HEAD COACH MIKE DEE

12th Season • UW-LaCrosse (1979) Eight-Time Horizon League Coach of the Year The steady influence instilled in the University of Illinois at Chicago’s baseball program since the arrival of Mike Dee as head coach nearly 12 years ago has been evident across every facet, both on and off the diamond. There is no denying the success achieved on the field by UIC in the last decade under Dee’s watch. Entering the 2010 season the Flames have won nine consecutive Horizon League regular season titles and 10 overall, setting the stage for four conference tournament championships since 2003 and four NCAA Regional Berths in the last seven campaigns. With Dee on the bench, UIC ran off a streak of nine consecutive 30-plus win seasons, including seven straight campaigns of 35 victories or more. That is just another example that winning is a staple of Dee’s program. Many of those wins have come against some of college baseball’s premier programs in recent years; UIC has defeated a nationally-ranked foe on the road in three of the last four seasons, with Vanderbilt’s fifth-ranked 2008 squad the latest in a line of Top 25 teams, including No. 18 Ole Miss in 2006 and both No. 17 Long Beach State and No. 19 Tennessee in 2007, that have fallen to the Flames. Dee has made road dates against some the toughest teams in the country an essential portion of the Flames’ schedule each season, with Vanderbilt, Long Beach State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Texas, Tulane and various national powers on the slate. This year is no exception, with a series at Alabama setting the stage for showdowns against the likes of Baylor, Creighton and Georgia Tech. One of the keys Dee has emphasized within his program is being competitive on the regional level, and UIC has looked no further than the Big Ten in its journey to becoming one of the top programs in the Midwest. Dee’s UIC teams have gone 27-14 against Big Ten opponents in the past nine years, including a three-game sweep over Michigan in 2004, a two-game sweep of Iowa in 2005 and wins over Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State and Purdue in the last four seasons. Such success in the regional ranks have recently led Rivals.com national baseball writer Kendall Rogers to recognize UIC as the state of Illinois’ top baseball program. Taking on tough opposition during the regular season has helped UIC steadily improve its postseason results. UIC beat Long Beach State in the 2007 regional opener for the team’s first NCAA tournament win, and the Flames eliminated a tough Dallas Baptist team to chalk up their second-ever regional victory last year. Dee’s style of play has not only translated into consistent winning on the field; it has a lasting way of developing talent that has garnered an extensive array of awards in addition to opening up opportunities to play at the professional level. In the last 11 seasons UIC has featured 58 All-Horizon League selections, 13 league individual award-winners (including two conference player of the year honorees), 31

league all-newcomer team picks, 31 league all-tournament team players, four league tournament most valuable players, five NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team members and eight All-Mideast Region Team athletes. Well over 50 of Dee’s former players have gone on to professional baseball careers. UIC has seen at least one player move on to the pro ranks in each of the last nine seasons. Last year Dee saw pitcher Adam Worthington begin his pro career when he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while Tonya Altavilla (St. Paul Saints) and Derrick Miramontes (Southern Illinois Miners) inked independent ball deals. They follow Steve Carlson (New York Yankees, 2001), Curtis Granderson (Detroit Tigers, 2002), Wes Gilliam (Arizona Diamondbacks, 2002), Kevin Ryan (San Diego Padres, 2002), Kevin Nelson (New York Yankees, 2003), David Haehnel (Baltimore Orioles, 2004), Jordan DeVoir (New York Yankees, 2004), Ryan Gehring (Minnesota Twins, 2004), Mike Hughes (Anaheim Angels, 2004), Nelson Gord (Schaumburg Flyers, 2004), Bryan Russo (Schaumburg Flyers, 2004), Justin Johnson (Baltimore Orioles, 2006), Ryan Zink (New York Yankees, 2007), Zach Peterson (Kansas City Royals, 2007) and Kevin Coddington (Cincinnati Reds, 2008) as UIC products playing professionally since Dee’s arrival. One of the most notable professional products to develop under Dee and his staff while at UIC is current Major League Baseball star Granderson, the newest New York Yankee and a Flames outfielder from 2000-2002. Granderson became the first Flames player to start for a major league club on Opening Day when he manned centerfield for the Detroit Tigers in 2006. He played a big role during the Tigers’ magical 2006 campaign, helping bring an American League Championship and World Series berth back to Motown for the first time since 1984, and in 2007 he accumulated 23 homers, 23 triples, 38 doubles and 26 steals to become just the third player in major league history with 20-plus homers, 20-plus triples, 20-plus doubles and 20-plus stolen bases and the first since the legendary Willie Mays accomplished the feat in 1957. Possessing a charisma that has garnered national television and multimedia gigs with TBS and ESPN, and a generosity that has led to the formation of the Grand Kids Foundation that focuses on educational initiatives and bringing baseball back to the nation’s inner cities, Granderson, a 2009 AL All Star, is the perfect example of the type of good, genuine character that Dee always looks for in his student-athletes. The stability that Dee has cultivated within the team goes beyond winning

games, titles and awards; those are just some of the many successful components of his well-rounded program. Continuous upgrades in facilities have taken place since the first day of Dee’s tenure. Les Miller Field, the home park of the Flames, has undergone renovations ranging from a brand-new FieldTurf surface to new lights to refurbished dugouts and a list of improvements from 1998 to today, and much more is in the planning phases. The most recent renovations include new padding on the outfield walls and outfield signage in 2009. Just three years ago the Peggy Colvin Baseball Center for Excellence, a state-of-the-art 4,690-square-foot clubhouse exclusive to the UIC baseball team, was constructed. The Colvin Center houses a players locker room, coaches offices, a study laboratory, a video lounge and numerous other amenities. Last year the program welcomed a new indoor hitting facility, complete with up to six batting cages and FieldTurf, to the fold. Dee’s emphasis on steadiness to his players transcends their participation in the sport. An equal focus is placed on their dual status as both students and athletes, and if the accomplishments on the field are any indicator, each and every member of the UIC baseball team is also expected to give maximum effort to succeed in the classroom. The tools to fulfill school duties are provided through required study sessions, course performance monitoring and strong academic resources. The UIC baseball program has responded to such concentration on thriving in the classroom by constantly ranking among the athletic department’s top-performing teams in terms of grade point average, having an annual presence on the Horizon League’s academic honor roll and academic all-league team, and, most recently, attaining the UIC Athletic Department’s Male Academic Team of the Year award in 2007-08. Dee came to UIC after serving the previous 11 seasons as the pitching coach for the University of Minnesota, where his pitching staff was frequently one of the best in the Big Ten. Dee’s Minnesota staffs finished first or second in the conference for team ERA in seven of his last nine years as the Golden Gophers compiled a 405-254 (.615) record while registering a 190-101 (.653) ledger against Big Ten foes during his time in the Twin Cities. In 1997, Dee’s pitchers set a school record as they fanned 406 batters in 444.1 innings of work, led by 110 strikeouts from Mike Diebolt, a 1997 draft pick of the Detroit Tigers. Dee’s 1993 squad set a then-school record with 43 wins. Minnesota captured the Big Ten Tournament title four times during Dee’s tenure and earned the regular season championship twice, in 1988 and 1992. The Golden Gophers qualified for the NCAA Tournament seven times while Dee was an assistant, including as recently as 1998. In addition to his coaching duties with the Golden Gophers, Dee also served as the chief executive officer for the Minnesota Baseball Instructional School in Minneapolis. In that position, he handled all staff hiring/ training, marketing and scheduling and all business accounting. Under Dee’s direction, the business grew into one of the largest baseball camps in the United States. Dee began his coaching career at his prep alma mater, Aquinas High School in LaCrosse, Wis. As the school’s head coach for six years, his squads compiled a 100-26 record. Dee led Aquinas to six straight state tournament appearances and won the Wisconsin state title four consecutive years (1984-87). Following the 1987 season, Dee was named the Wisconsin State High School Coach of the Year before moving on to the Golden Gophers staff the next year. Dee, who is married to Ann, spent the first 17 years of his life raised in the Chicagoland area. He was an all-state selection as a high school junior at Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill., before finishing his prep career at

Aquinas, where he also garnered all-state honors. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he was a threeyear letterwinner and an NAIA All-America selection following his junior and senior seasons. Dee helped the Indians place fourth at the 1979 NAIA College World Series as a senior. Following his collegiate career, Dee played one season in the Milwaukee Brewers organization before entering the coaching ranks. The body of work of the UIC baseball program has earned Dee a long stretch of awards from his peers. He has garnered an unprecedented eight Horizon League Coach of the Year awards, winning the honor in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and in each of the last four seasons (2005-2008). Dee’s accomplishments at UIC, Minnesota and Aquinas gained him induction into the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in February of 2006, and he was also honored as the 2007 Division I College Coach of the Year by the Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago at the organization’s 62nd annual awards dinner in 2008. In addition to coaching, Dee has also served as a featured clinician at over 100 clinics nationwide, including the National Baseball Convention in 1991, 2001 and 2006. In December 2008 Dee inked a contract to stay at UIC through the 2013 season, ensuring that his steady hand will remain at the helm of the Flames.

ASSISTANT COACH SEAN McDERMOTT

12th Season • Lincoln Memorial (1993) The UIC baseball program has evolved into a perennial league champion and regional contender over the course of the last decade, and Sean McDermott has played an immense role in the Flames’ maturation process every step of the way. Entering his 12th season as an assistant coach at UIC, McDermott works primarily with UIC’s offense and defense, and the Flames have thrived in both departments during his tenure. Under McDermott’s guidance, UIC has flourished and improved at the plate each season. Last season their offense remained a force to be reckoned with due to a balanced mix of average (.297), on-base percentage (.383), power (36 home runs), patience (193 walks) and speed (47 stolen bases). Execution in key situations helped the 2008 NCAA Regional team, which ranked in the Top 20 nationally in both sacrifice flies (34) and sacrifice bunts (60). In 2007 the Flames exploded on the offensive end when it counted most, outscoring their opposition in the Horizon League Championship by a 35-10 margin with a team batting average of .417 and 23 extra-base hits in three games to sweep their way to a league title and NCAA Regional bid. In 2006 the Flames led the Horizon League in team batting average, home runs, stolen bases and on-base percentage while setting school records in runs per game and hits per game. Eight UIC players hit .300 or better that season to spur a final team batting average of .325. The Flames also hit 115 doubles and 53 home runs while averaging seven runs of offense per game. A year earlier the Flames set a school record for runs scored in a single season (429) while batting .307 with 120 doubles to key UIC’s road to an NCAA Regional berth. McDermott has also played a major role in the development of UIC’s infielders and catching corps, shoring up the defensive side of the Flames’ game while coaching the same players to success at the plate. While coaching UIC’s infielders and catchers, McDermott has helped the

2010 FLAMES BASEBALL

4

Flames consistently turn in one of the Horizon League’s top defenses. Last year UIC ranked second in the Horizon League lead in fielding percentage at .968 while allowing the fewest stolen bases (27) in the conference by far. Four of McDermott’s catchers at UIC (Nelson Gord, Justin Johnson, Kevin Nelson and Kevin Coddington) and two of his infielders (Jordan DeVoir and Bryan Russo) have moved on to the professional baseball ranks. McDermott served as the chief recruiter for the Flames during his first nine seasons and was instrumental in bringing the top-notch recruits that have played a big part in resuscitating a program that has gone on to produce well over 300 wins, nine Horizon League regular season titles, four Horizon League tournament crowns and four berths to the NCAA Regionals. McDermott joined the Flames in 1998 after serving three years as head baseball coach at Viterbo College in LaCrosse, Wis. During his stint with the V-Hawks, the squad set a single-season record for wins with 32 victories in 1997, followed by its first-ever appearance in the NAIA Regional Tournament in 1998. At Viterbo McDermott’s teams set several school records, including runs scored, home runs, walks, hits, RBI, and doubles. In 1997 he led Viterbo to 32 victories, which is the best single-season win total in the program’s history. Prior to his position at Viterbo College, McDermott served as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Princeton University for two seasons. Additionally, he was the head baseball coach at J. Frank White Academy and a graduate assistant coach at Lincoln Memorial University, both located in Harrogate, Tenn. McDermott began his collegiate playing career as a second baseman at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa before transferring to Lincoln Memorial University, where he played shortstop for two seasons. McDermott, a 1993 graduate of Lincoln Memorial, and his wife, Lois, have three sons: Jack, Joe and Thomas.

ASSISTANT COACH MIKE NALL

Seventh Season • Northwestern (2001) Mike Nall, a former hurler for both UIC and Northwestern, enters his seventh year on the Flames’ coaching staff as the pitching coach and his third as the team’s recruiting coordinator. Since Nall’s arrival, UIC has seen extensive success on the mound that has helped the Flames advance to three NCAA Regionals during his tenure. The Flames staff did not miss a beat in 2009. Nall helped talented Flames’ righty Adam Worthington transition from being one of the top relievers in the Horizon League to becoming the conference’s Pitcher of the Year as a starter. Worthington, who would go on to be selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2009 MLB Draft, posted the 10th lowest career ERA in program history (3.78), while tallying the eighth most strikeouts with 177 in the second most appearances (107). The 2009 staff posted the second lowest ERA in the Horizon League (4.62) and held opposing hitters to the second lowest batting average (.290). Pitcher Chris Kovacevich also joined Worthington on the All-Horizon League Team last season. In 2008, despite losing two of the program’s all-time winningest pitchers to the professional ranks before the year, Nall restocked UIC’s collection of pitchers with the likes of Derrick Miramontes and Mike Kool, a duo that anchored the starting rotation from start to finish, and helped the returning stable of veterans, such as Worthington, and young talent, such as emerging right-hander Peter Ifft, become a key ingredient to the Flames’ second straight NCAA Regional trip. Miramontes was named the Horizon League’s Newcomer of the Year, while Worthington was selected as the conference’s Relief Pitcher of the Year. Both were named to the All-League Second Team. Both Kool and Ifft were the Flames’ hottest hurlers as the season wound down, with Kool allowing just five earned runs in his last 29.1 innings and Ifft earning a spot on the league’s All-Tournament Team after winning the conference title game and before a stellar relief win over Dallas Baptist in an NCAA Regional contest. A recurring theme is UIC’s presence atop the Horizon League pitching statistical rankings under Nall’s guidance. The Flames once again posted the conference’s lowest earned run average and gave up the fewest total runs in the league.

Nall’s staff played a huge part in the Flames’ return to NCAA Regional play in 2007. UIC led the Horizon League with a conference-low 3.93 team earned run average and issued the fewest walks (142) while posting the secondhighest strikeout total (330). Behind the arm of Horizon League Pitcher of the Year Zach Peterson and the resurgence of Ryan Zink, UIC held the likes of top-ranked Vanderbilt and national powers Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Long Beach State at bay at the plate. Zink, who tossed a one-hitter in UIC’s first-ever NCAA Regional win on June 1, 2007 against Long Beach State, went on to sign with the New York Yankees after he was drafted by the Bronx Bombers, while Peterson moved on to the Kansas City Royals organization. The year before the UIC staff led the Horizon League with conferencelows in ERA, opponent batting average, runs allowed, earned runs allowed and walks. Led by Peterson, who won the league’s pitching Triple Crown by topping the charts in ERA, wins and strikeouts, the Flames ranked among the top 35 programs in the nation in team earned run average. In 2005 UIC pitching had a banner season behind the one-two punch of right-handers Zink and Peterson. The latter led the Flames with a 10-1 record, including wins in his last nine decisions, to go along with a team-best 3.31 ERA en route to All-Horizon League First Team accolades. Zink went 8-6 with a 3.78 ERA and a team-high 74 strikeouts to earn All-Horizon League Second Team honors and the Horizon League Tournament Most Valuable Player award. Both Peterson and Zink made the Horizon League AllTournament Team after the duo combined to shut down Milwaukee in the championship game. In 2004 three Flames hurlers earned postseason honors from the Horizon League under Nall’s tutelage. In 2004 Zink was named to the All-Horizon League First Team and All-Newcomer Team as a freshman after going 9-3 with 92 strikeouts in 95.2 innings pitched. David Haehnel, who pitched in the Baltimore Orioles farm system and for Team USA, earned All-Horizon League Second Team honors by finishing with a record of 6-3 with 92 K’s in 90 innings pitched, while teammate Tom Szalewski was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer squad after going 4-2 with an ERA of 2.76. In addition to his on-field and in-game coaching duties, Nall has served as the program’s chief recruiter since 2007. He also plays a big role in scouting, scheduling and various other areas of the program. Prior to joining the UIC coaching staff, Nall served as the pitching coach for Valparaiso in 2003. During his stint there, Nall helped the Crusaders improve their win total by eight, ERA by 1.77 runs, strikeout-to-walk ratio by one-third and opponent batting average by 46 points. Nall was also instrumental in the success of 2003 Mid-Continent Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year Tom Starck. Nall, a 2001 graduate of Northwestern, also brings professional experience to the squad, playing in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system after being selected in the 28th round of the 2001 draft.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH JOHN FLOOD Second Season • UIC (2006) Former UIC pitcher John Flood returned to his alma mater in 2009 to don the number 26 once again, this time as the Flames’ volunteer assistant coach. Flood, who was a key member of the 2003 pitching staff that guided the Flames to the school’s first-ever NCAA Regional berth, works primarily with the catchers and hitters in addition to serving as the first base coach. He handles the team’s pre-game activities and a variety of other areas on and off the field within the program. Flood is also the director of UIC Baseball Camps. A native of Mt. Vernon, Ill., Flood originally came to UIC in the fall of 2001 and, after sitting out the 2002 season as a redshirt, made a huge impact in his debut campaign in 2003. He went 6-2 in 13 appearances, starting 10 games, to go with a 3.68 earned run average during UIC’s Horizon League tournament title run and inaugural NCAA Regional appearance. After a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required surgery hampered his collegiate pitching career, Flood entered the coaching ranks. He spent the last two years with the St. Louis Pirates, one of the premier amateur baseball programs in the Midwest, as the club’s head coach and director of player development. During Flood’s tenure with the Pirates, the club saw unprecedented success in a variety of areas. It grew over 400%, and in two years over 50 of his players moved on to play college baseball. Around half of those players are competing at the Division I level, including current UIC catcher Nathan Orf. Three of his players were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including Jake Odorizzi, who was taken 32nd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. Flood graduated from UIC with a Bachelor of Science in finance in 2006.

HORIZON LEAGUE - Raise Your Sights Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2008-09, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms of athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). In all sports, all teams participate in their respective postseason League championships regardless of regular-season performance, allowing all student-athletes an opportunity to qualify for NCAA championships. The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field and the NCAA national office.

NEW INDOOR HITTING FACILITY Giving its student-athletes an even greater opportunity to succeed on the playing field, UIC opened in January 2009 a renovated indoor hitting facility. Located just upstairs from the Peggy Colvin Baseball Center for Excellence, the facility features FieldTurf, new lights and the capability to feature up to six separate batting cages.

LES MILLER FIELD

Home of the UIC Flames

Les Miller Field is named after the late Les Miller (left in photo above), a true pioneer in the baseball community in the city of Chicago who helped build the UIC program. Miller served as head coach of the UIC baseball team for 31 years from 1949-1979 and compiled over 500 wins and numerous championships and tournament titles. Originally named Flames Field, the facility was given its new name in a dedication ceremony on September 15, 1999, honoring the achievements and impact Les Miller made of the university, the baseball program and countless student-athletes.

Les Miller Field, the home of UIC baseball, was completed in the spring of 1996 with the first official game taking place on May 4, 1996 against the Wright State Raiders. The field is named after former baseball coach Les Miller, who coached at UIC for 31 years from 19491979 and compiled over 500 wins and numerous championships and tournament titles. Located south of the Physical Education Building at 901 W. Roosevelt Road, Les Miller Field is one of the best baseball complexes in the Chicagoland area. The lighted facility, which offers a breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline, also features an enclosed working press box, permanent seating for 1,000 spectators, an inningby-inning scoreboard, a concession stand and heated restrooms. There is also ample parking just southeast of the field and at the new Maxwell Street Parking Garage, located just east of the field at 1300 S. Union Ave. The dugouts have padded seating and backrests as well as storage under the benches and individual shelving space. A fan berm has also been installed down the right field line for additional seating. Recent additions to the field include the installation of FieldTurf, which will allow the field to be used more frequently and earlier in the season for optimum practice time. Other additions include an all-brick backstop complete with a 30-foot net, and the original chain-link outfield fence has been replaced with a solid wood fence painted with the UIC school colors, Navy Blue and Fire Engine Red. Field dimensions are 325 feet down the left and right

field lines, 395 feet to straight away center field and 375 feet in the gaps. The baseball field is part of a $9 million complex which includes a softball stadium and soccer field, as well as tennis courts. The athletics complex also features four intramural multi-purpose fields, three sand volleyball courts and a lighted jogging track around the facility. The neighborhood surrounding Les Miller Field is more vibrant than ever before. The field stands right in the middle of the thriving University Village, which features beautiful new housing and a variety of restaurants and shops that make for fun pre- and post-game stops. Les Miller Field is the center of baseball in Chicago, sitting right between the Windy City’s two Major League Baseball fields. Les Miller Field resides just 7.5 miles south of historic Wrigley Field and 3.3 miles north of U.S. Cellular Field, home to the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox.

IT CAN BE DONE Earning a college degree. Winning conference championships. Playing professional baseball. It takes hard work to accomplish just one of these goals. But it requires an even greater degree of commitment to attain all three. These former UIC baseball student-athletes have graduated, been a part of a league title team and went on to sign a professional contract.

It can be done.

The Great Cities Commitment engages university faculty and staff in numerous programs with community, corporate, government and civic partners to improve the quality of life in Chicago and other metropolitan areas around the world. At UIC, the world is at your fingertips. This university will challenge you to be your best, but you will find the limits of what you can achieve to be endless with the access to excellence that UIC provides.

UIC CAMPUS HOUSING IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL

With 10 residence halls scattered throughout the entire UIC campus community, campus housing is a university entity on the rise. Housing nearly 4,000 students, the residences available are situated on some of the finest real estate in Chicago. Minutes from downtown, Lake Michigan and the museum campus, the dormitories at UIC are a refreshing concept from the traditional high-rise facilities developed at many institutions. James J. Stukel Towers is the latest crown jewel in campus housing and opened its doors in the Fall of 2007. The Towers provide four towers of different heights to accommodate 740 undergraduate students. Each floor in the building has 30 residents, living in four-, five-, and eight-person suites consisting of single rooms, double rooms, bathrooms & living rooms. Half of the students living in the Towers will have single rooms. The strong community development residence life model is intended to provide coordination and support for a number of academic-related programs and living areas, with each two-floor community having a two-story common-area lounge and adjacent study lounge, and each of the Towers offering a penthouse lounge/piano room. The building also provides a full-service dining hall for residents, a snack bar/convenience store, student kitchens in common areas, computer labs, meeting & seminar rooms, student organization offices, and a 150-seat auditorium for special events. Stukel Towers is just one of many new residence facilities to open on the UIC campus in the last five years. A component of the university’s south campus expansion, Marie Robinson and Thomas Beckham Halls opened in 2003. The units house more than 750 students who inhabit spacious, apartmentstyle dorms, equipped with kitchens and private bathrooms. Across the east campus at the corner of Harrison and Halsted Streets is the Courtyard Residence Hall, along with Commons West, North and South. Built in 1988, these four halls house nearly 1,300 students. The Courtyard houses students in clusters, typically three doubles and two single rooms sharing a common bathroom, while the remainder of the halls offer a variety of living options. Every hall has a variety of lounges, meeting rooms, laundry facilities and spots for social and recreational activities. The convenient link to the campus unions allows for easy access to dining halls, bookstores and more.

UIC STUDENTS AND FACULTY AS ONE

While the challenges to the students at the University of Illinois at Chicago are often great, the campus provides vast resources to help students find the solutions to any roadblocks they may encounter to facilitate success both in and out of the classroom.

UIC students and faculty work together with a low studentto-teacher ratio, allowing for more opportunity for interaction between professors and students, building early relationships that foster academic success. The university continues to attract top national scholars to its strong faculty. UIC’s faculty have been recognized with many prestigious awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, Fulbright Distinguished Professorship, Guggenheim Foundation grant, National Science Foundation’s CAREER grant, Jonas Salk Lifetime Achievement Award, Society of Women Engineers’ Achievement Award and the United States Capitol Historical Society’s Freedom Award. UIC students win major national competitive awards, including a Rhodes Scholarship, Gates-Cambridge Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships, Fulbright Fellowships and Harry S. Truman Scholarships, among others. Former UIC right-hander Peter Ifft was a three-time UIC Male UIC is a member of three Regional Centers for Excellence Student-Athlete of the Year. PORT ACADEMIC CENTER -

A “HOME BASE” FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Time management is very important for a student-athlete. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, we recognize the unique demands of pursuing an academic degree and competing at the NCAA Division I level. Therefore, we offer the studentathlete a full-scale academic support program. At the heart of this program is the Port Academic Center. The Port Academic Center is a great support service provided by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to help a student-athlete excel in the classroom and attain a bachelor’s degree or other advanced degree. Services available within the center include advising, tutoring, scheduling assistance, eligibility monitoring, scholarship support and optional accommodations for individual and group study. The Port Academic Center is conveniently located on the lower level of the Physical Education Building. The 5,000-square foot facility serves as headquarters for the academic support staff and features a large public area for individual study, three smaller rooms for tutoring or group study, personal computer workstations linked to laser jet printers, a conference room, a reception area and private offices for counseling sessions. The Port Academic Center, with all of its resources, helps UIC meet the challenge of tightened NCAA academic requirements, providing a “home base” for the academic life of its student-athletes.

PORT ACADEMIC CENTER SERVICES Individual Study

The spacious and comfortable main study area is monitored from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday though Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Students can focus on their schoolwork without distractions of home or dorm life. Computers are available for student-athletes to use in the main study area.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available to student-athletes in nearly every subject area. The Athletic Department has an exceptionally qualified staff of tutors. Sessions are scheduled during convenient hours for the student and the tutor, and are held in the Center’s small study rooms.

Study Groups

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Student-athletes who wish to study together can reserve the small study rooms by checking with the receptionist outside the main study area.

Who is my college advisor? Students are provided with a list of advisors and their phone numbers to assist them in easily finding their advisor.

Advising

Each student-athlete is required to meet with an academic advisor once each semester. In addition, advisors are available year-round to assist students with specific questions. Athletic Department advisors give special attention to NCAA degree and eligibility requirements when assisting studentathletes.

What is the academic reputation of UIC in the job world? Academically, it is a Big Ten degree and on par with any of the top schools.

How will my major help me get a job? Current information is provided to students on this matter. Students are then referred to the career placement office, which will answer any questions they might have regarding a particular career.

Scheduling Assistance

Center advisors have established relationships with faculty in many colleges and can intervene on the student’s behalf when scheduling problems arise.

What do I do if I have a question about eligibility?

Scholarship Support

A one-on-one conference is initiated to go over questions regarding changing major, course selection and any other academic problems a student might have regarding effects on their eligibility.

43

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a student-athlete who has utilized the Center to significantly improve academic performance over the past year. Funding for this award is provided by the Port Endowment for Academic Excellence.

JIM

SCHMIDT Director of Athletics The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has seen unprecedented growth and reached new heights both on the playing field and in the classroom under the leadership of Jim Schmidt. Named UIC’s fourth director of athletics on January 24, 1997, Schmidt, who is in his 30th year of affiliation with UIC Athletics, quickly put together a department that could compete on a championship level, not only within the Horizon League, but on regional and national scenes as well. In Schmidt’s first 12 years, the Flames have captured more league titles than in the prior 15 years of NCAA Division I competition combined. Most recently, UIC garnered its second James J. McCafferty Trophy in 2006-07, the award honoring the most successful all-around athletic program in the Horizon League each season, and earned the league’s Men’s All-Sports Trophy just last year. Schmidt has also watched 42 of his teams represent UIC in NCAA postseason competition during his tenure. Among those NCAA tournament appearances were first-ever bids for men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and baseball. New history has been made each season under Schmidt, with the past year being no different. Highlighting the 2008–09 season were many memorable moments: • The UIC men’s soccer team won the Horizon League regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The Flames achieved a national ranking as high as fourth in the country in 2008 and featured the program’s first-

ever First Team All-Americans in goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy recognizing the nation’s best college soccer player, and Baggio Husidic, a Major League Soccer draft pick of the Chicago Fire in 2009. • The UIC women’s tennis team continued to dominate the Horizon League, capturing its 13th consecutive league title and making its 11th straight NCAA Tournament appearance while running its unbeaten streak against league foes to 113 and counting. The men’s tennis team once again found itself on the brink of a title, taking runner-up honors in the Horizon League for the fifth straight season. • The UIC men’s swimming and diving team won its first-ever Horizon League Championship under the guidance of Paul Moniak, who was named the Horizon League’s Coach of the Year. • The UIC men’s gymnastics team claimed its second all-time Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the National Men’s Gymnastics Championship meet for the first time since 2004. • The UIC baseball team won its eighth straight Horizon League regular season title and came within one out of securing its third straight Horizon League tournament championship and fifth NCAA berth in the last seven years. • Under first-year head coach and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Venturella and led by Horizon League Player of the Year Sarah Clynes, the UIC softball team won the Horizon League regular season championship and advanced to the Horizon League title game for the first time since 2005. • The UIC men’s basketball team, led by NABC All-District Team guard Josh Mayo and three-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection Scott VanderMeer, secured marquee road victories over Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt and Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Georgia Tech.

“At UIC, we are committed to excellence, both academically and athletically,” Schmidt said. “We will create an atmosphere that will assist each student in attaining lifelong experiences that will help them be successful.” In keeping with that commitment, UIC has continued to enhance the academic performance of its student-athletes under Schmidt. Last season, UIC student-athletes achieved an overall grade point average of 2.91, the second-highest overall semester GPA in the department’s history, with 121 reaching a 3.0 GPA or higher and 14 garnering a perfect 4.0 GPA. NCAA graduation reports list UIC Athletics’ graduation rates at 86% for all athletes who exhaust their eligibility. Under Schmidt’s direction in 1994, UIC Athletics instituted a Life Skills program designed to enhance the total student-athlete, with activities designed to improve personal, social and career development. Team builders, community service projects and leadership opportunities through the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) were also implemented. Schmidt has also played a key role in the local and national exposure of UIC Athletics. He helped expand radio coverage of UIC by reporters on ESPN Radio, WSCR, WGN, WBBM and other radio stations while increasing television exposure on ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Chicago and other local and national outlets. With a strong desire to win conference titles and earn regular appearances in NCAA postseason action, Schmidt has brought numerous conference championships to the UIC campus to aid in the task. For the first time ever, the Flames hosted the league’s men’s basketball championship in 1999 and 2000. UIC has also hosted conference tournaments in softball, baseball, soccer, cross country, gymnastics, women’s basketball, and swimming and diving, while the school also welcomed the NCAA softball regional championships to its field in 1999 and the NCAA softball super regional championships in 2005. An NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament First Round match was also played at Flames Field for the first time in the fall of 2006 and again in 2008. Flames administrative long-term plans are aggressive as well. In addition to major projects such as the first phase of the “Campaign for Athletics” that was implemented and the Flames Athletic Center fundrais-

ing campaign that was completed under Schmidt, UIC’s overall strategic plan outlines detailed improvements for scholarship funding; renovations to facilities, including the aquatics center; and improvements to indoor competition/practice facilities for baseball, softball, track, tennis and volleyball. Construction of the stadium portion of the baseball and softball complexes and renovations to the soccer field are also high on the capital program’s list of improvements. While serving as associate athletic director, Schmidt helped develop a broad-based athletic program headed by strong men’s and women’s basketball programs and rapidly improving, nationally competitive Olympic sports teams. He also saw UIC’s student-athletes gain national recognition for top academic achievements while the teams and coaches earned regional and national exposure through conference championships and NCAA postseason competition. Schmidt assisted during the many historical decisions that took place over the last several years, including changes in conference affiliation leading up to UIC’s current membership in the Horizon League. Schmidt recently finished up a term as chair of the league’s men’s basketball committee. He had previously served as the chair of the television and finance committees. Schmidt has also served on the championships/facilities committee, equity committee and executive council. Schmidt began his collegiate athletics career in the fall of 1980, serving one year as the pitching coach at Western Illinois University while earning his master’s degree in sports administration. Arriving at UIC in 1982, Schmidt served as a pitching coach on the Flames’ baseball staff before being named an assistant to the athletic director in charge of marketing/promotions and daily operations. From 1983–86, Schmidt handled all sports information duties as an assistant athletic director and assumed the title of associate athletic director in 1987. A 1979 graduate of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Schmidt and his wife, Mary, reside in Naperville, Ill., with their two children, Billy and Eva.

ALLEN-MEARES Chancellor On January 15, 2009, Paula Allen-Meares began her first year as the chancellor for the University of Illinois at Chicago, the largest university in the metropolitan area. UIC has established itself amidst the top academic research locales in the nation, ranking 47th in federally funded research, with an enrollment of 25,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. With an annual budget of $1.7 billion dollars and faculty and staff composed of 12,000, UIC is one of the city’s largest employers.

After being named dean, Allen-Meares continued to carry on the excellence of the school, which has been the top-ranked social work program in the nation. Apart from academic growth from within the university, including a world-class social work library and state-of the-art facilities on the campus of U of M, Allen-Meares’ fundraising expanded the school’s endowment from $1 million to $43 million during her deanship.

Upon being selected to the position on June 17, 2008, AllenMeares became the second female to lead the urban campus in its 34year existence after Sylvia Manning retired from the position in January of 2008.

She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the William T. Grant Foundation, a New York Academy of Medicine Trustee and Fellow, and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

The chancellor functions as the executive officer of the UIC campus, reporting to the University of Illinois president, whom overseas the state university system that also includes campuses in Urbana-Champaign and Springfield.

While at Michigan, Allen-Meares was a member of a number of interdisciplinary research and instruction committees, including the President’s Advisory Committee on Women’s Issues, the Health Science Council, which she served as chair from 2001-03, and the academic Program Group Subcommittee on Development.

Among her research interests, Allen-Meares has concentrated upon improving the mental health of poor adolescents, which in turn has led her to being named principal investigator on a number of National Institute of Mental Health studies.

“My vision is to continue to create knowledge and put knowledge to work as we educate the next cohorts of students,” Allen-Meares said. “I hope to build on and strengthen bonds…so that together we can make a real difference in communities, in the nation and around the globe.” Prior to becoming chancellor at UIC, Allen-Meares concluded a 15-year tenure at the University of Michigan, where she has served as dean of the School of Social Work, the Norma Radin Collegiate Professor of Social Work, and a professor of education in Ann Arbor.

Allen-Meares’ academic pursuits began close to home, as she earned both her master’s of social work as well as her doctorate in the field at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, remaining at the university for 18 years to eventually become a professor and dean of the school before heading to Michigan. A Buffalo, N.Y. native, Allen-Meares earned her undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
