THE DEAN

“We understand that working in academe, particularly in a faculty role, can be isolating and ambiguous. Thus, we are intentional about creating a structure that honors and supports the whole employee – personally, professionally, and otherwise.”

GREETINGS!

Thank you for your interest in joining the College of Social Work (CoSW) at the University of Kentucky!

For over 85 years, CoSW has been a leader in higher education. Our mission is clear: Through rigorous research, excellence in instruction, and steadfast service, the CoSW works to improve the human condition. Always, in all ways.

Make no mistake, people are central to actualizing our mission. As such, CoSW strives to foster an employment culture predicated on consistent faculty/staff development, intentional investment in supportive infrastructure, and rigorous assessment of employment-related initiatives. This overarching aim and associated principles of creativity, consistency, and collegiality influence every decision we make about our College.

We also recognize the need for life-balance. We understand that working in academe, particularly in a faculty role, can be isolating and ambiguous. Thus, we are intentional about creating a structure that honors and supports the whole employee – personally, professionally, and otherwise. Our Faculty and Staff Self-Care Initiative is but one example of that intentionality.

I, as Dean, recognize employment searches can provoke anxiety and stress. Current societal contexts can exacerbate those feelings. If you have any questions about employment in CoSW, I would be happy to connect with you. Please feel free to email me at Justin.Miller1@uky.edu (with copy to Xana. Plum@uky.edu).

Be well, J. Jay Miller

Dean and Dorothy A. Miller

Below you will find but a few examples of the resources availed to our researchers.

The Office of the VPR provides resources for all researchers on campus, including mechanisms for:

Finding internal and external funding

Identifying collaborators

Building and submitting proposals

Managing awards

Complying with regulations

Protecting and commercializing inventions

Internal Research Support Programs

The VPR hosts a series of workshops on various topics designed to help faculty accelerate their research activities. As well, there are an array of Faculty Support Grant Programs:

University Research Professors

CURATE Research Support Program

Multidisciplinary Value Program (MVP)

Igniting Research Collaborations (IRC)

Conference & Workshop Grants

Complex Research Grants

Equipment Maintenance Program

John P. Wyatt, M.D., Traveling Fellowship

UKinSPIRE (Seeding Partnerships for International Research Engagement)

Additional VPR programs include:

Emerging Themes for Research Programs

The Emerging Themes for Research Program supports multidisciplinary teams engaged in emerging research that creates, grows, and sustains a healthier, wealthier, and wiser Kentucky.

Research Scholars Program (RSP)

RSP is an investment in the research success of junior faculty and their mentors that seeks to provide professional development curricula; provide mentorship, sponsorship, and coaching to embed the cohort in research environments committed to inclusive excellence, collegiality and productivity; and establish a networking structure.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs

These fellowship programs, the Lyman T. Johnson Postdoctoral Fellowship and the University Research Postdoctoral Fellowship, have a primary goal of creating a pipeline of qualified candidates with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences and plans for research that will extend the reach of the ideals of community and belonging in their field of study.

Equipment Competition

Equipment Competitions are offered periodically to fund purchases that enhance multidiscplinary research and expand the research infrastructure at UK.

C o SW INCENTIVE PROGRAMS

To align with VPR priorities, CoSW offers faculty a host of incentive-based programs associated with research activities. Here are but a few:

RESEARCH INCENTIVE PROPOSAL POOL (RIPP) is an initiative designed to recognize the effort that goes into writing a research proposal for extramural funding. To that end, each FY, the Office of the Dean allocates a funding award pool for PIs who submit extramural research proposals. These funding awards are distributed at the end of each fiscal year.

THE COSW WETHINGTON AWARD PROGRAM incentivizes activities linked to CoSW’s efforts to advance meaningful research. This program provides up to $50,000 to researchers for an array of research activities, including proposal submissions, generated salary savings, completion of commercialization processes (e.g., patents, licensing, etc.), publications, and other research-related activities.

PROPOSAL SUPPORT ACCELERATOR PROGRAM provides faculty with expert support in research development and grant writing. Faculty receive customized proposal review, revision, and production support, while also receiving feedback to help align strategic priorities to funding trends and opportunities across the grants landscape.
