Nadir Salar Qureshi A seasoned strategist & leader with a futuristic vision, Nadir has extensive experience in consulting, private equity & finance, and brings with him expertise in multiple sectors across GCC, Turkey, Australia, India, ASEAN and EU. He began his career with Engro Chemical Pakistan Ltd as a Business Analyst and then moved on to organizations such as Hub Power Company, Bain & Company (Singapore), Carrier Corporation (Singapore and Australia) and Abraaj Capital (Dubai), leading up to his role as Chief Investment Officer at Makara Capital in Singapore, after which he joined Engro Corp as Chief Strategy Officer.

He completed his MBA from Harvard Business School, and his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Nuclear Engineering from MIT. He is currently a director on the boards of Engro Powergen Limited, Engro Polymer Limited and Engro Vopak Terminal Limited.

We look forward to Nadir’s leadership and guidance as Engro Fertilizers accelerates towards sustainable operational excellence, expansion & diversification of business interests.

15 Million Dollar Tree

L

ike a tree purifying the atmosphere around it, the recently commissioned Feed Gas Enrichment facility at DHK has started purifying the feed gas going into Ammonia-3 enabling Plant-2 to operate at a higher efficiency and load. Today, the project boasts a leakage free startup and ZERO TRIR with over 660,000 plus safe manhours. It also personifies a year of perseverance and unflinching resolve, with the intent of amplifying the Bottom Line for many years to come.

Eliminating the Obsolete “You don’t get into something to test the waters, you go into things to make waves” Ammonia-02 DCS Retrofit is a fast track project that was conceived as part of the site’s long-term reliability initiatives. The vintage TDC-3000 system by Honeywell is being replaced by state-of the art Centum VP Control System from Yokogawa. Post Design and Engineering, the Factory Acceptance Test is a major milestone in an automation project to assess if the system manufacturer has met the user’s technical requirements. Amm-02 DCS System Factory acceptance test was conducted at Yokogawa’s Singapore Staging Facility from 23nd July till 3rd August 2018 and project team is confident of smooth commissioning - Afzal Asad

CT-6 is a new cool!

A 4.03 MUSD Project was concluded successfully in Dec 2018. The team’s hard work, dedication and commitment steered them through bottlenecks faced in installation of the FIRST One-Of-Its-Kind tower at site. The project clocked over 500,000+ safe man-hours and has successfully been integrated with plant circuit in Dec 2018!

MAINTENANCE GAMES CARNIVAL “Teamwork makes the dream work” Team Maintenance has always been consistent in living the dream of working together as a high performance power packed team, both at work and at play! A showcase of outstanding teamwork was witnessed on Sept 06, 2018 at the “MAINTENANCE GAMES CARNIVAL” where three teams from Maintenance Department, MAROON MARINES, BLUE BANDITS and GREEN GAMERS fought for glory. Like every other competition, one of the teams clinched the winning trophy, and the event full of colors, nail biting thrillers and joy that left an ever-lasting impression in every ones mind. And as announced by Adeel Qamar, this was just a start of many more similar events coming up in future.

A journey of excellence Teamwork is at the core of production department, be it on job or off the job. With the winter’s first rain greeting Daharki, nothing could have been more refreshing than gathering around the fire in a freezing cold night with families to blow-off the exhaustion of shift routine.

Exciting competitions including foosball, tug of war, hop ball and many other games played brought the families together and bonds were strengthened.

Synergy and Highest Production

“S

ynergy” and “Highest Production” are the two words that describe Year 2018 for the Production Department in general and Ammonia-3 unit in particular.

The year started with Ammonia-3 Unit breaking the previous records to achieve the longest uninterrupted continuous plant operation with 442 days clocking on the board. This feat was not possible without the Team Work and Synergy between the Production Unit and the Services group.

The unit then took the famous saying “Records are made to be broken” quite literally when it started breaking the “Highest Production” records every other week.

To celebrate these achievements, a special day out was arranged for the unit, giving the team a reason to hang out and cherish the two words that defined their year 2018 in style.

018 was a year of audits for DHK Manufacturing where both PSM & OHIH 3rd party audits by DuPont were carried out.

DuPont performed a deep dive approach for its “Risk Based deep Dive approach” for EFERT DHK and site achieved a 3.9 score in a 5 day long detailed audit. The site

was able to retain its Excellence level in DuPont’s Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene system cementing the fact that our OHIH program is the best in Pakistan and the health and safety of our employees is a top priority. The efforts put in by the whole manufacturing team to

achieve this feat is examplary and worth applauding.

In addition to that we also achieved HACCP certifications for all our Food clubs in the same year.

HSE Awards - 2017

A

wards can give you a tremendous amount of encouragement to keep getting better, no matter how young or old one is. In order to celebrate the success that we had and keeping up with our tradition of recognizing the efforts of all those who kept Health, Safety and Environment at the top of their priorities, HSE Awards ceremony was held in the second half of 2018. Awards were given to both permanent employees and contractors in a vast array of categories ranging from “Most Improved BMI” to “Best Emergency Squad of the year”. The evening was a huge success since it instilled a new sense of motivation.

MILLION TREE PROJECT

ONE FOR THE FUTURE

ince the inception of time, trees have furnished us with two of life’s essentials, food and oxygen. Today the world is facing environmental problems. Global warming and ozone depletion are burning issues and the solution to these problems lie in planting more trees. Amongst all the countries in Asia, Pakistan has one of the highest deforestation rates and one doesn’t need to be a genius to realize that there is nothing more important than planting more trees.

To play its role in the environmental sustainability of our country, EFERT took upon a challenge of planting One Million Trees by the end of 2019. This project was intiated at Safari Park near Mirpur. Phase-1 of this project, which consisted of planting Half a Million trees, has now been completed and land preparation for Phase-2 of this project is in progress. Trees are the prime source of environmental purification and beautification and this is our gift to our future generation.

Pacing up with the technology - SAHARA “E-Learning – a technology that enables transformative learning.�

A

team from SABAQ foundation visited Sahara school along with Engro Foundation team on 17th November to observe academic courses for Grade 4 and 5 with prime focus on use of technology. Students were using especially designed tablets that included videos and exercises to enhance learning experience on various subjects including science and literature. The children were not just fascinated but also excited to use this new piece of technology which would enable them to become fast learners. Team was highly appreciative to see children's response and efforts of the teachers to make their lessons more effective.

tudents of Sahara were invited to participate in an Intra School competition held in Daharki arranged by Engro College in which 144 students and 36 delegations participated from different districts and schools.

Students from Sahara school participated in various events including Declamation contest, Tri gear, Treasure hunt and Talent show. The students went roaring into the competition and won the hearts of the audience and a few accolades along the way. Husnain Raza and Haseeb Ullah Ansari bagged the 1st position for the Talent Hunt.

Quarter of Learning – the I&E Way “Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better”

T

he Transitional Training Model in I&E has progressed at an excellent pace with over 30 planned sessions. Team I&E is the forefront of embracing a positive transition and TTM proved to be a true reflection of it.

I&E celebrated the last quarter of 2018 as the “Quarter of learning”. These months saw initiatives to improve effectiveness and quality of training. Cross-functional trainings were held with other teams including Process Engineering & Operations to improve

understanding of critical equipment like Mass Spectrometer. An annual review of TTM Modules was done and Module for Plant-02 ESD was revised after system replacement. A series of trainings for advanced modules by OEM like GE and Veterans at site was the hall mark of this whole exercise.

The revision of JQPs to improve the quality of learning for NMPTs was also launched.

Management Skills Interventions 2H 2018 2018 concluded on a high note, with the execution of three distinct management skill interventions, customized to the needs of our organization.

Effective Leadership Program for CL 24 employees was held in August, focusing on facilitating our people’s transition into future managerial roles. This training revolved around the competencies of Team Leadership and Developing Others and was developed keeping the principles of human psychology and modern leadership practices in view. The relevance of content got our participants fully immersed in the program and generated high enthusiasm in learning effective leadership practices.

Moreover, the

Business Simulation Program for CL 25 – 27 employees proved to be a major highlight for TTM in 2018. The program addressed the competencies of Entrepreneurship & Influencing Stakeholders. Developed in collaboration with Consultant Gordon Cousins from Business Today, South Africa, the board-based simulation was the first ever board game designed to represent the end to end value chain of Engro Fertilizers. Cross functional participation enabled our employees to think beyond the scope of their current roles and expanded their thinking into functional domains they had not been exposed to earlier. The program also introduced certain financial concepts to aid our employees to speak a unified business language for better understanding of strategic decision making.

Lastly, the

Business Impact Project for CL 23 employees was developed to address the competencies of Intellectual Capacity and Achievement Orientation. Based on innovation and design thinking, the training was focused on channelizing participant’s mental energies towards new idea generation, business development and honing intellectual mettle. During the 3-day program, participants prepared and presented novel business projects to members of the senior management, competing for mock management approval to fund their projects. They were evaluated on the depth of research, innovation and design thinking concepts that they applied.

With each intervention being unique in its approach and customized to the needs of Engro Fertilizers, TTM Management Skills programs have been successful in setting the stage for high quality programs in the future.

upont Audit of Marketing division was carried out in August 2018. This was a very Comprehensive audit covering field location warehouses, Zonal office & interviews with employees at all levels. Marketing Division achieved a rating of Excellence level

Dupont Rating 4 which signifies the passion and commitment our employees have towards safety.

An overall score of 4 is reflective of strong PSM Cultural systems and compliance with opportunities for continuous improvement.

As per Dupont Audit report EFERT Commercial Division has demonstrated strong PSM Cultural systems in place with improvements compared to previous years.

Zorawar was initially launched in a 45.5Kg bag and discontinued almost 8 years ago. With its good brand recall & ground breaking activations, commercial division has successfully relaunched a 50 Kg packaging of Zorawar brand.

A

fter the successful re-launch of Zorawar, placement of product with dealers, merchandizing of dealer outlets backed by planned powerful brand development campaign, a need was felt to reach-out to our ultimate consumer the farmers. To achieve desired results, our Sales and CSD teams collaborated for the Zorawar brand development in potato areas.

A detailed farmer meetings plan was chalked out with CSD in entire Potato Areas of Faisalabad, Lahore, and Multan Zones, and execution is in progress.

The collaborated brand building efforts, between Sales & CSD helped our team to invade farmer markets, building on EFert’s fertilizers decades’ old footing in the agriculture landscape of country.

We are confident that this initiative will help both divisions in building strong relationships with our end users, and further improve our corporate brand image with in agriculture community.

Engro Baithak Initiative

ear 2018 was a year of building strong customer relationships.

Engro Baithak is a platform that features in engagement with our business partners (Dealers) through a structured approach to create a conducive environment for both stakeholders. In order to make this initiative more productive, we created a synergy amongst Sales, SFB & CSD, providing one platform to all the departments to interact with the business partners and develop a long term and sustainable relationship with them. This would help them in improving their business through knowledge sharing before the start of cropping season. 23 sessions were held before major crop seasons and covered 1500 dealers nationally.

Zingro Inaami Express

Z

ingro Inaami Express (ZIE) is a Lucky Draw Scheme developed for SFB dealers who purchased Zingro during the core rice season (May – August). Unlike other years, this year the events were divided amongst three zones i.e North, Central and South. The three events took place in Faisalabad, Multan and Shikarpur during the month of November.

This created a strong wave of motivation amongst our dealers for active participation and everyone left with a big smile on their faces.

The prizes ranged between 355 cash prizes of ten thousand rupees to 4 Suzuki Mehrans with Dubai and Umrah tickets. This event surpassed the dealers expectations and will be remembered for the years to come.

Basic Management Training Course 2018

T

his year the BMTC initiative was organised and hosted by a new team; Daneyal Adeeb and Shabih ul Hasnain Bukhari from Commercial Excellence Department. The session was held at Ramada Creek hotel from 10th December to 14th December followed by an interactive session and dinner at Kolachi restaurant.

The array of 35 participants were from all nooks and cranny of the commercial division. New and old representatives from Sales, SFB, CSD, Distribution, ITD, R&D and Audit departments were invited for the training.

Presentations were made from all departments of commercial as well as cross division from legal, audit, HR etc. The Purpose of the BMTC has always been to equip new employees with indepth technical knowledge about agricultural crops, farming & irrigation practices.

The 5-day training consisted of many individual quizzes and presentations to keep the audience engaged. At the end of the session candidates heading back to their respective terrains felt a lot more knowledgeable and engaged with the company!

ontemporary challenges in Fertilizer Sector, cut throat competition and the ideology of placing Dealer at the heart of business allowed EFERT to revolutionize its approach of connecting with our business partners. For the first time we replaced Dealer Relationship Management with a boundary less customer servicing Management Behavior. Under the prudent

supervision of Mr Nadeem Sajjad (DAK), Distribution Team took the initiative to launch a first ever marketing training program for our Warehouse Incharges, which we are confident will lead to better customer relationships.

DAP DIS Lucky draw

AP DIS was designed for the first time to increase engagement with our dealers. First ever lucky draw held in Karachi had dealers from all over Pakistan invited for a grand ceremony at Movenpick Hotel. Grand prize for this lucky draw was a Toyota Fortuner. Transparency of the process resulted in everyparticipant’s satisfaction deciding the winner. The lucky

winner of Toyota Fortuner was Aryan Fertilizers from Daharki Zone. Sequential events were held in all zones where other qualifiers were invited and prizes of 5 Toyota Corolla, 5 Suzuki Mehran & 25 Motorbikes were given through the same transparent lucky draw mechanism. This eventually resulted towards increased dealer engagement and interaction.

Safety Week Mega Safety Week executed for truck drivers & contract staff focusing to improve their knowledge in safety.

First in Industry to certify Regular Driver for Defensive Driving

Free Eye Camp for Drivers & Community

First time National Highway and Motorway police carried a two days Defensive Driving course for our regular drivers and initially 25 drivers certified after a two day training. It was a popular feature which both the contractors and drivers appreciated.

A one day free eye camp for truck drivers and transporters was also a first-time feature. It covered checking eyesight as well as minor treatments. People of adjacent communities including ladies also benefitted.

First Aid and Emergency Handling Workshop

Vehicle Maintenance Workshop in Collaboration with PTN & FAW

Rescue 1122 was also a first-time feature of the program especially invited from Punjab.

Although 1122 services are restricted to Punjab only, on our request they agreed to do a session on emergency handling and first aid training related to road accidents.

A very interactive session was held during which vehicle fitness related issues were discussed at length & drivers were given tips on fitness guidelines and trip efficiency.

Independence Day of Pakistan

Zarkhez plant employees celebrated the 72nd Independence Day for Pakistan with traditional zeal, fervor and a renewed commitment to give back to Pakistan.

The patriotic employees vowed to give back to the globe by a tree plantation activity. Later, pitcher irrigation pilot project was launched which will not only save water for the times to come, but will also provide controlled water supply to the plants for better & healthier growth.

In the end employees raised slogans for a cleaner and healthier Pakistan and dispersed after making a pledge to play their part in improving the eco-system of our beloved country.

Zarkhez Mega Turnaround 2018

T

he Turnaround 2018 was the biggest in the history of Zarkhez Plant. The mammoth activity was spread over 24 days round the clock jobs. 13 IP equipment were procured both locally and internationally & were installed by our in-house team along with an average of 400+ workers per day at site spanning over 109,000 manhours. The entire operation was carried out safely with zero injury and was completed 6 days ahead of plan.

The equipment addressed in the TA included all major machines starting from Pre-Cooler, Dryer, Granulator. Bucket Elevators & Conveyors to massive works like cyclones, scrubbers and furnace which made a complete turn around at the plant ensuring better efficiency with safer operations.

Zarkhez Surfaces on OHIH First Ever Audit of Zarkhez Achieved Level 3.2

arkhez Team kicked off the year with a will and determination to rigorously improve the OHIH parameters at Zarkhez site.

After detailed discussions, Dr. Tahir Barlas, a known name in OHIH, was assigned the task to conduct the gap analysis, train the employees and carry an audit of the facility to find out our position on OHIH at Zarkhez Plant. Hygiene audits, trainings, signage improvements,

OHIH of awarenessof contractors & workers, and Health Risk Assessment trainings were some of the key things which were actively worked upon to bring Zarkhez Plant to international standards.

P&MM launches NEW KPIs!!

he Procurement & Material Management Department launched Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), in 3Q 2018. The Foreign & Local Procurement and Warehouse Teams studied their existing KPIs and developed improved indices after conducting a detailed Benchmarking and study in collaboration with Hashtag Consulting.

The new KPIs focuses on key areas of improvement that are instrumental in gauging the progress of respective sections. The KPIs became effective September 2018, and the ‘KPI Report’ is issued to all internal stakeholders, on a monthly basis.

7th Floor Revamp – Bringing Change

E

fert HO Admin has always taken initiatives to improve employee well-being and bring improveto office aesthetics. In the light of the above, Efert Admin team conducted a redesigning drive that spanned over a period of 2 months and resulted in improved ambience.

The 7th floor now boasts a Coffee Room that provides employees an informal sitting space & the Aquarium installed at the reception waiting area adds more life and color to the office.

018 has been a phenomenal year for Local Procurement Team where many milestones were achieved EFERT’s Local Procurement Team managed to make substantial savings in procurement of WPP Urea bags and in DAP bags.

A Six Sigma Black Belt Project was initiated to optimize specifications of Urea, DAP and all variants of Zarkhez bags. The project involved various stakeholders from across Manufacturing & Marketing Division. Multiple avenues of cost savings were explored and after detailed pilot runs and deliberation, we were finally able to alter the ‘Urea Bag’ Specifications reducing our per bag cost by Rs. 1.24.

In the fourth quarter, after a sudden upsurge in exchange rates, and anticipation of rupee devaluation, the team carried out an auction of 53 Million Bags and locked the best possible WPP Urea Bag price for the entire 2019.

The strategy of locking the Urea Bag price was taken in the true spirit of Engro’s values ‘Innovation’ and calculated ‘‘Ri Riskk Taking’ ‘Innovati Taking’ and this has resulted in unprecedented savings from the Local Procurement Team.

Vendor Action Plan

T

The Procurement Team took a head on challenge and initiated a detailed In-house study on the Spend Analysis for Engro Fertilizers. This detailed study included the spend trend for the last 5 years. Intensive data compiling and analyzing was done by the team and was organized to make it useful information for Business Intelligence.

This in-depth study enabled us to identify major vendor pockets where Efert spend was concentrated and pushed us to look for alternate vendors / options to break the existing monopoly.

This led to the meticulous effort of devising the detailed Vendor Action Plan.

We applied the 80-20 Rule and focused on those 20% of our vendors who had 80% of Efert spend. 16 major vendors /suppliers were identified and worked upon with robust and tailored action plans. In addition, an intensive industry benchmarking and market research was also conducted to identify alternate options for these vendors.

The intent of this exercise was to challenge the status quo and to do business differently, and we are proud that these efforts led to substantial savings.

The P&MM, Admin & HSE(HO) department gathered together on a Two - day Outbreak at Arabian Sea Country Club Karachi , held on November 30 - December 1, 2018.

T

he Out-break agenda included a Divisional Strategy Session by the senior management as well as short sessions addressing areas of improvement highlighted in the HR Connect & Employee Engagement Survey 2017-2018.

Numerous activities were planned emphasizing team-building, conflict resolution and breaking barriers. The values were also reinforced through a series of activities, and thought provoking sessions.

The Outbreak proved to be highly engaging and brought together two geographically separated teams together which resulted in a much more engaged P&MM Team!

An army is only victorious if the front running soldiers are successful. In our commercial department the sales officers, distribution officers, sales and merchandising officers, zonal coordinators, detailing officers & crop science territory sales officers are the front runners out in the field and zones, bringing back results and revenue for the company!

These are the individuals that make it happen!

ur objective from the six-sigma front is to train as many of these individuals with yellow belt level training as we can. The essential objective is to equip them with enough knowledge and expertise to initiate PIT projects (process improvement teams) and smaller projects that result in making our processes leaner, more efficient, satisfying our customers further by better servicing and increasing company profits by cutting costs or generating extra revenue.

This year we brought a healthy twist

to the yellow belt training program by increasing the program to two days instead of one. And changing the material from a historically used presentation to a new online training interactive program that delivered knowledge in a more collaborative manner with lots of examples, quizzes, questions and case studies. We also shed away all the tricky complicated statistical tools and kept the program simple to understand, making it more result oriented and comprehendible.

A complete nationwide sweep was

made to train a maximum number of yellow belts from the field with all four departments of sales, distribution, SFB and crop science division along with zonal staff coordinators. This was followed by a session at Karachi with head office CSG candidates ranging from audit, procurement, distribution, SFB planning, commercial excellence, F&P, accounting and HR department.

We were able to qualify a colossal group of 67 yellow belt certified professionals versus a plan of 30! and have laid a strong foundation for future green belt professionals.

The trainings and developments have resulted in a large array of projects bringing in huge savings for the company and a wide range of ideas generated for new projects!

oodbyes are never easy, they are always painful, and it gets even harder when meeting again is doubtful. However life is a journey, Ruhail Muhammad was an inspirational leader at Engro Fertilizers and all the young optimistic go-getters looked up to him for advice. After steering numerous mega projects at Engro Fertilizers, Ruhail bid farewell to the company on 24th November’18 in an alluring ceremony held in Daharki to glance upon his countless achievements.

The continuity of farewells did not end there due to the charismatic personality of RM and another farewell was given by Zarkhez site.

The ceremony was ornamented by the in house talent where different poems and songs were dedicated to him. In the end a collage was presented to RM.

RM Farewell 23rd November was the day that Engro bid farewell to a man, who made invaluable contributions to the Engro community for over 2 decades; Ruhail Mohammed. The event was thematically organized, titled “Mera Safar”, where Ruhail’s achievements and memories were celebrated and cherished together. The Castle at Global Marquees was decorated with Ruhail’s accolades panelled all across the hall and a fabricated starry night ambience set for a grand evening.

The event started with the masters of ceremony, Wajihah Shaikh and Riaz Nazim, opening the Montage where Ruhail’s memories and astounding moments were shared as a gesture to encapsulate all that he had done during his time with Engro. The event was attended by the whole Engro community including Mr. and Mrs. Chairman, President of Engro Corp, Mr. Ghias Khan and the executives from different subsidiaries. Ruhail also took the opportunity to thank all his colleagues and bosses throughout his career and was sent off with a memento and two beautiful paintings presented to him and his wife by Mr. and Mrs. Chairman. The evening concluded with a scrumptious dinner & a musical performance by Stereonation.

ung Mela is synonymous of cultural bonding of loving land of Sindh.

On December 29, 2018, Engro Fertilizers Limited organized an event which was inaugurated by Assistant Commissioner, Daharki.

Commissioner Sukkur graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Cultural programs, folk music and other attractions lavishly regaled the crowd. Stalls of handicrafts, handmade items, books, ornaments , toys and beauty care products were there to let people go on a little shopping.

Many of the stalls were set up by the beneficiaries of livelihood projects as part of Engro CSR Program, proving its success and effectiveness.

There were various games and activities like face painting, jumping castle and magic show, which kept children’s and their parents busy throughout the day. Participants also enjoyed a variety of food items, embracing pleasure and value of great flavour. This event depicted the vibrancy & strong bond of community with Engro Daharki . It was Bigger and Better than before.
