Greetings from Head of UKA

On October 6th 2022, the 51st edition of Norway’s longest cultural festival begins. It stretches over 26 days and is arranged exclusively by student volunteers at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. During UKA i Ås 2022, 1200 volunteers will work day and night to give the students an “Orange Comeback”.

UKA has, through 98 years, been the student’s biggest highlight during a busy and stressful everyday life. This year’s UKA is no exception! This year we have 26 days full of events, parties, the UKErevy and lots, lots more! So buckle up for the festival of a lifetime!

It has now been four years since UKA has had the scale we have this year, and we are happy to return to the size we were before the pandemic. We have also had some hiccups during the planning, but now everything is ready for a fantastic UKE!

Like previous years, the UKErevy is in focus, and as the theme is “Summer” the show “Flipp, flopp, tommel opp” will serve jokes, satire, music and dance. This is something all students should watch, both once and twice.

This year it’s also the Year of the Volunteer. This means there is an extra spotlight on all of the volunteers in Norway. At UKA, everyone will have a good time. In addition, we host Tulleforestillingen (The Nonsense Show), where our volunteers will receive special attention. As a volunteer during UKA you will always have a great time. And you get the best festival experience as a volunteer!

The events for UKA 2022 have a broad variety, and it should be a festival for everyone. There are traditional events such as Sprøytetoget and Norwegian Championship in the Student Revue, and newcomers like the Sports Race. Krimlunsj (Crime Lunch), which was a success in miniUKA, will also make a comeback! Together with the UKEhjelpa project, the event group has worked hard to give everyone a choice of activity, and we hope as many as possible want to participate in this.

We haven’t spared anything when it comes to the concerts either. Among others we have booked Lars Vaular, Astrid S, Hagle, Kakkmaddafakka and not least the band that has performed here the most, Hellbillies. Together with Spritsløyfa there will be 14 party nights that are going to raise the roof! This is a small taste of what UKA i Ås 2022 can offer you. We hope everyone wants to participate in our dear festival, and that you are excited for a whole month of events, joy, excitement and parties! This is the month where memories are made for the rest of your lives! Because this is the year UKA i Ås get its comeback and return to the size the students in Ås deserves.

Practical Information

Tickets

UKA i Ås uses LinTicket for ticket sales. You can download the LinTicket-app and buy tickets there, or use linticket.no in your browser. Via LinTicket there are several payment opportunities, either with card or through Vipps. After you have bought the ticket, it will be sent to you through e-mail, and the ticket will also be available in the app under “tickets”.

The ticket prices under UKA i Ås are grouped after “Board of Festival”, “NK and Functionary” and “Ordinary”.

Collecting Wrist Bands

To avoid long lines before the party nights, it is a good idea to collect the wristbands before the evening begins. There will be a wrist band collection in the office wing, and here you can scan your ticket and trade it in for a wrist band. This way, you can get in the “fast-track”-line for the event of the evening. There will be a separate entrance for those who have collected their wrist bands in advance. Time for collecting wrist bands will be published on Facebook or Instagram by UKA.

Wheelchair

It is possible to enter the concerts at Samfunnet with a wheelchair. , but the building is unfortunately not well suited for this. We still wish to accomodate for wheelchair users at the best of our ability. In order to get to Aud.Max and Festsalen you have to use an elevator that the manager of the day has to help you use. A companion gets free entrance, and a ticket is issued at the door. If there are any questions around using a wheelchair at Samfunnet during UKA i Ås, contact uka@ukaiaas.no in advance for help.

Age Limits

There is an age limit of 18 years old on the concerts, and you must always carry a valid ID that can be shown at the door. If you are under 18 years old and want to go to a concert, you can go with a guardian. The guardian needs to be over the age of 25 and can not be influenced by alcohol. Both must show ID at the door. Some places on the house will have an age limit of 20 years old, spritsløyfa is one of these places, but the concerts will not take place here. Read more about guardians on ukaiaas.no

We have an ID-obligation both at Studentsamfunnet i Ås and during UKA i Ås. This means that everyone will be asked to show ID at the door at every event on the house.

Payment Opportunities

During UKA i ÅS, DiggiPay is the payment method. We recommend that you download the DiggiPay-app as it has a lot of useful functions, like transferring money from your bank account, payment history, and the opportunity to transfer to friends. The DiggiPay-account is easily filled using Vipps or card. The account will be linked to a physical card that is used to pay for food and drinks during the festival. DiggiPay is also used by Studentsamfunent outside of the festival, så take good care of your card!

DO’s

DO set up an account on LinTicket and download the app on your phone early. Missing the ticket sale of your favourite artist because you didn’t register sooner, sucks bad.

DO keep up with UKA i Ås on Social Media. There you’ll get all the most important messages and updates of the events.

DO volunteer at UKA as a funkis! As a funkis, you’ll make new friends, fun experiences and the opportunity to contribute to making UKA i Ås 2022 the country’s, no, the world’s, best culture festival! And if that didn’t convince you, your wallet will thank you as there’s funkis prices on tickets, food and drinks.

DO participate in everything. You’ll thank yourself when you’re sitting in the rocking chair in the nursing home and can tell your great grandchildren stories of legendary nights having fun with good friends. Remember, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” -Michael Scott.

DO try all the bars in Spritsløyfa! All the associations have worked hard on making the most fun and weird bars you can imagine. So, start on one end and make your rounds.

DO always have provisions ready for the day after. It sucks waking up to a dry mouth and empty stomach after last night’s festivities, to then not have the right cure in the shape of an ice cold Urge and a delicious frozen pizza aka Grandiosa.

The next few weeks will be filled with activities and very good vibes, so we hope these guidelines will help enough for all to still be alive when November comes knocking. A few last words of advice from us experienced fourth year students: DO enjoy yourself, DON’T do anything we wouldn’t do!

DONT’s

DON’T forget your ID! It’s regrettable being sent home by security, just to stress home to get your licence while the line grows longer and your favourite artist is entering the stage.

DON’T drink too much the day before academic events like final exams or 6 hour long labs starting at 8 am the day after. Being hungover and nauseous while smelling sour milk bacteria in a conical flask that’s been simmering for a week is NOT recommended.

DÆN’T accept too much free Europris wine from Ås Campingstol before a concert. This one requires no further explanation.

DON’T show up at Samfunnet if you’ve had too many tequila shots. Then the road is short of getting kicked out while you’re puking in the toilets. We’ve all been there, but let’s try not to this time guys.

DON’T try to sneak into Johannes’ if you’re under 20 y/o. We know it sucks to not be a part of the adults, but hopefully a cider on the kid’s table in the Bodega helps <3

DON’T send “where r u” to your crush at 1:57 am on a Saturday night while staggering home after the Hellbillies concert. It’s not very flattering and only increases the hangxiety the day after.

During the long and eventful nights at Samfunnet, it’s easy to get hungry. When the hunger hits it would be nice to be able to grab something to eat. Therefore it’s great having several different alternatives to choose from. I’ve met up with the Head Chef Vebjørn Røysland to talk about the food that is going to be served at UKA, and his role as the Head Chef.

Helene Sylvarnes

Without food and drik, even a genius can not think Writer

How did you become the Head Chef for UKA?

I actually applied for another position first, for the general assembly at UKA, but I didn’t get it. But I really love UKA and therefore wanted to contribute and because I’m a really big foodie, I applied for the position as Head Chef, and got it.

You are not alone in the kitchen during UKA. How many are you and what do you do?

There are 7-8 people in the kitchen every night. In the kitchen we make all the food, before it’s picked up and delivered to the different serving areas around the building during UKA. So, the main task is to make sure that the cooking itself runs as smoothly as possible.

As you said, there are many different serving areas during UKA. How many are there and where can they be found?

There are three serving areas around the building. These can be found inside the tent by Aud Max, in Spritsløyfa and in Johannes. The menu differs between the serving areas.

In the tent by Aud Max, regular and dirty fries will be served, among other things. In Johannes there will be a more complete menu consisting of different burgers and kebabs. In Sløyfa there will be pizza and nuggets.

Is there something for vegetarians?

Everything on the menu, except for the pizza, will have a vegetarian option.

What have you thought about while making the menu?

We’ve thought about what to serve, and also what’s most appealing when you’re out partying. We believe that we’ve been able to put together a varied selection that will satisfy people. And there will be lots of vegetables on the burgers and kebabs, even if it’s not the healthiest alternatives.

Do you have anything else to add about the food selection?

There will always be some pressure on the food that is served. Even if you might have to wait for your food, we are doing everything we can to make sure that it runs as smoothly as possible. But you have to remember that everyone that works in the kitchen both as funkis’ and NK’s are volunteers, not professionals.

People should also know that we are trying to keep the prices as low as possible, but the increasing price on groceries will unfortunately make everything a bit more expensive. Still, the food at Samfunnet is cheaper than other alternatives for a late night snack. Lastly, I want to give everyone a challenge: Try every dish on the menu!

The expectations for UKA 2022 are sky high. Finally a UKA without cohorts, designated seating and hand sanitizer. Finally a UKA with unrestricted roamingbetween groups of friends, on the dance floor and in Spritsløyfa!

UKA 2020 was incredible because we managed to arrange a successful and legal festival in Ås in the middle of a pandemic. The festival was arranged with regards to the infection prevention rules and corona restrictions, with limits on participants, distance, seating and cohorts. After a long period of endless postponing of events, digital live concerts, and a cancelled festival summer, UKA i Ås managed to light up the autumn darknes. We got concerts, we got to dance, and we finally got to see some unfamiliar faces again. We were happy that we got that UKA, and the good memories became useful in a new lockdown that came shortly afterwards.

The last real UKA i Ås was in 2018. The minority of us students in Ås have experienced UKA i Ås how it really is; how UKA is supposed to be. What is UKA when it isn’t held back by a pandemic? Have we forgotten how to arrange and participate in Norway’s longest cultural festival?

UKA i Ås is losing you friends in a packed concert in Aud Max, and finding them again later in the Bodega. And it didn’t matter that much either because in the meantime you found a new friendship in a fellow fangirl who also got lost from her group in the crowd! UKA i Ås is an intimate concert with a Norwegian artist in Halvors Hybel together with new classmates who turn out to like the same music as you. UKA i Ås is walking around and around and back and forth in Spritsløyfa, even if you have a lecture at 8 am the morning after. It ‘s a month where you know you won’t be studying as much as you should be. UKA is the longest cultural festival in Norway, and we are so lucky that it is arranged by NMBU-students here in Ås.

Experienced UKEregulars are starting to become an extinct species on Campus. It is actually 4 whole years since UKA i Ås was last hosted without any restrictions. Some of those who have experienced this lovely UKEatmosphere previously are actually still here in nooks and crannies on Campus. We spoke with them to hear what they love most about UKA.

This year, UKA i Ås has a completely jampacked program with all kinds of events. It’s time to defrost the festival body and feel the muscle memories. The time has come for an Orange Comeback! UKA is approaching at full speed, so don’t just stand there! Get ready for take-off and jump onboard, this will be an adventure!

Iselin (soon 3x UKEsurvivor)

It is difficult choosing a single best memory, especially for Iselin. After reminiscing a bit, the conclusion is that her best UKEmemory is from 2020. - I was at a pre-party with dinner and drinks with good friends. The vibe was good, and everyone was in a good mood. It was a very good concert experience, even though they were seated, she says. Iselin is really looking forward to this year’s UKA, and mostly the concerts. She looks forward to gathering friends who are in Ås and friends who will visit in connection with UKA.

Jonas (soon 3x UKEsurvivor)

Jonas’s best UKEmemory is the Brenn concert at miniUKA. - We got there with no expectations, and it turned out to be the concert of a lifetime, he says. He believes that the excitement about Corona being over contributed to lifting the mood even more. As the other now experienced UKEregulars, Jonas is also looking forward to UKA: - It’ll be the first UKA with no corona restrictions since 2018, so it will be fun to see the festival unfold in all its glory!

Gjermund (soon 3x UKEsurvivor)

Gjermund’s best UKEmemory is from his first Oktoberfest in 2018. - I still remember leaving the lecture in MATH100 and going straight to pre-party at 12 pm on a Monday, he says. After the pre-party, they went on to Aud Max, and he met an atmosphere he’d never experienced before. It was the perfect start to the party life in Ås. Gjermund is very much looking forward to UKA: - Especially now that the pandemic is coming to an end, we will again experience UKA at its very best! Personally he looks forward to the Choir Weekend and Kakkmaddafakka. -The evening with Kjartan Lauritzen and Undergrunn will also be really cool, he adds.

Signe (soon 4x UKEsurvivor)

Signe’s best memory is from her first UKA in 2016. She was in her first year and attended the UKErevy Opening Night in gala attire and drinking champagne in the Foajee with her new study friends. - And I especially remember when I experienced the legendary Sprisløyfa for the first time, she quickly adds. This year the circle will be completed on her fourth (!) and last UKA at the Ur Opening Night in the same gala dress and together with the same study friends as the first time around.

’’Behind The Scenes’’

Obviously Obvious

It’s obvious that the actors on stage need somet hing to wear, and the revy (variety show) genre often demands flashy and cool outfits. Obviously, what is conveyed in the form of lines and songs need to be heard, seen and, hopefully, be funny enough for the audience to laugh a little, or at least smile. There are so unbelievably many basic elements, small details and components that are taken for granted during a revy. And for every thing taken for granted, there is of course a bril liant person who has hammered, sewn, written, sung, scribbled or all of the above.

The UKErevy is more than just what’s on stage, even if this is what most of us pay to see. The UKErevy is the sum of the many creative proces ses and people who have spent hours behind the scene and curtain, and those in front. Especial ly,the UKErevy is a result of immense effort, revy joy and a whole bunch of trial and error.

A work in progress

Producing a student show takes time. The UKErevy 2022 took its first step into reality one day in April of 2021. Around this time the Revy Board was hired, and the ideas started floating. Shortly after, the writers were hired and they began writing the show. What will the revy be about? What themes should be brought up? Which ideas are too big and which are too small? “Nothing is off the ta ble, but it must be realistic”, the writers smile.

In a short period of time, relative to the cre ation of other such wonders, a lot needs to be in place and produced. Ideas need to be formulated, budgets are tightened, there is reading, practices, trials, hiring, solving and feeling to be done. “[The revy] is finished when the curtain is lifted at the premiere”, they say hopefully. Until then, the show is un der continuous change and improvement. Hardly anyone knows what the finished result will actually be.

Be Creative and Kill Your Baby

A lot of time is spent on trial and error. Ma king a revy is a creative process that does not alway follow a linear progression. “[One] shall not block, [one] shall accept and dare to test all ideas”, the choreographers relate. And there is a lot of truth in this.

Selma Lands ve rk, Fr ida Helstedt Håt ve it, Jo hanne F r o s t K lepp , Hedda Lilleås, MoniksOlsenEvjenth Åsmund Persson Ødegaard , SiljeHenrietteAadne , Benjami n Al e x a n d e r Faulkner , Ingvild LauvstadSund e Ludo v an der Lee, Å s m u n d Persson Ødegaard,ÅseVegge,Daniel Holdning Jones Isak Foss Ingrebrigsten , TorErikAasestad , Guro H o v e lstad , Ma r t e Vestvik , Amanda Halvorsen, Guro Witsø 10Page

A big part of the process is therefore to test out ideas and to kill your babies; “To kill your darlings”. As much as it sucks, not all creative ideas are via ble. Hard work and many late nights are trashed for the benefit of ideas and visions that, hopefully, will be more to the audience’s liking. Concepts one might believe could work, just did not work in practice… Imagine the stage workers, who have built the entire set and rigged all the lights, and then they decide to tear down 80% of what was rigged… But for every idea that is tested, the end result is improved and influenced by the many creative, and often random, suggestions that pop up during the process.

Naked Behind The Scenes

It’s no secret that working closely over a long period of time creates a close-knit group. This togetherness and safety in each other is essential for the work that the actors do, but also for the expression of the show. For the actors, this safety is created in most part through exposing themsel ves. Doing improvisation and sharing ideas is vul nerable, and one is often naked in front of others when one shares and conveys in this manner. But if you are naked with me, I’ll happily be naked with you. And in this way we grow safer with each other.

Many Long Days

When I ask how many hours the different functi onaries and heads of committee have spent in their position, I rarely get an answer. They just don’t know. There is an immense number of hours that are clocked in, in the many committees. To give some perspective, the contract that a functionary has says 40 working hours during the employment before and during UKA. 40 hours is devoured and done within a week for several of the workers in the revy-block. In one week. And that is outside of the intensive period.

The intensive period often begins right before or in the UKEvacuum. Then the show is “moved” to the house, in the sense that they actually live at Samfunnet. Or more precisely, first and foremost they do revy preparations, and then they live. And there will be even more long days in the costume attic and the rehearsal rooms until the show starts with a bang.

Some Recognition Would Be Nice!?

If it was up to me, I would perhaps have wanted more recognition for the many long nights. But everyone I’ve talked to and asked give the same answer: “The rush of seeing it on stage is enough”. There’s just something about contributing in a production like the UKErevy, most people say: “We don’t do it for creds, but because the process itself is fun”. Even though us sitting in the audience don’t consider the many hours spent, the ones backstage know how much work is behind such a production. And this amount of effort is something to be very proud of.

Everything Has an End

As the summer days turn to autumn and the month of October is upon us, you realize that it’s all almost over. All of a sudden the days are less busy, there is more time to actually be a student, or to do more than just work. It’ll undeniably be bittersweet. The many hours behind the scenes are summed up and they’re left with a finished show. Everything has its end. The good thing about the end of a student revy is that it all ends with an applause like a thunderstorm.

What’s Up With Orange?

Let’s begin with the story of the Orange. With the rendez-vous between a Yellow and a Red. Maybe at a coffee shop? Where they talked, laughed, flirted and gazed into each other’s eyes. They both wanted to meet again. Then they went their separate ways, with butterflies in their bellies and messy thoughts in their heads. Some time passed and both hoped the other would text.

Had this happened in the modern world, Orange may never have been born. But luckily, Yellow put on a brave face and texted Red. And they met up for a hot evening. Poured wine into their respective milk glasses. From sitting half a meter apart, the evening ended in a hot embrace and intense kisses. And dot…dot…dot, 9 months later Orange was born!

Okay, maybe it didn’t happen exactly like that. Although orange is a mix between yellow and red.

But what makes the colour orange so hot and sexy? For one, its versatility. It can be both apparent and brutal, for example in its neon form. At the same time it can be relaxing and warm as it hovers over the autumn landscape.

Anyhow, here is a small introduction of orange things I like (or maybe don’t like that much).

There used to be an orange car here in Ås a while back. My personal opinion is that it was quite a nifty car. It had character, and was pretty much alone in its colour. And after having observed this car a couple of times I wondered why orange cars aren’t a concept? Those who had an eventful childhood know what the yellow car is. And I think there should be a very own version of an orange car, same concept, different colour. There are hardly any orange cars (as far as I know), which means there’s less punching. Instead one can introduce an orange rule, where you can punch even harder.

I have an orange shovel lying around in my car. It’s a kind of shovel that can be used if you get stuck in a ditch. It was bought in a rather stressful moment in October 2020. I had bought my first car, and in the heat of the pandemic I was gonna drive across the mountains instead of riding the public transportation. So I bought myself a shovel. Because in my dramatic head I pictured all possible scenarios. The worst scenario included me encountering a car stuck in a ditch that I would have to dig out and it was snowing like hell around me and I was becoming snowed in and the shovel didn’t work as promised…

I haven’t had use for the shovel at all. (And for that I’m honestly relieved).

In other aspects orange is used in the well-known prison uniforms in America. Associations with prisons aren’t very positive. But orange is also the colour of the sun (with a little bit of good will), so maybe the intenti on is to create a little sunshine in an otherwise sad and confined everyday life. Just a theory, but consider that!

There are also many other orange things that never get much attention. Among other things, the lesser known cousin of wine, orange wine. Orange wine is evidently a version of white wine. Problem nr. 1: it’s not even its own wine. And that’s not all, orange wine is a result of white wine made using the red wine method.

Well, there’s a lot that can be discussed about Oran ge. No matter if you love orange or not, at least it’s a colour. And it’s eye catching and bright. And seen in an autumnal perspective it’s maybe a colour that reminds us that things will end. At the same time most things begin during autumn. So maybe orange is a very good mixture of something that begins and so mething that ends.

Interview with Hagle

We find the duo in the pit at Rudskogen Motorsport Center. The smell of exhaust and burnt rubber lingers in the air as cars are flying by at intimidatingly high speeds. Tonight they will be headlining, along with TIX, in front of crazy petrolheads at GateTval: UKA i Ås.

Hagle, consisting of Andre Jensen and Olav Tokerud, is a Norwegian country rap duo that took Norway by storm in 2020. They take inspiration from their own lives when writing music, and their songs describe the small town and “ragge” life in such a way that it might convert even the most conventional of big city people. They met in high school, where they started rapping about life and how growing up in Mysen was. “At the time we were doing a lot of so-called “Mysen-rap’’, Andre smiles. Even though a lot has happened since the glory days of Mysen-rap, Andre and Olav are still the same small town kids that they used to be (with the exception of a somewhat bigger fanbase and a few extra Spellemann awards on their mantle).

Since the release of their debut song “Traktor”, they have released 12 other songs, and across every streaming platform they have over 100 milion streams in total! For a duo that has been producing music for barely two years, they’ve grown incredibly fast. Several of the songs they’ve produced feature famous artists such as TIX, Ringnes-Ronny and ZadeKing. But, the duo has not only worked with skilled vocalists. The boys are also joined by great musicians and bands that help promote their unique country rap sound. Banjo and rap are the two characteristic elements of Hagle’s music. This, together with the romanticized lyrics of the small town life and “ragge”culture will surely make you tingle from top to bottom.

The attentive might have noticed that it’s not only the UKEsong “Felleskjøpet-dress” that connects them to Ås. Hagle, together with none other than Staysman, recorded the music video for “Bøgda” here in Ås. Right in front of The Clock Building to be precise. Our home sweet home in the middle of a field is a place Hagle will happily park their ride, to say the least!

“Felleskjøpet-dress” has become a cult phenomena in Ås. During the time after its release it was a real Pentagon regular, and lines from the song could be heard across the field and at every party. Spellemann categorized Hagle’s music as party music, the duo disagrees, yet it’s no secret that Hagle’s music is a good fit for every party venue.

On October 29, the boys will be headed for Ås again, and it’s not just us who are excited. “We have high expectations for UKA i Ås” Olav and Andre says. Ås students have a reputation of being “the world’s greatest audience” and a truly electric crowd. They discuss between themselves if they should reveal what they’ve planned for us during the concert at UKA. Ten seconds pass before they’re both too excited to keep it to themselves. They have in fact got big plans for the concert this autumn, and six months ago a show like no other was already planned. “We will bring lots of new elements and stuff to the concerts that have never been tried before!”. Hagle has chosen us as their guinea pigs for their brand new concert experience. There is therefore nothing else to do than to hold on to your concert tickets, jump into the felleskjøpet suit and run to the venue. This is a concert you don’t want to miss!glipp av!

The Week of Mental Health

“It is scary to feel your emotions. At least when the emotions are not good. When you feel more of a knocking loneliness than the feeling of being embraced. When the mouth cannot form a smile. When all you want is to drench yourself in a flower field of happiness, but constantly keep falling down a dark hole with black walls. You should know then that you are not alone. Together we will get you up and over those dark walls, then we will search together for that flower field, and together we will feel joy”.

Do you have dark thoughts? In Ås you can get help at the health center for youth and students. There you can meet someone to talk to and receive guidance.

Drop in: Monday 08:30-11:00 and Wednesday 14:30-19:00 Phone: +47 649 62 240 Phone hours: Monday-Friday 08:30-11:00 and 13:00-15:00 Mail: hfu@as.kommune.no

October 10 is the International Day for Mental Health, and this will of course be marked all over NMBU.

UKA will, together with Samfunnet, the Student Board and SiÅS, mark the International Day for Mental Health. The event will take place all of week 41. It will be marked with several activities, among other things a campfire pan outside Ur for the whole week, activities with the student mentors, lectures from adventurer Thomas Lone, UKEquiz at Samfunnet and many more activities everyone can participate in.

Why is the International Day for Mental Health important?

All humans have mental health. Mental health is not a straight road, sometimes it goes up and sometimes it goes down. Sometimes mental health is influenced by lack of essential things such as enough food and drinks or a lack of sleep. While other times there can be bigger events influencing it, both internal and external.

This year’s marking is all about opening one’s eyes. After two years of an irregular study situation, it has become even more important to look around and notice how the people around you are feeling. You must dare to ask. And daring is not only about sitting through the tough talks. Even simpler, you must dare to ask if those around you want to join in on things that are happening. For many, the last two years have been characterized by loneliness. When we now finally are back to normal times, everyone must contribute in fighting this loneliness.

To include those around you is all about including them in activities. It can be inviting people to join a night at Samfunnet, or just grabbing a cup of coffee or a movie in the collective. But it can be just as important to try motivating people to get involved in something, such as being a volunteer at Samfunnet, joining a union or engaging in a social club.

I hope you will participate in this year’s event. Bring a friend or a stranger and join the activities we can offer.

Sløyfa

For many people, Spritsløyfa is an unfamiliar phenomenon, but for the more experienced wanderer the most traditional and highly valued Spritsløyfa is a cherished highlight and the very signature of UKA i Ås. It can be described as one big candy bag of a jungle with fun surprises around every corner. In this Sløyfa you can dance traditional folk dance to Flatlusa’s folk music at one moment, the next moment spin around FF’s stripping pole, and get a karsk at Trønderforeninga before entering Unity’s disco dance floor.

Tent

Telt

You don’t need a ticket to get into Spritsløyfa when you’re already inside Samfunnet, but due to liquor sales, the age limit to enter is 20. Every night there’s a party, Spritsløyfa is open, and as a special offer it’s also open before UKEauksjonen (pssst…that’s when Studentsamfunnets Sløyfevors is!). So find your flashy shoes and get ready for an adventure you won’t soon forget!

Let us explain the concept a bit more. During UKA, all the rooms and hallways at Samfunnet transform into a long street of various bars that wind like a loop around Festsalen. The bars sell liquor (sprit) - and has therefore gotten the name Spritsløyfa. It is the many associations that each build a bar with its own unique concept, and there are representatives from the associations themselves who serve at the bars.

If you take a loop through Spritsløyfa, you will encounter various types of music, themes, activities, vibes and you’re guaranteed to see an acquaintance (or ten). Sløyfa offers something for everyone, whether you want to dance, play beer pong, talk, drink or just be fascinated by all the associations have to offer. A dream place for the one wanting some of everything - in a delightful chaos of people around every nook and cranny of Samfunnet.

Fretex Drøbak + UKErevue

Kostmask (Costume and Makeup Department), a part of the revy (variety show) team, have made a fruitful deal with Fretex Drøbak. Colourful and bizarre clothes that aren’t sold at the second hand shop, are turned into fun and tailored costumes for this year’s UKErevy. KS’s, NK’s and Funkis’ are all very pleased.

-All the costumes for the UKErevy will be made of second hand textiles, Guro Hovelstad explains. She has recently picked up two garbage bags full of textiles from Drøbak. Guro is a KS and the initiator of the partnership with Fretex.

The deal is the perfect symbiosis. Fretex Drøbak gets rid of the clothes that no one has bought. While the UKErevy gets textiles with bright colours and animal prints, hats, and lots of other fun stuff. Size and shape doesn’t matter, as everything can be redesigned! Guro can also call and “order” textiles in certain colours and patterns, and these are put to the side until the next pick-up.

For a long time, the mentality at Kostmask has been to reuse, but it has never been officially decided that no new clothes will be bought. The motivation behind this decision is the wor ld’s overconsumption of natural resources. Revy costumes are fun, but they are not necessary for everyday life. It’s good to make use of old textiles to lengthen their lifespan. If you can avoid buying new clothes, you will also avoid increasing the demand for new textiles that require a substantial amount of natural resources (check the info box).

Only using second hand textiles does require some extra work. Some of the people in the group have a lot of experience when it comes to sewing, while others are completely unfamiliar with the sewing machine. The more experienced sewers have the opportunity to use their creati vity when redesigning and constructing patterns (yes – all the costumes in the UKErevy are costume fit!). Those with less experience who sew, have the opportunity to learn how to sew and view the different possibilities that exist. Everybody learns along the way, and think that it’s both positive and fun to reuse. By the way, some of the sewing machines are rented from Ås Volunteer Central –now we’re talking full cycle.

On October 25, UKA i Ås is arranging a thrift day which includes Pimp My Wardrobe. Here, sewing machines will be available, and Kostmask will provide help and support for fixing and redesig ning your own clothes. The team is both skilled and inspirational. Join them and let your creativity loose by reusing what you already have.

Facts about the clothing industry:

The fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water yearly. This amount is proportional to the water consumption-need of five million people.

Every Norwegian throws an average of 23kg of clothing each year.

97% of our used clothes is sent out of the country. A lot of it eventually ends up in landfills, like the one in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

6,7% of the global greenhouse emissions comes from the production of clothing.

Nonograms

The goal of a nonogram is to color in as many squares as is required by the collum above, or by the row on the side. These numbers indicate how many colored squares are joint next to another. If there are two numbers listes, like 2 4, this indicates that there should first be two joint and colored squares, then four joint and colored squared. There has to be at least one empty square between these colored stretches. The squares with a cross can not be colored. After having colored all the correct squares an image will appear!
