GURDAS MAAN CELEBRATING 30 YEARS Picture this if you will: It’s a remote village in India’s northwest; Giddarbaha to be precise. A quintessentially young Punjabi boy roams the village lanes that run through the lush green fields of his beloved homeland. The clanging of bells clipped on to farmers’ cattle and the melodious echoes from the keenly perched koels all play their part in shaping this young boy’s life. But he... well, he continues walking whatever path destiny has lain. “Yes, I pen poetry and sing in college festivals, but the athlete within me seems favourite. This will be my livelihood”, he assumes. But fate keeps him guessing. What a blessed innocence this is. The album touches a couple of holy shades throughout the album and delivers a unique sound.
Need we elaborate? There are only a few truly-great songs in music. But rarer are the timeless classics. This title track is one of them.
Contains two live speeches in melodic form and a typically humorous angle penned on the title track. One of the less familiar albums in the repertoire but equally as fascinating. The title track and “Wah Ni Gentlemaniye” display Gurdas Maan’s ability to write with humour yet never fail to deliver the message.
1987: Geetan Bhari Patari
A truly masterful piece of work. “Kithe Gaiyan Khedan” (“Where Are My Toys”) is a wonderful, emotionally-charged homage to the innocent days of childhood.

The title of this album is found in the fourth line of the opening stanza of “Prande”. The song remains one of Gurdas Maan’s most respected pieces of work.
Exemplifies Gurdas Maan’s ability to deliver unforced social messages with ease. Also contains the trademark Gurdas Maan song, “Kamli Yaar Di Kamli.”
Do not let the immensely popular and much talked about title track of its day be the flag-bearer of this album. “Allah Hu” amongst others are truly inspiring pieces of work.

A Hindi-laden album exemplifying Gurdas Maan’s songwriting versatility.

Multiple award-winning, global chartbuster “Apna Punjab Hove” to this day remains somewhat of an anthem for Punjabis.

Contains perhaps the most symbolic and inspiring personification of an object ever put in words; “Mitti” is a must listen.
True to his persona, the title track observes the notion that age is nothing but a number as one should remain youthful at all times. Catchy hook.

The accompanying video for the title track saw Gurdas Maan displaying his highly regarded Judo ability in one particular scene.
2001: Pyar Kar Le
The title track is another very catchy hook with repeated lines. “Tim Timaunde Taariya” is a song which contains a line that inspired other singers to base a whole song around - “ ...yaari te sardaari”
2003: Punjeeri
A comprehensive album with a versatile flavour. Contains the inspirational and often followed “Pind Diyan Galiyan.” The song has gone down as one of Gurdas Maan’s classics with a stunning video to match.
2004: Heer
Contains deep, meaningful tracks, not least in “Lakh Pardesi” where Gurdas Maan pleads, “No matter how distant from our homeland we become, never wish evil unto the land that feeds you.”
2005: Vilayatan
25 years since his first album release, Gurdas Maan’s abilities as a singer-songwriter have not faded. This album contains iconic hits such as “Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne”, “Bas Rehan De” and “Sarbans Daniya Ve.”
2008: Boot Polishan
The story behind the legendary title track was inspired from Gurdas Maan’s observations of a young boy who earned his living shining people’s boots. Security refused him an autograph which Maan then rectified. The song was born.
2011: Jogiya
The last release prior to the 2013 Tour. The title track contains a set of melodic couplets and a symbolic video to accompany the inspiring song.

ISHQ DA GIDDHA EXPLAINED When UK BOX OFFICE were in the process of planning the current tour, the title track from the album Ishq Da Giddha was seen as the perfect fit for naming the six-leg spectacle. THE STORY Over the years, Ishq Da Giddha has become a staple performance in Gurdas Maan’s live shows. For the fans that follow Maan far and beyond, Ishq Da Giddha’s performance has steadily increased in occurrence. From the stunning first rendition under the UK BOX OFFICE banner in 2005 to the previous pioneering tour in 2011, Ishq Da Giddha has formed its own space. Discussing its significance, UK BOX OFFICE Director, Ashok Suman states, “This is the song which our current tour is named after. It is a multi-dimensional song that has great changes of pace and one that truly takes on a life of its own when performed live. Gurdas Maan allows the song to dictate his performance.” The result, as Ashok Suman concedes, is powerful and the effect is overwhelming. A true, must-see, live performance. In essence, the song is faithful to the Sufiana style of expression, whereby the secular context of love is intertwined with the spiritual. Gurdas Maan, as a lyricist, invariably has a distinct Sufi touch amongst his work. Ultimately, the emotions of a Sufi song can only be evoked through the lyrics and although the term Sufi is often over used in the industry, it is correctly practiced, lyrically, by only a few. Ishq Da Giddha is a fine example. THE SONG Ishq Da Giddha translates as “A ‘dance’ of love.” Here, the ‘love’ is directed to the heavens; a Supreme being whose grace is being celebrated through the ‘giddha’. ‘Giddha’ is a very specific, celebratory dance. Its roots lie in folk traditions popular in Punjab, whereby verses are sung as a dance is performed through continuous rhythmic clapping*. Thus, the result of the song in translation is, “Giddha of Love”. The song explores the various sacrifices made by divine martyrs and the themes of free-spirited devotion are prominent throughout. As with most songs written in the Sufi style of poetry, it is that second layer, sub-text where the truth of the message lies.

THE FEMALE TOUCH BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN... They say, is a woman. However, with Gurdas Maan, this proverb goes even further. There have been numerous females; some sisters, some mothers and some forgotten souls. All of these female figures have held a recurring role throughout Gurdas Maan’s 30 years of lyrical ingenious.

Throughout the three decades, he has penned numerous songs dedicated to the sentiments surrounding the fragility of females; from recognition of mothers’ sacrifices to poignantly pointing out the depth of daughters’ despairs; be it during the emotional departure from her maternal home or the treatment she is so harshly served at her in-law’s abode.
In words... Gurdas Maan’s devil-may-care approach to the ‘commercial’ requests of the modernera does not warrant a song to be written for the sudden sake of it. He will write when the words are right. Therefore you need not scour his discography to find singles which are solely dedicated to women. Sure, you will, but what you shall also find, so unique to the man, is often a reference to women in songs, regardless of the wider context. For instance, in the rhyme-filled song Challi (Boot Polishan, 2008), he writes one stanza that pleads with the listener; “God’s work shall be disturbed, so kill not your little girl”.
Given, Gurdas Maan is the master of moving and righteously stimulating messages in his songs. In fact, almost pioneering. However, although there are other artistes who painfully try to sing the good fight in their borrowed words, one aspect of the ‘social-message’ genre of advocating female rights belongs solely to Gurdas Maan. Yes, there are various compositions out there that try to, admirably, advocate a similar theme, but that sense of ‘forced’ is instead the victor, and the message is defeated into oblivion, whereas Gurdas Maan’s lyrical campaign for the betterment of females is, quite frankly, genuine. He once reflected live on stage, “Whereas people yearn for and
For female followers of Gurdas Maan, there is a certain comfort which comes with his work. A sense of belonging, and even therapeutic treatment, is palpable for the female fan in need of a friend. At times when the pressures for various reasons of belonging to the said gender arise, the words of Gurdas Maan provide a pat on the back, “there, there” they soothe. Reflecting on the recording of “Sanu Ta Aisa Mahi” (Yaar Mera Pyar, 1997), Gurdas Maan recalls, “After completing the recording in the studio, I remember this lady, who was at the studio at the time, came up to me all teary-eyed. She said to me, ‘That song was my story. How did you know?’” It is this innate ability to connect, empathise

and share the sentiments of females that renders Gurdas Maan’s message of equality so believable. For those songs which do not shy away from fighting the good fight and are titled directly for the female population, Gurdas Maan stands unrivalled. Thus, it would be improper to explore Gurdas Maan’s ‘female-touch’ without the mention of ‘Kudiye’ (Heer, 2004). Translated as, simply, “Girl”, the line which demonstrates Gurdas Maan’s urge to put wrongs, right, is evident in the penultimate stanza; “How can I rectify the disparaging work of writers before me?” Mrs. Manjeet Maan This is the woman behind the man. A producer, director and former actress, Manjeet Maan has remained the one constant throughout these 30 years of success. “Since marrying Manjeet, I have only ever received good luck,” reveals Gurdas Maan. If ever there was a reason to theorise Gurdas Maan’s ability to write so astutely about women, she would be the root. She remains an inspirational figure to not just Gurdas Maan the songwriter, but to the wider Punjabi female fraternity. From humble beginnings, to safeguarding prominent Punjabi entertainment, she shoulders so much... She provides that female touch.
