Dear Grand Night Friends, WHEW! Twenty five years! I can’t believe it! We are so happy you have come to celebrate this milestone with us. I am reminded tonight of how we began all those years ago.

It’s a Grand Night for Singing! was an idea I conceived during the summer of 1993 as a way of giving talented young performers from the University of Kentucky an opportunity to display their enormous talents and to present some of the great music of Broadway. I asked my friend and colleague Jim Rodgers to join me in developing a concept, and before we knew what was happening, Grand Night was a hit.

The first year we presented the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. We expected a small audience of friends and supporters. To our amazement we had to hold the house for twenty minutes while the ticket office tried to serve more than 400 walk-up ticket buyers. By the middle of the first act, I knew we would need an encore, but we had none prepared. So during intermission we took the cast into the rehearsal hall and pulled one together. The performers and audience were elated.

Twenty-five years later the jubilation continues! Grand Night has performed to packed houses every year. And you, the audience, have become regulars. Welcome back! Your devotion to UK Opera Theatre and your support through the years have allowed the university, the city of Lexington, and the surrounding areas of Kentucky to experience this very special arts event. The arts are a big part of why people move here, why people want to stay here, and why people want to raise a family here. The arts set Lexington apart from other communities of our size.

As many of you have heard me say, producing shows of this quality is not inexpensive.

We have big dreams for the UK Opera program. As you may know, the Richard Tucker Foundation of New York has recognized UK Opera Theatre as one of the top recommended programs in the country for opera training. Our mission is to be the BEST Young Artist Vocal Program in the country. Embrace this dream with us and help support our program. The Tom Getchell Scholarship Fund for Opera Students: a Lasting Legacy During his all too brief tenure as a Board member and incoming President of the Lexington Opera Society 2011-2013 (currently known as OperaLex), Dr. Tom Getchell encouraged the opera board to establish a fund for scholarships for graduate students in the UK Opera Theatre program. When he learned from UK Opera Theatre’s Executive Director, Everett McCorvey, that the doctoral students who entered UKOT with full scholarships were funded only for three years and that many of them were forced to interrupt their studies in their fourth and final year to seek outside employment, Tom suggested that the scholarship funds be dedicated to assisting these students to complete their final year of the degree program. In 2013, the Opera Society raised more than $14,000 for UK Opera Theatre scholarships at its annual fundraising event, ‘Prelude to It’s a Grand Night for Singing’. The Board of Directors voted unanimously to create the Tom Getchell Scholarship Fund with these funds.

UK Opera Theatre doctoral students must meet four criteria to quality for Getchell Scholarship funds:

(1) Completion in a timely fashion of course requirements and

qualifying exams for the doctoral degree (DMA)

(2) Financial need and the amount of funding received to date

(3) Maintenance of a 3.0 Grade Point Average; and

(4) Good citizenship (collegiality and participation in

UK School of Music activities).

These criteria were developed by the UK Vocal Music faculty and approved by the Lexington Opera Society (OperaLex) Board of Directors.

Four UK Opera Theatre graduate students were selected by the Vocal Music faculty to receive Getchell Scholarship funds in December 2013. All have DMA Degrees. As of this writing, twenty two students have received Getchell Funding resulting in 13 degrees in the last four years. The other recipients are working to complete their degrees within the next year.

OperaLex continues to raise funds for this very worthwhile purpose.

Dear Grand Night for Singing Guests, Thank you for joining us in this grand celebration of a grand season of musical storytelling. The stars of UK Opera Theatre (UKOT) are also celebrating 25 years of this annual extravaganza. OperaLex is proud to support and be a part of the efforts of these remarkable young artists.

OperaLex is a 501(c)(3) organization of local volunteers whose mission is to spread the love of musical theatre and opera in Central Kentucky.

We provide financial support to UKOT to help defray production costs and assist its students through scholarships. We sponsor the Kentucky District Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions here in Lexington and host a fascinating lecture series (Opera 101), taught by Dr. Tedrin Blair Lindsay.

We support SOOP (Schmidt Opera Outreach Program) as it brings opera to elementary and middle schools throughout the Commonwealth.

OperaLex also supports the Tom Getchell Scholarship program for student singers nearing the completion of their degrees. There have been 22 recipients of Getchell scholarships over the last four years. All have either achieved their degrees or are on schedule to do so next year. It’s a program that transforms the lives of young artists.

CREATIVE TEAM BIOS

EVERETT MCCORVEY (Executive Producer), a native of Montgomery, Alabama, received his degrees from the University of Alabama. He is the producer and executive director of UK Opera Theatre and Artistic Director for The National Chorale in New York City.

He and Dr. James Rodgers started the Grand Night tradition 25 years ago.

Director of The LEXington Theatre Company. A native of Lexington, she is a graduate of Oklahoma City University. This is her 8th year with Grand Night.

JEROMY SMITH (Choreographer) is an Oklahoma native and a graduate of Oklahoma City University. He performed in several National Tours and acclaimed regional theatres, and worked for many years with the Broadway General Management firm Richards/Climan, Inc. Jeromy is the Producing Director of The LEXington Theatre Company. This is his 7th year with Grand Night.

PEGGY STAMPS (Stage Director) is the owner of The SquarePeg Group, Inc., an artist development and management agency. Ms. Stamps has clients performing on Broadway as well as in regional theatres, on international cruise lines, and in film and opera houses across the globe.

Peggy is a native of Michigan. This is her 24th year with Grand Night.

TEDRIN BLAIR LINDSAY (Arranger/ Assistant Musical Director) is a pianist and musicologist raised in Rome, Italy, who has been a professional accompanist since the age of ten.

Tedrin serves as vocal coach, musical director, and musicologist on the faculty of UK Opera Theatre. This is his 19th year with Grand Night.

ROBERT BALDWIN (Conductor) is conducting his 17th year of It’s a Grand Night for Singing!

Dr. Baldwin is Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras at the University of Utah and Music Director for the Salt Lake Symphony. He is originally from Colorado. He loves returning to Lexington each June and considers it a highlight of his year.

NAN MCSWAIN (Associate Musical Director) is Vocal Coach/ Lecturer on UK Opera Theatre’s faculty. She has been affiliated with UKOT since 1990.

She received her BM and MM degrees in piano performance from UK and Specialist Degree in Vocal Coaching/ Collaborative Piano from the University of Michigan. Nan is from Owensboro, KY and this is her 23rd Grand Night.

LYNDY FRANKLIN SMITH (Choreographer) performed on Broadway in The Little Mermaid and the revival of A Chorus Line, as well as three seasons in the Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular and numerous tours/ regional credits. Lyndy is Artistic 27

JOHNIE DEAN (Orchestrator / Arranger) worked in church music administration for more than thirty years, as well as teaching at the college / university level for twenty years. At present Dr. Dean is an administrator at Midway University and is the Assistant Conductor of the Lexington Singers. He is from Danville, KY. This is his 16th year with Grand Night.

TANYA HARPER (Lighting Designer) has designed UK Opera Theatre productions for more than twenty years.

Ms. Harper is the production director at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center for the Arts and works with many other groups in the area as a freelance lighting designer and production stage manager. She grew up in Owings Mills, Maryland, and this is her 21st Grand Night.

ROBERT PICKERING (Set Designer) has been part of the Grand Night production team for fifteen years. Bob is from Sacramento and currently lives in Chico, CA, teaching technical theatre and scenic design at Butte College.

SUSAN DUDLEY WIGGLESWORTH (Costume Designer) is in her tenth season as costume designer for UK Opera Theatre and Grand Night.

She began her career in the theatre as an actress and made her professional debut at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage at the age of twelve. Susan is from Rockville, Maryland.

ROBERT SEEBACHER (Assistant Conductor), originally from Pittsburgh, is the Music Director and Conductor of the Johnson City (TN) Symphony Orchestra and the Mobile (AL) Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is the Director of Orchestra and Conductor of opera at the University of South Alabama. This is his 12th year with Grand Night.

MARC SCHLACKMAN (Director of Production) began his Broadway stage managing career in 1978. Since then he has worked with some of the brightest stars in the business. Marc is from Brooklyn, New York. This is his 14th year with Grand Night.
