he Kentucky track and field and cross country squads benefit from some of the finest facilities in intercollegiate track, including the impressive indoor facility Nutter Field House—the host site of the 2009 SEC Championships. The field house is an $8.5 million climate-controlled structure that is used for winter conditioning and indoor track and field meets. The facility features an artificial turf football playing field of 108,000 square feet, surrounded by a six-lane, 290-meter track. One of the most unique features of this 132,000-square foot, multi-million dollar showplace is the electronic netting system. The system allows for different combinations of sports to practice safely and simultaneously by dividing the playing field into multiple practice areas. In addition to the indoor facilities, the University of Kentucky’s Shively Track has been a fixture on the UK campus since 1959, when the site was developed and later named in honor of former Director of Athletics Bernie Shively.

The track and field team room in the Shively Sports Complex provides UK athletes with a comfortable space in which to relax and unwind after practice.

Shively Track has been host to three SEC outdoor track and field championships as well as numerous high school and Bluegrass Games events.

he Kentucky track and field and cross country teams call Shively Training Center home for strength and conditioning. The 2,000-square foot complex is under the direction of Coach Stephanie Tracey-Simmons and features a variety of free weight equipment, which complements the training philosophy of the Shively staff. The primary focus of the facility is the development of core strength using ground-based, multi-joint lifting through use of the Olympic lifts. By incorporating this explosive style of lifting, athletes become more powerful, resulting in an increase in speed. The core of the athlete’s body also is trained and complemented with a variety of lifts, including squats, lunges, plyometrics, presses, pulls, trunk rotation and abdominal exercise. Through the combination of these exercises, the athletes are better able to reach their goals. Another major focus of the strength staff is the development of sport-specific speed, agility and conditioning. This facet of training is organized through different types of footwork patterns, drills and linear fitness. While nearly all of UK’s Olympic sports teams train at Shively, they also take part in “Speed School,” a twice-weekly seven-week training session in Nutter Field House.

The Nutter Center training room covers more than 5,000 square feet and includes ample space for taping and treatment. Inside the training room is a modern rehabilitation area and whirlpool therapy area, as well as physicians’ and trainers’ offices. The latest addition to the Nutter training room is the “Swim-Ex,” a state-of-the-art aquatic therapy system that is used for the rehabilitation of injuries. The Shively Sports Complex and Nutter Training Center are multi-million dollar training facilities for the UK track and field and cross country programs.

LOOKING AHEAD

2009 CROSS COUNTRY OUTLOOK n 2008 Kentucky cross country ended the year the where they wanted – competing at the NCAA National Championships – and left the meet with a goal to repeat that feat and improve in 2009. The UK women wrapped up last season at the NCAA Team Championships for the first time since a National Runner-Up finish in 1989. The 2008 Wildcats placed 31st overall in their trip to the Championships and finished the year receiving votes in the final USTFCCCA National Poll. A gutsy, second-place performance at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Clemmons, N.C., propelled the Wildcats to their fifth NCAA appearance in school history. Kentucky will miss the services of departed seniors Jenna and Jessica Ortman, both 2009 All-Southeast Regional selections, and the veteran leadership of Andrea Halasek a 2008 AllSoutheast Regional runner. However, the Wildcat women return four harriers from their NCAA appearance last season. On the men’s side, Adam Henken returns after becoming the first Wildcat man to run at the NCAA Cross Country Championships since 2003 when UK competed as a team. A few weeks earlier, Henken placed fifth overall at the NCAA Southeast Regional to automatically qualify for the Championship Meet as an individual, while earning his first All-Southeast Regional honor. The Wildcat men are an experienced team after losing just one of their top six

I

runners at the Regional a year ago. UK head coach Don Weber is confident that the recent progression of both teams will continue this season. “We anticipate both teams will be better than we have been in the past, so we are eager to see where we are at the beginning of the season and hopefully everyone will be eager and encouraged about where we go from there,” Weber said.

WOMEN’S TEAM PREVIEW The story on the women’s team may not be just the four returning NCAA veterans from last season but the influx of nine talented newcomers, some of which could contribute to the team immediately. Junior Katherine Peterson and senior Lindsay Petri were two of the five women who scored in each meet they ran in 2008, including the NCAA Championship meet. Peterson consistently ran towards the front of the UK field, never finishing below fourth on the team last year. Petri could not have picked a better time to run her personal-best 6K run than at the 2008 NCAA Southeast Regional. There Petri’s 36thplace finish as the fifth Wildcat across the finish line sealed UK’s trip to the NCAA Championships by securing a second-place team finish and an automatic bid. Senior Claire Laverty and junior Suzanne Holt also return with NCAA experience. Holt ran in every meet in 2008 while Laverty com-

peted in the final four races of the year after battling early-season injuries. Both ladies are healthy and confident going into the 2009 season. Sophomore Audrey Holbrook will add depth to the squad after competing in three early-season races a year ago. Incoming freshman Chelsea Oswald comes to Lexington fresh off of a Nike Indoor National Championship in the 5,000m run and an AllAmerican cross country performance in the Footlocker National Qualifier in her final year of high school. Classmate Jessica Zangmeister is another incoming freshman that ran at the national level in the Footlocker National Championships. Zangmeister shattered her high school record books in middle distance and distance events. As a high school junior the new Wildcat claimed the 3,200m run indoor state championship in her native Ohio. Three additional newcomers also hold state high school individual event championships. Altogether, five of the nine new Wildcats have regional and national meet experience. “We have had steady improvement in my tenure at UK in the last two years going from ninth in the region to fourth to second and qualifying for the national championships,” said UK assistant coach for cross country John Mortimer. “I feel really good about this squad coming in because we have a youthful squad that is heavy with talent including nine freshman women and a couple of key returners. Assuming that our upperclassmen can lead and our talented freshmen live up to their billing, I think it’s going to be a pretty successful year.” UK freshmen (from left) Cally Macumber, Jessica Zangmeister and Chelsea Oswald are expected to make a major contribution to the 2009 women’s team.

2009 Cross Country Guide

LOOKING AHEAD MEN’S TEAM PREVIEW

Incoming UK freshman Patrick McGregor was a fivetime high school All-American.

The UK men’s team returns five of its top six runners from a team that finished 13th at the 2008 NCAA Southeast Regional. Junior Adam Henken finished first for the Wildcats in six of the seven meets he ran last season. After qualifying as an individual at the NCAA Championships, the All-Southeast Regional honoree should provide a strong building block for this year’s team. Newcomer Luis Orta might be new to the cross country team but not to Wildcat track fans. Orta set three freshman records during the 2009 track season, just weeks after joining UK in January. A native of Venezuela, Orta ran for his national cross country team in international

competition. In 2007 he finished 80th overall at the World Cross Country Championships. Mortimer cites Henken and Orta as keys to the Wildcats’ success this season. “We had a youthful team last year and the year before and now that youthful team is starting to mature and become a more experienced team,” said Mortimer. “We’re led by Adam Henken who qualified for the national championships as an individual and Luis Orta. Their ability to contribute on the cross country course is going to be really important to us.” Sophomores John Luttrell, Colin Heenan along with senior Will Rover also return from the Southeast Regional team in addition to Henken. Luttrell and Heenan ran in every meet for the Wildcats last season while Rover missed one race. Luttrell scored in four meets while never placing below sixth on the team. Heenan placed first on the team at the opening meet last season and placed three more times for the Cats. Rover ran his best race as a Wildcat at the SEC Championships, finishing second on the team with a personal-best 10K time. A pair of state high school cross country champions will add depth to the experienced UK squad as freshmen. Matt Sonnenfeldt, the 2008 Tennessee state cross country champion, and Patrick McGregor, the 2007 Alabama state cross country champion, should contribute to the team immediately. Sophomore John Luttrell scored in four meets for the Wildcats in 2008.

COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH DON WEBER ntering his 26th season as head coach at the University of Kentucky, Don Weber has seen NCAA Champions, All-America honors, Conference Champions and academic honors. Overall, he has dedicated his time and passion over the past 32 years including the six seasons Weber served as head cross country coach and as an assistant coach for track and field. Weber has built Kentucky into the prestigious program that it is today. A veteran to the Southeastern Conference, Weber’s coaching tenure at UK is the longest among his peers in the league. Weber has spearheaded track and field and cross country at UK since 1984, and under his direction, the program has become a staple at the national championships. National success quickly followed after Weber was elevated to direct the program. His 1985 women’s cross country team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats improved the following year with a third-place national finish, leading up to his crowning achievement. In 1988, Weber guided the UK women’s cross country team to the NCAA National Championship title. At the same national championship event, the men’s team finished eighth. In 1989, the women’s squad returned to the Championship as the National RunnerUp. In 2008 Weber helped guide a new generation to the national stage as the women’s team made its fifth post-season appearance at the NCAA Championships.

E

In recognition of the Wildcats’ success on the cross country course, Weber was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. Prior to that, he was honored as NCAA District III Coach of the Year in 1985. In both of those years, he also received the SEC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Weber has been named SEC Women’s Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1988 and 1989) and was Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in 1995. After more than two decades at the helm of the Kentucky program, Weber’s athletes have earned 187 NCAA All-America honors and six Wildcats have won 10 NCAA individual national championships. He has also coached a total of 106 SEC individual champions. During Weber’s tenure at Kentucky, Wildcat cross country and track and field athletes have consistently been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Weber’s prolific coaching career stems from his vast experience as a Kentucky athlete and former SEC Champion. As a student-athlete Weber participated in track and cross country at UK from 1968-72. In 1970, he helped his team to the SEC Cross Country Championship, which led to an ALL-SEC honor in cross country. Weber also received All-SEC honors in indoor track from 1968-72. He was the SEC 1000-yard champion in 1972, establishing a then-conference record with a time of 2:10.20. Weber received the UK Athletic Leadership Award the same year. In addition to all of his honors and records, he was named captain of both the cross country and track squads. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from UK in education in 1973, he began his coaching career at Jesse Stuart High School in

Louisville. Following two successful years at the high school level, he entered the collegiate ranks as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Murray State University in Murray, Ky. While coaching the Racers, Weber earned a master’s degree in secondary education. In 1975, the Concentracion Deportiva de Pinchincha (the Sports Committee of the Ecuadorian State of Pichincha) selected Weber as the National and Olympic Track and Field Coach and to guide the team at the Montreal Summer Games. COACHING STAFF

ASST. COACH JOHN MORTIMER entucky assistant coach for distance and cross country, John Mortimer, enters his third year in Lexington. He has made an immediate impact on the Wildcat cross country program and distance track events during his relatively

K

short tenure at UK. Last year, Mortimer helped guide the women’s cross country team to its first NCAA Cross Country Championship appearance in 19 years. The Wildcats’ second-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional secured an automatic bid to the Championships. Under Mortimer’s direction, the UK women have improved each season at the regional from a ninth-place finish in 2006 to a fourth-place rank in 2007 prior to last season’s runner-up showing. On the men’s side, sophomore Adam Henken represented UK at the NCAA meet after placing fifth overall at the regional to automatically qualify as an individual. After two cross country seasons in the Bluegrass, Mortimer has guided three Cats to All-SEC honors while five athletes have earned six All-Regional awards. Moreover, middle distance and distance athletes have accounted for 17 new entries in the UK record books since 2007. A pair of those athletes earned All-SEC honors in the steeplechase the past two seasons. Luis Orta and Andrea Halasek clinched all-conference recognition honors in the event by virtue of secondand third-place finishes at the 2009 and 2008 SEC Championships, respectively. Halasek holds the UK women’s varsity mark in the event while Orta set the UK men’s freshman mark last year. Additionally in the 2008 indoor season, Mortimer guided the women’s distance medley relay to a second-place finish at the SEC Championships. In 2007, Mortimer joined the University of Kentucky from Boston College where he served five years as the Eagles’ distance coach. During that time, he coached 13 men and six women who rank among BC’s all-time top five in middle distance and distance events. Under Mortimer’s guidance in 2006, Patrick Mellea broke a 27-year-old school record in the indoor mile. Mortimer also spent time as the coach of professional runner Amy Mortimer (no relation) from 2004-06 while she was in graduate school at Boston College. Under his direction, she qualified for two consecutive IAAF World Cross Country Championships, had five top-five finishes at U.S. Championship events and ran a personal-best 1,500-meter time of 4:07 to capture the bronze medal at the 2005 U.S. Outdoor Championships. Despite coaching for the only non-scholarship

men’s track and field program in the BIG EAST, he directed a men’s 4x800 relay team that broke a 30-year-old school record and the New England Collegiate record. He also led the men’s cross country squad to a top-five finish at the 2003 BIG EAST Championship. In addition to his coaching duties, Mortimer served as the track and field chairman of the USATF’s New England Executive Board of Governors from 2003-06. His responsibilities included the promotion and development of track and field and running throughout New England. In 1999, he co-founded and currently serves as the race director of the country’s largest 1-mile road race – the Millennium Mile Road Race. In that capacity, he is responsible for event operations, sponsorships and publicity. Prior to his career at BC, Mortimer got his start in coaching at Harvard where he spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach. In 1999, Mortimer signed a contract as a professional runner and also has represented the United States at the 1997 World University Games and the 1998 Goodwill Games. As a professional runner, Mortimer finished seventh at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 3,000m steeplechase with a career best time of 8:24.64. Jenna Ortman placed 15th overall with a mark of 21:29 to garner her first career All-Regional medal. Sophomore Katherine Peterson raced across the finish in 31st, clocking in at 21:51. Senior Andrea Halasek finished steps behind in 34th overall in a time of 21:53. But it was junior Lindsay Petri’s personal-best 6K run of 21:57 in 36th place that sealed Kentucky’s trip to the NCAA National Championships. The spread from UK runners one through five was a mere 31 seconds. Earlier in the year at the SEC Championships in Starkville, Miss., the Wildcat women placed sixth overall as a team with three individuals placing in the top 25. Jessica Ortman led the Wildcats with a 15th-place finish by posting a season-best 6K time of 21:07. Jenna Ortman clocked in at 21:30 to place 18th overall. Sophomore Katherine Peterson finished steps behind for third place on the squad, crossing the finish line in 21:39 good for 24th overall.

2008 MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW ast season, Kentucky sophomore Adam Henken became the first Wildcat man to run at the NCAA Cross Country Championships since 2003 when the Wildcats competed as a team. Henken finished 166th overall with a 10K time of 31:25 in Terre Haute, Ind. Henken’s end of the season was the best for any Wildcat this millenium. A few weeks earlier, Henken placed fifth overall at the NCAA Southeast Regional to automatically qualify for the Championship Meet as an individual, while earning his first All-Southeast Regional honor. At the SEC Championships a month prior, the Catharpin, Va., native was tabbed a member of the All-SEC Second Team and ran a personal best 10K time of 30:26. At the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by Wake Forest University, the UK men finished 13th overall. Freshman John Luttrell finished second behind Henken in the 50th position for his best finish on the squad this season. Senior Bruce Hordusky ran across the line in 75th place while firstyear harrier Colin Heenan placed 94th overall. The final scorer for the Cats was junior Jeremy Zagorski, scored in each UK meet this season, finished in the 107th slot. The men’s squad finished 2008 ranked 12th in the

He ran a personal-best time of 24:12 to place 14th overall and earn All-SEC Second Team honors. Junior Will Rover completed his best race as a Wildcat to finish second on the team with a personal-best time of 25:08 to finish 32nd overall. Seniors Chris Long (47th) and Hordusky (48th) crossed the finish line together while junior Zagorski placed fifth on the team (61st). Three Wildcats scored in each meet this season. Henken, along with seniors Zagorski and Hordusky, led the young squad in 2008. Two freshmen also stepped up for the Blue and White. Colin Heenan won the opening meet of the year at Memphis and placed in three other meets for the Cats. Meanwhile, John Luttrell placed in four meets for the Cats while never finishing below sixth on the team. With four of their top scoreres returning to the team, the Cats have a solid foundation to build upon during the 2009 cross country season.

President Todd is the sixth UK alumnus to hold the presidency. President Todd has concentrated his efforts and energies on helping his alma mater achieve a greater level of national prominence. He launched the University of Kentucky’s Top 20 Business Plan in December 2005. The plan is a quantitative analysis highlighting what it will take for UK to achieve its state-mandated goal of building a Top 20 public research university. Widely hailed as the first business plan by a public university in the nation, UK’s plan garnered widespread national attention. It has been featured by national media outlets and recognized by peer institutions, as several higher education leaders have visited UK’s campus to learn more about the Business Plan approach.

itch Barnhart is in his eighth year at the University of Kentucky, with unparalleled accomplishments in his past and unprecedented goals for the future. When he arrived in 2002, Barnhart’s first move was to totally support all 22 varsity sports with the maximum number of scholarships and coaches, along with the facilities, equipment and support staff needed to make those teams successful. The commitment to fully fund every sport produced never-before-seen successes in UK athletics, with first-ever Southeastern Conference championships in baseball, men’s golf and women’s tennis. Perhaps the biggest on-field turnaround has been in football, where Barnhart’s hire of Rich Brooks has led the Wildcats to bowl wins in three

ATHLETICS MITCH BARNHART Social responsibility in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is a priority for Barnhart, who has been extremely active in community service and encourages the UK athletics staff to do the same. Not content with past successes, Barnhart’s ambitious course for the future was revealed with his recent announcement of the “15x15x15” plan. The goals are to win at least 15 conference or national championships and rank among the NCAA’s top 15 athletic programs by 2015 – all of which would represent unprecedented achievements for UK Athletics – while continuing to expand UK Athletics’ service to the local community and commonwealth of Kentucky. Another goal of the initiative is a cumulative 3.0 gradepoint average for UK’s 500 student-athletes. Barnhart arrived at Kentucky from Oregon State, where he served four successful years (1998-2002) as athletics director. Before his term at OSU, he worked in athletics administration posts at Tennessee (1986-98), Southern Methodist University (1983-86), Oregon (1983) and San Diego State (1982-1983). In order to make the dreams a reality, Barnhart spearheaded record-breaking growth in philanthropic giving, ticket sales and a comprehensive multi-media rights agreement. Barnhart’s connection to UK student-athletes is evident by his individual interaction and dedication to provide the support services necessary to meet their needs. UK Athletics spends more than $1.5 million annually on its nationally renowned Center for Academic and Tutorial Services. He also began the CATSPYs, an annual awards program that honors the best of UK Athletics. Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’s leadership include the UK Athletics Hall of Fame and the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facility that includes new practice and administrative space for a variety of sports. Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fields of competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financial needs, Barnhart initiated a $1.2 million annual contribution to the University’s scholarship program, a contribution that is being increased to $1.7 million this year.

Mitch Barnhart speaks at the CATSPYS, hosted annually by the UK Athletics Department to honor its studentathletes. The popular awards show, which began in 2003, is modeled after the ESPY Awards on ESPN and provides a unique way to recognize Kentucky varsity athletes for their many outstanding accomplishments.
