Forgotten Heroes In the footsteps of the Polish liberators from Arromanches to Wilhelmshaven

Johannes Vande Voorde & Dirk Verbeke

Historical images and beautiful contemporary photography Includes impressive interviews with the last surviving veterans and powerful portrait pictures Follow the Liberation route of the Polish heroes who fought under the famous General Maczek

The Americans, British and Canadians liberated Western Europe, that is what we learned in school. But starting from the late summer of 1944, the Polish 1st Armoured Division, a division of 16,000 men, liberated town after town, village after village from the Nazis, from the Normandy beaches at Arromanches to Wilhelmshaven, the headquarters of the German Kriegsmarine. For more than a decade, Johannes Vande Voorde researched the tragic story of these forgotten Polish liberators. He tracked down the last witnesses and listened to their touching stories. Afterwards, he relived their journey with only his photo camera as his weapon. He looked for the traces of their Liberation route: a forgotten rifle in a tree, bullet holes in a church tower. The combination of magnificent portraits and photos, and historic images and explanation makes this book to a must-have for lovers of art photography and (war) history.

Johannes Vande Voorde is a Belgian professional photographer. His work has been published in The New York Times and Stern, among others. Dirk Verbeke is the chairman of the Association 1st Polish Armoured Division Belgium and the curator of the exhibition Armoured Wings that was exhibited in different Belgian cities, Gdansk and Warsaw.
