HEAD COACH BRIAN CRAIG

Brian Craig is in his 17th season as head coach ber of one of the most successful teams in school history as the Gators of the University of Kentucky’s men’s golf team. Before coming to UK, Craig spent two years at the helm of the University of Central Florida’s golf team. At UCF, Craig coached the Golden Knights to a second-place finish in the 2001 Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament. In his first recruiting class at UCF in 2000, Craig signed four nationally ranked golfers, three of whom made the TAAC’s All-Freshman Team, including league Freshman of the Year. Before landing his first head-coaching job, Craig served as assistant coach at the University of Florida, his alma mater, for two years (1997-99). As a Gator assistant, Craig had the opportunity to mentor two All-Americans and seven All-SEC golfers, including 1999 SEC Player of the Year Steve Scott. He also helped guide Florida to the 1999 SEC Championship. Craig began a three-year professional career as a golfer shortly after graduating from UF with honors in economics in 1992. He competed in numerous mini-tour events, winning the Powerbilt Tour Northwoods Championship in 1995 and the 1996 Future Majors Tour Harbor Hills Championship. In 1994, Craig competed in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh and finished sixth at the Jamaican Open. ASSISTANT COACH BEN FUQUA Former Wildcat great Ben Fuqua returned to the Big Blue Nation as an assistant coach for the Kentucky men’s golf team in July of 2015. Fuqua was a former captain and four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats from 2005-09. “It is with great enthusiasm that I announce Ben Fuqua as our new assistant coach,” Craig said at the time of his hire. “Ben played for us and was an exceptional player and a true servant leader as team captain. He has tremendous integrity and a passion for mentoring young people. Throw in the fact that he can flat-out teach putting and loves the University of Kentucky and we have a perfect match. I can’t wait for Coach Fuqua to get started helping us pursue our goal of winning SEC and NCAA Championships.” Fuqua (pronounced FEW-kway) began his career at Kentucky as a member of the 2005 SEC Championship squad. In all, he served as team captain for his final two seasons and appeared in 24 tournaments throughout his career. He claimed four top-five performances, which included one victory. In his first season as an assistant, Fuqua helped guide the Wildcats to a 13th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Tyler “Chip” McDaniel became UK’s first All-America selection since 2005 after finishing in the top five of six total events. The Cats finished in the top five in four events during his second season, and Cooper Musselman earned All-Region accolades. Following his playing career, Fuqua played professional golf for three years before moving into the coaching ranks. Fuqua served as the head coach at Asbury University and Lexington Catholic High School from 2013-14 before serving as a volunteer assistant at Kentucky during the 2014-15 season. At Asbury, Fuqua helped direct Steven Brooks to the 2013 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Individual Championship. During his rise up the coaching ranks, Fuqua also served as a private golf instructor. The former 2003 Kentucky Mr. Golf and the 2003 KHSAA State Champion captured three United States Golf Association medals during his amateur career. He holds the UK record for a 54-hole tournament score (198) and was a two-time All-SEC Academic team member. Furthermore, he rose to a top-10 ranking in the GolfWeek Individual College Rankings during his junior season. A native of Danville, Kentucky, Fuqua earned a bachelor of arts in communications from Kentucky in 2010.
