The future of SAPA! lies largely with its volunteers. We are all working for the animals.

Volunteers are required to: -Submit an online application, which includes signing a Volunteer Agreement and a Release of Liability Waiver -Attend an orientation session Once you have completed your volunteer application, you will be able to register for orientation with your new volunteer account.

-Complete a City of San Antonio Volunteer Security Background Check -Ages 16 – 17 Provide a Release of Liability Waiver after youth and parent have attended volunteer orientation (youth and parent must each submit an individual online application) -Under the age of 16 Be supervised at all times by a parent or guardian Provide a Release of Liability Waiver after youth and parent have attended volunteer orientation -Attend position specific training sessions as required

by SAPA! -Possess a valid Texas driver’s license, if driving an SAPA! vehicle or personal vehicle for SAPA! animal transport -Treat animals in our care with kindness and concern for their welfare -Represent themselves and SAPA! in a professional manner and treat clients with respect

Volunteer Orientation Volunteer orientation is mandatory before you can volunteer for San Antonio Pets Alive! Once you have completed your volunteer application, you may register for orientation with your new volunteer account. At orientation, we go over the goals and policies of the organization, as well as explaining volunteer opportunities.

You will be required to complete a City of San Antonio Volunteer Security Background Check at orientation. We ask that if you can, please fill it out and bring it with you.

It may take up to 2 weeks for the background check to be returned. We will alert you when your background check has cleared and you may begin volunteering.

There is a non-refundable $15 fee to be paid at orientation that covers the cost of your San Antonio Pets Alive! t-shirt and training materials. All attendees must register for a spot at volunteer orientation, whether they are volunteering themselves or accompanying a minor.

Orientation is normally held in the Annex Building of the Animal Care Services facility located on Hwy 151.

Occasionally orientation will be held at the outdoor pavilion at the Paul Jolly Adoption Center (210 Tuleta Dr).

Please pay attention to the location at which your volunteer orientation will be held.

Group Volunteering From corporate groups wanting to team build to school groups seeking community service experiences, scheduling a volunteer session at our Paul Jolly Adoption Center is a great choice. Volunteer activities include walking dogs on trails in Brackenridge Park, teaching dogs basic obedience skills, socializing puppies, playing with cats, and performing various cleaning tasks. Volunteers will feel immediate gratification from their interactions with

our animals, in addition to knowing that the time spent makes our dogs and cats more adoptable. Please complete a Group Volunteer Application and someone from our Group Volunteer Team will be in touch with you soon!

Dog Walking 101 Dog Walking 101 is required for all volunteers prior to walking or socializing with any of our on-site dogs. It is normally held immediately following Volunteer Orientation. We cannot guarantee that this training will be held after every orientation, as it depends on the trainer’s availability. This training will focus on three primary skills: Body language How to properly read and describe a dogs body language Safety How to safely interact with a fearful dog, a dog showing threatening behavior and how to properly manage a leash Accidental Training How to avoid accidentally training dogs to be less adoptable by accidentally rewarding them for jumping up, mouthing, and barging through doorways.

Orphaned Kitten Feeders Want to help care for orphaned kittens in our neonatal nursery? Our nursery cares for approx 100 kittens and mom cats at any one time, and they require around the clock bottle feeding and care. Our nursery is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, if we don’t have enough volunteers to feed the kittens we can’t rescue them from the shelter. Nursery volunteers can sign up for shifts any time of the day or week, and we literally need hundreds of volunteers to keep the nursery running!

Fundraising Our organization is completely dependent on donations.

This committee assists in finding individual and business sponsors; researching and writing grants; overseeing donor recognition; develop and assist with fundraising events.

Alpha Sigma Tau

Alpha Sigma Tau (ΑΣΤ) is a national collegiate sorority founded on November 4, 1899 at Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University).

For over 100 years, Alpha Sigma Tau has been an active presence at universities and colleges across the country. From its beginnings in 1899 to today, the Purpose of the Sorority has been to promote the ethical, cultural, and social development of its members and members have maintained high standards of scholarship, friendship, and social grace.

Today, Collegiate and Alumnae Sisters continue to form strong and lasting bonds in Alpha Sigma Tau. The Sorority’s programs and social service projects continue to enrich the lives of many, helping Sisters contribute our share to the progress of mankind. We welcome new sisters and help each other grow to be contributing members of our community.

Sustainability in Action: Classes, Campuses, and Communities EcoExchangeEdu – San Antonio

On Friday, April 22, 2016, from 2 to 5 p.m., we will hold our second EcoExchangeEdu Showcase. This event highlights the sustainability initiatives and research in the classroom and beyond, with presentations by students representing local colleges and universities. The event will be held at San Antonio College’s EcoCentro (1802 N Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212).

We invite all students from San Antonio‐area colleges and universities to submit proposals to present at this exciting collaborative event. The deadline for proposal submission is Wednesday, March 30, 5 p.m.

Submissions may take any form, including (but not limited to) performance art, fine art, platform presentations, and poster presentations. Staged submissions (platform presentations, performance art pieces, etc.) should not exceed eight minutes in length. Students submitting static displays (fine art, posters, etc.) should anticipate being available during a designated period of time for Q&A and discussion with attendees if their submission is selected. Submissions will be juried and students will be notified about the selection results no later than one week prior to the event.

This year, the EcoExchangeEdu Showcase will be entitled “Sustainability in Action: Classes, Campuses, and Communities”. San Antonio’s institutions of higher education are preparing students to address the challenges of sustainability in their professional, civic and personal lives regardless of academic discipline.

Presentations that celebrate how sustainability education fosters transformation – a commitment to action where skills, attitudes and knowledge are applied to issues of sustainability – are of particular interest.

Your presentation proposal should include the following: 1. Title of Presentation – Please list academic discipline(s) embodied in the presentation if not apparent in the presentation title.

2. Description (limit 250 words) – Please explain clearly how the format is appropriate for your proposal, what you plan to do, and the connection to sustainability.

3. Detailed List of Technology and Special Needs – Please list all audio/visual requirements. Also include spatial and equipment requirements for performance/activity.

4. College or University Affiliation, Class Year, and Institutional Contact Information ‐ Your university e‐ mail address will be utilized to confirm your institutional affiliation.

5. Brief Introduction for Presenter(s) – This introduction may be used in promotional materials and for introductions at the EcoExchangeEdu Showcase. Submissions may be edited for length and uniformity in publication.
