Abolafia's work made the pages of magazines such as People Magazine, Vanity Fair and Harper's Bazaar. Over a span of 50 years of work in the field of photography, he was able to build personal and intimate relationships with the most enduring stars of our age.

Portraits and landscapes of the world
Through a gallery of over one hundred magnificent and moving portraits, photographer Serge Anton showcases the diverse humanity of our planet. Nippon
Japan through the eyes of Philipp Franz von Siebold, 1832-1852
Japan was isolated almost completely from the West for more than two hundred years, from 1641 to 1854. One of the first Westerners to penetrate that barrier and reveal fundamental information about the country – and the Far East in general – was Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), a doctor from Würzburg in Germany. From 1823 to 1829 he lived on the small island of Dejima, a Dutch trading post in Nagasaki that was then the only point of contact between Japan and the West.
Full of ambition, Siebold was sent from the Dutch East Indies to Japan with the task of gathering as much information as possible about the country, its geography, its people, religion, customs and traditional costumes. Working with Japanese artists including Kawahara Keiga and Hokusai, Siebold embarked on an unprecedented visual and scientific project, culminating in the book Nippon.
In this publication of Nippon, we give Siebold’s work a new lease of life that lets us understand the Japan he saw. This edition includes all the original prints, while newly written essays and commentaries introduce the present-day reader to Nippon's most striking stories and details.
How wonderful that this remarkable book is now receiving the recognition - and the admiring readers - it has always deserved.
– Annejet van der Zijl, bestselling author and biographer of Franz von Siebold
This publication is the result of a collaboration with Leiden University Libraries. The editors are Kuniko Forrer and Matthi Forrer. Kuniko is a book historian who has worked at Japan Museum Siebold Huis since 2012. Matthi is an art historian and authority on Japan. He is currently a senior researcher on the Japanese and Korean collection at Leiden’s Wereldmuseum.

50 Manuscripts from Medieval Europe
For centuries, we have studied the works of Cicero and Horace. We have drawn inspiration from the Book of Job and the world-famous Aratea, the astronomical treatise from around 816 which became one of the most important illuminated Carolingian manuscripts. Our knowledge of the world is built upon the writings of classical and medieval poets, philosophers, theologians, and jurists. But without the diligent monks and scribes of the Middle Ages, these texts would not have been preserved. The modern world would be unimaginable without this transmission of written knowledge.
Written Treasures introduces you to the fascinating world of medieval manuscripts. Fifty remarkable manuscripts have been selected from the treasure trove of Leiden University Library - stunning masterpieces as well as hastily recorded works on second-rate parchment.
Thirty-eight international experts explore their content, appearance, design, and journey through generations of readers and owners to the present day. With beautiful images and accessible texts, this book is essential for history and book enthusiasts alike. It is a celebration of cultural heritage and a tribute to the extraordinary transmission of written knowledge across the ages.
André Bouwman is a curator of medieval manuscripts at the Leiden University Libraries. Irene O’Daly is a university lecturer at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society, specializing in book history, the history of science, and the reception of classical ideas and texts in the Middle Ages.

Post Mortem
Atlas of the autopsy
Let’s be honest, what most of us know about autopsies stems from TV crime shows. We immediately think of a lone forensic pathologist examining a pristine-looking body and determining the cause of death by the tiniest clue, all in record-time. The reality, of course, is starkly different.
In Post Mortem, we step inside a real-world mortuary. We stand alongside a forensic pathologist while she performs an autopsy, and we keep a meticulous record of our observations. Where was the body found? In what position? Are there any visible wounds, bruises, injection marks? What is the body’s temperature and what can that tell us? What can we deduce from the stomach’s contents, or the brain tissue, or the neck muscles? When, how and why did this person die?
Post Mortem is a fascinating visual guide into the world of forensics. With her stunning illustrations, the author is on a mission to demystify her profession, while questioning the modern day taboo that still surrounds death.
Babette Van Rafelghem is an artist who also happens to have a medical degree. Fascinated by the weird and wonderful human body, she is building a career as a forensic pathologist. Werner Jacobs is a professor in Forensic Medicine and Pathology at the University of Antwerp and a published author. He has been an expert witness in hundreds of high-profile criminal cases in Belgium.
