The opening of hotels on 17th May, twinned with a boom in pandemic pet purchases has resulted in a 420% uplift in online searches for ‘dog friendly holidays’.

According to data from Bob Martin, one of the UK’s oldest pet-care brands, the findings suggest holidaymakers will be making the most of the Great British Summer with their furry friends in tow this year. Ahead of the influx, Bob Martin is warning dog-owners about cleaning up after their dogs, in an attempt to keep the UK’s unspoilt holiday destinations unsoiled.

With the uncertainty of Government guidelines around international travel, coupled with a rise in new dog owners as over one quarter of Brits purchased a puppy in lockdown, Google Trend data shows a 1,183% increase in the search term ‘staycation’ from April 2020 compared to April 2021.

What’s more, the search term ‘holidays in the UK 2021’ has increased by 650% in the past 12 months, while the search for ‘package holidays’ decreased by 52% (April 20 vs. April 21). According to further research, 50% of Brits will be looking to holiday a little closer to home for the second summer running.

“Millennials perhaps wouldn’t have usually considered a staycation. But, as evidence shows, the majority of the UK will be flocking to nearby beaches and the countryside in large numbers this year, more so than ever before.

“Dog owners need to make sure they’re being responsible on their getaways this summer, especially new dog owners who may not have travelled with their pet before, to protect the scenery for other holiday-goers and local residents.

Always make sure you carry an adequate amount of poo bags on you, wherever your trip may take you, and always make sure you pick it up and dispose of it properly in the bins provided.

Will our love of UK staycations continue post pandemic?

With abroad holidays looking to be making a comeback after a long-awaited period of uncertainty due to Covid-19, the travel industry is about to undergo another huge change. Suddenly, the options and choices will be greater, and those dreaming of lazing by the pool in their favourite destinations won’t have to settle for just dreams anymore. However, as a nation, we’ve enjoyed making the most of ‘staycations’ and exploring more of what we have on our doorstep. Many local holiday companies have been able to offer us Brits wonderful breaks to spend time with our loved ones and create holiday memories just as we would’ve done abroad a couple of years ago. But what do we think the future of UK staycations might look like once the world is our oyster once again?

Google Trends shows that eases in the lockdown (from March 2020) have welcomed spikes or noticeable growth in staycation searches, and terms such as ‘holiday to Spain’ (our most popular abroad destination), not showing the same areas of growth. This is also true of ‘holiday to France’ and ‘holiday to Italy’. This essentially backs up what we already know – that more people have been looking to holiday in UK during eases in lockdown restrictions, because they can.

One thing to consider, however, is that UK staycations were in fact rising in popularity on their own, even before the pandemic. Data collected by holiday insurance company Schofields demonstrates that the “share of people

taking holidays exclusively within the UK in 2019 was 8% higher than those who take holidays exclusively abroad” . With this in mind, it will be interesting to see how UK staycations shape up once we’re back to normality – will this trend in popularity continue to increase over the coming years?

In order to get some first-hand insight, we’ve spoken to Chris Jeffrey, experienced Park Director at Cofton Holidays in Devon, to see how his holiday park has fared when it comes to lockdown easing, and what he thinks about holidaymakers and their appetite for globe-trotting (or not) might be like over the coming months.

How is Cofton Holidays as a business reacting to the lockdown measures easing?

Well this is our third time so seems a little easier. We have opened the areas of the business that we are allowed to, we have our covid measures in place and many of the actions have been around re-training. From a marketing perspective our results for the next three months are looking really good, so we have been slowing down some of the paid advertising and concentrating on some of the areas that have capacity still.

Have you noticed any recent booking trends from UK holidaymakers?

‘We have noticed a trend in people travelling within our postcode area and we think this is because there are no flights going to other popular holiday destinations. It’s likely that people don’t feel the urge to travel long distances, but we also recognise the quality of the facilities which we believe is an attraction to our guests.

Do you think everyone will rush back to popular spots abroad once the borders are fully open?

Not everyone, from what we have observed many people are still hesitant in visiting us, so no doubt there will be a strong feeling about going abroad, especially if the news is showing other countries with Covid

issues, it’s going to make people think about their holiday money and the risk with travelling during a pandemic. We have to remember that the UK is a front runner with the vaccine roll out and many countries are significantly behind, however there are people that are more risk averse than others so it’s not a question of ‘everyone’.

Do you think UK holidays will hold a bigger value to people moving forward? For example, with the added benefits of being able to take pets and get more for their money?

No, this is a short-sighted approach for any vendor. We are still seeing vacancies in some of our quieter times, it’s the school holidays that may be affected by market rates and this will be driven by the big providers that use dynamic pricing.

What are your thoughts around the appetite for holidays abroad moving forward? Global warming is making the summers hotter, do we need to head somewhere else to get the glorious sunshine we crave?

I think it’s important that we show the UK as a holiday destination and give people a great experience and good value. There are so many self-catering opportunities in the UK and not so many ‘all-inclusive style’ venues. The UK

has something completely unique and people’s desire for freedom and space will really assist our cause.

What do you think the future of UK staycations will look like once we’re fully out of lockdown?

I think the future of UK staycations was starting an upward trend ahead of Covid-19 – the reality is there is an inherent increase in demand now due to the International Travel Restrictions.

I believe for those that have done their research on UK staycations will be more aware of the opportunities that exist and will likely want to experience different parts of the UK and new and interesting styles of accommodation. Holidays are about the change of scenery and not just sitting by the pool after all.

Recipe corner One pan sausage-meatball roast with British asparagus and new potatoes An easy one pot dish that pairs seasonal superstars British asparagus and new potatoes with easy sausage meatballs and juicy vine tomatoes.

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes You’ll need: 1kg small new potatoes 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp dried oregano 8 thick pork sausages 400g cherry vine tomatoes 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 bunches British asparagus, trimmed and cut in half salt and freshly ground black pepper What to do: Preheat the oven to 180°C fan.

Using a sharp knife, make a series of thin slices (about 2mm apart) all along the new potatoes, cutting down about three quarters of the way through so the potatoes stay intact at the base. Add to a large roasting tin and drizzle over the olive oil, sprinkle on the oregano and season with salt and pepper. Toss about to evenly coat. Roast for 10 minutes.

Cut each sausage into 4, peeling away and discarding the skins as you go.

Remove the potatoes from the oven, scatter around the sausage pieces and slide back into the oven for another 15 minutes.

Remove the roasting tin from the oven once more, scatter over the tomatoes and the garlic and toss to coat, turning

the potatoes so they are all cut side up.

Slide back into the oven and roast for another 10 minutes. Finally, add the asparagus to the tin, tossing to coat and

roast for 5 more minutes.

Remove from the oven and serve straight away.

Shallot, potato and sausage hash with a fried egg This tasty brunch dish is sure to be a hit with the whole family

Serves: 4 Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes You’ll need: 500g potatoes, peeled and cubed 2tbsp olive oil 200g round shallots, peeled and quartered 6 good quality sausages 1 tsp chilli flakes A small handful flat leaf parsley Salt and pepper Eggs, we like Clarence Court A knob of butter Ketchup and mustard

What to do: Parboil the potatoes until they are almost cooked through, drain and set to one side.

While the potatoes are cooking, heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the shallots until they start to soften. Squeeze the sausages out of their skins and make them into little sausage balls. Add them to the hot pan, cook for a few

minutes then add the potatoes and cook everything together until golden and crispy, you may need a little more oil.

Sprinkle over the chilli flakes and parsley and season. Keep warm while you fry the eggs in a little butter.

Serve the eggs on top of the hash, with mustard and ketchup on the side.

Try before you buy

f you’re looking to buy a holiday lodge this year and want to be in it quickly, then the perfect place to look for that is at a park which offers both short breaks AND lodge ownership.

They bought their own lodge on the park and loved it so much that they then decided on buying a second as an investment lodge. Penally and Tenby – where life’s a beach!

P

enally Grange has two particularly great beaches within walking distance; Penally and Tenby. Tenby is probably the most iconic seaside town in Wales, rivalling places like Mevagissey and Polperro for quaintness and charm. It was awarded a Silver award for the best UK coastal resort at the British Travel awards in 2016, as voted for by the public.

Through the ages The original town of Tenby was called Dinbych y Pysgod in Welsh or “little town of fishes”. It was established by The Normans as a fortified town. Most of the old town walls remain, enclosing the medieval town behind them. The castle that defended Tenby was built on Castle Hill but only one small keep tower remains of that. Inside the old

town walls, narrow cobbled streets and medieval houses add to Tenby’s charm.

During Georgian and Victorian times, Tenby became a popular seaside resort.

The promenades on both sides of the old town on the Esplanade and the Norton both contribute to the outstanding architectural look of the town.

You’re spoilt for choice in Tenby. You won’t find chain restaurants but what you will find is quality places to eat whatever your budget.

The South Beach bar and bistro is a new contemporary restaurant right on the beach or Top Joe’s pizzeria in Upper Frog Street, which was named the second best pizzeria in the UK by tripadvisor.

Tenby boasts two great golf courses, a championship links course at Tenby Golf Club and a parkland course at Trefloyne Manor.

For all action head to Battlefield LIVE! in Llanteg, 8 miles east. Think paintballing without the bruises, they use state of the art lasers!

Tenby Watersports have kayaks and motor boats for hire or you can go on a Jet Ski safari or try a range of sit-on rides like a Donut, Banana or an inflatable sofa!

Mackerel fishing trips and wildlife spotting trips can be booked at the harbour.

Marion Davies, a knowledgeable local tourist guide offers a range of ghost and guided walks. Great fun!

Penally beach

Tenby north beach and harbour harbour is from The Norton, a road that runs along the cliff top above North Beach. You can find several good hotels here.

The Victorian seaside development on the west side of town, outside the town walls, was fairly limited so doesn’t detract from the general ambience of the town. The imposing hotels along The Esplanade look over Tenby’s South

Beach towards Caldey Island.

The centre of Tenby is a maze of narrow little streets. The roads are pedestrianised during the day in summer when the bars and restaurants set up al fresco seating. There are plenty of interesting and quirky shops. Tenby was designated as a conservation area by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in 1972.

At the far end of Tenby south beach is Penally Beach. It’s more of an extension of South Beach than a separate bay, but it does have a completely different character. This part of the beach is made up of a sand and shingle beach, backed by dunes, protected from the wind by the headland of Giltar Point. You can walk across the dunes from Penally station to get there, although this path can be closed as it crosses a rifle range. It also crosses Tenby Golf Club so if you’re a golfer you’ll be happy with that, but as you walk past you may want to keep a lookout for wayward shots! If you’re planning to take this route, check out the tide times to make sure you’ve plenty of beach to play on and that you don’t get cut off by the incoming tide.

REVEALED: The UK’s top campsite locations ranked

HITTING THE TOP SPOT Dorset campsite Higher Moor Farm has been rated as the top campsite in the UK, new research has revealed.

New research from leading motorhome rental company, Camptoo, has ranked the 10 top camping hotspots in the UK, with Higher Moor Farm in Dorset taking the top spot.

It also proved to be the most Instagrammable campsite on the list with by far the most social media posts, tagged 943 times by users on the social media site.

Dorset campsite rated the best in the UK COUNTY BY COUNTY The 10 most popular camping regions in the country were selected based on the number of campsites in the area, with the top individual site for each region then singled out based on the online popularity (judged by Instagram posts and TripAdvisor reviews).

Average climate conditions (annual sun hours and rainfall) were measured, along with the number of nearby hiking routes, the quality of air in the area and nearby landmarks to visit to give an ultimate overall score of the top 10 campsites in the UK.

HISTORIC SPOT Herding Hill campsite in Northumberland took second place on the list, boasting the most landmarks nearby compared with the rest of the list.

Northumberland and New Forest campsites ranked second and third POPULAR PICKS As expected, popular camping locations made up the top five with Long Meadow (New Forest), Deepdale (Norfolk) and Mains Farm (Lake District) ranking third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Campsites in Norfolk and Lake District complete the top five HIKING HEAVEN Mains Farm, located in the UK’s largest national park, was found to have by far the most hiking trails close by, with a huge 631 to choose from although the Lakes do have the second-highest average annual rainfall in the list.

Mr Langmaid also outlined his intention to give away around 200 free holidays this year to NHS workers and others who helped Britain keep going during the Covid crisis.

“It was fantastic that our two guests were able to visit us during English Tourism Week, and to see Mother Ivey’s giving families the holidays they need and deserve.”

English Tourism Week shines a spotlight on England’s tourism sector, and the huge annual contribution made by tourism to the UK economy.

He said that similar plans for last November were frustrated by the lockdown – but that the park would be offering many more free stays this year than originally earmarked.

“Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our whole site team has done a magnificent job during some very challenging times,” said Mr Langmaid.

Mr Langmaid said that staff and guests were delighted that Mother Ivey’s had bounced back after more than a year of lockdowns, and was once again buzzing with activity.

The £40,000 cost, said Mr Langmaid, was just a small token of Mother Ivey’s gratitude for the dedication and bravery shown by those on the front line of community care.

But, he told Mr Mann, the park was intentionally operating below capacity for safety reasons, and had closed entirely its camping field for a second year to reduce pressure on site facilities and help safeguard the local community.

“This has been a very challenging fourteen months for Cornwall’s hospitality industry, and many other businesses which rely on visitor spending have also suffered,” Mr Mann said.

MP Scott Mann flew the flag for Cornwall tourism recently when he paid a visit to Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park in Padstow as part of English Tourism Week.

Mr Mann, who is MP for North Cornwall, was accompanied by chief executive of Visit Cornwall Malcom Bell – and they were both welcomed by park owner Patrick Langmaid.

During their tour of the grounds and its private beach, Mr Mann and Mr Bell heard about the raft of changes made to the park during the months it had been closed.

“Now, but with a cautious approach, we can reopen our tourism industry once again and provide the fantastic guest experiences for which Cornwall is world famous,” he added.

World Exclusive T-Rex Exhibition To Open in the UK The first real Tyrannosaurus rex to be exhibited in England for over a century will arrive in the country this summer.

The skeleton of Titus, discovered in the Montana Badlands in 2018, will be revealed for the first time at the Wollaton Hall Natural History Museum in Nottingham, the focus of a new exhibition set to explore his life and environment.

Opening on Sunday 4th July 2021 and running until August 2022, the exhibition, Titus: T. rex is King, has been specially designed around the T. rex, himself, with digital and interactive virtual media displays that will immerse visitors in his extraordinary journey from discovery in the Montana Badlands in the USA, through the experience of excavation, curation, examination, rebuild and final reveal. The exhibition, taking over some 4,000 square feet, explores the legend of the T. rex and is also set to dispel some myths about this immense iconic dinosaur – that lived over 66 million years ago.

Arts Council England provided the initial funding of £250,000 to secure the exhibition for Nottingham and the UK, allowing Wollaton Hall Natural History Museum in Nottingham to assemble a

unique, expert team of palaeontologists, conservationists, and digital display specialists to tell the story of Titus, and his world.

Dr David Hone, the Senior Lecturer in Zoology at Queen Mary, University of London in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, internationally renowned palaeontologist and part of the exhibition development team tasked with bringing Titus to life, said: “Visitors will be able to explore the world of Titus and take a closer look at his particular features – his crushing bite, incredible eyesight and keen sense of smell, airfilled bones, weight, size and speed. And then look more closely at his make-up of muscle and tissue, with 3D scans of his bones to examine and handle – and try to decide if in fact he was covered in scales or feathers or both. Titis is an incredibly well-preserved specimen with important and unique pathologies that advance the science of palaeontology and our understanding of these iconic dinosaurs.”

In 1951, the Festival of Britain commissioned a series of short guides they dubbed ‘handbooks for the explorer’.
