2017-18 MEDIA GUIDE

GO LDA B O RST Head Coach | Visby, Sweden | Eighth Season

Golda Borst’s Kentucky coaching career has been defined by postseason appearances. Having completed her seventh season as the head coach of the women’s golf team in 201617, she’s led the Wildcats to six NCAA Regional appearances and a breakthrough individual showing in the 2015 NCAA Championships. UK’s 2015 NCAA Regional showing set the program’s longest NCAA Tournament streak in school history at five while Isabelle Johansson’s NCAA Championships appearance marked the first since Heather Kraus qualified in 1998. After Borst’s program record run of five straight postseason appearances came to an end in 2015-16, the Wildcats bounced back in a big way in 2016-17. UK posted four top-five CO M P E T E

finishes in its 10 stroke-play tournament format events, plus a win at the Battle of the Bluegrass in a dual match vs. Louisville. The Wildcats also shot three rounds under par as a team, including a school-record 277 (11-under par) in the final round of the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate. UK’s team scoring average of 298.13 is the second best in school history, behind Borst’s 2013-14 squad. Individually, there were a number of milestones in 2016-17. Johansson tied for first at the season-opening Minnesota Invitational in the fall before Sarah Shipley followed by winning the individual bracket at the East & West Match Play Challenge. Jordan Chael went low at the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate with a 65 and then Johansson did one better with a 64 at the UCF Challenge, tying the best 18-hole score in school history. In seven years as the Kentucky coach, Borst has continued on the path of taking the program to new heights. Under Borst, UK has posted seven of the top eight single-season scoring averages in program history while claiming 18 of the 20 lowest 18-hole rounds. Under the guidance of Borst, 17 of the top 20 single-season player scoring averages in program history played under Borst. Additionally, 14 of the top 15 marks for most

single-season par or better rounds played under Borst. Academically, the program has been just as good as the on-the-course performances. The Wildcats have racked up 15 Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team honors. The program consistently finishes among UK’s team grade-point average leaders, including leading all teams during the spring 2016 semester with a 3.713 team GPA. Borst hit the ground running in her first year in 2010-11 and hasn’t looked back. In just her first season, in 2010-11, the Wildcats recorded what was then the secondand third-lowest rounds in program history, shooting a 287 in the first round of the UCF Challenge and a 288 in the third round of the Cougar Classic. Kentucky’s 54-hole scoring average of 306.30 was, at the time, the secondbest mark in program history. As a team, the Wildcats finished in the top 10 in half of the tournaments they played in. The Wildcats improved their scoring average by 1.57 strokes in Borst’s second year in the program in 2011-12. Kentucky earned an eight-stroke victory at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, the first win for the program since 2009, and three top-five finishes, the most in a season since the 2005-06 team recorded

five top-five finishes. The Wildcats’ six top-10 finishes was the most since the 2008-09 team recorded seven. In her third season at the helm, Borst’s squad broke the program’s 54-hole season scoring average by 3.63 strokes, which was previously set in 2011-12. Kentucky brought home a firstplace finish in the very first tournament of the season, the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational. For the season, UK finished with three topfive finishes, including fifth place at the SEC Championship. The Wildcats broke the program’s 54-hole season scoring average for the third straight season in 2013-14, this time smashing the mark by 4.97 strokes. Kentucky brought home a firstplace finish in the very first tournament of the season, the “MO”Morial Invitational. For the season, UK finished with four top-five finishes while firing three of the top five lowest rounds in program history. Without any seniors on the roster in 201415, Borst took a young team and nearly broke the program single-season scoring average for a fourth year in a row. The Wildcats finished with the then-second-best stroke average in school history and posted their best postseason finish under Borst when they finished in seventh place at the NCAA South Bend Regional, just barely missing on the program’s first NCAA Championships berth as a team since 1992. In addition to five top-10 finishes during the season, the highlight of the 2014-15 season came at the NCAA South Bend Regional when Johansson qualified for the NCAA Championships in thrilling fashion. Playing in just her sixth collegiate tournament, Johansson won in a three-hole playoff to qualify for the NCAA Championships, the first Wildcat to do so since 1998. Borst’s program missed the postseason in 2015-16 due in large part to a slew of injuries. Youth was forced into action earlier than it was ready for, but the Wildcats still made strides. Johansson built on her 2015 NCAA Championships appearance by leading the team in stroke average to go along with a team-high six top-50 finishes. Anna Hack came on late in her freshman season with two top25 finishes in her final three tournaments and

qualified that summer for the U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur. Borst joined the Wildcats from LSU where she served as assistant women’s golf coach from 2007-10. During her stay in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, LSU advanced to the NCAA regionals each of Borst’s three seasons, highlighted by a 12th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships. With Borst, the Tigers recorded a 295.40 team-stroke average during 2009, improving upon the 300.40 posted in 2008. The 2009 season also saw LSU victories at the Bryan Park National Collegiate and Mercedes-Benz Championship, as well as two individual titles. During 2010, LSU earned an individual title while registering a 54-hole 298.00 stroke average. A four-year letterwinner for the women’s golf team, Borst graduated from Tennessee in 2006 with a degree in communication studies. At Tennessee, Borst served as team captain in 2005 and finished with an 18-hole 76.19 stroke average.

Additionally, Borst earned Second Team All-SEC honors in 2006 and was named a threetime SEC Academic Honor Roll member. Borst’s top collegiate finishes came when she placed second in both the 2005 Bryan Park National Collegiate and 2006 Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. Borst and the Lady Volunteers advanced to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship during the 2004-06 seasons. A native of Visby, Sweden, Borst competed for the Swedish National Golf Team from 1999-2003. With Borst, the team claimed medalist honors at the Girls Team European Championship in 2000, second at the Lady’s Team European Championship in 2001 and third in the Lady’s Team European Championship in 2002. Prior to coaching at LSU, Borst worked at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Sarasota, Florida, assisting in course and tournament operations. Borst, formerly Golda Johansson, is married to Steve Borst. They have a daughter, Lillian.

Assistant Coach | Frankfort, Ky. | Fourth Season

Brian May enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the University of Kentucky women’s golf team in 2017-18 after serving as the head golf professional at the Frankfort Country Club for two and a half years. In May’s first season as an assistant coach at Kentucky, UK made a fifth straight appearance in NCAA Regionals, a school record. The Wildcats returned to the NCAA postseason in 2017 after a banner bounce-back season. At the 2015 NCAA South Bend Regional, the Wildcats finished in seventh place with a furious last-day comeback, just narrowly missing out on the program’s first NCAA Championships berth since 1992. The seventh-place finish is the best of the Golda Johansson Borst era. CO M P E T E

Although the Wildcats were unable to find similar success at the 2017 NCAA Columbus Regional, they bounced back in a big way in 2016-17 thanks to May’s on-course coaching after an injury-plagued 2015-16. UK improved its scoring average by eight strokes from the season before. The 2016-17 team average of 296.13 is the second best in school history. The Wildcats posted nine individual top-10 finishes, carded 38 rounds of par or better and recorded four top-five finishes in stroke-play tournaments in 2016-17. In May’s first season as an assistant, in 2014-15, Isabelle Johansson qualified for the NCAA Championships as an individual in her 2015 freshman season, becoming the first Wildcat to do so since Heather Kraus in 1998. In 2015-16, without key veterans like Ale Walker and Sarah Harris, who missed the entire season because of injuries, UK’s young nucleus was forced into action and made promising strides with the tutelage of May. May helped in the recruitment of highly touted freshmen Josephine Chang and Sarah Shipley, who appeared in nearly every tournament for Kentucky during the 2016-17 season. A native of Frankfort, Kentucky, May graduated from the Golf Academy of the South

in Orlando, Florida. In December of 2007, May returned to Lexington to take additional classes in exercise science at UK. A PGA Level 3 Apprentice, May continued his golf career at the Frankfort Country Club where he served as the assistant golf professional for two years before being promoted to head golf professional in January of 2013. A 2003 graduate of Franklin County High School, May is married to the former Corie Broering.

The 2017 Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, co-hosted by Kentucky and Indiana, will make a return after a six-year hitatus. Now in its 28th season, the 2017 Bettie Lou Evans Invitational will feature 16 teams at the University Club, Oct. 6-8. The Wildcats have won the tournament 11 times, including the last time in 2011. The tournament, formerly known as the Wildcat Fall Invitational, began in 1979 (there were actually two tournaments in 1976 and 1977 before women’s golf became a varsity sport at UK) and was played every year until a four-year break from 1998 to 2001. The Kentucky tournament also took oneyear breaks in 2008 and 2010 before its current six-year gap.

Nancy Scranton, who competed at UK from 1982-84, made an estimated $3,324,205 on the LPGA Tour.

Part of the college experience is preparing students for the next level. Playing collegiate golf at the University of Kentucky is no different. UK has a long history of preparing players for the professional ranks. Players like Nancy Scranton, Myra Blackwelder, Amy Read, Kate Rogerson, Tonya Gilla and Noelle Daghe have molded their games at Kentucky and gone on to successful careers at the next level. Scranton is the most noteworthy of the bunch. She won three times on the LPGA Tour, including a major championship victory at the 1991 du Maurier Classic. A member of the 2000 U.S. Solheim Cup Team, she posted top-10 finishes at three other majors, including third place at the Women’s PGA Championship in 1999 and 2000. All told, Scranton made an estimated $3,324,205 on the LPGA Tour alone. She was also inducted into the LPGA Legends Tour Hall of Fame in 2017 for her success on the women’s senior tour. Blackwelder earned approximately $634,522 on the LPGA Tour during her career before transitioning to the LPGA Legends Tour and eventually a college coach, including at Kentucky from 2008-10. She was the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1980.
