Representative Kim Schofield hit the ground running when she took office this January, serving District 63 – SE Atlanta, College Park, Forest Park, East Point and Hapeville – sponsoring bills to address gun violence, students living in poverty, and health-related measures including harmful chemicals in consumer products, and more. Representative Scott’s dedication and activism to increasing quality health care, affordable housing, and equity in education helps the citizens in her district and throughout the state. She is well-known for her partnerships with community and civic organizations in the metro area that work on helping marginalized people get a fair chance at economic stability and growth. Known as a progressive voice for change, Representative Schofield is building a reputation for generating results in the State Legislature.
During 15 years of service to the residents of Henry and Clayton counties in District 76, Representative Sandra Scott has championed bills to improve the health, justice, and financial opportunity for her constituents. Her actions have reflected the quote she lists as a favorite: “If I can just help one person a day then, my living will not be in vain."
She serves on the Defense & Veterans Affairs; Human Relations & Aging; Science and Technology; Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment; and Special Rules committees. Bills she recently sponsored relate to mitigating the consequences of the abortion ban; public assistance funds for diapers and hygiene products; Medicaid coverage; and gun violence. Deszirae Jones set her sights on being a high achiever when she entered 9th grade at Booker T. Washington Early College High School. She heard about the Urban League’s Project Ready program and didn’t hesitate to join. By senior year, Deszirae had surpassed her original goals. By graduation she had earned 21 transferable college credits from Clark Atlanta University and maintained a ranking in the top 10% of her senior class. Moreover, she received 60+ college acceptances and more than $1.8 million in academic scholarship offers. Deszirae is heading to North Carolina A&T University in Fall 2023 to major in Business Administration. Her next goal -- to become a business owner and fashion stylist. We have no doubt she will reach it!
The Multi-Agency Alliance for Children, Inc., referred Jaden to the League in January 2023. He entered our program with a determination to rise above a troubled childhood home environment and a period of teen incarceration. Shortly after his release, Jaden was struck by a car heading to work. He suffered head trauma, fractured ribs, and remained in a coma for months. After that, he decided the only direction for him was “up.” Jaden earned his GED
Adult Education program and completed job preparedness courses. In Spring of 2023, he earned his forklift certification from Atlanta Technical College and is pursuing his Commercial Driver’s License for a career in Transportation and Logistics. If Jaden puts his mind to it, he will succeed!
Ananda grew up in Mississippi, attending schools that left her feeling unprepared for the job market. She moved to Atlanta and found a job at a fast-food spot where conditions were harsh with no upward mobility. Soon one of her cousins referred her to the League’s YouthBuild Construction Plus (YBC+) program. At first, the poor preparation she’d had in high school made her question her ability to keep up. But Ananda says program mentors helped her stay on track and walked her through completing eligibility documents. Ananda entered the WellStar Health System program and now proudly holds a Certificate of Recognition for perfect attendance and participation and is a Certified Nursing Assistant. We believe Ananda has the resolve to become the best at whatever she strives to accomplish.
When Abdur came to the League as a teenager, he had already been through a rough time. He’d been in temporary foster care as a child but was sent back home where ongoing upheaval affected his performance at school. He dropped out but didn’t give up. Abdur enrolled in the League’s “At Promise – At Work” program, and gained employability, communications, and job skills. He also felt free to let his positive attitude shine. Abdur learned that operating with integrity is appreciated, expected, and rewarded. Equipped with new skills, Abdur got a job in the food service industry as a cook and server and earned a quick raise from $14 an hour to $17 an hour. Adbur is preparing to enroll in college to study business with hopes of starting his own clothing brand in the near future. He has been a model student and a great example for his peers.
