OUR WORK IN THE UK (A – Z)

BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL UK Each year, UJIA offers over 350 young adults aged 19– 26 a free educational tour of Israel, reconnecting British Jews with Israel, their culture and identity.

On Birthright Israel UK, participants will travel the country and immerse themselves in the culture, history and politics of our dynamic homeland.

ABOUT UJIA For nearly 100 years UJIA has been building meaningful connections between the UK Jewish community and the people of Israel. Generation after generation of UK Jewry have benefited from UJIA programmes that nurture lifelong connections to Israel, whilst in Israel itself, our educational and welfare initiatives impact tens of thousands of people each year.

We deliver and support educational programmes to enhance knowledge about Israel from childhood to adulthood. We create immersive experiences to connect British Jewry with the Israel of today and we invest in Israel to strengthen vulnerable communities.

UJIA: OUR PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES – ABOUT UJIA

UJIA ETHIOPIAN BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROGRAMME This programme aims to connect British B’nei Mitzvah aged children to the Israeli-Ethiopian community living in Kiryat Bialik. It allows young people to explore their Jewish and personal identity and builds long-lasting meaningful connections between British and Israeli Jews from different backgrounds. This year, the programme has impacted 410 children and their families in Israel and the UK.

UJIA ISRAEL FAST TRACK

ISRAEL TOUR

A flagship Israel engagement programme for 40 Sixth Formers across the UK. Over eight months, the programme develops leadership skills and in-depth Israel knowledge for the next generation of communal leaders.

UJIA Israel Experience provides the infrastructure for Youth Movements to take over 1,100 16 year-olds annually on an inspirational, educational and memorable tour of Israel. UJIA also provides financial assistance through bursaries, to help ensure that young people do not miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

ISRAEL GET CONNECTED

UJIA JAMS (JEWISH ACTIVITIES IN MAINSTREAM SCHOOLS)

This conference is designed to help Year 12 students in Jewish schools to engage with Israel in a way that is relevant and helps to support them in their future lives. Jointly organised with Masa Israel Journey UK, it reaches 350 – 400 students annually, offering bespoke programmes and activities. Speakers and topics cover the full spectrum across the Jewish and Israeli religious, cultural and political community.

UJIA JAMS provides Jewish and Israel education for 1,500 children in 26 mainstream schools through 600 educational and inspirational sessions every year. This programme gives Jewish students the opportunity to gather regularly for informal education.

MASA ISRAEL JOURNEY UK

RESHET

UJIA works closely with Masa Israel Journey UK, who offer short to long term study and internship opportunities in Israel for young people aged 18 –30 annually.

Masa offers uniquely transformative experiences, which empower participants to develop as individuals, while also developing a robust global professional network that includes Israelis and Jews from around the world.

This hub supports 2,000 UK Jewish youth workers every year, providing professional development, strategic planning and high quality resources, helping secure our community’s future leadership.

UJIA MAGIC MOMENTS

ONWARD ISRAEL

This annual delegation of about 60 Israeli teenagers from Israel’s periphery, impacts over 3,000 children and adults across eight UK communities during Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut.

UJIA is helping to provide subsidies for UK participants of Onward Israel.

This programme helps to support young professionals, aged 19– 27, with six to ten week career development programmes, which build their skills and enhance their CVs through immersive experiences in Israel such as internships, academic study and fellowships.

UJIA SCHOOL-TO-SCHOOL PROGRAMME

As part of UJIA support for Youth Movements, we enable madrichim (leaders) to safely take on responsibility for the participants in their care and run effective programmes. Each year, we provide training for over 500 Youth Movement leaders, including training Israel Tour madrichim, ensuring quality informal education for 8,000 children and young people.

By twinning 14 schools in the UK with 14 schools in Israel, over 8,000 children each year, enjoy an impactful, ongoing relationship that bridges the geographical gap. The participants learn from, with and about each other – strengthening their Jewish identity and enriching school curricula.

YOUTH MOVEMENT GAP YEAR PROGRAMMES

UJIA funds Israel engagement activities through UJS, which supports up to 8,500 Jewish students across 60 Jewish societies annually.

This gives young people the confidence and tools they need when discussing Israel.

Each year, over 70 young people participate in a Youth Movement gap year in Israel. Graduates play a key role in helping to shape the identity of successive generations of Jewish young people. UJIA provides financial assistance through bursaries, ensuring young people do not miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

YOUTH MOVEMENTS UJIA supports UK Jewish youth movements with vital funding to ensure their doors stay open. UJIA funds 12 youth movements and provides educational support, reaching over 8,000 children and young people annually.

OUR WORK IN ISRAEL (A – Z)

UNION OF JEWISH STUDENTS (UJS)

AL SANABEL This catering social enterprise provides employment for women who live below the poverty line, some of whom are single mothers.

The catering factory makes healthy school meals for children who are entitled to receive a hot meal a day under Israel Ministry of Education guidelines. A portion of the profits from the business are fed back into the local community.

MERCHAVIM – ARAB TEACHERS IN JEWISH SCHOOLS This year, UJIA is supporting the integration of 743 teachers into 225 schools, teaching English, Maths and Science, while promoting a cohesive society in Israel.

CARMIEL CHILDREN’S VILLAGE Carmiel Children’s Village provides a warm and loving home to over 200 neglected children at risk. UJIA is providing refurbished housing for 40 children to help provide a safe and nurturing atmosphere and is funding a life skills educational programme to give the children the best possible chance in life.

DARCA DANCIGER HIGH SCHOOL A dilapidated school in Kiryat Shmona is being transformed by UJIA funded rebuilding and renovations, giving 1,200 pupils the educational environment they deserve, conducive to educational achievement. UJIA is also supporting educational enrichment initiatives at the school.

THE EQUALIZER PROGRAMME UJIA helps to improve the school performance of 988 disadvantaged Jewish and Arab children this year, with after-school academic support, as well as teamwork skills, through a football programme. We support 64 Jewish and Arab football teams of disadvantaged children aged 10 –12. They benefit hugely from the discipline and teamwork skills the programme promotes.

UJIA ETHIOPIAN BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROGRAMME This programme aims to connect the Israeli-Ethiopian community living in Kiryat Bialik with British B’nei Mitzvah aged children. This year, over 90 families and children have been supported educationally, socially and psychologically. Graduates have the skills and confidence to be involved in student councils and leadership development programmes, and liaise with the local municipality to help organise community wide events.

HATZOR SCHOLARSHIPS

KIBBUTZ ESHBAL

MA’ASE

UJIA is providing educational scholarships to 97 graduates of the AMIT-Mishcon School based in Hatzor, a remote part of Northern Israel. These students are now able to continue their learning and improve their lives.

This kibbutz provides a residential sanctuary for at-risk 15 –18 year-olds.

UJIA is supporting young people on their road to recovery through learning and therapeutic activities, including caring for animals.

Through UJIA support this year, 165 young Israeli-Arabs, aged 18 – 21 complete a year of volunteer service to improve their social mobility and integration.

KIRYAT BIALIK COMMUNITY CENTRE

UJIA MAGIC MOMENTS

NETIV TEFACHOT

This annual delegation of about 60 Israeli teenagers, impacts over 3,000 children and adults across eight UK communities during Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. The programme promotes the learning of English and develops futures leaders. Participants have stayed in the Galil to help strengthen their communities and are studying at UJIA supported institutions, including Western Galilee College, Erez College and Tel-Hai College.

This year, UJIA is funding new dormitories for 96 orthodox Jewish students from poor neighbourhoods, who live in this small community.

Netiv offers learning, national service and community projects.

UJIA is currently supporting 187 Charedi (ultra-orthodox) men and women to receive workplace training through educational and vocational scholarships. This project is helping to alleviate a population with a 47% unemployment rate, allowing families to achieve financial stability whilst contributing economically to wider Israeli society.

UJIA is committed to improving the absorption of Ethiopian Jews and advancing their integration into Israeli society. This project is to help with the construction of a new community centre in Kiryat Bialik to provide a forum for cultural, communal and social activities for Ethiopian residents and to strengthen the connection between the veteran population of Kiryat Bialik and the newer Ethiopian olim (immigrants).

MEROM HAGALIL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME UJIA is transforming life for 1,100 children in a remote region who do not have the kind of opportunities that other children take for granted.

In this area, unemployment is high and school attainment is lower than in the centre Israel. After the successful completion of building an education and community campus, UJIA continues to support five primary schools to promote educational achievement.

SHLOMI HIGH SCHOOL This year UJIA is supporting technology education for 226 children. This specialist learning gives disadvantaged pupils the opportunity to excel in a field normally dominated by Israel’s urban centre.

Si3 (SOCIAL IMPACT INVESTMENT INITIATIVE) Si3 provides an alternative method to traditional grant giving. Using a model of returnable financing, each pound or shekel can be reinvested to enable scalable solutions in improving education, employment and community development in Israel. One of the first projects to benefit is an organisation providing micro loans to the Ethiopian community, so they can start their own businesses.

GALILIUM STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS)

TEL-HAI COLLEGE

UJIA is a key funder of STEM programming across 15 municipalities, reaching nearly 11,225 participants in 186 schools each year. The programme boosts student participation and attainment, giving them a better chance in life.

A centre of excellence for social and computer sciences and biotechnology, Tel-Hai College is also the largest employer in the Upper Galil. UJIA is funding 66 scholarships this year, helping recipients who would otherwise not be able to complete their studies.

Tel-Hai College contributes to the quality of life in northern Israel, attracting and retaining new residents driving economic and community development.

TEACH FIRST

TSOFEN

UJIA supports this national programme and currently funds 50 highly talented teachers, to educate and inspire deprived children in underprivileged schools in the Galil.

This year, UJIA has supported 337 highly qualified Israeli Arab young people into local jobs in technology, increasing their chance of financial independence and integration.

WESTERN GALILEE COLLEGE After successfully co-funding the creation of the Sir Harry Solomon School of Management and the Kaye Family Building, UJIA continues to support 99 disadvantaged students through scholarships at this diverse college. We are also helping with the construction of much-needed student accommodation.

INDIVIDUALISED LEARNING AT WESTERN GALIL HIGH SCHOOL UJIA is supporting 300 pupils aged 14 –18 at Western Galilee Regional High School through 1:1 academic help, raising academic attainment.

YOUTH FUTURES Trained mentors work as trusted guides to help students improve school performance, strengthen social integration and overcome barriers to success. This year, UJIA is supporting 300 children aged 6 –13 through this mentoring programme in the Galil.

ZEFAT COLLEGE SCHOOL OF NURSING UJIA is a major funder of a new School of Nursing, which will help to meet the local shortage of 6,000 healthcare professionals, and improve the health of the local population.
