Working cattle shouldn’t be an extremely stressful experience for the cattle or the producer. To alleviate some of the issues that can be encountered with working cattle, care must be taken to ensure that a low-stress environment is achieved in your working facility.

Maximizing welfare involves taking advantage of the animal’s natural behavioral responses. The flight zone, the minimum distance from the animal to induce movement (Figure 1), is one of the more important behavioral concepts that cattlemen can understand. Each animal will have different points of balance and size for its flight zone. For most cattle, the size of their flight zone could be measured in feet, but for others, it may be Left, Figure 1.
