Including Cherry Trees Chatter

Welcome to our final Newsletter for this year, what an exciting year we have had with residential visits and celebrating 40 years of Montessori Education at Cherry Trees! Although the weather wasn’t kind to us we still managed to continue with our Sports Afternoon and B-fest celebrations. It was lovely to see so many of you at these events supporting your children. I hope you are having a wonderful summer and your children are getting ready for another year of exciting learning opportunities.

Next term we'll be launching our School Parent Portal, this will enable you to log in to see all termly reports, house points awarded and much more. Further information will be shared at the beginning of term. We will also be focusing on ‘Uniform Standards’, please make sure your children are prepared and have the correct uniform for the beginning of term. We have a large stock in our second hand shop.

Celebrating 40 years of Montessori at Cherry Trees

It was a wonderful afternoon celebrating with Wendy Compson (Founder of the School), with past pupils visiting and many of our younger students being the second generation to attend our Montessori Nursery. There were many tasty treats made by our Chefs, and lots of laughter mixed in to make a very special time. Wendy Compson is actively involved in Cherry Trees helping us deliver the best possible Montessori Education for all our pupils.

Cherry Trees mothers’ with their Cherry Trees children

In Caterpillars the children have been looking at journeys and different vehicles. They have enjoyed exploring mark making with cars and using their gross motor skills to move the cars through the paint. They have also been reading stories about different journeys such as ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Whatever Next’

.

The Butterflies at Cherry Trees showed a keen interest in Mr. Alan’s wonderful Honda 50 Moped and the mini tractor while learning about vehicles and their uses.

The Butterfly children have recently enjoyed a trip to High Lodge where they had so much fun looking for Zog! The children also spotted a couple of familiar faces whilst they were there, including The Gruffalo and the Little Brown Mouse.

Big thank you go to Mr. Jackson, Courtney, Rachel, Sophie and Coriander for joining us on their adventure.

Reception Class thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Lackford Lakes. The weather didn’t dampen their spirits, they used it to their advantage and had a great time bug hunting. Before long the sun was shining and the children were able to spot dragonflies, damselflies, herons and many swans. We are so fortunate to have such peaceful surroundings on our doorstep.

Humanities

At Brookes we are blessed to be located in the heart of Breckland. Year 7 made the most of this opportunity by visiting two local places to complete fieldwork to support the work we have completed in class this term. Our first location was Castle Hill in Thetford. This is an excellent example of an early Motte and Bailey castle, supporting the work on the Norman conquest and the impact the Normans had on England. After lunch, we visited Santon Downham to carry out some geography skills, we were looking at succession within the forestry.

The weather gods shone on this today, and we had excellent fieldwork conditions.

Brookes UK 6th Sports Day got off to a rather damp start due to untimely rain falling just as the students paraded out to the track in front of a large parent crowd. Spirits, however, were certainly not dampened and this was shown in the excellent sprint races which were the first event of the afternoon. Various field events followed where students had the opportunity to show off their techniques in jumps and throws. Progression was evident in the latter with Year 1 and 2 throwing a bean bag, Years 3-6 throwing a howler, Years 7 and 8 putting the shot and Years 9 and 10 throwing a Javelin. The 800 metre race, which assembled the students who had qualified by reaching a good standard of endurance running pre-sports day, was an excellent event. About 15 of our students had made the required standard and they all ran impressively

Special mentions go to Ethan Head who qualified despite only being in Year 2 and Joel Littlefair who showed a real talent to take the gold position. The House relay followed, a race that had 25 students in each team and this one definitely was the one that got everyone very excited and motivated our students to push themselves to new limits. The last event was the traditional 'Brookes 5', which is a 5 minute endurance run around the track which every student takes part in. Each lap completed provides an individual student with one house point. After a great afternoon's competition and sportspersonship the result was very close but Dragon House came out on top to take the House Cup.

Our final half term has, once again, been action packed and amazing! It has been a half term of experiences, creating memories and embracing the opportunities that boarding at Brookes provides. Our boarders have truly come together and enjoyed their final weeks before the summer holidays. Unfortunately, we will be saying goodbye to some of our boarders, but we believe they have made some great friendships that will last a lifetime.

We've had lots of fun on the weekends, with our International and full-time time Boarders. They have enjoyed trips to the Cinema, as well as the Boarders favourite activity - Escape Rooms (although they are yet to Escape!). They’ve had a day to remember - Paintballing in the Forest!! A personal favourite of ours was the Kayaking trip. A first for most of the Boarders and a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all. We’ve enjoyed the good weather with a day out at the Beach and we even saw some seals whilst we were there! Which was an unexpected but wonderful surprise! As the weather has been mostly dry and sunny, the boarders have taken every opportunity to spend time outside after school and on the weekends. When the weather was really hot, they enjoyed cooling off with water fights and fun on the slip and slide and in the paddling pool! Happy times!

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 11 boarders for completing their GCSE Exams. Good luck to them in the summer when their results come out and we wish them all the best for the future.

Our year ended with our boarders end of year trip. We took everyone to the Phoenix Bike Track to enjoy the fabulous facilities. It was a highlight of the year, seeing everyone come together and have such a great time. It was lovely to see them cheering each other on, especially when some had stepped outside their comfort zone and tried something new. We are so proud of everyone for embracing the challenge and supporting and encouraging each other. It was wonderful to see! Afterwards, we all returned to the boarding house to enjoy a wonderful evening BBQ together - and of course a BBQ wouldn’t be complete without S’mores! It was such an enjoyable trip and evening, the memories of everyone's smiles and laughter will stay with us.

Weekend activities

Prize giving is our last event of the year when we celebrate the achievements of our hard working students. It is a real pleasure to reward those who have tried so hard in their studies. This year we had a special guest to help give out the prizes Graham Brown from Brookes Education group. Well done to all those who achieved a prize. Another well done to Dragon House for gaining the most house points this year. We will be running lots more House competitions this coming year. Fortunately, the rain stayed away and we were able to enjoy a lovely tea with delicious cakes made by our chef and staff. Thank you to parents who attended and joined us for afternoon tea.

Butterfly Graduation

Reception Graduation

Cheery Trees children and their parents enjoyed a lovely picnic in the sunshine before receiving their graduation scrolls.

B-Fest, never disappoints! On a very overcast afternoon we were entertained with wonderful music and dancing from our students. The children loved the bouncy castle and visiting the emergency services vehicles. Thank you to the PTA and the parental support in helping to run this event. Thank you also to everyone who donated prizes for the Raffle and other items to sell/win. This event really helps to raise money for our school students and the enrichment of the curriculum.

Friday tuck shop is an end of week treat for all in the main school. The school councilors asked their forms for suggestions of things they would like to buy. Available are a choice of drinks, a chocolate item, a crisp type snack as well as cheaper sweets like Haribo or lollies. The children then make suggestions for things that the profits can be spent on. A profit of nearly £100 was made in the first half a term of running it. In September two Yr11 students will be helping to run the tuck shop as part of their life skills lessons.
