Dear Friends of the Flames, Now that fall has arrived, basketball season is just around the corner, and every single person affiliated with our program is excited to begin a new year! In addition to four newcomers on the team, we welcome two new assistant coaches, Kristen Gillespie and Jenni Dant, both of whom bring basketball experience at the highest level, along with the personality and work ethic to challenge and support our student-athletes in their quest to be the best. The Horizon League has continued to get stronger and deeper. We return three players that were recognized by the league last season: two-time All-League guard Jessie Miller and All-League Newcomer Team Selections Shameia Green and Jasmine Bailey. Jas was also named Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. With the healthy return of Briana Hinkle, we have five starters returning! The other returning players are hungry to contribute, and the four newcomers are anxious to make the transition to college ball. UIC’s campus is thriving. What was once considered a solely commuter campus now boasts a real college campus atmosphere. We have the best of all worlds: an intimate, active, diverse place to call home, and everything that “Sweet Home, Chicago” has to offer! If you have not seen our campus lately, you have not seen our campus! The city of Chicago serves as a tremendous backdrop for an outstanding education. The opportunities provided by the third-largest media market in the country are staggering. Chicago is simply one of the best cities in the whole world! Stop in and see us! Attend a game at the UIC Pavilion. We are extremely proud of our program and the young women that compete for UIC. We are committed to playing hard, playing smart and playing together. Our players set a wonderful example for success as student-athletes: they do it all, and they do it well, on and off the court. Enjoy the media guide! Go Flames!

2009-10 BASKETBALL OUTLOOK THE NEW GENERATION After last year’s 14-16 finish, the UIC women’s basketball team will come into the 2009-10 campaign looking to use what they learned in 2008-09 to improve this year’s results. UIC returns 80 percent of their scoring power from last season. The Flames also returns 40 percent of its rebounding numbers and 75 percent of its assists from 2008-09. In all, experience looks to be the key for head coach Lisa Ryckbosh’s 2009-10 edition of UIC Flames basketball. “We are very excited about the upcoming season as it will provide us with the opportunity to put the lessons learned last year to use,” Ryckbosch said. “We have the nucleus of our team returning, with a great deal of game experience under our belts.” With experience comes success, and the returning UIC starters have experienced a measure of success, but are looking to put it all together for even more in 2009-10. Three of the four returning starters were honored by the Horizon League a year ago, with the league’s Newcomer of the Year, Jasmine Bailey, highlighting the group. Shameia Green and Jessie Miller also received Horizon League accolades, taking spots on the league’s All-Newcomer team and All-Second team, respectively. “We are very optimistic about the upcoming season,” Ryckbosch said. “We are as experienced as we have been in a long time, led by three players who have been recognized as some of the best in the Horizon League.” Adding to the four starters will be the return of Briana Hinkle, who was forced to redshirt last year after suffering a knee injury in the Flames’ sixth game of the season. Hinkle started all 30 of the 2007-08 season’s games as a sophomore, ranking second on the team in scoring that season.

Sophomore Jasmine Bailey

Ryckbosch has also added four newcomers to her roster, joining the five additional returners from last year.

“The experience we have, combined with the healthy return of Briana Hinkle and four new faces,” Ryckbosch said, “has our coaching staff extremely optimistic about the prospects for a successful season.” THE BACKCOURT With 80 percent of the team’s offense coming back for the 2009-10 season, and the team’s top four pointscorers suiting up for another year, the Flames are poised to put points on the board. Miller, UIC’s leading scorer from a year ago, averaged 13.0 points per game, good for third in the Horizon League. She also took the eighth-place spot in the league in steals (1.8/game), was seventh in the league in three-pointers made (1.7/game) and was sixth in minutes played. Miller earned her second nod to the All-Horizon League Second Team, and topped the 1,000-point plateau last season, becoming just the third UIC women’s hoopster to accomplish the feat as a junior. With 1,064 points coming into this season, Miller stands 13th on the all-time points list in Flames history. “Jess has produced a great deal for our program since the day she arrived on campus,” Ryckbosch said. “Look for her to raise her game to another level as she leads this team in pursuit of a conference championship. Jess has scored, defended, rebounded and shared the basketball. She will do all of those things better this year. She is determined to make her senior season the best we have ever had.” Green, who was eighth in the Horizon League in assists per game (2.8) a season ago and 10th in free throw percentage (.739), came into her starting point guard role after Hinkle went down. In her rookie campaign, Green led the Flames in three-point field goal percentage (.349) and assists. Ryckbosch says that with Hinkle coming back healthy, even more opportunities will be created for Green in 2009-10.

tion, while also earning academic honor roll accolades all four years. Hinkle has had nearly a year to recover from her knee injury Dec. 18 of last year. The junior is poised to return to her starting point guard spot and pick up where she left off after leading the Flames in scoring in two of the six games she started last season. Hinkle was averaging 10.7 points per game before her injury, and was coming off of a stellar sophomore campaign in which she ranked in the top 20 in the Horizon League in scoring.

“Taylor is an explosive athlete who can also really shoot the basketball,” Ryckbosch said. “She can break you down off the dribble and get to the basket. She is extremely fun to watch operate in the open court. As Taylor makes the adjustment to the college game, look for her to push the veterans and put herself in the mix.” Higgins, a 5-foot-7 guard, is a two-time All-Lakeshore Conference selection from Kenosha, Wis. She was also named the Lakeshore Conference Player of the Year last season, playing for St. Joseph’s. A two-time All-Kenosha County honoree, Higgins averaged 18.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game her junior year.

“We are anxious to welcome a healthy Bree Hinkle back to the court,” Ryckbosch said. “It is no coincidence that we went 5-0 with a healthy Bree Hinkle [to start last season.] Bree’s energy, speed, explosiveness and ability to run our offense will have our team playing its best basketball. We only caught a glimpse of Bree’s best basketball last season, and we are excited to have it in full view for the entire season this year.”

She scored a career-best 39 points last season, in addition to being featured in Faces in the Crowd by Sports Illustrated for scoring all 35 points for her team in one game. “As Erin learns the system and makes the transition to college ball, we think she has the ability to put herself in the mix to back up the point guard position.” Ryckbosch said. “Erin does a great job of pushing the ball in transition and running the team, but she also has the ability to score when it is needed.”

A lot will be expected from Bailey, coming off of her impressive rookie year. She was second on the UIC squad in scoring and field goal percentage, while she led the Flames in rebounding a year ago. She pulled down an average of 6.5 boards per game, good for sixth in the Horizon League. Ryckbosch will also be looking for Bailey to expand her perimeter game this season.

THE FRONTCOURT “Jas is an exciting, explosive and competitive young player,” Ryckbosch said. “Though she played around the basket much of the time, Jas was very productive, averaging close to a double-double as a freshman. Look for her to expand her perimeter game, as she continues to build on all she achieved last season.”

Up front, the Flames return a talented group of athletes to build on last season. Paired with a couple of new faces, the UIC inside game will pack a punch in 200910.

Kiara Strickland also returns to the floor for her sophomore campaign, coming off of a freshman year where she saw minutes off the UIC bench in 29 of the team’s 30 games. Ryckbosch said as she maintains her high level of consistency, Strickland will be used more.

Cassie Johnson, the team and Horizon League’s leading shot-blocker from a season ago (1.5 bpg), will suit up for senior season, with the expectation from Ryckbosch to kick up her offensive game and be the Flames’ go-to inside presence. Johnson averaged 5.8 points per game last season, and was the team’s second-best rebounder.

“Kiara showed great promise last season, as she plays a high energy style that fits very nicely within our system,” Ryckbosch said. “Kiara has a scorer’s mentality.”

“Cassie has done a great job for us at the defensive end,” said Ryckbosch, “she’s been blocking shots, rebounding and versatile enough to defend perimeter players.”

A pair of new faces join the guard ranks of the Flames for the 2009-10 season, with Taylor Foulks and Erin Higgins donning UIC uniforms.

Shanice Sadler, who appeared in 26 games during her sophomore year for UIC, heads into her junior season. Ryckbosch says she has the skill to play inside or outside, and has worked hard to increase her consistency.

Foulks, a 5-foot-9 guard, was an All-Southwest Suburban Conference honoree out of Joliet Township High School. A two-year co-captain, Foulks averaged 15.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists last year. She was named an all-area second team selec-

“Shanice is a versatile, strong, talented basketball player,” Ryckbosch said. “She has worked hard to increase her consistency. As she continues to do so, she will earn

UIC BASKETBALL Horizon League Conference,” Ryckbosch said. “We will really be tested on the road as we travel to the University of Minnesota Tournament where we will face the Big Ten powerhouse, as well as Big 12 foe, Colorado.”

more opportunities to contribute to our team’s success.” Heidi Dahnke and Kristin Petrinec also have experience with the Flames’ inside game, returning as a sophomore and a junior, respectively. Petrinec saw time off of the bench in all 30 UIC contests last season, while Dahnke saw the court in 22 games during her first year. Petrinec “had flashes of brilliance” last season according to Ryckbosch, and will be looked to for more scoring inside in 2009-10.

UIC opens its Horizon League schedule Jan. 2, starting league play on the road at Valparaiso. The Flames’ first home Horizon League contest is slated for Jan. 7 against Youngstown State. Other key league dates include a Jan. 23 matchup with 2008-09 Horizon League champion Green Bay at the Pavilion, and a late-season contest at home against city-rival Loyola Feb. 27.

Newcomers to the post include Lauren Gatto and Katie Hannemann. Gatto hails from Mayfield, Ohio, where she was a three-time All-NWO Conference selection, and averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots per game during her junior year en route to conference player of the year honors. “Lauren brings to us some much needed size and ability to score inside,” Ryckbosch said. “She runs the floor extremely well, and is an active defender, with the ability to block shots and is also a very smart basketball player.”

“Each year that our staff has been at UIC, we have seen the Horizon League become more competitive, and this year will be no excepJunior Shanice Sadler tion,” Ryckbosch said. Though the league did graduate several players who have had much success, the players waiting to carry on are ready to raise the bar to a higher level. We believe each of our league opponents will be better. We believe that UIC will also be improved, ready to compete for the Horizon League regular-season championship.”

Hannemann, a 6-foot-0 forward from Homer Glen, Ill., led her team to a 2006 ISHA regional championship and sectional final appearance. She helped guide her squad to the regional finals by averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game her junior year. Hannemann is a 2007-08 all-area selection and two-time academic honor roll recipient. “Katie brings a toughness to the floor that will have her prepared for the physicality of the college game,” said Ryckbosch. THE OPPONENTS The Flames open the season with a pair of UIC Pavilion exhibition contests, and return to the Pavilion hardwood for 14 regular-season home dates throughout the 2009-10 campaign. On the road, UIC will take on the likes of crosstown-rival DePaul Dec. 4, and Western Michigan Dec. 13, after heading to Minneapolis to take part in the University of Minnesota Invitational Nov. 21-22. The Flames will also make the jaunt down I-88 for a non-conference meeting with Northern Illinois just before the first of the year, after hosting Illinois State and Eastern Illinois at the Pavilion just prior to the Christmas holiday. “We have put together a schedule that will challenge us to be tested and ready for the

COACHING STAFF

LISA RYCKBOSCH Head Coach• Eighth Season • 102 Career Victories Ryckbosch came to UIC after spending 11 seasons on the coaching staff at DePaul University, where she served most recently as associate head coach under Doug Bruno. She had been instrumental in bringing top Chicagoland and national talent to the Blue Demons’ successful women’s basketball program, including five players who have gone on to compete in the WNBA.

When Lisa Ryckbosch took over the helm for the UIC women’s basketball team in 2002, the Chicago native was ready to make school history and turn the Flames into a Horizon League contender. In just seven years, Ryckbosch is already the winningest coach in UIC history (102/105-.493). She has tallied 102 wins and guided the squad to its first-ever postseason appearance at the WNIT in 2007.

While at DePaul, Ryckbosch helped guide the Blue Demons to five NCAA Tournament appearances and three WNIT berths. DePaul owned a record of 186-140 during her tenure, while winning a pair of Great Midwest Conference titles (1989; 1991) and the first-ever Conference USA regular-

Ryckbosch has also guided the Flames to their first-ever Horizon League Tournament title game (2005), first-ever vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll (Nov. 2002) and highest-ever Horizon League finish (2nd - 2003, 2006). She has developed 13 all-league performers during her tenure with those players helping UIC set single-season team records in most points scored (2,184, 2006-07), three-pointers made (200, 2005-06), most steals (344, 2002-03) most assists (492, 2006-07) and consecutive victories (11, 200607). The Flames also broke the school record for most wins in a season under Ryckbosch, with 19 in 2006-07. After a record breaking season in 2007-08, Ryckbosch and the Flames experienced an rebuilding year in 2008-09. In 2007-08, Ryckbosch watched her hard work pay off as seniors LaShonda Grant, Krystal Hugelier and Jacquay Holmes each hit the 1,000 careerpoint plateau.

Ryckbosch began her coaching career at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Ill., where she served as the Head Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach and a math teacher for three years. Ryckbosch enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Loyola (Ill.), where she was a four-year starter and two-time team captain for the Ramblers from 1980-84. She still ranks fourth on the school’s all-time scoring (1,296) and rebounding (765) lists. She played an instrumental role in leading Loyola to a schoolrecord 23 wins and the inaugural North Star Championship – now the Horizon League - in 1984. LATASHA WHITE

Assistant Coach • Seventh Season Latasha White is now in her seventh season on the sidelines as an assistant coach with the UIC women’s basketball program.

Some of White’s responsibilities at DePaul included: organizing practice, assisting with training and conditioning along with film exchange.

The Chicago native and former Taft High School standout has been a huge asset to the Flames during her tenure, working with the team’s post players.

Prior to her time at DePaul, White spent two seasons at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College, where she received honorable mention All-American, All-Region and All-Conference honors. As a sophomore, White averaged 12 points and nine rebounds, leading NE Oklahoma to a fourth-place finish in the country.

White helped guide the Flames’ to a record breaking year in 2006-07. UIC collected school records in consecutive wins (11) and most victories in a season (19). UIC also made its first-ever postseason trip in a WNIT appearance against Minnesota.

White, a graduate of Taft High School, helped the Eagles to their best finish ever in 1998, finishing in the `Final Four’ of the Chicago Public League. During that campaign, White averaged 15 points and led the league with 15 rebounds per contest.

In her tenure with the Flames, White has helped develop 1,000 career-point players LaShonda Grant, Krystal Hugelier, Jacquay Holmes and Jessie Miller. White was just a couple of months removed from graduating from DePaul when she was hired by Ryckbosch as an assistant coach. While with the Blue Demons, White found success as both a player and a student assistant coach, giving her a wealth of experience to bring to UIC. She played in 21 games during the 2000-01 campaign and helped DePaul to the second round of the WNIT. A knee injury, however, ended White’s playing career and moved her to the Blue Demons’ bench as a student assistant coach. While on the bench as a coach for DePaul during the 2002-03 campaign, White and the Blue Demons advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997.

OUT OF BOUNDS

OUT OF BOUNDS UIC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL A PART OF THE COMMUNITY The UIC women’s basketball team strives to be champions not only on the hardwood, but in the community as well, serving as a point of pride for the campus and greater Chicagoland area. During the 2008-09 season, the women’s basketball team participated in numerous community initiatives. Along with UIC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the women’s basketball team lent a hand during the Smyth School Halloween Candy Drive, which provided elementary school students at a nearby school school supplies, as well as a few Halloween treats. They also participated in the annual UIC Hospital Party, joining other student-athletes in visiting the University of Illinois Hospital Children’s Ward to bring gifts and spread a little holiday spirit. The UIC women’s basketball team took time out to raise money for The Knights of Columbus Candy Day at Union Station. The money raised go to help mentally handicapped children. When one of the city’s premier summer events, The Taste of Chicago, came around in early July, it was not suprising to find the UIC women’s basketball team in attendance to support the university. The Flames worked at The Taste of Chicago Sports Pavilion, shooting hoops and giving some instruction to event visitors while promoting the team and the athletic department.

UIC CAMPUS HOUSING IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL With 10 residence halls scattered throughout the entire UIC campus community, campus housing is a university entity on the rise. Housing nearly 4,000 students, the residences available are situated on some of the finest real estate in Chicago. Minutes from downtown, Lake Michigan and the museum campus, the dormitories at UIC are a refreshing concept from the traditional high-rise facilities developed at many institutions. James J. Stukel Towers is the latest crown jewel in campus housing and opened its doors in the Fall of 2007. The Towers provide four towers of different heights to accommodate 740 undergraduate students. Each floor in the building has 30 residents, living in four-, five-, and eight-person suites consisting of single rooms, double rooms, bathrooms & living rooms. Half of the students living in the Towers will have single rooms. The strong community development residence life model is intended to provide coordination and support for a number of academic-related programs and living areas, with each two-floor community having a two-story common-area lounge and adjacent study lounge, and each of the Towers offering a penthouse lounge/ piano room. The building also provides a full-service dining hall for residents, a snack bar/convenience store, student kitchens in common areas, computer labs, meeting & seminar rooms, student organization offices, and a 150-seat auditorium for special events. Stukel Towers is just one of many new residence facilities to open on the UIC campus in the last five years. A component of the university’s south campus expansion, Marie Robinson and Thomas Beckham Halls opened in 2003. The units house more than 750 students who inhabit spacious, apartment-style dorms, equipped with kitchens and private bathrooms. Across the east campus at the corner of Harrison and Halsted Streets is the Courtyard Residence Hall, along with Commons West, North and South. Built in 1988, these four halls house nearly 1,300 students. The Courtyard houses students in clusters, typically three doubles and two single rooms sharing a common bathroom, while the remainder of the halls offer a variety of living options. Every hall has a variety of lounges, meeting rooms, laundry facilities and spots for social and recreational activities. The convenient link to the campus unions allows for easy access to dining halls, bookstores and more.

UIC STUDENTS AND FACULTY AS ONE

While the challenges to the students at the University of Illinois at Chicago are often great, the campus provides vast resources to help students find the solutions to any roadblocks they may encounter to facilitate success both in and out of the classroom.

UIC students and faculty work together with a low student-toteacher ratio, allowing for more opportunity for interaction between professors and students, building early relationships that foster academic success. The university continues to attract top national scholars to its strong faculty. UIC’s faculty have been recognized with many prestigious awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, Fulbright Distinguished Professorship, Guggenheim Foundation grant, National Science Foundation’s CAREER grant, Jonas Salk Lifetime Achievement Award, Society of Women Engineers’ Achievement Award and the United States Capitol Historical Society’s Freedom Award. UIC students win major national competitive awards, including a Rhodes Scholarship, Gates-Cambridge Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships, Fulbright Fellowships and Harry S. Truman Scholarships, among others. PORT ACADEMIC CENTER -

A “HOME BASE” FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT Time management is very important for a student-athlete. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, we recognize the unique demands of pursuing an academic degree and competing at the NCAA Division I level. Therefore, we offer the student-athlete a full-scale academic support program. At the heart of this program is the Port Academic Center. The Port Academic Center is a great support service provided by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to help a student-athlete excel in the classroom and attain a bachelor’s degree or other advanced degree. Services available within the center include advising, tutoring, scheduling assistance, eligibility monitoring, scholarship support and optional accommodations for individual and group study. The Port Academic Center is conveniently located on the lower level of the Physical Education Building. The 5,000-square foot facility serves as headquarters for the academic support staff and features a large public area for individual study, three smaller rooms for tutoring or group study, personal computer workstations linked to laser jet printers, a conference room, a reception area and private offices for counseling sessions. The Port Academic Center, with all of its resources, helps UIC meet the challenge of tightened NCAA academic requirements, providing a “home base” for the academic life of its student-athletes.

PORT ACADEMIC CENTER SERVICES Individual Study The spacious and comfortable main study area is monitored from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday though Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Students can focus on their schoolwork without distractions of home or dorm life. Computers are available for student-athletes to use in the main study area.

Tutoring Tutoring is available to student-athletes in nearly every subject area. The Athletic Department has an exceptionally qualified staff of tutors. Sessions are scheduled during convenient hours for the student and the tutor, and are held in the Center’s small study rooms.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who is my college advisor?

Study Groups

Students are provided with a list of advisors and their phone numbers to assist them in easily finding their advisor.

Student-athletes who wish to study together can reserve the small study rooms by checking with the receptionist outside the main study area.

What is the academic reputation of UIC in the job world? Advising

Academically, it is a Big Ten degree and on par with any of the top schools.

Each student-athlete is required to meet with an academic advisor once each semester. In addition, advisors are available year-round to assist students with specific questions. Athletic Department advisors give special attention to NCAA degree and eligibility requirements when assisting student-athletes.

How will my major help me get a job? Current information is provided to students on this matter. Students are then referred to the career placement office, which will answer any questions they might have regarding a particular career.

Scheduling Assistance

What do I do if I have a question about eligibility?

Center advisors have established relationships with faculty in many colleges and can intervene on the student’s behalf when scheduling problems arise.

A one-on-one conference is initiated to go over questions regarding changing major, course selection and any other academic problems a student might have regarding effects on their eligibility.

Scholarship Support A $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a student-athlete who has utilized the Center to significantly improve academic performance over the past year. Funding for this award is provided by the Port Endowment for Academic Excellence.

FLAMES ATHLETIC CENTER Christened on June 10, 1999, the Flames Athletic Center is the crown jewel in the University of Illinois at Chicago’s effort to bring its 18 Divison I men’s and women’s programs to national prominence. The $9.25-million, 50,000-square-foot venue is a state-of-the-art practice facility and features two NCAA regulation-sized basketball courts; a two-story comprehensive weight training and cardio-fitness center; an in-house sports medicine facility; locker rooms for student-athletes, with two just for men’s and women’s basketball; as well as offices for the basketball, and athletic administration staff. Several individuals provided leadership to the center through their generous gifts, and each was recognized with selected facilities in the new center being named in their honor. Among those are Pat and Peggy Colvin, whose funding established The Colvin Communication and Administration Center; Arnold J. Hartoch, who helped fund the Arnold J. Hartoch Baseball Suite; William and Cathy Merchantz, whose gift funded the Lambert Basketball Center; and Sidney L. Port, whose contributions set up the Port Hall of Excellence.

JIM

SCHMIDT Director of Athletics The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has seen unprecedented growth and reached new heights both on the playing field and in the classroom under the leadership of Jim Schmidt. Named UIC’s fourth director of athletics on January 24, 1997, Schmidt, who is in his 30th year of affiliation with UIC Athletics, quickly put together a department that could compete on a championship level, not only within the Horizon League, but on regional and national scenes as well. In Schmidt’s first 12 years, the Flames have captured more league titles than in the prior 15 years of NCAA Division I competition combined. Most recently, UIC garnered its second James J. McCafferty Trophy in 2006-07, the award honoring the most successful all-around athletic program in the Horizon League each season, and earned the league’s Men’s All-Sports Trophy just last year. Schmidt has also watched 42 of his teams represent UIC in NCAA postseason competition during his tenure. Among those NCAA tournament appearances were first-ever bids for men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and baseball. New history has been made each season under Schmidt, with the past year being no different. Highlighting the 2008–09 season were many memorable moments: • The UIC men’s soccer team won the Horizon League regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The Flames achieved a national ranking as high as fourth in the country in 2008 and featured the program’s first-

ever First Team All-Americans in goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy recognizing the nation’s best college soccer player, and Baggio Husidic, a Major League Soccer draft pick of the Chicago Fire in 2009. • The UIC women’s tennis team continued to dominate the Horizon League, capturing its 13th consecutive league title and making its 11th straight NCAA Tournament appearance while running its unbeaten streak against league foes to 113 and counting. The men’s tennis team once again found itself on the brink of a title, taking runner-up honors in the Horizon League for the fifth straight season. • The UIC men’s swimming and diving team won its first-ever Horizon League Championship under the guidance of Paul Moniak, who was named the Horizon League’s Coach of the Year. • The UIC men’s gymnastics team claimed its second all-time Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the National Men’s Gymnastics Championship meet for the first time since 2004. • The UIC baseball team won its eighth straight Horizon League regular season title and came within one out of securing its third straight Horizon League tournament championship and fifth NCAA berth in the last seven years. • Under first-year head coach and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Venturella and led by Horizon League Player of the Year Sarah Clynes, the UIC softball team won the Horizon League regular season championship and advanced to the Horizon League title game for the first time since 2005. • The UIC men’s basketball team, led by NABC All-District Team guard Josh Mayo and three-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection Scott VanderMeer, secured marquee road victories over Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt and Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Georgia Tech.

“At UIC, we are committed to excellence, both academically and athletically,” Schmidt said. “We will create an atmosphere that will assist each student in attaining lifelong experiences that will help them be successful.” In keeping with that commitment, UIC has continued to enhance the academic performance of its student-athletes under Schmidt. Last season, UIC student-athletes achieved an overall grade point average of 2.91, the second-highest overall semester GPA in the department’s history, with 121 reaching a 3.0 GPA or higher and 14 garnering a perfect 4.0 GPA. NCAA graduation reports list UIC Athletics’ graduation rates at 86% for all athletes who exhaust their eligibility. Under Schmidt’s direction in 1994, UIC Athletics instituted a Life Skills program designed to enhance the total student-athlete, with activities designed to improve personal, social and career development. Team builders, community service projects and leadership opportunities through the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) were also implemented. Schmidt has also played a key role in the local and national exposure of UIC Athletics. He helped expand radio coverage of UIC by reporters on ESPN Radio, WSCR, WGN, WBBM and other radio stations while increasing television exposure on ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Chicago and other local and national outlets. With a strong desire to win conference titles and earn regular appearances in NCAA postseason action, Schmidt has brought numerous conference championships to the UIC campus to aid in the task. For the first time ever, the Flames hosted the league’s men’s basketball championship in 1999 and 2000. UIC has also hosted conference tournaments in softball, baseball, soccer, cross country, gymnastics, women’s basketball, and swimming and diving, while the school also welcomed the NCAA softball regional championships to its field in 1999 and the NCAA softball super regional championships in 2005. An NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament First Round match was also played at Flames Field for the first time in the fall of 2006 and again in 2008. Flames administrative long-term plans are aggressive as well. In addition to major projects such as the first phase of the “Campaign for Athletics” that was implemented and the Flames Athletic Center fundraising campaign that was completed under Schmidt, UIC’s overall strategic plan outlines detailed improvements for scholarship funding; renovations to facilities, including the aquatics center; and improvements to indoor competition/practice facilities for baseball, softball, track, tennis and volleyball. Construction of the stadium portion of the baseball and softball

complexes and renovations to the soccer field are also high on the capital program’s list of improvements. While serving as associate athletic director, Schmidt helped develop a broad-based athletic program headed by strong men’s and women’s basketball programs and rapidly improving, nationally competitive Olympic sports teams. He also saw UIC’s student-athletes gain national recognition for top academic achievements while the teams and coaches earned regional and national exposure through conference championships and NCAA postseason competition. Schmidt assisted during the many historical decisions that took place over the last several years, including changes in conference affiliation leading up to UIC’s current membership in the Horizon League. Schmidt recently finished up a term as chair of the league’s men’s basketball committee. He had previously served as the chair of the television and finance committees. Schmidt has also served on the championships/facilities committee, equity committee and executive council. Schmidt began his collegiate athletics career in the fall of 1980, serving one year as the pitching coach at Western Illinois University while earning his master’s degree in sports administration. Arriving at UIC in 1982, Schmidt served as a pitching coach on the Flames’ baseball staff before being named an assistant to the athletic director in charge of marketing/promotions and daily operations. From 1983–86, Schmidt handled all sports information duties as an assistant athletic director and assumed the title of associate athletic director in 1987. A 1979 graduate of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Schmidt and his wife, Mary, reside in Naperville, Ill., with their two children, Billy and Eva.

THIS IS UIC THE HOME OF THE FLAMES UIC PAVILION DIRECTIONS TO THE PAVILION 525 South Racine, Chicago, IL 60607 From the South: Take Taylor St. exit off Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94). Go west (left) to Halsted St. Turn north (right) and head to Harrison St., then turn west on Harrison and follow to Racine.

The Flames basketball team plays their games in the UIC Pavilion, which was constructed in the fall of 1982 at a cost of $10 million, and the “Pav” certainly has been good to its home team. Located on the UIC campus, the Pavilion is accessible from the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Dan Ryan expressways. Chicago Transit Authority buses and rapid transit trains also stop right at the Pavilion. Regional Transit Authority commuter train stations (Union and Northwestern) are a short distance away. Over the summer of 2001, the 19-year-old Pavilion underwent a $6.5 million renovation. The project included an 8,000 square foot addition on the inside, which was designed to increase the seating capacity to 9,000 for sporting events and 10,300 for concerts. Another 14,000 square feet of the existing structure will be renovated at a later date. The most noticeable improvements made to the Pavilion were at the front of the building, at the corner of Harrison Street and Racine Avenue. The front façade includes a twostory, glass-enclosed entryway to provide a more dramatic entrance to the building. The newly designed box office was also moved to a more prominent spot on Racine Avenue for patrons. Additionally, renovations also included the addition of a clearly recognizable signage on the outside of the UIC Pavilion while food stands were also enlarged with better access to the concession areas. The Pavilion offers a wide variety of entertainment year round, headlined by the UIC Flames men’s and women’s basketball teams. Recent UIC home men’s basketball schedules have included contests with Illinois, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Illinois State, Marquette, Detroit and Green Bay. Other sporting events that have been at the Pavilion include the World Boxing Championships, Volvo Grand Prix and Ameritech Cup tennis; USA Women’s Basketball vs. the Russian Olympic Team; U.S. Precision Figure Skating Championships; USA Basketball All Stars vs. the Yugoslavian Olympic Team; Chicago Power Soccer; Labatt’s Hockey Heroes vs. UIC featuring the return of National Hockey League Hall of Famers Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita; men’s and women’s gymnastics competitions; and the world renowned Harlem Globetrotters. Besides hosting sporting events, the Pavilion has had many acts on its stage. The Grateful Dead, U2, Van Halen, REM, R. Kelly, LL Cool J, Greenday, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West and Madonna are just a few of the acts that have entertained thousands of fans. The Pavilion features a new state-of-the-art video board and ribbon board, which enhances the game atmosphere at every UIC men’s and women’s basketball contest. 65

From the North: Exit Kennedy Expressway (I-94) westbound on to the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290). Take the first exit (Morgan St.) and turn south (left) on Morgan. Proceed to Harrison and turn west (right). Follow Harrison to Racine. From the West: Exit the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) at the Racine exit. Turn south (right) at Racine. Pavilion is 1/2 block up on the left at the corner of Racine and Harrison. From the East: Take Ashland Ave. exit off of the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290). Make a left on Ashland and follow to Harrison. Then go east (left) on Harrison to Racine.

HOW THE FLAMES CAME TO BE The history of the University of Illinois at Chicago began in 1895 when the College of Physicians and Surgeons Association was formed to oversee the football and baseball teams. Seven years later, in 1902, UIC basketball history began with the Physicians and Surgeons winning a 14-13 decision over West Division High School. In 1907, the football and baseball programs were dropped and two years later, in 1909, the basketball team competed in its final season until the Navy Pier campus opened in 1947.

UIC DANCING FLAMES

After 17 successful years on the shores of Lake Michigan at Navy Pier, the campus moved to Chicago’s near west side, adjacent to the circle interchange of the three major interstate highways, to become the “Circle” campus in 1965. In 1967, the athletic teams adopted the nickname of Chikas and the following year, UICC was admitted to the NCAA on the Division II level. In 1979, the UICC athletic teams changed their name from Chikas to Circle and then two years later celebrated a move to NCAA Division I status. On September 1, 1982, the Chicago Circle and the Medical Center campuses of the University of Illinois were consolidated to become the UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO (UIC).

UIC CHEER TEAM

With a new campus name it was only fitting that UIC athletic teams have a new nickname - the Flames. Inspired by the fact the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 began a short distance from the campus, students selected Flames as the new nickname in a special election in May of 1982.

HORIZON LEAGUE RAISE YOUR SIGHTS

Coming into its 31st season in 2009-10, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of WisconsinGreen Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms of athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). In all sports, all teams participate in their respective postseason League championships regardless of regular-season performance, allowing all student-athletes an opportunity to qualify for NCAA championships. The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history, with Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last four seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and then finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters. Forty-eight student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2007-08, while 14 earned Academic All-America honors, including a pair of first-team selections. COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a wellearned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting, while the League, it schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more. SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events. DEMOGRAPHICS Horizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience. LEADERSHIP Jonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 18th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the ninthlongest tenured commissioner among the 33 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80). LeCrone is in the second year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after recently completing a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. McCAFFERTY TROPHY The Horizon League annually awards the McCafferty Trophy in recognition of its all-sports champion in honor of its first commissioner, James J. McCafferty. Milwaukee won the McCafferty Trophy following the 2008-09 academic year. UIC captured the Men’s All-Sports Award, while Milwaukee claimed the women’s honor for the fourth straight year and eighth time in the past nine years. As an indication of the League’s competitive balance, eight of its ten schools won at least one team championship last year.
