned valuable lessons of faith, endurance and perseverance from his mother and aunt (Cora Flowers) which contributed immensely to his success. He recalls attending Faith Church on Cornwall Street, as a child. He was a member of the children’s choir which was directed by his cousin, Grace Flowers. It was Grace who would later ignite his passion for gospel music and encourage his musical gifts which would eventually launch his leadership in the church's music ministry. Jeff was a member of the Golden Eagle Pathfinder Club. He was invested in each class, from Friends through to Master Guide. He also served as an assistant director and counselor to the mighty Osprey’s. Jeff played the tenor drum in the Drum Corp, under the leadership of Densil Neufville. He enjoyed many years of camping trips, and even after leaving the club, he would sometimes return to assist with preparation of the camp site and overall administration of Pathfinder activities. Jeff ascribes the growth and stability of his faith, and the success of his personal and music ministries to the influential guidance and leadership of Pastors Reginal Washington, Sr., Michael Bernard, Moses Harvil, Dr. Jonathan Thompson, Dr. Keith Bolton, Dr. Walton H. Rose, Sr., and Dr. Stephen L. Williams Sr. These men of God imparted immeasurable wisdom and heightened his awareness on the importance of service to God and mankind. There were also several exemplary mentors including, Daniel Fider, Daniel Rose, Walter James, and the late Joan Simmons and Clifford Sharp, who taught him lessons in true leadership

and the importance of service. “I never would have imagined the huge impact Ms. Joanie would have on my life. The direction, care, time, training, encouragement, and patience she invested in me, helped to mold the person and leader I am today” Jeff remarked. The thread of music ministry which was developed and deeply honed at Faith, has been intertwined in Jeff’s life for more than four decades. He admired and learned from past leaders such as Tonya Legg, Audrey Lawrence, Denise Morales-Richardson, Linda Anderson, Wayne Dixon, Grace Flowers, Marian Blake, Tyrone Leggett, Kitson Richardson, the late Helen Reed, Michael Jackson, Winston Smith and Desiree Legg-Dowdell. These great leaders inspired and stimulated him to consistently use his musical gifts to serve God and give his best whenever called upon. It was as a result of these influences at Faith that Genesis Choir was formed on December 14, 1990. The choir grew to 104 members, ranging in age from four years to over fifty years old. As the choir continued to grow, a children's choir emerged. For many years, the choir traveled and performed throughout New England, Chicago, Illinois, Savannah, Georgia and at least five times every year in Canada. Jeff testifies of the wonderful times the choir has had over the years, ministering and glorifying God to many audiences large and small, and today, after 30+ years, by the Grace of God, Genesis continues to sing God’s praises to people everywhere. Jeff relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, and his impact on the gospel community as a singer, choir director and music ministry leader has grown tremendously. He serves as a choir director and Assistant Minister of Music at West End SDA Church. He is the choir director for One Accord Community Church, Covenant Church, and the Georgia Cosmopolitan Fellowship of Churches. Jeff has also achieved entrepreneurial success, is renowned in the Gospel Music industry and has been afforded the opportunity to continually grow and expand his talents and influences in many ways. In summary Jeff says “I decided to answer God’s call and haven’t regretted a moment. I am honored and humbled to be considered and recognized during the 75thAnniversary celebration of the church that gave birth to my ministry. I’m excited to see what God has in store for the next season of my life. It all began at FAITH!”

Neville B. Lendor Pastor Neville B. Lendor was born and raised in Bronx, New York. He is the first of three children born to Daniel and Jacintha Lendor; his family hails from the beautiful island of St. Lucia. Neville attended Herbert H. Lehman College where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with a Minor in Music. He also graduated from Atlantic Union College where he obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Theology; then matriculated to Andrews University and received a Masters of Divinity degree. Pastor Lendor received his first pastoral assignment with the Northeastern Conference to serve as the associate pastor at the Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hartford, CT. While in Hartford, he was the chaplain of the Hartford Area School. An experienced counselor, Pastor Lendor not only taught Bible classes at the school but he also mentored the students and youth from the church. Pastor Lendor initiated basketball and volleyball open-gym evenings at the Hartford Area School where students and young men from the community could have a safe-haven from the danger of the urban streets, if only for a few hours. Through the simple vehicle of a basketball court, relaxation and exercise would turn into unconventional prayer meetings as non-church goers would make requests for prayer and then just weeks later, testify that God answered their requests. Following his premiere pastoral assignment in the New England South territory of the Northeastern Conference, in 2011 he was asked to Pastor the Beacon Light Tabernacle and Newburgh Tabernacle churches in the Hudson Valley-Capital City area. After five years of service in the Hudson Valley-Capital City area, he was asked to be the Pastor of the Amazing Grace and Voice of Hope Churches in the East New York and Brownsville areas of Brooklyn. In 2014, September 28th to be exact, Pastor Lendor had the honor of hanging up his jersey of single-hood and married the beautiful, intelligent, creative, supportive and spiritual woman, JeNean Lendor, who most recently served as the Assistant to the President for Communications for the Northeastern Conference. Continuing forward in ministry, Pastor Lendor has been called to pastor the City Temple SDA Church in Detroit, Michigan in Lake Region Conference. JeNean Lendor has been recently elected Communication Director for Lake Region Conference. Pastor Lendor strongly believes that no child should ever be left behind and realizes that without the generosity of others, he would not have received the educational blessings he is able to benefit from today. A deep desire of Pastor and Mrs. Lendor is to be able to assist students who are in need. They believe that education should not be put on hold because of dollars and cents. A life well-lived is one that is lived as a life of service. It is the desire of Pastor Lendor to do justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with God day by day.

O U R H I S T O RY Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and the fourth largest city after the coastal cities of Bridgeport, New Haven and Stamford. Founded in 1637, Hartford is among the oldest cities in the United States. It is the home of the nation's oldest public art museum, The Wadsworth Atheneum; the oldest publicly funded park, Bushnell Park; the oldest continuously published newspaper, The Hartford Courant; the second oldest secondary school, Hartford Public; the home of Trinity College, an elite private liberal arts college and the home of literary greats Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain. Hartford is also the home to significant events in Adventism. The first and fourth Sabbath Conferences were held in nearby Rocky Hill, CT in 1848, the first Sabbath keeping Adventist periodical, The Present Truth was launched in 1849 and on July 28,1849, James Edson White, second son of James and Ellen White was born. He would later spread the Advent Message to Blacks in the South via the boat, The Morning Star. Hartford was also the first home of the Headquarters of the Southern New England Conference of S.D.A.

'Good News'. People were eager to hear, and soon a very small group began to meet in Sis. Crawford’s living room to study the Scriptures together. She was determined to plant the seeds of the gospel to those in the community. Sis. Crawford became a recruiter and was very persistent as she cried out to those in Springfield, MA and New Haven, CT to lend a helping hand. They were very supportive, especially Elder and Sis. Drayton from New Haven, and Bro. Pete Nixon from Springfield, who became a valued co-laborer. Sis. Crawford and Bro. Nixon played leading roles in a series of Bible classes and a branch Sabbath School which took place in the Hartford’s Northend, among the Black population - the number of believers increased to about 10. This group however was not too long lived. Subsequently, those who formerly had been members of the Hartford Church on Washington St. renewed their membership there until the early part of 1946.

group of believers continued to spread the Advent message throughout the city and their numbers increased. They, accordingly, with the approval of Elder Pike of the Hartford Church found a hall and began to meet together as a branch Sabbath School once more. After sufficient growth was noted and maintained, counseling with Conference officials and area overseer Pastor Norman McLeod of Springfield, MA determined that the Hartford group was ready to be formed into a company. These thirteen believers formed the nucleus for this company: Bros. Matthew Bell, Henry Humphreys, Leonard Pinnock, Charles Gains, James and Joshua Tramel, Sisters Maude Crawford, Phyllis Pearle, Susan Raymond, Flossie Humphreys, Florence Riley, Delma Crooms and Gertrude Mosley.

This group remained steadfast and determined and would soon add Mardra and Lucille Milner (who were baptized in the sister church on Washington Street) to the group. Sis. Crawford also sowed the seeds of Adventist education within her family as she enrolled her two children, Marjorie Crawford Johnson and George W. Crawford into the Seventh-day Adventist School in Hartford. On Sabbath afternoon, Sept.21, 1946, Elder L.O. Irons, Secretary-Treasury of the Northeastern Conference preached as inspiring message on the organization of God’s church. Elder James J. North, Department Secretary brought words of good cheer and hope. The spiritual welfare of the group was placed in the hands of Pastor McLeod and Bro. Bell as first elder and they became a full-fledged compa-

ny. Bro. Bell believed that in order for one to properly embrace the Seventh-day Adventist message, he/she must be thoroughly indoctrinated with all questions answered using the Bible, Spirit of Prophesy texts and the Church Manual. It was rare that a person would be baptized in less than one year. However, when studies were completed, candidates were able to expound on any Biblical subject (i.e. the 2300 Days, the Mark of the Beast, etc.) and were comfortable, competent, and confident in articulating their faith and beliefs. This lead to the creation of a strong spiritual, knowledge based faith that formed a strong foundation for the future. The group worshipped in rented facilities on Bellevue St., W. Avon St. and Main St. and continued to grow in faith and size. On February 19, 1955 with great joy, Northeastern Conference officials conferred upon the company the official status of CHURCH! As FAITH had been the watchword of this church from its inception, it was not surprising that the name FAITH SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH was chosen at a subsequent meeting. By God’s grace, Faith continued to grow and after much sacrifice and prayer the dedicated members built and then moved into their own church home at 79 Vineland Terrace in 1958. Continued prayer, blessings, progress and growth allowed Faith to purchase and move to a new church home at 25 Cornwall St. in 1970 and in 1977 Faith moved to its current location at 500 Woodland St. As indicated through this brief journey through the history of the Faith Church, it is evident that God has continued to lead His people and His church. We must never forget the sacrifice, commitment, vision and legacy of our founders, leaders and members whose efforts have empowered and motivated the church of today to continue to proclaim God’s message to a dying world. For 75 years, through 21 pastors, 2 daughter churches, and the thousands who have passed through the portals of Faith, to God be the glory!

CHURCH PLANTING Hope Seventh-day Adventist Church School auditorium was filled with more than 150 people attending Sabbath School, over 400 people for Divine Service and approximately 355 people for the Adventist Youth Society (AYS) program. The AYS program presented an original play entitled, “How Gentle is the Rain” written by Judy Martinez (Glascow), one of the newest converts. Since its inception, the members of Hope Mission have prayed, fasted and labored in preparation for the undertaking the responsibilities of a church that understands it’s mission of evangelizing the world. Sabbath August 23, 1980 was the beginning of what we have now come to realize was an inspirational dream and a God-directed endeavor. On that special day under the Better Living Crusade tent, at the corner of Barbour and Charlotte Streets, the idea of Hope Seventh-day Mission was born.

On September 16-17, 1983, Hope was organized as a Church. The late Dr. Jonathan Thompson, Pastor of the Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church, wrote: “To our newly organized congregation, inspired to express their conviction in the church name, I would exhort: Keep your hope anchored to that day when the Lord of Harvest shall come forth with a sickle in the one hand, and a scepter in the other.”

At 4:30 p.m., Pastor Raymond Saunders invited the newly baptized members to meet and consider the possibility of forming a new mission. Officers present at the organization included, Evangelist David Willis, Patricia Langley, Daniel Fider, Charles Seawright and Evangelist Raymond Saunders. A motion was made by Gladstone Fisher, and seconded by Willie Dowdell, Jr., that the new mission be Hope Seventh-day Adventist Mission. The new officers included: Noel Small (Elder), Diana Whitehead (Clerk), Willie Dowdell, Jr. (Head Deacon), Elsie Cody (Head Deaconess), Kim Harriott (Treasurer), Joyce Small (Sabbath School Superintendent), Jackie DeBeatham (Choir Director), Paula Wright (Head Usher). Hope as a mission begun with 72 members at the John C. Clark School Auditorium.

We will always be grateful to our Mother Church, Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church, for its continued support, and congratulate you on the awesome milestone of 75 years of ministry and service to the Hartford Community.

On April 16, 1983, Hope Mission had a momentous Community Guest Day Service with Evangelist Raymond Saunders as the guest speaker. The 50

CHURCH PLANTING Charity Seventh-day Adventist Church seven months, Charity maintained its evangelistic fervor and continued to grow. Although the Elders did an outstanding job, there were those among the membership who clamored for what they termed “Fresh Bread”. On August 4, 1990, Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists responded by sending “Fresh Bread” in the person of Pastor Selwyn Walters. Under his leadership and through his evangelistic efforts, Charity moved rapidly to the day of its organization. On March 16, 1991 Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church voted to establish “Charity Mission” as “Charity Seventh-day Adventist Church”.

In the Summer of 1988, Evangelist Doctor Smith of the Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, ran a successful evangelistic campaign in the Hartford/Bloomfield areas. When the campaign ended, it became evident to Pastor Reginal Washington and the members of the Faith Seventh -day Adventist Church, that a new church was needed in a different area of the community.

The Conference provided a date of organization which was May 4, 1991. And Now Abideth FAITH,

At a subsequent business meeting, Faith Seventhday Adventist Church voted to begin a new mission. Established members of Faith, along with those baptized from the campaign, were asked to be part of the new congregation. With 48 members responding to the call on September 17, Charity Mission became a reality. Pastor Weems, then Area Coordinator for Literature Evangelists, participated in the campaign and was asked to be the spiritual leader of the new mission. Due to Pastor Weems’ spiritual mindedness and his dedication to winning souls, Charity became a successful evangelistic force in the community. His motto was “Church is not over until you have spent an hour in the field”.

HOPE

& CHARITY!

We will be forever grateful to our Mother Church, Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church for continued support and congratulate you on the awesome milestone of 75 years of ministry and service to the Hartford Community.

In January 1990, Pastor Weems moved on and the leadership of Charity fell to the shoulders of Elder Douglas Kerr and other local lders. For the next 51

MISSION PLANTING Vine Street Ministry Mary M. Perry to come along with us and we met and prayed with more residents than we could amply serve and minster to on the street. It was then that we approached the owner of an empty lot on Vine Street and asked his permission to use his property for our services, and he very graciously said yes.

After carefully observing and recognizing additional needs of residents in the community, we prayerfully approached a clothing wholesale outlet in West Hartford that donated truckloads of new clothing for our residents. So, every week, we met with an increasing number of residents in the lot on Vine Street, prayed and studied with them, and also distributed healthy foods, clothing, books, and other pieces of literature. Eventually, we also set up Health Stations to teach and promote a healthy lifestyle

The Vine Street Ministry began in 2016 under the leadership of Pastor James Yansen, Jr. This ministry started with weekly Sabbath afternoon Prayer Walks where Elders and church members were assigned to particular inner city streets in the North End of Hartford.

Elder Orville Falconer was very helpful with teaching the Sabbath School lessons, and we continued Bible studies using the Amazing Facts and Bible Answers series. By God's grace, eleven souls were baptized.

Elder Helen Nixon was assigned to Vine Street along with Bro. Earl Patrick, a recently baptized member from Faith's Soup Kitchen. During that first Prayer Walk, Bro. Patrick and I met and prayed with many residents and also handed out sandwiches. The following week, we asked Sis.

As the weather changed and it got colder, we were able to secure space in a Seniors facility at 51 Vine Street. This ministry remains active and thriving today. To God Be the Glory! Helen Nixon

MISSION PLANTING Inner City Ministry Our first Inner-city Dept Ministry, began under the leadership of Pastor Reginal Washington with Helen Nixon being the leader. The Inner-city Ministry-- collaborate with Faith-based, Community and Public/Private organizations to advance these entities commitment to the basic needs and wellness of the community, residents and businesses in the surrounding areas.

Our church also sponsored political debates prior to elections for many candidates for federal, state and local officials.. Through this ministry, the Faith Church also, adopted the Hartford Police Dept and the local Fire House to visit and provide donations to our officers and fire fighters on their birthday and on special occasions.

Also, on special occasions our officers were invited to worship with our church and were recognized for their extinguish services. This ministry has enabled our Public Safety Servants, and community to have a better relationship

The Inner-city ministry attempts to addressed some of the barriers that prevents residents access to services, quality employment, and adequate involvement in community revitalization due to being grossly impacted by racially ethnic, geographical injustice and disparities. This ministry connected our church with many politicians such as the Governors, Mayors, U.S. and State Senators and Representatives, and local city reps. Our church administered Voter's Registration Drives educating and registering our members and the community to vote.

Soup Kitchen Ministry The soup kichen started in 1989 under the leadership of Pastor Washington with Helen Nixon as the Coordinator. The program operated weekly every Sun. 12:30pm -1:30 pm , serving approx. 200-300 participants hot vegetarian meals. The program was designed to allow varies community organizations , private entities and Faith Based organizations to participate with serving as well as providing their resources to ease the burden on Faith Church. The participants with no eligibility requirements were interviewed and provided information and referral services as needed for Health ,Education, Employment and Housing. Bible Studies were also given and a few souls were baptized.. Currently, due to the Pandemic The Soup Kitchen is operating serving sandwiches as needed in varies areas. To God Be The Glory… Great things he has Done... 53

ADVENTIST EDUCATION Adventist Education At faith Isaiah 54:13 declares, " And all Thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. This scripture is both a directive and promise that formulates a crucial component of the Seventh-day Adventist philosophy of Education. This directive was fulfilled before the existence of the Faith S.D.A Church as Hartford's first Black Adventist, Maude Crawford enrolled her daughter Marjorie Johnson Ross in the Hartford Seventh-day Adventist School in the 1930's and 1940's.

In the subsequent years, following the establishment of the Faith SDA Church, Adventist education remained an integral part of the total church program- children of the Faith Church attended the Whitney St. School sponsored by the Prospect Avenue SDA Church. When the Prospect Avenue SDA Church relocated to South Windsor, CT in the late 1970's, Faith continued to support Adventist education with the enrollment of many of its children to the Connecticut Valley SDA School. During the tenure of Pastor Jonathan and Paula Thompson, the vision of Adventist Christian education at the Faith Church became a reality with the organization of the Nurture Nest Day Care Center in 1980, and the establishment of the Faith SDA School in 1982. In 1994, the Faith SDA School became a constituent, or area school known as the Hartford Area School and in 2019 became the Hartford Adventist Academy

SCHOOL PLANTING Nurture Nest Learning Center

Church Schools are never progressive and will never

Governance of the Center was always the responsibility of the Church Board. Appropriate appointment of Board Chair, Board Members and Business Manager was key to the success of the operations. Volunteering by Church Members was crucial to the success of church operated day cares and schools in general. Whenever the spirit of volunteering dwindled, failure in delivery and operations followed in quick order.

The name Nurture Nest Learning Center was first suggested by Mrs. Paula Thompson the wife of the then Pastor of Faith Church. As would be expected there were many suggestions but the name Nurture Nest found a lodgement in the educational development plans the church had in mind. The goal was to: provide a safe and Christian environment for day care age children to nurture and grow our children to become worthwhile members of society become a feeder for the Faith School which was soon to be opened

Somewhere between 1999 and 2003 increased State Regulations and apparent lack of adequate planning led to the decline of the operations at NNLC. The original vision was lost and in 2003 they were forced to merge the operations of the Day Care with the Elementary School.

grow without the support of their local church administration and the church members. There are always key personnel who will take the lead in the establishment of a church entity and often stand out as pioneers in that regard. The establishment and operation of the Nurture Nest Learning Center (NNLC) have been no different.

Many individuals used NNLC as a bridge to other careers and to provide short term financial support for their families. Some of these individuals would have had difficulty in obtaining employment somewhere else, but found a way to merge their mission of service with the goals of the church. They are better off for having done so. Many students too benefitted from short term summer employment and still have fond memories of their first paid employment.

NNLC officially opened in 1980 with five children and before long grew to as much as 105 students. In 1981 the Center was fully licensed and recognized by the State of Connecticut. Parents were attracted to the Center due in part to the wholesome Christian atmosphere, dedicated and loyal teachers and trusted caregivers. Nurture Nest practised a good mix of Christian values and attitudes and parents were comfortable and satisfied with what they were offered. One of the major challenges faced by the Center was operating after sunset on Fridays during the winter months. The change to early pick-up on Fridays proved inconvenient to many parents and some of them reluctantly withdrew their children because of this change.

The Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church will forever be grateful to the Directors, Teachers, School Boards, Church Members and Parents for their support in ensuring that the Nurture Nest Learning Center provided a Christian start in the educational journey of many who have gone on to be successful and productive in society. Current church administration and church membership would do well to be reminded that education and redemption are one. Our mission is to save and serve and our vision should always be focused on making Christian Adventist Education available for all our members.

Between 1980 and 2003 NNLC benefitted from the expertise and dedication of Directors, among them were: Mrs. Paula Thompson, Miss Sylvia Stanley, Mrs. Harriet Douglas, Mrs. Phyllis Nembhard, Mrs. Kim Minott, Mrs. Odella Thompson and Mrs. Margaret Answer.

THE MEMORIES Sylvia Stanley Dummett Nurture Nest Director from 1985-1990

Adrian French McClain Nurture Nest Director 1983-1985

Nurture Nest Preschool located at 25 Cornwall Street provided a haven for the Upper Blue Hills Area. Its charm send sent forth the sound of children's laughter that as cars would past by they could imagine a secluded place of safety and love for their small baby.

I remember Nurture Nest. I remember the beautiful grounds. I remember the playground and the huge oak trees. I remember the long, curving, walkway that led to the front door. I remember sitting on a small toddler‘s chair on that walkway, watching the children play.

When they walked in the building the comfort of trees and the soft breeze of wind the blew gave their imagination of a nest rocking on the tree protecting their baby.

I remember the large open area inside the building where learning took place. I remember hearing the children’s voices, chairs and toys moving. I remember hearing the teachers teach, their admonitions and instructions mingled with laughter and joy. I remember how we would clear those petitions out of the way and put down chairs and have programs on special evenings. I remember the Christmas programs and the graduations. The entire building would be transformed into almost a theater. I remember the stage and watching the children walk across it and receive their little diplomas.

We had 5 classroom with God fearing teachers that had the love of Christ in them ready to provide the a Christcentered educational program. There were two Three-year old class rooms and. Large Four-year Old Room. A nest within the nest was were the 18 month old's and another room for 2 year old's. Kindness, compassion and Love were the order of the day. I will never forget how the Sounds of songs of Christ and the laughter of children enjoying their day. The children hated to go home because Jesus was there.

I remember Miss Rhonda and Miss Rachel. I remember Mrs. Hermena Fider. I remember Miss Alice. And even though I cannot remember the name of the lovely Jamaican woman who cooked our food, I will never forget those lunches. I will never forget how those children had lunches equivalent to an elaborate Sabbath afternoon lunch every day. I remember the vegetarian turkey, the smothered choplets, the macaroni and cheese.

Auntie Kim Nurture Nest Director: 2002-2004

I remember the intelligent, hard-working members of the Nurture Next school board. I remember their kindness and solicitude. And I will never forget how Nurture Nest was so integral to our church community. Everyone stopped by. The daycare was like a church community hub. I got to know and love everyone. I made lifelong friends at Nurture Nest learning center. Yes, I remember Nurture Nest and I always will

Nurture Nest is the best! This is the slogan that our three and four-year-old's repeated at the greatest child development center in Hartford. Our children continued to learn about Jesus and His love for them. Academia actively reflected God's word as found in in Matthew 6:33; "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you." What things did God add through the ministry of Nurture Nest? Homes and families evolved to a higher level as a result of informed parenting and home care. Children displayed evidence of physical and educational growth and parents felt a sense of pride in their child's achievement. Seeds of the Holy Spirit, implanted years ago grew and continue to grow today as our children are now adults who still remember who God is and the importance of service. Why? Because Nurture Nest was the best! 57

SCHOOL PLANTING Hartford Adventist Academy The Hartford Adventist Academy School Board, Administration, Faculty and Staff are all excited to help celebrate a remarkable milestone in the establishment and sustenance of a great Godly Institution; Faith Seventh-Day Adventist Church, for seventy five years. This is an extraordinary accomplishment which could have only been done through the leadership of men and women who first submitted themselves to the Almighty.

The true education that means more than the pursual of a certain course of study has been modeled and taught in this institution over the four decades of its existence. The young people brought here to “The Jesus School” as one boy called HAA, have received preparation for the life that now is and is to come. The Educators in our Institution believe and facilitate educating the whole being; physical, mental and spiritual. This is so because Adventist Educators partner with Christ, The Master Teacher, to instill a lifelong passion for learning that encapsulates the whole period of existence possible to man. Hence the youngsters who have walked the corridors of our School, in the Church or the new building, have matriculated through different educational systems. After leaving HAA, they have done well in life because of the educational foundation obtained here at the Hartford Adventist Academy. We have truly stuck to the scripts of the “Schools of the Prophets.” Although great emphasis has been placed on Religious Education in our School, it has not been to the detriment of the Sciences and Literary Attainments, even though we value character building above earthly values.

Any church that is established to bring honor and glory to mankind, will quickly lose its true focus and become like the chaff in the wind. This is not the case in the Faith Seventh-Day Adventist Church as members and Pastors have worked untiringly to evangelize and assist in the winning of many souls. Beyond that the Faith SDA Church has given “birth” to two churches Hope & Charity and one school the Hartford Adventist Academy, formerly known as the Faith SDA Church School and Hartford Area SDA School.

The existence of the Hartford Adventist Academy, a K-8 School is not only credited to the pioneers who built it, but also the teachers, principals, staff, school board members and supporters who toiled to maintain enrollment, raised funds, conducted programs, and spent sleepless nights to bring plans to fruition. All those have gone before us, on whose shoulders we now stand, we must say a big “Thank You”. To the Constituency comprised of Faith, Hope, and Charity Members we say Thanks for your constant contribution and support. To the School Leaders who tirelessly stood at the helm of this Educational Ship of Zion, we say Thank You. These Leaders who occupied the school in the church and the current school building are; Mrs. Deborah Richardson (Founder), Dr. Glen Cassimy, Dr. Althea Cordner, Mr. Mark Levy, Ms. Evelyn Savory, Mrs. Danette Walcott, Dr. Daniel Amfo, Mr. Hance Philippe and currently serving Mr. Grafton B. Jones.

The school, over the 39 years of existence, has morphed from a one-teacher school with nine students, to a robust enrollment of 150 students at one time. Today, after the erection of the present building since 1999, the school has continued to receive students from the Hartford communities and surrounding towns, sometimes as far West as Torrington. The only closure of the school was for a season from March to August of 2020 due to the Governor's mandate to close all schools due to the pandemic. The Lord indeed built this school. Those who co-labored with Him and sacrificed to bring it into existence did not do so in vain because the Lord sanctioned its erection, moved on the hearts of the people to give of their talents and financial gain no matter how small, so God’s Educational goals could become their commission.

Again we say:

Congratulations Faith on your 75th Anniversary!

75 years of service to God, church planting and service to the community is an awesome privilege. That is part of what Faith Seventh-Day Adventist Church has achieved. The Pastor, Officers and Members of Charity S.D.A. Church heartily congratulate Faith for the Christ-centered ministry that you have provided over these many years. God’s richest blessings on Pastor Dr. Nicardo Delahaye, the Officers, and Members of Faith S.D.A. Church. Many more years of service in God’s cause.

Pastor James Madden and your Charity Church family

Happy 75th Anniversary Faith Church, your presence in the City of Hartford for 75 years is worth celebrating . The fact that your presence has been felt, gives cause for a glorious celebration in heavenly places. Let us work eagerly and diligently to one day (soon) view those recorded scenes. Sister Carita & Pastor Michael Bernard

Congratulations Faith Church on your Diamond Anniversary Celebrations You have been more than just a church. You have been a beacon of light to those who entered and worshipped in your doors by providing solace and refuge and by meeting the needs of the community you serve. You provided training and leadership for the hundreds of young people who were blessed with the opportunity to be associated with you. These young men and women learned service from you and they have gone on to take their places in the community and in the world.

Thank you for being “the church by the side of the road where the race of men goes by“ as you have become a friend to men and women as they traversed the busy streets surrounding you. Congratulations and let us work together to complete the Mission of taking the gospel to all the world.

Faith Family on our 75th Anniversary God is surely not finished with us yet. Great things await those who remain true and faithful to the Lord.

By God Grace, we look forward to many more years of spiritual growth and development under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The race is not for the swift, nor the battle for the strong, but to him who endures until the end.

Your beauty should not come from your outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. The Board of Deaconesses 71

Congratulations Faith! As we, celebrates75years of existence, The Golden Eagle Pathfinders & staff are proud to be just a small part of this awesome set of believers. As a club, we have come a mighty long way. We have experienced many great stalwarts on whose shoulders we stand today as a faithful and grateful club. We pledge by the grace of God to continue in grooming young people to carry on this legacy. We will continue to strive for the master’s kingdom, taking nothing for granted. Like the words of Paul in Hebrews 10:23 “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for He is faithful that promised)”, we march with purpose and determination endeavoring to be A Servant of God and a Friend to Man.

If You Praise Him, You Will See Him I eagerly looked forward to teaching this week’s especially our youth learned that Faith is more youth Sabbath School lesson. Inspired by a God idea, this lesson was to be very different. Pictures, markers, paper and other ideas were ready. After preliminaries, we discussed advertising techniques, strategies and the rationale used to sell various products. The students were then assigned to create an ad that would positively advertise Jesus or a positive Christian lifestyle choice. Expectations and time constraints were discussed and the students eagerly began their assignments. At the appointed time, the students completed their ads and shared them with the class. However, one student, Stephen Boyd continued to work long past the given time, and was the very last to present. His ad was absolutely stunning. All marveled at the concept and detail of his drawing. It was as if Stephen had visualized the scene and drew what he saw. Stephen’s ad portrayed the heavenly, holy city of New Jerusalem with a lone angel standing on a wall. The caption read, “If you praise Him, you will see Him.” Stephen’s ad impressed us all and imprinted itself upon our minds and hearts as we reflected upon it throughout the day.

that our church’s name but a necessary principle we must possess and live by. We also learned that trust in God, sharing, and praise are powerful antidotes for pain and sorrow and that God is always near, specifically during tough times. Our experience then encourages us now to lovingly remind today’s youth that evidences of God’s love and care surround us and must not be drowned out by cell phones or social media. God and our relationship with Him should be our highest priority. We must daily read and study about Him, praise and talk to Him in prayer and worship weekly with our church family.

Although the members of Stephen’s Sabbath School class are now adults, most of whom have moved away, married or are now parents themselves, and Faith Church has changed, Stephen and his drawing still occupies a special place in our hearts and memories. His ad reminds us of God’s ultimate plan and place where we will never part again and ever dwell in His presence. We’ll see Stephen again as well as others whose lives have praised God in thought, word and deed. Therefore for a new generation of Faith, On the following Tuesday, our church was devastated by the heart-breaking news that Ste- especially our youth, Stephen’s words are bephen had died suddenly at school. By the grace queathed to you, “If you praise Him, you will see Him!” By Deborah Richardson of God, Stephen’s ad was found and became a source of hope as well as a rallying cry for our church, particularly for our youth. A support meeting was provided and even the Youth Sabbath School lesson for the next week concerned trusting God in times of trouble. God’s presence was felt individually and collectively during those days of grief and pain. Our church,

Stephen Balfour-Boyd
