Regional AHEC Spotlight Southern

The AHEC spotlight features interviews with regional coordinators from across Kentucky to help inform preceptors of AHEC services in their communities

What is AHEC?

The University of Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program is a collaborative effort with the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville Health Science Center and eight regional centers to positively affect the distribution of health professionals throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky The eight regional centers, or AHECs, are strategically located throughout the state In short, AHEC works to support, train, recruit and retain the best health professionals in Kentucky

Interview with

Sherry Spragens, R.T. (R), ARDMS (A)

Southern KY AHEC

sspragens@soahec.org

Tell us a little about yourself and your background in healthcare education.

I have 41 years of healthcare experience working as an X-ray and Ultrasound Technologist and still continue to work PRN as a Technologist in addition to my current role with AHEC. I am married and I have one son who is an artist and lives in Chicago.

What resources/services are available for preceptors in the Southern AHEC region?

The Southern KY AHEC provides continuing education (CE) programs for healthcare providers, some which are free! Online CE programs can be found at: https://sokyahec thinkific com/

The Southern KY AHEC includes: Boyle, Casey, Estill, Garrard, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Lincoln, McCreary, Madison, Mercer, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Wayne, and Whitley counties.

How long have you worked for AHEC?

I have been the coordinator for Southern AHEC for 6 years. Before that I was a health educator for AHEC which means I planned health career summer camps and spoke with middle and high school students on why healthcare is the best career!

Are there opportunities for pharmacy preceptors to engage with the collaborative efforts of the regional AHEC?

Yes!Preceptorsinterestedinlecturing/speakingfor our CE programs can contact Anna Jones (ajones@soahec.org)toseewhattopicsarecurrently needed.
